Maybe this is far fetched or not..
But will the day ever come or is it even possible that we eventually have a way... perhaps through the recovery menu or just generally through the phone..
To be able to easily select any of the themes, roms... etc from a list of all of the themes, roms.. etc and then install while our phone keeps everything critical to a user saved...
Maybe I am wrong.. I am not much a help to this community.. the best I can give are ideas.
I was thinking a program called ... "XDA" for example that would allow us to install any of this stuff more easily... would be f'n sweet...
Perhaps there could be money from advertising revs or just flat out charge a buck or two as well..
I'm not really sure... thoughts? Is it possible or not?
Excuse my ridiculous way of communicating.
PS... I would love to have easier access to what you guys are doing here, and I know I'd be fully willing to pay for an app that allowed simple installation of work that has gone down here.
It's been such a long time since I rooted and put in a rom as well as other things, I slightly don't look forward to doing it again as well as don't really know what new features would be gained.
I know i've only really had trouble with one thing on my phone and its the damn youtube app... 90% of the time video/audio doesn't play.. but if I try 10x to load the video it does eventually work.
I don't even know what i'm using any more.. I think I have fresh.
Again excuse my writing/thinking style... (full blown lunatic) DEAL WITH IT.
for themes, at least, use metamorph. you could easily come up with that through a google search and maybe 5 or 10 minutes of looking around. though you probably are gonna be using 1.6 aosp for theming with metamorph. so that means no sense.
roms.... not gonna happen lol.
Well essentially recovery is what you are talking about...
I mean in regards to cutting out the work to be able to flash a rom, you can't do it. You are always going to need root access, and really the reason I assume we use recovery in the first place is that it is not running on the ROM/etc, its outside what we are trying to mod.
I mean say someone came up with a simple apk, released to market and etc for installing roms. How would you run the apk? You can't flash over the rom while still using it.
Plus I would say it is probably a good thing for people to approach the learning curve to modding the device. Flashing while not understanding what you are doing and stuff could potentially be risky. Imagine an app in the market and how many people would brick their phone from doing things they would have originally learned not to do.

id just like to see more custom roms and themes come out like the gsm version has.
What I think the OP is talking about, is something like Preware for the Palm Pre, where you can download whatever it is to be modified through Preware, and then Preware reboots the phone/Luna (windows manager) depending on what is being modified, and then the changes are done. But then again, Preware can't change ROM's, only skins, etc.
I have a HTC HD2 for like 5-6 months now. It is a excellent phone but since with WinMo 6.5 it's like having a genius mind with down syndrome. My main thing is to be able to watch streaming video. I know they have some browsers but most suck and dont work too well. Sorry Skyfire. Plus uZard is always crashing on me. I want to installed Android and have no clue where to start. Seems like they are like 100 different ways to do it. I just want they proper and sure way without bricking my phone. Please no trolling how I'm a newb or I should have got an EVO cause sprint sucks in my area for service and I don't like most other carriers like Verizon. Help is appreciated.

i doubt it works on our phones, but sure someone could try this, worse case is a bricked phone, best case doesnt run at all on the phone to begin with i cant make head nor tails of adb so i wont bother to try this, not to mention i dont wanna brick my only work phone for 2 days before i get a chance to drive to sprint to have it replaced, but perhaps its something to look into?
ive read the thread before , pretty sure people have tried it but , whats one more thing to try?
yeah. read most of it. I believe that could work on the evos. HOWEVER, mine is rooted. so muhahahaha. I won't be needing to do this. lol!
seems like it could work, temp root is pretty useless though
Fr3vo does not work with our phones. Sorry, but no dice.
I am really starting to dislike the Android Market lately, with the exception of games..... 9 of the last 10 apps i have paid for from the market, didnt work. I know its really not the Markets fault, but i have never felt so ripped off in my life. All these "Devs" creating these apps and charging people, and the **** doesnt even work right. It feels like they dont even care, they are just wanting to make a quick few bucks. Hell i even bought a app from a BIG name Dev, all the "PRO" features didnt work. sorry about the rant, but its really starting to piss me off!..... lol ( i will leave the name of the Dev and the app annonymous for now, to give him time to reply to my emails, if i get no reply i will share the name with you all, maybe on a forum with such a community as ours, he will get the point, and do something about it)
I've had a complete opposite experience to you since first using the android market in 2010. Devs are amazing and respond to emails and requests. Applications work 95% of the time.
You do get 15 minutes to test the app in which time you can easily get a full refund. I know it's not a lot of time to thoroughly test, but it helps
same, i've had nothing but good experiances with the market place. make sure you read the comments and see that its popular before you buy it.
Admitedly, I preferred when it was a 24 hour trial period. Android market was superb back then
15 minutes is usually more than enough. It's only not ok when you buy a game that requires a huge download after installing it. Though those games usually have a check on first opening that checks compatibility. Not perfect but better than leading you on with a 30 minute download and then finding out that your phone is not compatible

Best advice here.
READ THE COMMENTS.
Im just that guy, if it can go wrong it will!.... lol I know about the 15 minute thing, but like you said by the time you realize it doesnt fully work, its usually too late. espescially when it does something like "Please Wait.... installing or changing blah blah" for 8 of those minutes.... lol

Just do your research on the application running on your phone. Reading the comments is usually a great start. People frequently say things like "app is amazing on my xperia play" or "F**k you dev you suck l3rn to c0ad. Xperia play"
Sometimes you don't even what to expect in the future if a dev just quits on updating his apps or it gets removed from the market.

Yeah, I use a lot of this particular devs other apps, thats what made me decide to finally go pro with one, i had the no pro and loved it, and the one thing i wanted from the pro version i cant get to work. oh, well the rest will come in handy if i ever decide to unlock BL, but then again i will run into the license issue with the app if i put it on a custom rom, but im sure the dev has work arounds for that already.
EDIT - I feel like an a**hole... after a data/cache wipe in CWM and a nandroid recover, the app is for the most part working now.

Whaaat? If I was making money, I would be doing it to buy things and keep myself alive, not to play of Ireland or The European Union's debts.
Why don't you install app, titanium backup then remove app? After you install again just turn off its updates and net connection via ur app manager. Try it longer then buy it.
I rarely buy apps that don't have a demo, and when I do they work fine.
Always read the comments before committing to buy anything. And when you do buy, try quickly then you have that 15 min window to refund (which I think iTunes doesn't have).
I've only ever had one problem with a paid app where an update messed it up. I contacted the developer and he sent me the apk of the previous version.
Personally I'm happy with the devs on android, one had nothing but great service
brought to you by the XDA app on my badass Android toy
I finaly got a reply from the dev, all he really said is it was recently updated, try installing the update, but i bought it after the update so its already the updated one, then he said, they wil be continuosly updating it so, basically just suck it up and when it works it works, if not too bad. (not exactly in those words, but thats the impression i got) So anyways, i figured out why it wasnt working on my own though, I had a theme that was using icons other than stock ones, so when the app was replacing icons, it was replacing the stock ones, not the ones the system was actually using. So i ended up, reverting back to stock ROM, then using UOT and creating my whole own them.... and it was FREE! Nowi have my cool ass purple theme.
sigh let's start the horror story. So I rooted my verizon LG G2 (VS980) phone yesterday using this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/10/25/root-lg-g2-versions-video/
I found that pretty easy so i decide to then be more adventurous and load cyanogenmod 10.2 on my phone since I heard it was officially on nightly release for verizon phones. So then i came across this youtube video explaining how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s3eO-jvNWk
I make 3 mistakes in this process:
1. i don't do the settings part
2. i don't wipe the phone
3. and most importantly i download the wrong cyanogenmod 10.2 version. I put the 802 international version on it instead of the verizon version.
Now my phone is stuck with fastboot with a black screen.
I can go into download mode and have tried the following guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
In this one it gets stuck at 49% loading when i use the verizon version
the second:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
here when i start to load it says my device is the wrong model because i loaded the wrong cyanogenmod
Now that i know why my phone wouldn't load the verizon rom (because i had cyanogenmod 802 international). I have successfully loaded the stock 802 rom on my phone. the bad part is the touch screen is all wacky and i can't get into setting to go into developer mode and finally fix my phone.
Any ideas on where i can go from here? If i could just get into developer mode i can restore everything by loading TWRP then loading the cyanogenmod for verizon.
Just an idea, but maybe you could use a mouse via OTG in the meantime.

thanks i didnt know i could use a mouse. I will try to find a cable that will allow me to do that.
I was able to help a few peeps with the same prob get back to stock. Pm me if you need help.
some updates.
I didn't get the mouse to help me around the touch screen. I just memorized where all the new locations where for example the middle of the screen clicked the bottom left
I have been able to get this european 820 stock ROM running on my verizon phone and have it in debugging mode.
All the other flash methods are failing me because i get "different model" error.
I'm currently trying to update my build.prop file so i can get the other flash methods to work since this is the file they are looking at to see if it's ok to flash with the rom you have select. Personally i find that kinda silly. I mean i'm flashing the thing give me an option that say "are you sure you want to do this? you are about to flash your phone with an compatible rom". Yes i'm aware i put the wrong rom on the thing now flash my phone with this one.
Oh it would be great if someone out there could post me their verizon build.prop. Would really appreciate that.
update
don't change the build.prop model number to VS-980. my phone is now in a reboot cycle.
I can get into download mode but i fear that i still won't be able to flash with the right rom because that build.prop is wrong. can i skip this verification step?
I also have twrp running but again it's the European version so the touch screen doesn't work properly. i can't swipe across to do anything even if i wanted to.
I would just do this and start over...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960

I can't help myself, I have to speak up..
nothing against the OP BUT this is exactly why I DO NOT try to do this stuff. There's really no benefit that the stock ROM on this phone cannot do...and more...and I read so many reports of people turning their beautifully working phones into little black plastic paper weights. Simply not worth the trouble, time, and possible money :silly: to get a little more screen space, or a smaller NAV bar, or whatever.
And then so many people want KIT-KAT...WHY? Will it REALLY be that much better than what this thing can do now? Or will it just introduce BUGS like every other update always does to an android device? If, and when this phone gets an update to KIT-KAT or whatever version they decide upon, and it actually works without new bugs, then I will be pleasantly surprised. Here we have what just might be the best android phone to land on earth so far, and people want to "improve" it??? My $0.02

Totally unnecessary to make this post. Unless you have something to contribute regarding the prob at hand, please keep your opinion to yourself. The point of these forums is to ask questions and provide help when possible. If you wish to voice you're opinion, I suggest you start your own thread.

I can't speak to everyone else's why but I do it because I'm an engineer and here is what i mean by that. Ever since I was a little kid I would mess around with stuff even though I had no clue what i was doing. I remember the first time I took apart a stereo was because our living stereo broke (the CD player wouldn't play anymore and that's what it was used for mostly). I told my mom not to throw it away so I could see if I could fix it. I was maybe 10 at the time so of course she knew i couldn't possibly fix but she let me. In the end I couldn't fix it (hell i had screws left over) but it was just fun looking around and exploring. As I grew I still kept doing the same thing, taking things apart and explore. Sometimes I can improve the thing I took apart other times I completely break it but most of the time I can just put it back the way it was originally. That's my why.

Sounds like my childhood and I'm an engineer aswell.
Software to me is pure magic, but I'm very happy there's people that can code Roms.
Good luck mate.
Once you fix your phone and it's back to stock it will feel better than sex.
Keep stock for a couple of days and that itching feeling of "i need to do something with this" is gonna come creeping back

I feel you pal. But i also got the point of the other guy. But is in OUR vines to mess things around and turn in back. lol. Bout your concern, i think there is a thread here that got it working. Just try searching in Q & A thread. Maybe search "brick"? Read everything you can read. I'll help and comeback when i see it.

I'm having the same problem and haven't been able to get it to work. As soon as I flash the stock d802 (my phone is really d803 but I had a d802 custom rom on it before) the touch screen goes all weird and my phone keeps restarting.
