[APP IDEA] Email screenshot from Google Maps - Android Software Development

Hi all,
I have not seen this kicked around, although I've seen other different solutions.
Personally I can't believe this isn't already an option - but anyway...
So I was in Regent's Park in London at the weekend, and my friend wanted to come meet me in the park. Okay there were a couple of ways we could have found each other, but most involved us both having similar Apps (and he was on an iPhone) or sending co-ordinates etc.
In the end, I used ShootMe to take a screenshot of my screen, and then found the picture in my file explorer and emailed it to him. The result is great because it gave a precise, visual indicator of where I was.
Is there any way to do this in a one-click procedure? The beauty of screenshot/email is that it is compatible with any smartphone.
Again I'm sure social features are coming to Google Maps, or through Facebook check-ins, but for me, this kind of thing would be ideal.
Bests,
Edd

Yahoo Go! 2.0 for WM5

So Yahoo Go! seems to have come out today for devices running Windows Mobile. I downloaded and installed it immediately.
The first time I ran it I noticed it was VERY slow, and eventually crashed during initialization. I had to reset my 8525 to get it to run again. The second time around it ran (again, very slow). It deos require you to log in to your Yahoo account.
The UI is different and bit interesting. The front screen looks like it's intended to replace your home screen with today's date and links to calendar and contacts, as well as a box for searching. A mac-like dock down at the bottom rotates between the different features with a little animation.
There are sections for photos (flickr?) where you can upload your own and share your photos - weather, something called watchlists (I'm guessing RSS or something), stock reports, sports reports, news, and maps & directions. Each item gives you a preview before you actually run it.
I tried uploading a photo and the program crashed while changing the description. The interface looked pretty nice though - I'm assuming the photos end up on your flickr page. This may be a good reason to start photoblogging!
The maps function is pretty cool - probably a bit better than the google maps application for windows mobile. It also includes sat view, traffic, find nearby whatever, etc. It also gives you the option of connecting a GPS, but I don't have one handy although I'd love to see the directions function work with it.
The whole UI is an improvement on usual Windows Mobile standards, and once loaded the software runs reasonably fast and without hiccup. I think it is intended to be run all the time.
I'd like to hear everyone else's impressions.
i tried it but don't really like it.
The biggest disappointment for me is that ver 2.0 no longer syncs calendar info.
If you want to view your calendar, you now have to log onto yahoo before you can view it.
If you use yahoo for everything (email, calendar, etc.), this is a pretty nice thing to have. I'd call it essential in this case.
Otherwise, I think Livesearch is much more useful for looking up businesses in your area and getting driving directions and/or phone numbers to them.
Live search is pretty much useless unless you are in a major city.
I am really disappointed in it. Has good intentions and functionality, but the software seems extremely buggy and slow. I had to soft reset my phone a majority of the times trying the software out. Google Maps and Live Search seems much smoother. Hopefully they fix out all the bugs.

New Version of Google Maps (11/16/2007) Available

According to msmobiles.com (see http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6898.html) a new version of Google Maps was released on November 16th. I have DLd it, but haven't yet installed it.
From reading about it, I am not too sure how much has changed. Here is the list the site speaks to:
Real-time traffic conditions
See where the congestion is, and estimate delays in over 30 major US metropolitan areas.
Favorite places and routes
Save time (and avoid sore thumbs) by keeping a list of residential or business locations, and driving routes.
Insta-KB-o-meter
Monitor your data consumption in real-time — just look to the top right portion of your phone screen while using Google Maps.
Enhanced business info
After selecting a particular business, select the "Details" tab for hours of operation, hotel amenities, and more.
BlackBerry support
Just visit www.google.com/gmm on your BlackBerry's web browser, and you're all set to go.
The update can be found here: http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
Enjoy,

thanks for the post, wouldn't have known about it otherwise
Yeah, appreciate the heads up!
thanks for the link
Sweet thanks for the headsup! I installed it, and it works better than ever over HSDPA and with my bt gps!
How does this compare to LiveSearch?

I'm not really sure. LiveSearch was the best for a short while (IMO), until Google Maps came out with an executable version. I dropped LS back then, and have not looked back.
Google Maps has many nice features:
1) Look up any of your Contacts for whom you have Address Information
2) Drag-scroll around the map, in map or satellite view
3) Shows real-time traffic conditions
4) Zoom-in and out quickly and easily
5) Provides directions from point A to point B
6) Integration with GPS devices (I haven't used this, but imagine it works ok)
7) Find info on searched-for businesses and easily saving it into Contacts
Some "features" I'd like to see are:
1) Storing data in user-defined locations on the device
2) Management of that data ... selectively deleting old location searches
3) Tilting of the map aka Google Earth
Again, I don't really know how well LiveSearch has developed, so I really can't compare. But maybe you can judge for yourself from what I show above for GM.

I'll install it and play around with it, but from what you describe it sounds much the same. LiveSearch also has something called community search that will show you events, movies, and todos in your area, along with traffic and local gas prices.
If I read you correctly, the only thing on your list LiveSearch doesn't have is an easy way to look up contact addresses.
I will report back this weekend, either bumping this one or starting a new thread. I'm quite attached to LS, but if I can find something even better, well, right on.
ER... just in case anyone is having a blond moment like me
the link is CAsE SenSitivE!!
nice find.
has it got rid of those anoying no data warning messages that you had to keep clicking OK to in order to continue?
I was originally using (the previous version of) Google Earth. So far, I like Microsoft Live. The addressing and directions are a LOT more accurate. When I look up addresses, google doesn't even find most of them. Live also does a lot better with one way streets and stuff like that too.
Yes, Live is much, much better, even the diectory is better. Map loading seems a little quicker also.
I wish google showed on the page what version it was up to, so I can know when they've updated it.
I love google maps mobile.
Wow, judging by sook's and Braingears' comments, it sounds like Live Search has come a long way in the past year. Might be time to give it another shot.
And yes, frenchglen, wouldn't it be nice? I guess they have some reason to want to keep the version number a secret, eh?

Android Apps for the Vogue Port

It was suggested that we start a thread specifically for the apps that run well on the Android port to the HTC Touch/Vogue. I personally own an (Sprint=CDMA) HTC Touch Diamond, but upon seeing the maturity level of Android running on the Touch, I immediately went to eBay and picked up the Touch handset...and I am glad I did. The only reason I boot back to winmo is for work calendar (Lotus), Skype (iSkoot kinda sucks), and Podcasts (hopefully we getting DoggCatcher soon).I've found that battery life with Togga on to be about 8-10 hours which I can live with it, but it's a pain to keep toggling if you really need to conserve (but it could be worse )I plan on posting more battery data soon, but need a few more days of collection. Hopefully we can find a more permanent way of managing the data connection with balance for battery life.
You can find many apps on http://slideme.org/, AndAppStore (both have phone clients - very market-like) and by searching ".apk" on 4shared.com
The apps I have found to run well on my CDMA with dzo/f00bar's (much respect) latest files:
-Scoreboard - I'm not that big of a sports fan, but this app is slick!
-aLastFM - Just got permission to post the link from the developer. Thanks Oleg!!
-Stocker - Simple but effective stock app, but no graphs. If someone could find a better one...
-Weather - Simple, but effective. Multiple Cities, current and forecast, with menu link to detailed outlook including radar from Undergroud Weather.
-AnyCut -Great for making shortcuts to just about any screen in the OS, especially useful for Battery and Sounds&Display
-TextEasy - for sending a text to multiple contacts, until someone can get a hold of ChomperSMS or K9SMS (K9Mail I have not gotten to work either, we need a better mail app, the native client doesn't even recognize URLS, wtf?!)
-OIFileManager - It's the only one I've tried, so can't comment on the others, but there are several out there. UPDATE: I tried out Astro and Glance. I liked Astro, but after a day it stopped working for me and gives me a force quit. I prefer Glance over OI FileManager, it's on 4shared I believe.
-OIFlashlight - amazing how handy this comes in
-OINewsReader - No frills RSS aggregator
-ShopSavvy - Did you say "We'll match any price"?...but be fast with your fingers, camera is not fine enough to capture the barcode
UPDATE:
I wanted to add SMS PopUp as another great app. You can find it along with a bunch of other APKs here. One of the G1 owners that grabbed all of the apps and is hosting them for download.
WANTED:
-DoggCatcher - for my daily podcast fix
-A true Skype client
-HEADPHONE SUPPORT!!
Please post replies with your own favorite apps that run well on this port (with links, please!)
Cheers!
Wow, no replies?!
I'm looking for SMS PopUp if anyone can post a link.
Cheers!
The Meebo app is well worth a look - look for it on 4shared.com. Lets you IM on just about any IM network (Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc). IMs appear in the notification bar while you are in any other program. Great stuff.
I believe im the only person hosting the meebo.apk at the moment.
Meebo Instant Messenger:

I did recieve the "ok" from the meebo!
thanks

i installed and signed into my MSN account, however, just a white screen shows up. No list of contacts, etc. No menu options other than to add another account or sign off. Not exactly useful (at least this version). Is anyone using this successfully?
EDIT: I received a chat, and that gave me a buddy online, maybe no one on my list was signed on at the time I first checked.
Also, it doesnt remember your username and password, which is annoying because it randomly closed on me after tapping the notification in the bar during a chat session today. I'll keep looking for a better app or updated version.

you might be the only one who got the 'ok' from meebo but as i said, it can be found on 4shared.com also.
What about an updated version of Shopsavvy. Mine keeps saying there is a new version, but of course we can't update off the marketplace.
I'm looking for the Locale application. Even though we don't have GPS running, Locale still alows profile switching based on time and days of the week, which would be useful for office vs. non-office settings. If someone could post this I would appreciate it!
how do i install apps i have them saved to the storage card i just dont know how to load them up, sorry if this is a dumb question

If they are in the AndroidApps folder then they should be installed already. I found that sometimes icons don't show up to launch the program, however. This is where AnyCut comes in handy. Use AnyCut to search in "Activities" to find your app. If you are not seeing it in this list then you may have to "manually" install the app. Open a file browser such as OI File Manager or Glance and navigate to your AndroidApps folder. Click on the .apk file and it should launch teh app installer.
Hope this helps.

Scoreboard.apk
I am very interested in the Scoreboard app, I got it running fine, but the other day the game I added to my favorite never really gave me updates until the game was over by a few hours.
Isnt this application able to provide real-time results?
I am having more success simply by going to www.nhl.com :-S
Thanks for aLastFM!
I was looking around and found another 4shared user with a bunch of APK's!

Someone in the main topic said something about an ebay app. What is it and is it any good? Is it secure? It'd be nice to have for me.
There's been a couple apps I liked that didn't fit our screen plus having to reinstall android files often I lose all my saved info so it doesn't work out for me. Sprint needs to hurry up with an HTC Android phone.
Maybe a stupid question, not sure... Why can't someone extract the android market application from the G1 to be used on other phones? Seems a bit odd of Google to limit the market to only a specific phone.
There is a discussion about the marketplace on the big long forum. The marketplace is not open source. They're talking about the commands and encryption and such for it. I'd think it's not open because they plan on having pay for apps but I could be wrong
G1 Central
This is a must have for any one with a Grand Central account- G1 Central
http://evancharlton.com/projects/g1central
Allows you to place calls and check voicemail for your GrandCentral account. Pretty much allows for unlimited free calling. Works great on my friends G1.
Still missing a few features.. like the ability to call contacts that are only in your GC account, but still very good.
Heres the problem.. it crashes when trying to dial out on the Vogue!!! Ahhh!
So close to beating the telecoms... If anyone knows anything about error codes or how to get this working, I might have a GrandCentral account invite...

I noticed this also. i resolved by changing my time zone in settings. Only problem is that this then modifies your "synced" time with your carrier, it adjusts + or - according to your time zone, so you have to comensate...each time you boot. Not by any means an elegant solution, but if you need realtime scores this is the answer. Probably better off sticking with NHL.com

I tried the "Ebay.apk" from 4Shared, but it doesn't display properly. The tabs extend all the way to the bottom of the other screen which is a common problem for us vogue port users.

Google Goggles as a business card reader?

Just wanted to know what your opinions are on goggles as a business card reading tool. I have read some great reviews about it yet i have tried at least 6-7 different cards and not once has it picked up all of the contact details on it. Has anyone got any advice or tips that might help with the accuracy?
Also, does anyone know how to add a contact field to someone for their personal website address? All i can do so far is put it in the notes section
Thanks in advance guys
For your second question, it looks like you have to do it from a computer. I've added contacts' home pages, and for those I have the option to edit it. For contacts with no website, there is no option using the phone to add or edit one. Looks like you have to do it when logged in to Gmail on your desktop.
Your first question surprised me. Every day I learn something new that I can do with the phone, and that's another one. I knew that I could scan stuff with Goggles, but it never occurred to me to scan a business card. Cool. I use QR codes on the back of mine to make it easier. They work perfectly, but most people I meet don't have them or know what they are. There are a bunch of (paid) business card readers in the market but I bet they do no better than the free Goggles app. All I can suggest is get good lighting for the picture, and if that fails snap a photo to enter it in manually later. OCR still has a long way to go.
that makes complete sense and thanks for taking the time to produce such a comprehensive answer.
Well, I ran several (~30) read tests with the Goggles. I use business card reading quite frequently, both using an OCR program on my PC and using BCR on WinMo phone. Both these solutions do infinitely better than Goggles. Google's product would frequently fail in the OCR process (which can be due to the phone's camera or the business card quality) but it really pisses you off when it recognizes all the words correctly including weird names (I work in the far east sometimes and there are names you can't read in my phonebook) but has no idea that email:[email protected] should go in the "mail" field, and it misses most if not all of the fields in all the cards I used it on. bottom line: useless.
Google Googles vs specialized card scanner
I can't speak on behalf of Google but I believe their intention with Goggles is not necessarily to invest heavily in deep functionality around business cards but rather to provide broad, generally useful analysis of images and as they often do, leave it to others in the ecosystem to provide more elaborate apps.
We are the authors of one such scanning app - scanbizcards - and I can attest that there is a ton of code besides just recognize the characters, to correct OCR mistakes using the business context. Don't forget that a great business card scanner should do more than just scan & add to the address book. We certainly try to do that, providing 27 different features ...
Our app runs only on the iPhone right now, sorry - BUT we have started its port to Android so stay tuned ...

Apps we miss!

Symbian Sxx, Windows CE, IOS, Android, etc...
I tried them all but didn't find the ... how to say it.... yes cheeriness & easiness which I found in my new WP8 devices!
but yet, I still feel like I'm left behind, because all of the missing Apps like (Instagram, Whoshere, Tumblr, Keek)
It is true that whatsapp has shortened the distance but it has its flaws like:
1- can't read long messages
2- no broadcast
3- can't save videos to my library
4- slowness
5- can't forward messages to recent contacts
and other things...
I tried to find if whether these application are coming to WP8 or not by contacting the official websites and twitter accounts but no luck!
if anybody has any information about that, please share it.
Thank you,,
No Luck either ...
Yea, I have tried to log a couple of questions with WunderList and SpringPad on their forums/email and the response is working on it. Wunderlist does have an app in the WP8 Store but it's not available/compatible for my phone.
Flipboard pls
I really would like to have TapaTalk (because BoardExpress, ForoPlex and ForumTalk just don't work for me), and TeamViewer.
I would really like a SiriusXM app. That and Google+ integration (just like how Facebook and Twitter are integrated).
I would also love it if the phone had separate "audio profiles". For example, if I plug in a pair of headphones, all the volume should automatically adjust to the settings I had it on last time I had headphones plugged in. Then when I unplug them, the volume should all revert back to what it was set to before.
Also, also a Sonos app would be fantastic!
Snapchat, Instagram, Draw Something 2, official 4Pics1Word, Dropbox, Starbucks, University of Arizona app, etc......
I can tell you that my next phone won't be a Windows Phone.

While I am not trying to change your oppinion, why do you need the official "4pics1Word" app? It's not a multiplayergame and there are multiple similar games on windows phone ("What's The Word" for instance).
Also, there are dropbox clients for windows phone as well. There's boxfiles for dropbox, there's Filebox and there are others as well. And they work. Why do they not suffice?
Draw Something 2: I got fed up with Draw Something after 2 weeks. What does DS2 do better than DS?
Even Though I do not use instagram I can see how people might want that. Same goes with snapchat for me. I just do not see the use-case for me (appart from sexting), but those are two big names that are missing on WP, alternatives (like Lomogram or Picit) don't cut it because they are incompatible with the already existent userbase on android and ios.
I miss
Ibirds UK
Memory Map navigator or anything that uses the .qct maps
Instagram obviously
Bubble Galaxy
Matching with Friends
Scramble with Friends
Dice with buddies
Battlefriends
candy Crush
mini Golf matchup
chess.com
chess with friends
top quiz
to name just a few, why on earth did i get this Nokia 920, now no one wants to swap with me, big mistake coming to a windows Phone, love the UI, love the phone, hate the lack of Apps...apps make a smartphone, my fault should have done my research, just hope I can swap this phone any time soon
Snapchat, taptalk, instagram
I miss samsung photostudio available on wp7
Haven't switched from android yet, but seriously thinking about it. Will miss;
Minecraft PE, google voice, native google apps (gmail/gcal/g+/etc), and specific apps like memdroid that are easily replaceable
(ranked order)
Missed Hulu for the longest time till it came out last week.
