root it and remove all the bloatware.
Speeds up the time significantly.

Are you talking about the phone boot up time?
The ARC launcher is bloody slow to load on startup for some reason, it takes 2 minutes to boot up the phone.
You can either use a different launcher like ADW launcher or you can download the latest leaked version of the ARC launcher ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195819 ) which seems to have fixed the slow boot up issue.

How many times are you restarting your phone for it to be this much of a concern...
Sent from my R800i using XDA Premium App

Removing bloatware speeds it up nicely. Unless you replaced it with user apps whch makes the change null...
Update 2.3.3 actually makes start up blazing fast but the drawback is that you have to wait for the rest apps to load too.

People actually turn their phones off?

It's 2.5 minutes with stock rogers firmware. I flashed it to uk generic and it became 25seconds start up. It does vary according to how often and how many Apps for you've installed inbetween restarts

[Q] desire z lag

I have used my phone for 2 days now, and occasionally will experience severe lag. Has anyone else experienced this? It's happening right now as I type, I type and have to wait a couple seconds for the letters to show up...

Install os monitor and see if init is using up all the cpu. Its a known issue at least it is on the dhd. If that is what ist causing it.
If it is that then it has beeen solved http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826507

This issue never happened to me. You could also open terminal and type: top
This command shows processes and cpu usage and it auto refreshes. Most busy processes are on top of the list.
I think pressing Q will exit it. Its built into the os.

I get lag. The worst problem is when I do this-
Go into an sms thread. Delete the entire thread. When the screen goes back to the sms list, the rotating 'wait' circle shows for about 5 seconds before refreshing the list. Happens every time. Even with 4 items in the sms view.

I havent had any lag so far... been using for a week now
HTCSense has crashed a few times for me and automatically restarted just fine, nothing lost due to this happening.
I am familiar with the typing lag because it happens on Xperia Mini Pro occasionally. Anyway, not happened on my Desire Z yet...
The only teeny-tiny lag I have noticed is when some of the widgets don't load fast, but that's due to them gathering the data from mobile/wifi. Doesn't slow down swiping left/right to other screen though.

Really? what harm can it do?
I do it to close some programs (to reclaim memory) and hopefully preserve battery.

Android is designed to allocate memory to tasks being used at hand, the other tasks are sitting idle and not using any memory at all. Task killers also drain your battery faster. Its google, they wouldnt make a OS that would have to use task managers to close things.

It's not the act of deleting where there is the lag on my phone. It is when the message list tries to re-draw...
Try simply rooting.. my phone got much faster simply by using Visionary+. Also flashing to the WWE rom cut long-boot times in half (or less). I think Bell's ROM just has issues.

Happens to me too!!! And I'm overclocking to 1 ghz already!
So I'm still lagging in menus and stuff, also have Usb debugging on as well
Edit: I'm also perm rooted s-off and overclocked and still lag during normal navigation of phone overall

The guys in the DesireHD had this same issue, and they found a fix by enabling USB debugging: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826507
Failing that, you could always download Watchdog lite from the Market to see if it alerts a service using excessive CPU, that should point in the right direction.
I'm thinking of getting a Desire Z, so this is a little unnerving. Hope the above fixes it.
had the insane lag too, did a bunch of pm disables to remove background sync packages.
you think 5 sec is slow, i waited about 30 min to del 2k msgs
push comes to shove proabably would install the stock android messaging app.

Does anyone else notice this?

Im on stock rom and I realized their is a lot of lag when going through the home screen. I only have a couple widgets and icons..does anyone else have this?
what launcher are you using? mines is smooth as butter using ADW EX.
Im using the stock launcher
Yeah I also started to notice it. Very heavy lag too. I switched back to Launcher Pro Plus and no problems yet.

I'm on the stock rom stock kernel stock launcher. My homescreen is good even with the. nexus live wallpaper. I've always found adw to lag. This is y I always return to stock.
i only get that problem when i have a live wallpaper on. that will slow down the screen big time. other then that im all gravy baby
The only lag I have is when I first boot my phone. If I try and move anything on my screen I get told that launcherpro has stopped responding... I click "wait" and 15 seconds later were gold. Annoying yes, deal breaker...no

I've been doing it a bit lately flashing new nightly's and showing off the CM7 3D boot animation to people lol. But yeah it's whatever I suppose
I Used to have the same issue, regardingless if I'm ussing ADW/LIVE-Wallpaper/GO Launcher or something like that. After reinstalling my device on Saturday it works smooth as a new car
On the boot the media scanner slows the phone to a crawl that last longer the more on your sd card you can improve the speed by deleting the folder android from the root of your sd card then reboot. Sometimes the gallery thumbnails get corrupt
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I get it sometimes. The best temporary fixes are to use a different launcher like ADW or LP or change the CPU governor.
ICS should enable hardware acceleration of the home screen, which will eliminate this problem, but we won't be seeing that for ~6 months.

[Q]Go Launcher problems on the Play?

I've been using various launchers, Launcher Pro is really quick, ADW Ex is rather nice and stable, but Go Launcher is the best (combination of horizontal app drawer with folders does it for me).
My problem is, Go Launcher grinds to a halt after about 2 hours, goes from being really smooth when flicking between homescreens and using the app drawer to a mess of force closes and broken promises (ok, not the last bit!)
Anyone else getting this issue? I've kept it on the phones memory (even going as far to turn it into a system app in titanium backup).
I'd really like to continue using Go Launcher, but it's not cool having to reboot the phone a few times a day to get it working properly.
Go Launcher is laggy as hell.
Using Launcher Pro Plus. Best Launcher.
I've used Go Launcher for a long time, and for me it's only been the last couple of updates that have made it laggier. My Gmail notification in the dock is messed up, and I've had a few force closes. The Go Devs are pretty quick about updates so I'll send them a tweet and send the data after a force close, but I'm definitely feeling the lag and stuff with the recent updates.
I've been using go launcher for 2 months now with no problems at all

Same here, fast as lightening for me, although sometimes the app draw has to redraw
Just installed it last week and have had no problems.
I just got it a few days ago or so and I love it. I'm finding new stuff all day. I need to get more themes though. I need a good Superman or Batman theme. I prefer Superman though.
Not green lantern?
I've uninstalled mine to, it does become very laggy in certain situations where more memory is required.
Mine has never lagged and I've been using a heavily configured and themed go launcher for about 6 weeks.
Did you make sure the default sony ericsson home service is shut off, and go launcher is set to default? I did it with a home screen manager.

Problems with every rom

I've tried many different roms such as jvo, jvh, jvp and jvq. I've tried darkys, juwes, gingerreal , f1, insanity and miui but they all have these problems after the phone has been 'up' for over a day. When I exit a game using home or back my launcher restarts.

You are using tw launcher ? If not, you should check your task killer program. Maybe you got the option "stAy in ram". If yes, choose it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175514&highlight=launcher+restarts
I havent tried the stuff in this thread but it is interesting, and on the second page, there is a posted .apk that apparently solves it..
Like saphirrot said, if the launcher has a 'stay in mem' option, check it. I've done that with Launcher Pro and the launcher restart happens far far less.
It's just android freeing up ram for the game. It's a pain in the ass but better than not being able to run a game because of low memory.

I use super manager or astro manager. They have app managers and allow you to install .apk files. Super manager is great if you have root access as you can uninstall bloatware apps like aldiko, layar etc. Make sure to backup app just in case anything goes wrong.

I use AppInstaller. Very simple.
Thanks guys I installed the apk and my launcher no longer restarts but apps still close even when I go off them using the home button so I can return to them in a minute and be where I left it. Is there any apk for this as it is frustrating when you go off an app for a minute only to find it's closed when u go back on it.

Actually the apk hasn't worked. Launcher is still rebooting when I go back to the home screen.

Nothing is wrong. It's running out of memory. Android shall release background tasks if foreground tasks need the memory. Since Gingerbread, you can no longer force most things to stay in memory so those features are mostly useless these days. Should have kept to one ROM and asked your question in its thread. Too many things to suggest to tune it properly really. Uninstalling system apps you don't use and trying different kernels are your last options.

This is completely unacceptable then, you can't even multitask. And after the phone has been 'up' for over 12 hours you can't even keep the dialer in memory! There must be a way around this. A smartphone should not take over 3 seconds to open the dialer.

I have never seen this problem before, and since it so several I have to assume that if other people had it, they would have posted about it.
That means that it is either due to a problem with your hardware, or due to something you are installing/configuring. I would do a full factory default then add apps back very slowly, one by one, doing some basic testing in between. That way you may be able to isolate the problem.
If it still happens right after the factory reset, take the phone to a service center.

I have seen people talk about it but the answers are since gingerbread apps get closed because of memory meaning that the dialer doesn't even stay in memory after the phone has been booted.for a while.

Clock

The xperia play is a great device and I have alot of fun with it. Its like having any other great phone with a gamepad id have to say tho that obe really annoying flaw is the clock. After being on for a day or two the clock glitches and doesnt update properly. My guess is that the apps cache fills up which keeps it from updating the only way to fix it is to reboot.
My question is, is there a better clock app or a way to stop the clock from doing this ? Maybe I should just restart my phone everyday lol

I had this exact same issue... and I've seen other posts on it as well. What seems (to me) to be happening is it's getting unloaded from memory. I'm not sure how to prevent that, however the problem eventually went away as silently as it appeared.
Very confusing..
Supercharge it? I havnt experienced the issue as I turn my phone off when I sleep but supercharging manages to stop the launcher drawing every 2 mins so might help your issue

I also experienced this. Just deleted the widget and installed Retro Clock Widget. There are plenty more out there which you can choose instead of the preinstalled one.
