Hi All,
I have such a big Power issue with the Magician, or at least Orange's M500 version of it that i'm thinking of taking back the device :'(
It doesn't appear to be a device fault, but a design fault.
In the manual it says that if you press the power button for a short time (less than a second) it turns the PDA on and off. This seems to be correct.
In the manual it says that if you press and hold the power button for two seconds it turns the phone off, but this doesn't work. Instead it turns on and off the back light. If the PDA is on, it turns on and off the back light. If the PDA is off it turns it on with the backlight on.
Last night I turned my PDA into standby mode (As i can't turn the phone off) before going to bed. Around 3am in the morning my PDA woke up saying that the battery power was low. I turned the PDA back into standby mode but it complained later on that night. i.e. had a bad nights sleep last night.
I thought it best to remove the main battery so that it wouldn't continue to wake me up, making sure that the phone and PDA were turned off (no power) and let the data backup battery retain the data until i woke up (5 hours time). However, when i woke up the internal data backup batery was flat. It was fully charged before the i took the main battery out. It is supposed to last 72 hours right!!!!? What a nightmare!
I was wondering if anyone could help me answer these power related questions, as i love the device, but its useless if it won't retain the data when it says it should.
How do you turn the phone off so that nothing is running at all? (i.e. to make sure that the internal battery is only being used to retain my data)
Does activating bluetooth drain the main battery faster even when the PDA is in standby mode? (I think i may have left it switched on last night)
Why would the internal data retention battery drain flat in under 5 hours when the main battery is removed loosing all data? Does it need the main battery in place in order to work? Could the phone and the PDA in standby mode by running off of the internal power?
Thanks in advance to any help you can give. As you can imagine i'm very disappointed as i love the functionality of this device.

When you took the battery out and left it out, if you had slid the back down (this is the same as a power off) you would of been ok.
The action of sliding the back down and back up is equvalent to a power off. When you press the power button after this, it is like a cold boot. (Not a hard reset)
I hope that made sense.
So to power off the phone and PDA you have to slide off the battery cover and slide it back on again without taking the battery out. Surely there is an easier way to turn off the phone and PDA that to remove the battery cover?
Thats how i do it. I'm sure there is a different [proper] way, but i'm not sure what it is.
Hi
The main battery when flat enough to power off the pda should have 72 hours data retention, its designed that way... so if it goes flat on friday you will still have your data on monday. thats why it was designed that way and apparently it shuts of at 50% capacity.
Bluetooth active will drain more power.
the backup battery is only supposed to last around 20 mins or less, designed so you can take the main battery out without losing data. this is because Ram needs constant voltage to store contents. hence if you leave your main battery out for more time the backup battery has charge you will end up with a hard reset occuring.
The manual needs to be updated i guess. If you want to turn off the phone you can turn on flight mode which disables the GSM radio functions.
Oh and out of interest for the battery type Li ion, its actually better to keep them charged, they dont have cycles like older batteries. they only have a certain lifespan which starts from the date of manufactor and keeping them at low charge degrades them faster.
Enjoy

So up until the 50% point, pressing the power button just puts the PDA in standby and the Phone is still running. Only when the power goes below 50% ish does the PDA power off completely?
So after the phone is fully charged, the M500 battery life meter says there is 6 hours and 31 minutes of battery life in it. You say that the device will turn itself off at 50% battery life remaining, so that means it only has 3h 15m of useable time before it switches off? Can the phone / PDA be used when power gets below 50% or will it just not power up until its recharged?
Thanks for your help BTW very useful information.
Neil
The battery life meter will say eg 6h 31m, the device will turn off in 6h 31m give or take (usage dependant).
when the device is flat there will be still 50% capacity in the battery to allow for the 72 hours data retention. hope thats clearer.
when it is in that state it wont turn on I think...sorry been along time since i been in that state, untill you charge it.

Surely the easiest way to solve this (and yes I was fooled by the manuals answer to press and hold) is to enable flight mode(which turns the phone off) then turn off ? there are a few apps/ shortcuts that will switch to flight mode easily, you then simply press the off button.
Or did I miss something
I think when we push the power off button (or if we select the machine to be powered off after a period of idle time, through setting), the machine will be off except GSM functions. So when you turn on again, it takes a few seconds to make the machine runs.
You can try if you turn off the button, after few minutes (should be more than 180 seconds), then push the Green button to dial, it takes 3-5 seconds to make the dialing pad comes out.
If you do not select the machine to be power off after a period of idle time, you can use other software to "screen off" the machine, so that when you push green button to dial, it comes out very quickly.
If you turn off the GMS, and turn off the PDA, it will not really get into sleep but will be in the state of retention of data. In any case, when you wake up the machine it takes a few seconds.
Therefore, when you are on the run (say on the street) and make calls frequently, do not power off the machine so that you can make calls quickly.
That is only my experience, I have checked other HP and XDA phones, same results. So nothing to do with the speed CPU and size internal ram.
When the machine is ON, I under clock to 208, the dialing pad also comes out very quickly.
flight mode = on , thats all, it turns the gsm function off, so battery would last long.
Hi guys,
I just buy the i-mate Jam and I don't understand how to use the "power button" on the up right side of the Jam...
If I push the button the screen turns off but the phone is dtill running...
If I still press the button the screen light turns off ...
Sorry but in the Italian manual there isn't a lot info about it...
I'd like to turn off both phone and pda in the night, for example, to don't receive any notification when I'm sleeping! When I turn on the device on the morning, for example, I'd like to receive the notification of the lost reminder if there was.....
Is it possible in a simple way?
Dear Markino,
to turn off the transmision, Tap on the Newtwork Meter "Icon" (on the top of the screen, beside the Speaker Icon), then Tap on "Turn on flight mode".
enjoy it.
Yhea! But... to turn off the pda? (no notification!)
I couldnt get your point? please clarify.
What you exactly want from the following :-
1) Turn off the screen.
2) Turn off the transmission (Similar to turning off the Mobile phones).
3) turn off transmission and screen.
Which one from the above you want?

You'll have to slide open and then close the battery cover. There is no other way to turn off the device. Period.
Hope that helps.
You cannot turn off a pocket PC as you lose everything on it. Read the manual its all in there. That's why there is a second battery which gives you 72 hours after you expire your main battery. It will keep your information safe until you can charge the main battery again.
I seriously think you need to read the manual!
the second (backup) battery only lasts 15-30 mins its purely for saving data while inserting sims or changing batteries. the 72 hour figure comes from the main battery which when flat enough for the ppc to turn off will hold data for 72 hours, so that data is not lost over a weekend for example (hence the 72 hours)

hi folks..
i just wonder how long it will take until the battery fall down while changing battery profile to make the Power always on and turn it off by closing the lid... the advantages of this use are ....
1- you can receive Bluetooth Beams while your device is closed.
2- Wlan will be always on and connected so if you are downloading something it will not disconnect after closing the lid.
3- it will not hang after opening the lid... i know that was annoying thing but this will solve the problem... and i think will cost more battery power.
4- Also if you receive call the ringer will not hang as always...
so guys what do you think about that ... does it eat the battery for short time or it doesn't make sense????
Give it a shot and tell us.

rather look on this board for the fixes for "BT headset fix" and "GPRS always on". Both ensure that these stay on even tho your device is off. I find that BT always on hardly consumes any power (maybe 3% over night) but I have not checked GPRS always on.
hi,
is there any way to improve the duratin of the battery.?
Everyday i have to reacharge the battery and that is very annoying.
i phone about 20minutes a day, send about 30 text messages a day and My phone uses about 45 computing power everytime.
Thanks in advance
I use a piece of software on my HD called PhoneAlarm (although there are others), whic switches my device into different profiles depending on time of day, where I am etc.
This switches it into 'flight' mode at inght (effectively turning the phone off without the hassle of me forgetting to do it, or having to turn it back on in the morning). I'm sure you don't need your phone on at 3 in the morning for example using power?
The result is that I can get 3 days of use out of my phone.
Thanks twisted...I'm sure that program is going to be VERY useful for me. I didn't know there were programs like this either, lol.
Where exactly could I get it though? I don't want to download something wrong.
So far my batteries can give me about 2 days+ (subject to usage)
Just set lights off to 10 seconds to conserve battery. Lighting put to minimal if u can bare with it.
Install TD2 tools, it allows u to wake yr phone up without using the power button. Found it useful (not compulsory however)

I have read some threads about htc devices and their battery- life and behaviour and i didn't really read about the problem i'm having.
The device (topaz) is about 2 weeks old and i'm fairly satisfied with the batteryperformance. Playing with it for about ten minutes would make my battery drop about 5% which is very reasonable.
But lately - speaking of 3 days - i have this weird issue; the battery drains like hell; when i send 1 text message the device can drop 5-6%; which is quite much and absolutely a heavy fall suddenly, compared to what it used to be.
Also, when charging the battery, from 0-70% goes very fast, like about 10 minutes. The other 30% go slow.
I configure the device like this:
- GSM mode
- No wifi
- No bluetooth
- no data connection
System: beam is switched off, data only goes through 'my work network' and band is switched to GSM (which means no 3G - again)
My experience happens when i have no other applications (like GPS) running, and I also have G-light enabled (polling 100ms, mostly 40% backlight, and i have this running since day 1)
I did switch my rom quite often; but I always performed hard-reset and battery calibration afterwards.
installed in current order:
- Touch InCall
- Tomtom navigator
- ageye g-light
- TD2 tools (large cache settings)
- Taskbaricon 6.5.3
- Zenyee disable HTC messaging
Roms used: Dutty R6-R7
Radio: 4.49.25.17, 4.49.25.57
There are some rather aggressively power hungry ROMs and the culprit is mainly Touch flow/HTC sense.
Turn it off for a test and see if there is a difference!
Well, I do experience similar problem. My battery charges for 70% very fast and at 70% it seems to stay forever. (whole night) I haven't done anything to my phone yet. I have it just like it came from T-Mobile. I didn't install any additional application besides sbp backup. I do keep my memory running at around 40% all the time. I have Win6.1 and TF3D on. TF3D is T-Mobile customed, so not sure what manila it is based on.
Please, anybody, do you have other suggestion as what the problem may be?
I want to flash the ROM, yet with these issues I am still reconsidering. If it is faulty battery I would rather go and exchange it as it is still in warranty.
Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S.> If anybody can help me to extract my Radio and back it up I would appreciate. Thanks.
does anyone know a link to how to keep the battery in tip-top shape. I know there is a post somewhere on xda, but really don't want to look over about 1300 posts to find that. Can someone help me?

"Battery calibration is simply done by running it down completely until the phone shuts off by itself. Then remove the battery, wait 10 seconds, insert again, repeat. If the phone shuts off again in less than a few minutes you're done. Remove battery and hold power button for 1 minute, then insert battery. Don't switch on the phone. Plug the charger and recharge the battery fully until the green light is on. Then remove battery, hold power button for few seconds, insert it and switch on the phone..."
thanks for the tip. will try that. Still, a link for battery tips? I remember a post where a member explained how the battery works I am interested in knowing if it is better to drain the battery or when the battery is lo/very low it would be advised to recharge ...

Here is a link on the Wiki regarding battery consumption.
With Li-Ion batteries it is not recommended to discharge completely as it is with NiCad every 30 cycles.
If you have flashed another ROM that has changed your radio ROM, i.e. you've flashed an official ROM, the Radio ROM will be your culprit for increased battery drain. A weaker radio will constantly have to search for the best network and thus use more battery.
For a few power saving tips;
1. Setup sync times instead of pushing emails.
2. Make sure your data disconnects after use (a few programs out there for that)
3. Set your power settings to turn device off at select times of inactivity
4. Increase your file cache size.
5. Enable auto screen lock
how do you enable auto screen lock? I'd rather not use TD2 Tools. is there any other way?
