hey guys..i'm using a wi-fi where every body is using programs like NETCUT.with PC it's not a big problem either for UBUNTU or WIN. they use software like tuxcut or antinetcut. also they can change chip MAC address to avoid cutting the connection.
I was searching the forum for a way to change WI-FI MAC address ithen i found some threads not related to our X10 but they helped me.
1.first ur phone must be ROOTED
2.install root explorer software [rootexplorer.apk&fileexpert.apk didn't do it] i used ES FILE EXPLORER.
3.open ES FILE EXPLORER then settings & check [root explorer+mount file system]
4.navigate with ur explorer to /data/misc/wi-fi
5.mount sys as r/w [previously done if u r using ES]
6.open the note "MAC address" with "ES EDITOR" and put ur new MAC address in aline above the original one]
7.save and close the note & remount sys as r/o
8.close ur wi-fi and reopen it u will find MAC address changed
NOTE:
1.this is a temporary change and returns to the original MAC after reboot
2.no harm to ur phone can be done is the original MAC can be restored
3.always BACKUP ur Original address.
4. The address is resetted to the original only after reboot so if it resets after off/on, try deleting "mac_address.bak" before u turn wifi on again. Remember it doesn't matter ur wifi status-although i prefer it being off- as it only obtains the new address after turning it on
5.don't forget to add to this thread..how can we change it permanantely?
6.also don't forget to say thanks..
Thanks!!
Thanks man i really needed this!
Have you managed to make the change permanent? Im guessing the modified Mac address file is replaced everytime we boot up and im wondering what causes this replacement :S im gonna search around see if i can find something.. ill let you know if i find something!

It's not possible to make it change permanently, because the file that contains the MAC address is constantly being written when you turn WiFi on and off.
For example:
The file is blank when your WiFi is OFF.
The file is written with your MAC address when you turn the WiFi ON.
At that point, you can change it.
You turn the WiFi OFF, it goes blank again.
You turn it ON, your real MAC address is documented again.
So, it's rather difficult to make it change permanently.
Isn't changing your mac address illegal due to the fact it could create licensing conflicts with another device that has that mac address you are trying to use?

I understand what you're saying My_Immortal but as he explains in the OP we actually change the MAC address BEFORE we turn on WIFI. Once i have changed it i can turn on/off the WIFI as many times as i want and the MAC address stays the same as the one i modified? Doesn't that conflict with what you're saying?
Thanks ^^ and just btw im not trying to prove you wrong or anything just curious cause at my uni im only allowed to use wifi on my laptop and since i use my laptop more as a desktop computer i would like to make the change "permanent" on my phone so as to use it while im on the move!

Hey, no offence taken!
But I am pretty sure the MAC address file gets reset when turning WiFi on and off.
The OP doesn't confirm or deny that, he just says that after reboot it gets reset.
According to my tests, it resets when turning WiFi off too.
Since you are in this situation with your uni, you can try and let us know!

In my experience it doesn't reset when i turn the wifi off.. I have been using my phone for the last few days without letting it run dry and i haven't had to reenter the MAC address again. Thats why im thinking that maybe there is a way to make it permanent or semi-permanent, lets say an app that replaces the MAC file with the other modified MAC file on your SD everytime you boot up or something along those lines - does such an app exist??! lol

I can easily do that with an init.d script.
But I fear it is in fact illegal, so I think I'll stay away from it...
@ppo85ster
I think my-immortal is right about reseting mac address each wifi/on but it's done that way, the phone reobtain the address each wifi/on then keep it after wifi/off then reobtain it.
I say so as i face a problem sometimes, system generates another file "mac_address.bak" which contains the old mac address -i think it's temporary file- and phone obtains it's address from this temp. file if i didn't delete it even after off/on
But about the permenant change...i guess phone restores it's original mac address after each reboot,and so the original one is written somewhere. Is it that in
system/lib/modules/wifi.ko?
And it loads with kernel! If that i guess my only known way till now is to modify kernel file. Am i right @my-immortal?
Ofcourse it's the only manual way.but as u suggested if there's a software that can adjust mac address. After each boot like the "set on boot" option in "setcpu" it wouldn't have been a problem

I say yes,but it won't create a conflict unless u intend doing so,after all what is the possibility a random address with 12 digits can conflict with another in a limited area wi-fi.

About being illegal..
I saw already some app on the market that do change mac_address but none unfortunately supports X10..so i guess it's not a big deal as google allows them,no?

as title,
is there any way to do this ?
i want my iconia to become a wifi hotspot just to do file sharing via wifi to my windows .. i know its not possible to share connection as this device dont have 3g network ...
PROBLEM SOLVED
this is my way :
1. download 'power control plus' from market
2. put the widget on the homescreen or notification bar as u wish, but choose wifi tethering as one of the component
3. now u can on the portable hotspot using it.. and u can configure by touching the tethering symbol in the notification bar
4. if you want to exchange file with windows, just download 'andftp' from market, your android will be the ftp client and the device connected to the iconia hotspot will be the server (remember to the file sharing on the device)
when do you need this actually ?
1. when u want to transfer file from pc when there is no wifi around and no usb cable
2. when u want something on your friends ipad / iphone (dont know about this actually, as apple are very strict about file sharing, but sure u can use this with jailbroken devices)
3. with another device which can be an ftp server.. symbian may be ?
nb : you have to know the right address for adding in ftp client, in mac i can see that on system preferences -> sharing -> file sharing
may be someone can tell how to do this in windows 7 ?
thx...

Is there anyone out there who can please tell me how do I change my Galaxy S II's name so my wifi will register the customized name rather than just simply "unknown"? Everyone else's device has been renamed.
Well the one way you can do it is with Terminal Emulator on rooted phone.
su
busybox hostname "the name you want"
but this will probably reset on phone restart
alternatively you can write script to be run by Autostart (Root) on every bootup.
Hope it helps.

So I bought a cheap USB wireless adapter for my PC - D-Link DWA-125.
I set up an ad-hoc wireless connect, my SGS phone sees it but the Kindle won't.
Any ideas?
PS I'm in Australia if that makes any difference.
default android cannot connect to Ad-hoc.
if you want doing this, your fire must be rooted then you copy one file to your fire.
you can search in this forum for more infomation, I can remember where the file is.
If you are running Windows 7 use Connectify it creates a wireless hot spot and the lite version is free. connectify.me
It was advertised that the fire wouldn't support ad-hoc networks from the announcement. Conectify on win7 works pretty well though.

Well, I found a wpa_supplicant file on the forums here and copied to system/bin, but it doesn't work. Anyone have a working wpa_supplicant, or know what files I need to edit? This sounds like the most elegant solution, if not I'll try connectify as suggested.
After fsuking around for hours, still not working, and am too tired to do more.
I tried method from http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/android-a81/a81e-connect-to-ad-hoc-wifi-t1413.html namely
Turn off wireless and then you need to edit two files, either text editor or ADB
adb pull /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini tiwlan.ini
adb push tiwlan.ini /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf wpa_supplicant.conf
adb push wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
for tiwlan.ini - look for the WiFiAdhoc line and change, add the other two lines after it
--------------
WiFiAdhoc = 1
dot11DesiredSSID = InsertyourSSIDhere
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0
for wpa_supplicant.conf - add the ap_scan=2 line and your adhoc network
-----------------------
ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wifi
update_config=1
ap_scan=2
network={
ssid="InsertyourSSIDhere"
key_mgmt=NONE
mode=1
wep_key0=1234567890
priority=20
}
- Reboot and turn on wireless - can take a while to connect
- this works on the Android 2.1 firmware, have not yet fully tested on 2.2.
- I think the priority line is important, make it bigger than other networks in wpa_supplicant.conf so it tries to connect to AdHoc first.
- When you add new networks through the Android settings menu, the ap_scan=2 line disappears so you have to re-add it

Install ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk
Before running it you'd better ROOT your Kindle Fire for higher user ability.
Run ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher
You should see Switch to Infrastructure mode / Switch to Ad-hoc mode button.
Click Switch to Infrastructure mode and it turns to Switch to Ad-hoc mode then you can click Settings button to set SSID and WEP password if possible.
I put into Bzeek Free WiFi as SSID as I'm using Bzeek and WEP is not selected for Bzeek. If you use other name and with WEP, just do your way.
Now the button display Switch to Ad-hoc mode, just click it and turn it to
Ad-hoc Mode, click Enable WiFi button and it will connect to Bzeek Free WiFi rapidly
Then it will ask you put in your Bzeek username and password, finally you can share the internet with WiFi Ad-Hoc from your laptop happily!
I post this method to a Chinese forum and you can check screenshot images and download links there better.

I wonder who edited that for me? Also, what is a google?
I concur with borborpa. I would think the problem is that the kindle fire will only connect to a normal network as opposed to ad-hoc, which is how most phones tether their connection. The only way then to tether your kindle fire to your phone would be to get a phone whose wireless chipset supports emulating a real router.

I don't think that was what he was replying to. It obviously allows you to specifically grant access to the devices that should be getting it and not allow access to anyone that can see the SSID. Towards the bottom of the first post, it was asked if anyone knew how to create a password, to please post it. I'm pretty sure that is all he was responding to.
Prior to the Moto X, I had a Gnex, so I haven't used this app in quite some time, but when I did use it, the encryption was WEP and did funny things. Access control is just fine for me, and I'm not sure why anyone would care THAT much about SSID.
Its the SSID and the password that can't be changed. I could see why someone would want to have a password on their network. Mac address control is not very secure at all.
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk 4
I followed the instructions but when I try to connect my ipad to my phone it tells me "unable to join the network". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Played around with settings and this is what I did:
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set up Method: Auto
Wifi driver reload AND wifi driver reload 2: checked
Enable access control: check
Keep alive connection: check
Make sure MSS clamping and Routing fix are both checked. Now it runs buttery smooth and speeds are great!
This is one of the only reasons I root, I don't do roms just strictly tethering. Hope this helps someone that was in my situation as well.

It's secure enough for this purpose. Yes, they can be spoofed, and yes MAC's can be sniffed out from simple packet watching, however, an attacker would need knowledge of this to even try it, as well as the hotspot would need to be up long enough to care.
I would definitely *prefer* the ability to change SSID and password, but I'm not losing sleep over it.
im on android 5.1, but this worked pre 5.1 as well. all i did was add this one line to my build.prop and tmobile does not see my wireless tethering.. add the line, save it, reboot for it to take affect. im also using the wifi tether router app for my tethering. but should work on the default option as well. i use tmobile, so cant say if it works with other providers.

any ROOT file explorer should work, i use the Root Explorer app. i locate the build.prop in /system/build.prop/, long press on it, press open in text editor, it tells me that the current file system is read only, then asks if i want to remount as read-write, i press yes, i add that line to the bottom, press save, then i reboot for it to take affect.

Certain things don't work still. Mainly PSN and for some reason yahoo. Both redirect to the upsell page when at the tether limit
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app

Yeah, That's what usually happens with both PlayStation consoles. When you connect and do a "test connection" on Playstation3/4 both would connect but when "connecting" PSN you would get an error. Most like would be 30696-4 because I got that ALL the time. But then my brother just caved and added a 7-day data pass 1/GB data mobile hotspot and immediately it worked. I was trying with VPN's and various DNS's and nothing was working for me, unless I chose some bad VPN's. But anyways, my data should be resetting for the month and going back to 5GB in a few days. Hopefully by then something would come up, but if not... it's alright I guess. Someone will eventually figure it out.
You have the same problem I HAVE! If you ever find a answer please PM me on here.
