My device never been rooted nor I ever replace the firmware.
I have stock 3.1 (8.4.1.1).
I tried this method but I still won't get any OTA update.
I contact ASUS about this and got back with, what seems to be a scripted replay: that the TF need to be charge (at least 50%) and I need to be connected with my Google Account.

i believe only the US TF101 pads receive the 3.2 OTA but the WW TF101 pads do not.
so looks like you are out of luck unfortunately for OTA

The OP is asking for a way to root his/her TF if they're on 3.1 and is not yet rooted.
As of now I think the only way is to revert back to 3.0.1, root than flash a rooted rom such as Primordial 3.1

AFAIK this is absolutely correct. The last rootable stock rom on the TF so far is 8.2.3.9
The exploit used for gingerbreak has been patched in 8.2.3.12 forward.

there should be a stock .zip file that you can flash, just like the one you would use to update to 3.1 (if you didn't do ota update), will just put .zip on an sd card put card in slot on tf and turn tf off then back on while holding vol down till you see prompt to hit vol up to flash. hit vol uup...voila.
If anyone has a link to download the stock 8.2.3.9 please post it!! I need this as well
I would also love the stock update, realized you couldn't root when updated to 3.1 too late.

Thanks guys.. did it... rooting now... then 3.1!!!
Can we downgrade, root, and upgrade, all without losing data? I read that you have to do a full wipe when downgrading.

meh...if anyone was having trouble with the 8.2.3.9 working, don't forget to extract the Asus folder within the .zip you downloaded to the root of sd card...if that makes any sense. Stupid mistake on my part but hopefully saves some trouble on somebody else's part.
UPDATE: Ok seems that no matter what I do, I cannot get the upgrade to load. Android bot comes up and seems like it's loading then stops and android bot with yellow triangle and exclamation point comes up on screen. Anyone have any ideas?

CONFIG_TEGRA_MEDIASERVER is strange.. can't find a description.. and here I was thinking it could 'possibly' be just a ramdisk change.

OTA upgrade
sometime today while i was at work i received a notification, Asus Update Service (New update available, press to upgrade). i am currently on 3.0.1 build number HRI66.US_epad-8.2.3.13-20110511 (completely stock). if i upgrade OTA i can still downgrade at some point and root? just asking, my battery level was at 10% when i got home from work and i am currently charging (45%)...i would like to apply the update when i reach 50% battery level (but only if i can downgrade to root)

Yes, you can downgrade to 8.2.3.9 by placing it on the root of your SD card. If you plan on rooting and would like to save time, you could just downgrade now, root, and then flash to Prime's newest rom. Doing so would obviously give you 3.1, but with root.

would probably root if you're going to...downgrading isn't always that easy as I am currently finding... . So if you're going to root I would do it before you upgrade, besides there isn't a ton of difference when upgrading to 3.1 stock.

Hello mates,
I am in Arizona, I just got a notice OTA to update my A500 to the new 3.1.
I downloaded the file, but did not apply the update yet. A copy of the file is now on my desktop and the file is in my /cache.
Can I root this official version if I did the update? I saw a link here for a rooted version,, but I need the official one to be rooted, like we did using Gengerbreak 1.2.
Your help is always appreciated.

Oklahoma City, OK rooted less than 5 minutes after 3.1 install.
Thank you mate for the reply. So you are confirming if I used iconiaroot very 1.2, it will root the official OTA update? Thanks.
Confirmed 3.1 + Root
Took less than 20 seconds and Root'd, life is good.
Thanks to the people who made the rooting possible.
OK folks. I tried to update but no go. After downloading the update, I am asked if I want to apply the update now or later. I clicked now. The Acer rebooted and about 10 seconds later, I get a blue bee with triangle with ! Mark in it.
My Acer is 1.141.07 (original OTA update) and roote with Gengerbreag very 1.2. Do I need to Unroot it first with gengerbread and then apply the OTA update to 3.1. And then root it with iconiaroot 1.2? Thanks to all of you.

I did not remove root, only put my wpa_supplicant back to original. If you edited any files you will need to replace all system files with backups of the original's. Second try worked flawless.

There is a known issue with the update failing for no reason, you just have to keep retrying until it works.
Note: It's been reported by a poster here that Acer have now pulled the update and will be issuing a fix "today" to resolve this issue.

ota 2 for WE is.
does anyone know where the update-packeg is stored after being downloaded via ota. i would like to prevent it to update automatically with the next restart. or do i have the possibiliy to abort the process on startup?
thanks for any help.
maybe try to search for the name of the zip file ?
- ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_UK.zip
- ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_WE.zip
not sure they are stored with the same name...
found it.
it is named update.zip (how obvious) and is in /cache.
Updated with temporary unroot and OTA Rootkeeper to .......086_WE
So the rootkeeper works on my tablet.
Its out in Denmark aswell.
OTA rootkeeper worked with my tablet as well, thanks for the advice (especially to temporary unroot before backup). No idea if this is really necessary, but it worked after the new installation of super user (german version)
So my Nexus 7 has downloaded the OTA firmware before I realized that Google was doing a roll-out. The Nexus 7 want me to reboot and do the FW upgrade but I don't want to upgrade the tablet. There does not appear to be a easy way to retain Root, and i'm not interested in teh steps for CFW, etc so it easier for me to stay on v4.2.x. Is there a way to prevent the upgrade? can I delete the downloaded OTA update or something? What is the path to the OTA update files? I would like to know before rebooting as I'm not sure if rebooting will just force the update. I have rooted the tablet but no other hacks such as unlocked boot loader have been performed on the device. I did a web search but did not see a in dept conversation on how to refuse the update once it has been downloaded onto the device
You could try a root keeper app that will retain root after the update. As for preventing the update, I'm not sure how that would work. Should be easy enough to keep root though.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
A RootKeeper does not work with 4.3 due to the way that secuirity is implemented in the new FW. This has been noted in the description of the RootKeeper app on the Play store
The OTA file is in /cache and should be called ab67ca07c4b2e03eca795ada10ff041b77fbb7bf.signed-nakasi-JWR66V-from-JDQ39.ab67ca07.zip (that is, if you're using wifi-only device, otherwise the name will be slightly different)
But in another thread it came up, that at some time the update will spring up again, so you should keep an eye on it
p.s. that should be the update file, but still take this with a grain of salt, i don't have much experience messing with ota updates.

I checked the cache folder using es explorer and it showed no data files(zip) in that folder. maybe the file was not downloaded yet or was already applied and the device is just waiting for a reboot to consummate the upgrade
Or you could just flash CleanROM and have 4.3 and root.

u could take a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998378
Thanks for all of the input. I resolved this issue. I just enabled root in es explorer which showed the hidden OTA zip file in the Cache folder. I renamed the file, but the OS deleted it after the rename so I could not even save a copy of the file. I have since rebooted and the OTA did not re-download (which is a good thing) although I still get an icon in notification indicating that the OTA is ready to install.
I'm just not interested in updating to the latest 4.3 build due to lack of time. I have many Android devices and spending the time to Root and or unlock the boot loader on each device is just taking to much of my time. So I'll just stay on the current build until I have time to tinker again. Thanks again everyone for your input
I clicked the update (stupid I know) and because I was stock 4.2.2, but rooted, got bootloop. I had to use fastboot to update to the stock 4.3, now hunting for root instructions. I post this so folks running anything non-stock don't blindly accept the OTA update or headaches will ensue.

It's a shame I saw your warning too late, couldn't resist the OTA update.

Do I have to use fastboot as well to manually update to 4.3? What instructions did you use?
Thanks.

I wish I had seem this warning earlier too. I blindly accepted the OTA update yesterday thinking "Oh hey Android 4.3! Awesome!" and now I'm running in a whole load of problems and glitchs. I'm also not rooted yet which makes another problem because I can't find anything to root 4.3 yet. Also can't find anything on how to restore back to stock Android 4.2.2. Does anyone know anything about this? Will factory reset do the trick? I have all my stuff backed up.
Hello,
I might be a moron, but 1 hour ago I received the notification of Android 5.0 OTA update on my Nexus 4 running stock Android 4.4.4. I said I might be a moron because due to the lack of space on my 8GB Nexus 4 I decided to make a factory reset before updating to the new OS. I did it, but I have no update notification anymore. My apps are still updating, but it says the system is up to date when I check for updates.
Please help me, can you tell me if the update dissapeared forever or will it reappear? I waited too long for this.
PS: I want the over-the-air update, I don't want to install it manually.
It will reappear, but as the update rolls out step by step the devices are randomly chosen and you'll have to wait some more time now

I have not many aknowledge about this.

Yes, later updates will still show up on your phone
There are some guides about it. You simply download the ota zip (there are some threads with the link to download the file from Google's servers) and then you sideload it using adb on your PC. You shouldn't have any issues with it
Sideload and ota are the same. The only difference is that your sending the file to the phone through a computer (manually) instead of downloading on the device itself (automatically)
