This may be old news but I thought I'd throw it out there anyways. From what I've read the Android 3.0 gingerbread SDK is supposedly to be released next week. I'm not really a developer of Android applications as of right now but it still seemed note worthy.
3.0 is gingerbread. I suspect your source is wrong.

I wasn't thinking straight.
Thats cool, because now we should see all new features?
Or it isnt the final Gingerbread SDK?
Cool!
What's your source on this?
It may be true. Gingerbread final is promised at the end of the year, so a beta SDK will probably pop up somewhere soon. Google's goal is to have as many apps ready to be installed as possible.
Does any one know if the epic will be updated to 2.3 or any rumors. About that?

Kind of the wrong section of the forum to ask, but doubtful none the less. Most phones only get one legit update.
The SDK has been released, will we see this on the SGS2 soon?
If not by Samsung by the rom gurus?

Nope. It's for tablets only, and I doubt anyone can manage to port it to our device.

You mean "could be bothered" to port it. I'm sure that someone _could_, but an OS designed for a tablet on a 4.3" screen would be a bit average.
Wait for the Cyanogen guys to port IceCream Sandwich (Android 4.0?) if/when it turns up. By that time Samsung will have dropped the SGS2 like last weeks spam sandwich and will be pushing the SGS3 instead.
Of course, that won't be until around Christmas sometime I'd be guessing.
God dammit, this is about the 3rd topic on the same thing. SDK does not equal the whole os, google have only put out the source for the gpl bits and a lot of android is apache.
And a 3.0 port wouldn't make much sense on a 4.3inch screen

this is the exact reason why Google hasn't made honeycomb open sourced.
Honeycomb is only meant for tablets. Until people learn to accept that it will remain closed. We've already seen android ruined by sub-par OEMs putting android on their **** hardware.
I hope not, honeycomb looks so messy at the moment
There really is no point putting honeycomb on a phone, the optimisations are mainly just for larger screens. If there is something nice in there it normally gets ripped out and cooked into a ROM or app anyway, its just a waste of time doing a full port IMHO.

Yeah i remember the thread in question,BUT it was practically useless most functions were not working on the phone.
Then i hope a dev could make a really good honeycomb theme in that case

Just gotta wait about 2~4 months for ice cream sandwich to release and then a bit longer for update. But it's gonna be awesome

If the kernel doesn't require any updated version, then couldn't we be able to port ICS?

Lol.. I was wondering when we are going to see this thread.
I don't need ICS. By next year, we all are going to be upgrade eligible.
By then ICS will be more polished.
As always, Google tends to dish out half-baked stuff. I expect lots of updates for ICS to settle.
Could we get CM8, whe that becomes available, now that we have GB source, and don't have to worry about other sources cming out?

If that's the case, then I'm almost positive we could get a port of ICS. I don't really care if it's official.
Then again, it's hard to be optimistic in the Epic 4G world.

It's actually not all that useless. SDK Builds, GApps, and some Kernel. Wouldn't that be enough?

There's no kernel or any rom for that matter that is used for ICS though.

I know alot of people are working on ICS but since honeycomb is older wouldnt it be easy to make a port? Just wondering.
You should port it real quick, and let us know which version was easier

Considering how far along ICS is and that Honeycomb is inferior, no.

ICS is better
ICS runs very smoothly so there is no point in porting honeycomb
Also Honeycomb is not open sourced.

Google developer Jean-Baptiste Queru, also known as JBQ, has announced on Google Groups that they are now releasing the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source code to Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
Jean-Baptiste Queru said:
We're releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.
The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.
The name of the development branch is jb-dev.
We recommend that you create new clients, even if you're working in
the master branch. It'll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.
Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus
S and Xoom will follow.

I think it's safe to say that Jelly Bean is about the first android update I haven't been overly excited and anxious to receive. That might also be because we don't even have the official one under it yet
Would be crazy excited about this though i know the atrix community is not what it was. We will get this update it will just take time

But the port is effectively a streamlined skin because we don't even have ICS yet, and that's because of NVidia/Motorola. Until all the required libs, etc., are released all anyone has is a themed GB!

No, I am serious......without NVidia playing ball we have no true ICS. You said it yourself.....not fully functional! We have pseudo ICS with features that don't work properly, and sub optimal OS. This isn't a slam against any dev. Just stating what I believe is fact. We had the kernels, etc., before any ICS porting started. We lack what the devs require for a true ICS OS.
So you can say its ICS but its crippled. That's why I say like a themed GB.
<edit> Simply put, we have a BMW with a Ford engine!

-> Implying that a BMW engine is better than Ford.
Anyway I get what you meant, but it's not fair to say that it's a themed GB, especially not fair to the devs that have worked so hard to get a working version. The only things that aren't working (at least for me) are HW Libs, Camera is a little jerky, and Browser rotation on most browsers. I think that's pretty good and can only get better once we get a finished kernel.

A small off topic, do you know that you can change version number in build.prop to whatever you want and then see it in About Phone?
I would think the devs would want to wait for proper ics kernel before starting jellybean, but you never know

And by saying this, I'm not criticizing the hard work of the developers that are trying to port ics to our beloved device... it's just normal without proper libs/drivers/whatever
