Question for all DEVS out there - Xperia Play General

I'm thinking of redo my whole Xperia Play. This is my phone today:
model: R800i
Android version: 2.3.3
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected]#1
Version: 3.0.1.A.0.145
Root: Flashed back to 2.3.2, rooted and did a OTA back to 2.3.3
Unlocked: i don't know. My phone is sim-card locked to my carrier, if that helps.
I want a rooted phone ofcourse, but i also wanna be able to overclock my phone and some more stuff.
What do YOU think I should go for? Which method? Which kernal?
I wanna back up all my saved games. Don't worry about the games, i can download them again, but all my saved games I wanna keep. Spec all my emulator saved games.

look in /data/data/ for the save games on your emulators, infact you will find most of your saves for your games in there, maybe you should just copy the folder and push it back when you reflashed

New Simfree DHD want to root, what not to do? Please help

Hi All,
I am coming from an HTC Desire to the DHD, my phone is simfree and unlocked from Carphone Warehouse, am on Tmobile though.
I have read a lot about S-ON and S-OFF and Radio etc. I am confused on what to do Next all I want to do is root...and be able to run any superuser apps.
What should I do and not do? What tools do I need to do this...is there a one click rooting app that I can use?
Please advice me on what to do next.
Thanks in advance.
First of all, you need to check what version your Desire HD is running (software information in About Phone)
If you're on 1.72 or 1.75, you'll need to downgrade (I used this really useful guide). Once you've done that or if you are already on 1.32, use this guide to get root and S-OFF etc.

[Q] Why should i root my play?

i am pretty good with computers but i am a noob when it comes smartphones, the play is my first smartphone and it didnt take long for me to get bored so i started trying emulators out. Ive now got psx4droid, gameboid & other emulators on here running nice & smooth, But all i keep reading now is about rooting etc and started to feel like im missing out!
what do you really gain from rooting?
and how easy is it to brick a phone while rooting?
i have been reading this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098736
is this correct for my play (from uk)
any help/advise would be greatly appreciated!
if you dont have a reason to root, really there is no need, root gives you r/w access to the /system/ and /data/ folders, it will let you theme you android, backup you apps and clean cache's that you normally couldnt, another good reason to root is for apps like "adfree android" this will remove ads from apps and website, making some free apps just as good as there payed brothers you can also use root to keep things like busybox updated
You can imagine rooting as using a computer with full administrator rights. It will allow apps to have access to system files we normally cannot access. This allows you to freeze or remove bloatware. Use overclocking software and backup software just to name a few.
It is pretty hard to brick a phone by rooting. Its if you unlock your bootloader and start playing with custom kernels and roms that you start playing a little more dangerous.
Hope this helps a little.

yea i heard that you can customise themes etc that would be cool, and yea i would be doin it for the adfree and isit set cpu app & titanium back up to make some more space
but i was under the impression you have to unlock bootloader to root?
thanks for the help guys!

if your using 2.3.2 you can root using gingerbreak or gingersnap, but if you have 2.3.3, that cannot be rooted by normal means. and you have to unlock your bootloader and flash a rooted system image, if you unlock you bootloader, you will forfit any official support from sony
yea im on 2.3.3 i tryed gingerbreak 1.1 & 1.20 but they didnt work
by sony support do you mean updates yea?
If you delete something that isnt supposed to be(from sony preloaded s/w)...you mite end up bricking the play....if you delete useless stuff only you wont brick infact would gain speed and space on play...
I deleted the Timescape, Twitter stuff, sony wallpapers, android wallpapers and brucelee game and etc(dont remember now)
The fone worked fast and gave space....you could also move softwares from fone to sd card thru root too(one's which dont give option on unrooted device)
but always make a backup of everything, id say use titanium from market, its free, it would need super user and some other stuff...

If the phone is SIM locked the bootloader is locked, so if you wanted to root it by unlocked the bootloader you would have no luck, If you're still on 2.3.2 the gingerbreak apk root method will work for you.
Rooting the phone won't have any affect on the carrier. Well I don't think so anyway.
Back on topic, I rooted my previous android phone as soon as I got it (a ZTE blade) it was a great phone fully featured and good value. With the root came custom roms, adfree apps, screenshot tools, remote access etc. Rooting the phone is great if you have an inner nerd and you want to tinker with the phone.
I'm rooting my xperia play soon.
my play is not sim locked so does this mean it already has a unlocked bootloader??

No. Unless you unlock it yourself it will still be locked. Sim free just means your phone will take any sim card. Its not locked to 1 network (sim locked)

Best Rooting Method

So since as if we have already been abandoned by the Gingerbreak Project, what can you guys recommend to root my R800i without removing the ability to update the phone to higher Android in the coming months?
So you see I am really new to Android and I have little knowledge on unlocking bootloaders and the like that's why I stuck to Gingerbreak last month. Now that I have updated to 2.3.3, yeah everybody knows Gingerbreak no longer works.
I cannot consider reverting back to 2.3.2 since the 2.3.3 update really improved the battery performance and I'd still choose that over the ability to root on the 2.3.2. But then, bottom line is we really love our phones rooted.
So to cut the crap, anyone please recommend the best method to root the R800i (I would be open for tutorials) whilst preserving our ability to update to better versions in the future?
Ive not rooted or unlocked the boot loader yet myself as this is my first android device im taking it slowly but according to threads in the development section you can root and upgrade as long as you do nothing to the device before upgrading, root the phone then upgrade to 2.3.3
This means flashing backwards first obviously.
As far as upgrading in the future you will be better off flashing a custom rom if development goes well. Custom roms will take this device further than official updates will.

See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090. Follow the steps and you shall have root on 2.3.3 . I have also opted to "freeze" the bloat this time instead of just uninstalling it, in hopes that when 2.3.4 arrives i can do the ota update again and still keep root.
Also @ -josh- rooting will not damage your phone so its safe to root. I am also a first time android user myself but following the steps in the thread above worked fine no problems. And even if it didnt you can use SEUS to fix a phone with a locked bootloader
I rooted my phone when i was using 2.3.2 and found a good improvement.
Then i updated to an unrooted 2.3.3.
Ive left it unrooted for now. 2.3.3 performance is better than a rooted 2.3.2 i find.
It would be nice to root and remove the bloatwarw and overclock to 1.5 ghz, which can now be done. But for now i am happy.
Aside from a few Gameloft games not working, 2.3.3 is outstanding.
Not going to root until something major happens. Only reason i can see to root is to clock to 1.5 ghz to get n64oid working better.
Other than that, no point imo.
i have already tried the 2.3.2 root then flash to 2.3.3 method to no avail.. i don't know what im doing wrong but i think it's because my handset's a HK one, had it bought by someone in HK then i am using it here in the philippines. i'm not considering flashing custom roms either since i can't trust others' hands playing around roms, hehehe.. sigh!
You can are not supposed to flash to 2.3.3.. You are supposed to flash your phone to 2.3.2 uk generic version. After root your phone and through your phone you go to settings /about/update software and upgrade it there without hooking it to the computer. Make sure that your bootloader is LOCKED, otherwise you brick your phone.

Unfortunately it didnt work for me. I only have one game in the list which was Asphalt 6.

It's better if you choose to erase personal files.. It's an option that you check off before flash. That being said, nothing on your sd card gets touched.

Newbie tutorial - step by step

Here is a step by step guide for all the new Xperia Play-owners.
Follow these steps to get the most out of your phone
1) First you need to Root your phone to be able to do all the fun stuff. Working Root on 2.3.3 locked bootloaders! (Works on all Xperia Plays except R800X)
2) Once rooted, download Titanium Backup(free) to uninstall bloat. Or you can purchase Tianium Backup pro or Bloat Freezer for the ability to freeze apps.
Will not create space on internal memory, but will free up more ram. Faster bootup e.t.c - see this thread for more info on which apps is safe to delete.
The battery life on 2.3.3 is very good. Even better once you have rooted and froze the bloat
For Yongzh's emulators (Nesoid, SNesoid, N64oid e.c.t) click here

Can someone tell me exactly (in details) how you root my play? I'm from sweden and have 2.3.3
I tried to follow one of the tutorials, but it was so confusing.
I JUST want to ROOT (so i can delete unwanted apps)
I DON'T need to "unlock" my phone to use another simcard and **** like that. Just ROOT!
please?
Have you bothered to read anything at all? On 2.3.3 you can't root just like that, either you revert to 2.3.2 and root that with Gingerbreak or you unlock the bootloaders and use any rooted system image.

what sort of set up should i use i.e.rooted.customROM
i really just want to play emulators (with my back ups) and if possible get all i can for free i heard of a free market snappz i think ?

First off to be fair I did not install that file but i did download it, the file size is the same as football's file that he posted and the android-info.txt is the same. Has anybody installed it, if so can you confirm if its the same as football's?
I have been emailing this guy and he said its copied from the store SD card. I installed it...the build number says release keys...does that make a difference? He says the hboot on this is different
Really??
If it is the same, then why is the official update that I have, have a 2mb difference? I copied the update DIRECTLY FROM THE T-MOBILE SD CARD, along with the G2 update and the mytouch3g slide. If you don't want to use it, that's fine. I can always remove the update from megaupload and be a stingy jerk. But I'm not like that. Extract the images from both updates and you will see the proof.

No need to be offended. You have to understand that if you are not a known reputable member that someone who is should check it and give the okay on it. One point to note is that when Football released his leak, people immediately jumped in and started flashing that file before they even knew what it was. And some ended up losing root with no way at that time to restore it.
We do appreciate the share though.

Its all good. And I do understand. Just got heated for a second there. But in all honesty, I don't know why footballs hboot is different from the official. But all i know is that mine is 100% official. I did get it directly from the T-Mobile sim card.
so I guess the moral is, if you want it, its there
All Good here no problems

I installed this..no issues seems legit

That link seems to prove this is legit..and that the ota and sd card update could have different version #s. So I vote yes for legit!
Would there be a root version of this offcial one not the leaked version

Probably soon. That's why I posted it, so people can get the root going on this bad boy

If it is the same, then why is the official update that I have, have a 2mb difference? I copied the update DIRECTLY FROM THE T-MOBILE SD CARD, along with the G2 update and the mytouch3g slide. I understand that because I am NEW TO REGISTER AND ACTUALLY POST, people could be leary. But let's face it, you are all looking a gift horse in the mouth. I posted it and uploaded it for all of you, just for you to tell me that it's not legit or it's not the same. I put football's into my mytouch 4g previously and quickly removed it because I started getting FC.
If you don't want to use it, that's fine. I can always remove the update from megaupload and be a stingy jerk. But I'm not like that. Extract the images from both updates and you will see the proof.

I replied about these different versions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16645332#post16645332
are there any new radios other then the ones posted in the stickies ?
Anyone have a rooted version of this they can upload?
So if I have footballs on my phone right now and want this one, since it is actually the official, how could I do that? Do I just apply the update the same way while on footballs? And do you guys even think I should update it to this one, since its practically the same as footballs? (Sorry. I'm kind of new to this stuff)

The PD15 images are for bootloader, you put it on the sdcard, and the bootloader will detect the file, if on the sdcard.
