Okay, I'm assuming you all bought your hero's for what it was capable of when you bought it, seeing as there were no confirmed updates from HTC and even Google scheduled yet, so why does the majority get annoyed when their phone misses out on the latest 2.2 update? It still has all the features you bought it for. Any update at all is a positive, no update is neutral since your phone didn't lose anything, it just didn't gain anything either. Besides the fact that our Hero's already have basic flash support and are ahead of most devices in functionality just because it was ahead of its time when it got released?
I am somewhere in the middle: somewhat content with my Android 1.5 Hero and somewhat annoyed at the lack of updates. I think the trouble all comes down to convergence. Let me toss a couple thoughts your way. Generally speaking, in the recent past people have:
1) Paid full price for a computer (laptop, desktop, etc) and then promptly go out at get what ever Internet service provider they want (cable DSL) etc. The computer works on any network.
2) Paid a reduced price for mobile phones for the trade off of signing a contract and being tied to a particular provider. In many cases, only certain phones are available on certain networks. This is the complete opposite of the computer case in #1
3) Expected that their computer will be upgradeable (for a fee) over the years, at least until the hardware becomes obsolete. I know I've had XP, Vista, and Windows 7 on the same machine.
4) Expected that if they wanted new features on a phone, they would need to get a new phone.
Now the phones and computers are, too some extent, converging into one device. If I use my Android phone to check email, twitter, facebook, etc and never make voice calls - is it really a phone? No, it is just another Internet connected device for which my expectations are typically that I can upgrade the device until the hardware becomes obsolete. I didn't necessarily say that should be free, but it should be possible.
Another aspect that people expect of their computers, is that they can load virtually any application designed for that OS. Even today, most applications (if not all?) written for Windows 7 still run on XP. With Android, the applications seem to have been tied to the OS. For example, with my 1.5 phone I still can't use Google Voice search or Google Goggles? Why? My phone has a camera and a microphone, but for some reason you need to have 1.6 for them. Same for the free Google Navigation. You need to have a later version - just to run an application.
Again, I am somewhere in the middle. I have been VERY pleased with my HTC Hero. At the same time, I sure would like Google Voice search, Navigation, multiple gmail accounts, etc. I might even be willing to pay to update it (much like Apple makes people pay for iPod Touch updates). But shelling out $600 for a new phone (I buy unlocked - which is much cheaper for me in the long run) for those features does not seem worth it.
The lesson learned might be to always by the Google phone (i.e. Nexus One or whatever comes next). Google are responsible for pushing out those updates and it seems to happen fast!
I bouth my Hero after I saw the HTC tweet that they are working on the 2.1.
Update from 2.1 to 2.2 is a natural function of Android - it's OTA friendly. If a manufacturer declares Android, it declares everything what goes with it. If they don't want to spend time on such minor updates as 2.2, they should declare that as well: Android without updates. And they have not. So people are angry for not getting what they expect. And the expectatons are absolutely reasonable. That's why I will NOT buy any other HTC device. I learned that they dont't treat us, customers, fairly. They are going to do the same exact thing with the Desire as well. Not going down that path again.
I personally haven't heard one person moaning about not getting 2.2.
But people are expecting 2.1 due to no updates being given on the OS since the handset was released. Hero users were promised a long time ago that we would be getting 2.1 due to 1.6 being skipped, whereas other, lower spec models had that update.
You don't know what functionality will be added two updates later, so not having them is neutral, no one is oblidged to update their products and they can be discontinued whenever they wish. Does it matter? No, you got the phone based on the features it had when you bought it, the phone doesn't all of a sudden get worse because it didn't get an update.
I for one will purchase another HTC device when I'm done with my hero, simply because they deliver the best product with the best feature set regarding android, if updates are slow oh well, I buy phones for what they are capable of at the time of purchase since I can't look into the future, and neither can you.
So - all you set out to do with your original post was anger people and not take into account other peoples point of view? I took some time to provide some rational arguments.
Dont you expect to get updates for your computer? Graphics Drivers? Network Drivers? Operating Systems? Surely you don't just by a new computer everytime you need that functionality. You expect either the OS Vendor or the computer manufacturer to provide updates - both to create new features and fix bugs.
Bug fixes yes, but as they said those will be provided, and no I don't expect additional features, sure I'll be happy with new features but I didn't expect them. Even though phones are getting closer and closer to being computers they aren't.
How are they different?

I was happy with it when I got it, it was after all the flagship HTC device of 2009. But then about a month later 1.6 came out, and HTC said they were working on an upgrade to 1.6. This was delayed, then 2.0 came out and HTC suggested they would upgrade to 2.0 instead. The same happened with 2.1. But you are correct that they never really announced any upgrades officially, it was just announced on there twitter stream. Which is half the problem really. They kept suggesting that they were working on an upgrade, but kept pushing it back. Had they just done the 1.6 upgrade and then stopped, I don't think half as many people would be annoyed.
What HTC did wrong here was to give inconsistent information, along with delays and then kept junking what they had done and telling people they were working on something better. As a result, people kept hanging on, and being told that if they just waited a little longer then they would get an upgrade. If HTC had just come clean and updated us with offical announcements, or had stuck with 1.6 and been honest about a lack of improvement, then people wouldn't still be waiting.
Also, if you look at the iPhone model, they may charge for upgrades but the original 2G iPhone has only just gone out of support. Given that the Hero was the 2009 flagship Android device, and was still being sold way into 2010, its a little hard to stomach the idea that its out of support so quickly.
tl;dr HTC kept pissing us around and making us wait just a little longer, when it could have just said "not going to happen, here is 1.6, sorry" and this is annoying.
Are we buying a piece of hardware which is only going to be bug fixed, or are we buying hardware which is going to be updated for a certain amount of time even after they're no longer selling it?
In my opinion we're not just buying hardware, we're buying a software package behind it. That software needs to be updated, otherwise some major killer feature in a slightly newer version isn't possible for you to get - such as Google navigation, can turn a 6 month old phone which has the hardware capability into a device which is so frustrating.
I expect my device to last around 2 years, various networks offer contracts on these devices for 2 years, I think it's fair to expect updates to smart phones for that duration. I wouldn't expect every feature to be supported (eg. no live wallpaper if the device can't handle it), but it should be updated so it's possible to run the latest apps on it.
The phone manufacturers need to be honest on how long they plan to support these things, because it is becoming an issue. People feel abandoned if they pay hundreds of pounds on a device and never get an update, whilst other users pay the same amount and get multiple updates. If HTC doesn't want to release updates then that's fine - I'll just consider it before buying the device.

Nice argument. I hadn't thought about the convergence issue. You might well have hit the nail on the head.
I see your point, but if you had gotten any other non android smartphone besides the iPhone you wouldn't be getting significant feature set updates either.
But some people bought the hero because HTC said they were working on 2.1 months ago, others bought it because it was advertised "Android" and assumed you'd get Android updates. Others bought it because it's a good phone, but to the first two groups of people, the promise of new features was a reason for buying.
People are annoyed because HTC won't provide an update they've said they're working on (2.1), which seems to be a marketing interference to get as many people to buy a new device, rather than keep using their all one.
Also annoying is that we're stymied from having a generic OS made with drivers for all sorts of mobile hardware, but that's more of a philosophical annoyance.
I'm ticked off at the lack of update, not because I think I deserve an update per se, but more because I think I deserve all the features to work properly on my phone, and they don't.
And it's not like I could have tried it before I bought it either...
I've been an HTC user since 2003 and have always promoted the brand, but I don't think I'll get another one after this.

This was an artical on a norwegian mobile site
This summer, it was said that Android 2.2 version of the Galaxy S probably would get an official version in September. September is known as the passed, but the update is now just around the corner.
- We have estimated the deployment in mid-October, and hopefully the update will reach users during the next week, "said Stig Ove Langø, major account manager in Samsung Norway.
Your phone is much faster
Android OS 2.2, also called Froyo, is a major update. Some of the highlights:
The browser has been quicker to load sites with Javascrip
Applications will load two to five times faster that everything does not have to be before you start, but it all happen on the way
Processor performance of the phone in general should be better
Memory handling must be very much faster.
Exchange support is greatly improved
The phone can function as Wi-Fi router
In addition, there are a lot of other things that have changed when it comes to user interface. The full list can look at the Android development page.
Great

Ah, that's good news. amobil.no are usually more dependable than any operator. So this might just be the right deal...
it depends where the corner is...
i think is near too.
Samsung just tweeted this:

We’re very sorry about the delay with the release of Froyo. We're working on it round the clock & will post an update as soon as we have one
They like to tweet something like that every other week to make us think it's nearby. All we can do is wait.
hey tweeted that on the 8th i believe, and probably re-tweeted it again
i hope to god its just round the corner, im not moaning believe me, i moaned a hell of alot more with my hero and the delays for 2.1
GPS best be fixed, as no matter what rom i have flashed, it takes an age to lock on, and when it does at best im about 100 metres away from where i actually am
The filesystem is shocking also
all in all though, i love the music player, samsung always get that bit right
that gps problems is a hardware problem some guy who sended his phone back got a new antenna(different material) in it and then it worked fine! its with the first batch of phones. i got a phone that came with jm2 instead of fp3 from when i got it right out of the box and my phone is good and acurate on gps quick fix and very accurate 5-10 meters
Its a software problem with the GPS. i get 5-10 meters accuracy too. But when i slow down everything went jumping around... locking is not a problem for me. Its only that it cant rly lock me to one place. So i guess its a software problem
yea its jumping a little i just noticed in a gps monitoring program but it keeps locked on (rarely they go all gray for a sec but then its back again)(gives no problems in actual navigation) here and while driving and navigating in car with sygic mobile maps it never looses track

FroYo better be good or I'm selling and getting WP7. Although I was against it from the start its shaping up to better than Android.
I love Android but its not polished as an OS yet. It really isn't. Samsung's AWFUL software department doesn't help either.

So because Android still has a few quirks to sort out and needs some polish here and there, you're considering jumping to a spanking new, "fully rewritten" platform?
Among the features that are not yet present are cut, copy, and paste, full multitasking
[...]
Support for removable SD cards and tethering have also been left out of the OS. Microsoft claims this to be in the interest of data security for enterprise users. Windows Phone 7 will also not support Silverlight in the web browser or IPsec virtual private network (VPN) security, videocalling, a system-wide file manager, Bluetooth file transfers, and music player equalizers.

Hi everybody,
I've been thinking about developing an app that would allow you to use street view navigation for some time now. The only thing I'm hung up on is that the images for street view only appear to be referenced by coordinates. I'm new to development in the android scene so I'm not sure if this will be difficult to work with or if it would be as easy as requesting the data from the GPS. If anyone has any insights, recommendations, or feature requests, please let me know. The app would be paid on the market but I would of course make it available here for you guys on xda, because I think plenty of people on here deserve to have free access to innovative apps.
Sent from my HTC Incredible
I have not worked with the GPS so no advice from me, how ever I will say that I have wanted this for a very long time If you pull this off, I will most likely purchase it to donate even if it is provided to us XDA guys for free. I hope you can get this going and I wish you the best of luck!
the ideas good but the image rendering will hammer any data connection and unless you have 3g minimum the user experience wouldnt be good the memory cache would have to be big as well to storge the streetview images ahead of where your position
Thanks
alix776, thanks for the valuable input, upon reading it, I would have to say that it's probably not a good idea to continue developing it, because, as you said, users would suffer from a poor user experience, and it wouldn't be available in areas with poor 3g. Perhaps it will be something that's in our future with verizon soon rolling out their LTE 4G, but for now, I think it's best to let it die. I think I got beat to the punch anyway, because there is a project that is scheduled for release in the very near future. It's called "Wikitude Drive," and is an AR (augmented reality) gps navigation app, which uses the camera to produce the image you see. This idea is a major improvement on mine (well, I bet other people thought of it too, so I can't really take credit for it) in many ways:
- Live imagery ensures that the image is consistent with what the user sees from the driver's seat
- Instead of showing the angle that the camera that took the street view images, the user sees exactly what they're doing, no matter what, which is great, because if you stare at the screen, you are less likely to lose sight of where you're going than if you were looking at a nonvolatile resource
- The image is produced locally on the phone, rather than using the 3g connection, which means a much happier carrier, and also a better user experience than with street view.
- It looks way cooler than anything I could design with street view, as the AR features make for a very nicely rendered UI.
I encourage anyone who runs across this thread to check out Wikitude Drive at the developer's website http://www.wikitude.org/drive
It seems that the app was (is?) in beta this summer, and was scheduled for full release this August, but it has been pushed back many times. I'm sure it will be out and in our pockets soon enough, but until then, I'll be patiently waiting. It looks quite worth the wait, and I bet they must be working very hard to encounter and fix bugs that they find.
Anyway, I wish you all well, and thanks for the interest.
Friends, have already heard the complaints about Lags, Music crackling, and bad battery (mainly the screen is responsible).
Besides this I would like to know the following:
- How is the 5MP Camera with dual-LED flash?
Comparable or better than that of HTC Desire or Galaxy S
- The physical QWERTY - Is it fun and really fast to type with it? How's the adjustment to tap the screen to send the message after typing. (normally a scrollball or touch pad would do the job faster).
- 3D gaming - How's it the 3D performance, do all the Android High-End games run smoothly.
-The new email system or software implemented - Does it support Inline message editing of forwarded Emails?
- Can you do a T9 contact search directly from the Desktop? Is there a T9 dialer?
How is the 5MP Camera with dual-LED flash? - just fine
Comparable or better than that of HTC Desire or Galaxy S - not even a valid comparison
- The physical QWERTY - Is it fun and really fast to type with it? How's the adjustment to tap the screen to send the message after typing. (normally a scrollball or touch pad would do the job faster). Awesome keyboard, how is pressing something quicker than touching something?
- 3D gaming - How's it the 3D performance, do all the Android High-End games run smoothly. don't know
-The new email system or software implemented - Does it support Inline message editing of forwarded Emails? - nope
- Can you do a T9 contact search directly from the Desktop? Is there a T9 dialer? no, and yes.
I hated the on screen keyboard of my HTC Desire. What ever HTC did to the keyboard it seems like its even harder to type than with the stock keyboard.
Not making a mistake every sentence is wonderful.
Hi guys,
I'm seriously considering buying this phone. So I thought I could just add up to this post rather than start a new thread asking questions about the features.
I didn happen to notice this thread and sent the same given below as a PM to Jibriel
So let me outline my buying rationale I want a blackberry-ish phone which I can use without a blackberry rate data plans in India. I want this phone to do primarily one thing, sync gtalk and gmail / facebook perfectly. I can take a hit on other functions but not this. I am a noob so one or 2 of my questions will be pretty dumb.
1. Where to buy the phone?
I'm in India. So will it suffice if I buy the phone from amazon wireless with the replacement phone option
wireless.amazon.com/dp/B004AM5AWM (i cannot post links as this is my first post so not providing it as a hyperlink).
Is there any better option available. I know people traveling to and from the US, so shipping within continental US option will do and I dont need a world shipping option.
2. How do I unlock?
So apparently from other posts I see a guy can provide a 8 numerical unlock code to unlock the phone for other GSM carries. So if I buy the phone using option 1, will the same $8 trick work for me.
3. Now for dumb question, I want to know if Gtalk is running in background and if someone sends me an IM then will I be notified of the IM automatically? Or should I refresh the app manually to get latest updates? Same thing for facebook.
I have long commute to work. So this answer will be major influencing factor on my buying decision.
4. How is the call quality? I have some hearing difficulties. But its not bad enough to use a hearing aid. I have heard some issue with call qualities being poor. Is anyone using an unlocked phone with GSM carries experienced any issues? Bad lemons are ones luck, just trying to determine if issue is widespread.
I know my list is long. But I dont want to spend $449 just because I would really like to own it. Any inputs/feedback on the above questions will be greatly appreciated.

// Buy it from Amazon, eBay or anywhere else your gonna get the same phone. Some of the sites are selling it unlocked and some really cheap. I got mine for $611 and happen to see a a few sites selling for less, so do your research carefully.
2. How do I unlock?

// Android has evolved significantly and most messaging apps support Push notification. If you aren't aware Facebook now supports Chat & Push notification. GTalk will do the same, but I have removed it as it runs as a service hence draining battery and consuming RAM - I suggest using Fring instead.
4. How is the call quality? I have some hearing difficulties. But its not bad enough to use a hearing aid. I have heard some issue with call qualities being poor. // Phone, speaker and speaker phone clarity is far supperior than Blackberry and even the Galaxy S. The camera is also just right for your daily photo shots. Flash is nice and bright. The phone overall is just right out of the box (except the bloatware) which can be removed via Titanium backup. Cell reception and surfing on GPRS is very fast. The touchscreen is very responsive and multi-touch can be compared to that of an iPhone.
The scrolling of web paged is smooth as silk and apps operate really fast.
ITS A MUST BUY COMPARED TO BLACKBERRY?

I'm not talking about rooting. But just unlocking it to work with GSM carriers in India.

No it doesn't void the Warranty. Besides where are you going to find the support for Verizon phones in India. If something goes wrong, Motorola India is not going to provide any support since the phone isn't officially available here and neither do they have the hardware to support it.
....Unless you have means to send it back to the US.
i know a few ppl who will be travelling to n fro for the next couple of months. So worst case some1 can take it back and return it. So thats why I prefer to buy from amazon if its few $$ more expensive than ebay and other stuff.
but yah i got all the info i to convince me to blow $449
i will get the handset only in 2nd week of jan then i will strt a new thread for the set up procedures
Dude. You can win one on ebay for much less than 450. I saw ended auctions from sellers with very good feedback starting from 375 $$.

I bought mine and never has a reboot issue till date (knock on wood)
Hey there, thanks for reading.
I'm looking for a new smartphone to replace my 2-year-old HTC Touch 3G.
I'll probably be purchasing either an Android or a WP7 phone. Important to know is that I live in the Netherlands, so WP7 hasn't officially launched here just yet. However, I do know about the marketplace unlockers and such.
The Omnia 7 is on the top of my list, closely followed by the Dell Venue Pro (nearly impossible to get here) which are in turn followed by high-end Android phones like the Nexus S, Galaxy S, Desire, etc.
The thing I'd like to know about the Omnia 7 is if you encountered any oddities or things worth mentioning.
I'd also like to hear about any good or bad surprises, so that I can make up my mind.
Lastly, I'm very interested in the build quality - has any of you accidentally dropped it? If so, please describe the situation and any damage.
And how's the screen holding up against scratches?
Thanks in advance!
P.s: I've noticed that the WP7 vs Android discussion is rather tense - but please keep it civil - I don't wanna miss out on any advice because my topic gets locked
Obviously, buying a WP7 phone you will experience the usual problems of that. There aren't any devastating bugs I have encountered yet, but a few iritating ones, such as being unable to update trial apps through the market, meaning you have to unistall and reinstall them, or apps crashing unexpectedly.
The batery life seems to be pretty good on my Omnia seven, usually lasting through the whole day with moderate usage.
The build quality is surprisingly good, better than I expected, seeing as it is a Samsung phone. The feel is very nice, and seems to be pretty solid. I have dropped my phone a few times, and only have a few, very minor, scratches on the screen (almost unnoticeable). Also, the screen is amazing, particularly with all the black used in the OS.
The main annoyance with the Omnia 7 is that the battery cover seems to fall off quite easily. Drop it onto even a soft surface, and the battery cover will fall off, sometimes taking the battery with it.
As to WP7 vs Android, I have used both, and I'm not sure which I prefer. WP7 is much slicker and smoother, from what I've found, but obviously is less open and customisable than android. Depends what you want really, but either is a pretty good bet in my eyes. I only went for the Omnia 7 because I wanted to try something new.
Dutch user here. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it. I'm an avid WM user and only once switched over to Blackberry. But I came back and am loving it. The things is just so damn well put together.
I compared it with a friend who bought a Samsung Android phone recently (forgot which one, sorry). But while Android is in no way a bad system, the clean interface and bright screen of the Omnia 7 just sold it for me.
The only thing that bugged me today was when I wanted to send a contact number to someone by text. Ended up having to write it down on paper because of the lack of copy/paste. But for the rest I highly recommend it.
I got mine on Friday, tired of waiting for the Dell Venue Pro. I bought it on ebay Germany as it's the only country selling the 16GB. So far, no bug or bad surprise except I can't sign in on twitter (that's an issue with the app itself as many reviewers on the marketplace have mentioned it).
Coming from the HTC HD2 it feels a bit bare bone in functionality but then again there are 3 updates planned for this year (including the copy/paste one).
Build quality seems good but I try to never take risks with screens so I'm actively looking for a case/pouch for it.
I had an xbox 360 and zune and I'm a hotmail user so it all come together very well, if you're much more into Google maybe you should get Android, only you know. They're different OS with a different approach, both are good .
Allright, thanks a lot for the quick replies.
Froggenstein, since you're Dutch just like me - Which location did you choose for your live account, and how much trouble was it to set everything up to get the marketplace and such working? And which marketplace do you visit (Uk/US/...)?
From what I've read it probably wasn't hard, but I always enjoy confirmation
Speaking for the phone itself, it's a good solid build, good quality, and has a nice little feature with the USB port cover (keeps the dust out). I've never had a problem with the battery cover coming off... but then I don't drop it
As for WP7, I'm "lucky" enough to have a UK account (but only because I cant change country) so I have access to the marketplace and Zune Pass etc. If these services are restricted for you then that's a fair chunk of functionality missing. Also, I've heard Bing Maps in Poland is near useless - maybe the same in the Netherlands?

Thanks for the reply.
I changed my Live account to UK, so i hope i can just use it without restrictions. Else i'll just make a new one.
I checked the desktop version of Bing maps, and though the sattelite images are pretty outdated the roads and stuff are actually on par with Google. Assuminf desktop and wp7 use the same database, it should be fine.
I lived in the US for a couple of months, so I have a US bank account, including a US Zune Pass and XBOX account. So that made US the location for my live account. Rumour has it you can use those prepaid creditcards for a US account, but I haven't looked into that in detail. I have had absolutely zero problems with location limitations after that. As long as your live account is set for a location, and your phone matches that location, you should be good.
Im in Netherlands and use a UK live account with ING (netherlands) credit card and all works fine.
Samsung Omnia 7 is the best, easiest to use and smoothest phone I ever had.
