Is there an easy way to determine if an Evo has 2.2 or the gb update? Thinking of picking one up at Radio Shack since it's free, but they are clueless as usual. I was hoping you can find out my something simple like the meid or s/n.
The best thing to do is to ask them to power on the device before you activate it to your plan. tell them you would like to "give it a test run". Then Go to Settings, About Phone, Software Information. And Look where it says Android Version. But best bet is if its a new shipment of evos it will have 2.3. Just ask the person working how long the evos have been in the store or if its a new shipment.
I've been hearing that alot of best buys still have 2.2's left...

I'm pretty sure most if not all radio shacks Evo's will have 2.3.3. But you may get lucky who knows. Mine came with 2.3.3. good luck bro

Go to radio shack and hold that thing to the side of they head, they will then tell u just about anything... 2.2 evo.... How many in stock... What time they wife get off..... How many devices in the back room....lmao...... Just kidding.... When the guys at radio shack wore shirts and ties they had knowledge of everything..... But they wanted to be hip... So they hired the afterschool with tan pants and stopped paying commission .... Hard to find that type of service now... Like silo 's or circuit city had....
Usually sprint ships new phones without the update just ask them not to activate it.

The store I work at "fortunately" uses a lazy "LIFO" technique for stockpiling our evo's and other more popular phones. Its definately possible that some phones in the back were shipped prior to the June update. All we got to do is scan them into our system to see when they were delivered. If you knew someone at a store I guess they could check that out for you but good luck.

aparently Wal-Mart is selling unlocked 2.1 EVOs in select locations
I got a 2.2 w/ 2.10 hboot Evo 4G today at best buy. I asked if I could get the "lowest" serial, and the best buy gal help me look. A lot of the serials were HT15... and HT16... Saw a HT12.. and I said, lets try that one. She powered it up, and it showed 2.2. I said I'll take it Also, none of the boxes had "2.3" stickers, but I wasn't sure if they put those on the EVO 4Gs.
I was looking at the Shift, and found a 2.2 Shift on the first try, but decided to go with the EVO in the end

Any way to find one of these? They do not seem to be available any longer at Best Buy, and I think it was a BB exclusive.
Any other way to obtain one?
This would really please my co-worker if I could find one for them.

I work at Best Buy Mobile and we had an Employee News article go through our systems about a week or two ago that literally read "White Evos Lost In Bermuda Triangle." The article went on to say that they weren't really lost in the Bermuda Triangle, but to not expect any replenishment on White Evo stocks for the foreseeable future. Don't wait around for one, they aren't coming any time soon.
I would let her have mine for the right compensation

Why do you need pictures?
I work at Best Buy, and I cannot even get one. The whole state of Florida is pretty much out of them, and they are discontinued.
So don't bother expecting to get one with an upgrade. It's better to just buy one on eBay.
Let your co worker know white evo isn't too far from black one.
Screen and frame portion is black just like the regular black evo.
Only white portion is the battery cover and the small portion of plastic on the back.
It's far from white iPhone and black one.
Thanks so much.
She's pretty much resigned to the fact that none are to be found, but, I knew that if any were to be found, this would be the place to look.
Is she hot??
Actually sprint is going to resell the white evo in November. Probably after the galaxy tab goes on sale which is on the 14.

If everything goes as per usual, they will go on sale the day after his girlfriend buys something else.

I am in st. louis and would like to trade my Epic rooted with CM6 plus many extra accessories for an Evo, preferably the white one with the newer screen. but could be persuaded for a regular one LOL.

I would try and stay local man, if you can't drive to get it don't do it. No offense to anyone but I don't trust anyone on the internet and they shouldn't trust you.
As for activation, I was told that having CM on the phone can sometimes cause issues updating the PRL for the switch so you might have to odin it back to stock or flash a different ROM. I went to stock because I was worried about having it on a leaked build. However, with that said, the Evo I got was running a rom with a very custom boot animation (Fresh) and the rep mentioned how cool it looked and asked how he could get that.
yes.. I would stay local... for both party's saftey.
you can call it in to get it activated...
or you can do it online.. by creating an account with sprint.
from what I know.. I dont see why it would matter what ROM you might have on an EVO. the ESN is all that the carrier needs.

I'll cut to the chase.
I'm on Verizon currently mulling a switch to Sprint as a money saver.
Strongly considering the Evo as I can get it for a penny on Amazon.
Owning an Incredible and a NookColor, I know just about everything I need to know about rooting, blah blah, etc.
Just one question, on Evo ROMs, is 4G actively working? Say CM7 for example?
and is the root process the same? Unrevoked or am I out of the loop?
Yes, you can use unrevoked.
And yes, 4G works in cm7.

Ahh..not really. The latest Gingerbread update broke unrevoked. Currently there is no root exploit for the updated firmware. It's been that way for about a month. Many have confirmed that new Evo's are being shipped with 2.3.3 so until an exploit is found, if you get a new Evo you will not be able to root it.

From what I hear the unrevoked team is working on it, but no ETA and scant information has been revealed. I'm waiting on a root to be discovered as well so I can exchange mine due to a few bright spots on the screen, but they are tolerable vs. giving up my rooted phone.

not that i am aware of due to the fact none of the HTC 2.3.3 phones have been hacked yet. Maybe you could sell your vzw phone and buy a rooted evo off here or ebay or maybe craigslist. If you do tho gotta get the number checked to make sure its able to be activated on sprint and not black listed. Or if you wanted to you could get the evo 3d (which there has been strides on is being worked on very diligently so that it can be rooted.) I know you probally dont want to spend 200 but if you ported your number before 7/23 you can still get 125 credit.
http://www.sprint.com/landings/portcredit/?ECID=vanity:switchtosprint
also i beleave sprint will buy your phone at the moment for 72 bucks
with their buy back program which would leave you with a while 3 dollars you would have to pay for the phone. BUT I would suggest you do this very very soon.! hope you go through with it and enjoy if you want to check out the evo 3d many top devs have moved and some will probally move sooner or later just about the funds.
https://secure2.sprintbuyback.com/c...onid=2BEA87BD9605B2DCB255C5F7903FCEE3.server1
let us know if you joned sprint back here in the evo forums hope this helps you out man!
(ps if you are a member of a credit union or AAA ask if they have any eligble discounts or for your work to reduce your bill)
Spend the extra money and buy the 3D. You will thank yourself in the long run.
So I hear Sprint's network kinda blows, any info on this?
I know it's no Verizon but is it acceptable, gets the job done or downright miserable like AT&T?
I think it gets the job done but it is depends on your area also. I can watch netflix and tether and i have no complaints about it.

If you get an evo with 2.2, you can use unrevoked, if 2.3, there is no root for it yet and you'll be stuck. As for CM7, everything thing works, except MIUI, because it has no 4G. And I thought I was Marino.

So many people talking about getting a new Evo 4G from other places, and having them already updated to 2.3.
You are NOT out of luck!! Thought I'd post this for an FYI.
Best Buy seems to be your best shot at a new Evo 4G still on 2.2 Stock. I've gone through 4 now from them (had hardware issues on 2) and all have come out of the box with 2.2.
I asked the CSM helping me to not do anything to the phones...I'd prefer to power em on. Got home, cancelled update...Stock 2.2 ready for Root / Flashin.
If you're in the market for a new Evo 4G...check Best Buy first. With a little polite direction, you should have the same experience.
The Tulsa OK store I frequent had at least 20 or so left in stock...

I just bought one from my local best buy and it was 2.3.3 out of box. It was the last one the store will have also. You are very lucky
Wish I could take mine up there, but I just got one from Sprint this week that they sent me to replace my Epic. Ah well I guess I will have to wait like everyone else for root.
I work for Best Buy and can honestly if anyone gets a 2.2 in DFW, consider yourself lucky. My refurb through the Black Tie Protection came with 2.3.3.
I can say however that my battery is absolutely amazing.
A friend of mine has bought two from bestbuy. First one returned due to software issue and the newest going back to extreme light bleed. Both on 3.70 software. You can get lucky at some bestbuys. I think the more rural ones may have left over stock that has been sitting for a while. Two in a row that are not updated are pretty good odds.
I got an Evo 4G a week ago from BB, brand new out of the box. Had 2.3.3 already installed. I had been thinking of going back and trying to find one with 2.2 and claiming hardware/software issues on one until I find one. This gives me hope.
Do I have to have purchased my evo at best buy to take my evo there for a replacement?

I got 2 Evos at the start of this month, and I didnt know about the 2.3.3 thing so in short both of them, one white and one black were 2.2 and me being a geek updated without researching.
Last friday had to go back with mine because of a small hairline crack the body had around the volume down and of course they said besides that the phone is working and I was ready to fight, but before I even started talking he said, "but you still on your 30 days exchange so if you want to just change it, i can do that" and so I did and this also was 2.2, I said "just activate it, I don't want to update it, cuz mine ran sluggier than my wifes and thats the only difference, she didnt get the update and i did" He was like, ok that makes sense. check it and see if that was your problem...
On my local store they didn't seem to have a shortage or anything, I saw him pulling it out of a nice stock of EVO's.
Same here in NY. My buddy and I got Evos in a local BB Mobile and they both had 2.2 on it. The Rep who was taking care of me almost updated the phones until the manager and I both told her not too. The manager is a personal friend of mine whom I do rooting of devices for. ;-)
I got my Evo about a month ago with 2.2 installed. At the time I was totally unaware that updating would lock me out. Good thing I didn't

I bought mine at the Best Buy in Rockwall, which is a DFW store. They had about 30 with 2.2 and 30 with 2.3 and they gave a wide open choice on it 2 weeks ago.

Nope. I'm about to follow up with HTC right now.
So basically what I would recommend everyone doing is reading this thread here:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/382301
Email [email protected] and let him know your issue. It will go to the office of the CEO of Sprint and should help speed up the process of getting your replacement.
Got my replacement, only thing I don't like about it is it is that the last one had rounded glass on the touchscreen and camera lens, it was odd but beautiful, make it feel like one of those new winmo nokia phones.
Atleast this one works though.
I heard that HTC is cutting back on manufacturing these devies, both the OG Evo and the Evo Shift. But HTC still has to consider replacement devices so they probably have cut back their production line for these devices quite a bit but still keep small sections open for manufacturing . Either way to me it sounds like more of a issue on HTC's part with the back orders and Sprint shouldn't really be blamed. But sprint should have a loaner phone policy where customers can pay a deposit or something if Sprint is worried that much about people not returning the loaner phones as they say on that link that Vicodan posted. Then you could of course get the deposit back once your new device comes in. A shift 2 with a dual core cpu would be nice though. I think HTC should consider this when planning their new devices to manufacturer.

It's more like Sprint clears out inventory of replacement shifts, 500 shifts break and they order 500 more and you get your replacement. It's a really weird system but it makes sense, they buy in bulk. That is the understanding that I have and can share publicly without getting into too much confidential detail but HTC heard my concerns loud and clear, I promise you that.
Every concern everyone has voiced on this forum has been voiced including my own.
I would just say patience is a virtue guys.

+1... Sprint and/or HTC know how dependent people are on their mobile devices, because they and modern technology have made us that dependent... To solve the non return issue of loaners, a simple $300 charge on bill when loaner is accepted by customer and $300 credit on the bill when loaner is returned, all guaranteed by a basic agreement signed by sprint and the customer. I didn't even go to business school and that makes sense to me...
