monopolies are never good.

Although I agree that monopolies or the such almost never benefit the consumer, the probability that AT&T will buy T-Mobile increases every given day with the recent AT&T ads that advocate their point being aired. So, if T-Mobile is up for grabs, I as a consumer would rather have Google own the brand instead of it being absorbed into another carrier. At least then, T-Mobile would have a little more leverage in the market with Nexus device exclusivity and the likes. I mean, Verizon has 1) Tons of coverage across the country and 2) both the iPhone and Android devices. Sprint's selling point is that they have some of the most innovative HTC devices out there so if T-Mobile had exclusivity rights with Google directly, then they could be propelled back into a competitive spot as a national carrier. Sorry for the post being so long, but T-Mobile was the first carrier to adopt Android, as many fans will tell you, and it pains me to see them tank just because other carriers are snatching up some of the best devices from the best manufacturers hence my aforementioned standpoint.

Google buying tmobile would be retarded. That awesome customer service that T is known for....gone. You guys need to face the facts...DT is selling T because it's losing money and costumers regularly now. It's not worth it to them to invest in the deployment of faster service anymore. They see T as having the best shot of profitabilty as a sale. If att buys it they buy it at a decent price. If it fails....it goes to tne next highedt bidder(s). So instead of ending up with awesome coverage with higher prices we will more than likely end up with whatever 4th rate carrier piggybacks on att network in your area.
Google is advertising company...what makes you think they are qualified to run a mobile phone and data service? They couldnt even provide CS for the N1.
Remember, tmobile will be sold...either as a company or as spectrum.

I wouldnt mind betting my cell service from Google....

Why would it be retarded for google to buy t-mobile? First they have the money needed to make a company like that profitable, and losing money to google is probably like pissing water, they are gigantic.
And if they did buy T-Mobile, why would Google phones only be available through "Google Mobile"? Google could sell to every person and have exclusive phones for their GMobile service... Haha GMobile niceeee....
By having a company like T-Mobile around this entire time it has kept ATT and Verizon at bay with pricing and competition. T-Mobile has a large enough customer base, and network built up that if someone was unhappy with one of the two big guys you would just go to T-Mobile and smile at the end of the day not realizing why you didn't go with T-Mobile in the first place and save some money so you could buy a few extra bags of weed. Because Google is not a mobile phone company, nor a telephone company. Their products are continually in beta. Do you not remember the customer service people had with the nexus one? There's a reason they don't sell phones directly anymore. Google buying Tmobile would make me switch faster than when ATT buys them.

If they bought T-Mobile they wouldn't have terrible customer service. You're implying all of the current staff of t-mobile would just vanish, which I doubt would happen if they bought T-Mobile. They would probably keep most everything the same. They would be buying the company, not just changing the name.

It would be retarded because:
A) There is no rumor, no speculation of google EVER buying any carrier.
B) Google would obviously want to promote their own carrier, so most of their phones that are flagships would be their carriers only, which would make other carriers jealous.
C) ATT is buying TMO get the **** over it. Dont like it? Go move to Verzion, sprint or even... METRO.

Why does Sprint continually lose money every quarter?

Just read over on Engadget how Sprint lost $760 million last quarter. Why do you think they continually do so bad? Is it because of poor sales or poor business/financial decisions (debt left over from merger or otherwise)? Their coverage is awesome, their 3G speeds are often better than Verizon's, they have 4G on tap, customer service has never given me any trouble, I can upgrade my phone annually, and the plans offer way more features and are still cheaper than the competition. The list is endless, there's really no other carrier I'd rather be on. Do others not feel the same way? Is their marketing failing?
I feel the same way. Their advertisements always seem good. I feel like they don't advertise as heavily as any of the other carriers here.
Maybe from all the expanding and changes they've done? Don't know though. I haven't had any problems at all. Their customer service always corrects problems, even crediting a lot of charges back.. and coverage is good. A lot happier then I was with at&t

I'm sure the cost of upgrading to 4G has a lot to do with it. Plus I am ripping them off with my unlimited everything for $65 a month!!

It wasnt until recently that they had good phones. I remember a few years back, most of their phones were garbage. Everyone jumpped ship and moved to ATT due to the fact that you could pull the sim card, and switch phones as you pleased. All the phones from Asia were flocking over to the US and everyone had some new Nokia, Ericson, or some other great phone.
Sprint had junk. Some of us probably rode that out, and FINALLY they are getting some good phones...I've been on Sprint for almost 12 years now. I did move to VZW for 2 years, but ended up coming back to Sprint.
makes you wonder how they are even sustainable loosing that type of money every quarter.
The Nextel merger is STILL hurting them badly. Plus, they offer the cheapest plans but for the longest time they did not have the devices people wanted. Now they have the devices but people are stuck in contracts with other carriers. Another thing is advertisement and word of mouth. Sprint has never had the most eye-catching commercials. Us former Palm Pre users know the effect bad or no advertisement can hurt you. And I agree, the Nascar thing is wasted money when you have to spend more money rolling out 4G nationwide.

Oh...wow...Sprint removed it that quick....It basically stated that Sprint has removed or is in the process of removing the quote about the Evo is better than the iphone, in it's commercials. So the article speculated that maybe Sprint is in talks with Apple about possibly bringing the iphone to Sprint. It also stated that this was the same process that Verizon went through...they first made these commercials going against the iphone/att, then they stopped and now they have the iphone.
Awesome, I'm one of the ones that would actually like an iPhone on Sprint.
All the plan changes make sense as well, but it could be for something else.

I did notice the iPhone thing gone from the ad, but I dont think apple will release the iphone on sprint. I suppose they could, it just doesnt seem likely to me and this is not much to base an assumption on
It's coming. Since Verizon has a CDMA iPhone, Sprint will have it as well. Apple needs to get that darn phone on as many carriers as possible since they are being hammered by Android phones on ALL major carriers. It makes good business since for Apple, Verizon & Sprint BUT not us customers since it raises our plans and Sprint will eventually goto a tiered data plan instead of unlimited like Verizon did. It's just a matter of time. They make money, we grab our ankles

Potential Sprint and T-Mobile Merger?

I just read about this on the Washington Post. What are yall thoughts regarding a merger between T-mobile and Sprint?
Washington Post Article
Personally, I think it sucks. Not sure how it could benefit the consumer, or the manufacturers... I don't like the idea of there only being 3 big players.... I dont like the idea of GSM/CDMA joining... not even sure how that would work.
Nothing seems beneficial....
This Will Not Be Good,
for 1, which system are they really going to end up using ? Sprint is CDMA my Bet this will be bad for the consumer
Mergers like these inevitably only benefit the Company not the consumer. Ever notice that when one company raises prices the other do so as well? The only "hold mechanism" that prevents this is rigorous competition. When there is only a duo or tri-opoloy then corporate price fixing becomes a sure thing. Remember when (maybe most are not old enough) cable TV was 10 major players, Now ? 3, and what happened as a result of all the mergers and acquisitions ? higher prices and less selection.
On another note : Do you remember SamsungJohn ? and his Great announcement, I wonder if this is it. If it is .........we're getting HOSED..............
I think its very good. as long as they provide the same plan after merger
anyways, Sprint is starting 4g rollout, which is nice for future.
Rooted Samsung Vibrant with Froyo KA6
Recovery: ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2
Radio/Modem: KA6
Kernel: Stock+Voodoo
I heard about that a while ago too. Then there would be "the big three ". The question that comes to mind is, how does that benefit us? lower bills? Better phones? Better network?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Be assured this isn't about what's best for the customers. It's about what's best for the companies staying profitable.
I don't see any personal benefit from it.
Most likely they'll keep the GSM and CDMA networks and gradually migrate everyone over to LTE.
Yeah, there is NO WAY this benefits the consumer. Likely less high-end phones (dont need as many rollouts/marketing involved)... less need for prices to stay low (since if all 3 started raising prices, the consumer has no choice).
I cant articulate just how much I hate the idea of it.

Yeah I've been hearing these rumors for over a year now.
Don't take away the great plans or SIMs and maybe we'll be good.
Oh no, Sprint just likes to ruin my mobile life I remember a few years back when I got my first Nextel and discovered Howard Forums. I loved my Nextels and learned to make some good money selling customized Nextels & parting out the LE phones. Then the rumors came about the Sprint Nextel merger. They destroyed Nextel. I went back to TMobile and now this again! Capitalism at it's best.
Lets see, best customer satisfaction? T mobile
Best prices? T mobile
Acceptable service? T mobile
Family friendly plans? T mobile
Unlimited cheap data? T mobile
Open architecture? Gsm phones, unlocked phones compatibility?

isnt tmo owned by deutschtelecom also?
And also I dont see how a merger between 2 companies using 2 different cell technologies will be beneficial. Ifanything tmobile should juststick with offering the cheapest plans and best customer service and slowly but surely you will see people migrate over slower...

Good service is geographical. I live in LA and my service is very spotty. I worked for T-mobile for almost 4.5 years and my reception changed everytime I moved. Right now it is absolutely horrible but I stay on because I have a good price.
After reading a few articles about the potential merger I get the idea that they are not looking to integrate their systems but cut the operations cost that they are incurring, at least for the near short term. In reality it is not written anywhere that if two companies merge they must use one system or another. It would be a major game changer for both of these companies to merge and still use each carriers network (talk about flexibility). Regardless if they companies merge though prices will continue to go up. Data has become such a big commodity that people are willing to pay more for it regardless of who they have.
Cliffnotes: In my opinion they will only be merging operations for the first few years to cut costs, see which provider can retain the most amount of customers and go from there.
Is sprint even as big as tmobile is? Its sad that all these companies are trying to charge as much as possible for data...
And my biggest problem with tmobile is I pay an additional 20 bucks for my data service... And its supposedly unlimited.. But the minute I hit that 5gb cap I get slowed to literally dial up speed... Thanks tmobile!!! So the data really isnt unlimited, and I cant even purchase more bandwith

Agreed, its tricky advertising regarding unlimited data. But that's the best you can get in USA . At least they don't charge for excess data past 5GB. No one offers unlimited data for that price. For example AT&T offers 2GB for $20 you are paying plus an additional $5, not to mention overage fees...

Actually it is unlimited. Speed is limited to 3/4-g until 5GB, then throttled, can't really complain for that. I'd take this over $500 or so extra per GB of ATT overage

As long as they don't rape my plan, I can live with it. Just means more people I can call on the same network.
This pretty much means bye bye to my G2. ATT is probably gonna raise the plan prices and get rid of unlimited data.
Goes to check out the Verizon android phones.
Man. I was on Cingular since it was SouthwesternBellWireless, and refused to deal with the snobs at AT&T. Then (sorta-kinda) I ended up on AT&T anyways, just dumped them for T-Mobile in November, and now I'm going to end up BACK on AT&T. I just can't freakin get away from them.
I got a G2 that says Verizon buys either Sprint or MetroPCS before the end of the year.
WTF

If it passes regulatory approval I'm jumping ship, the only option left for affordable plans with unlimited data is Sprint... I wish I'd waited to see the dual core phones so I could upgrade and jump ship at the same time.
Prepare for crappy phone AND customer service.
I mostly use wifi when I'm using my data. This does **** suck. If it's true, I'm jumping to Verizon when my contract's up next year.
Sigh

Awesome! T-Mobile service BLOWS if you're not near a major city... this is very beneficial for me.
Damn this sucks
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I know it's soon but so many questions! What happens to our 3G/4G bands and phones?!? My grandfathered T-Zones plans from like 7 years ago?! The beloved customer service?!
AT&T will have a GSM monopoly. What a nightmare.
I don't know what to say.

Well when you think about it, most people who HAVE tmobile LIVE near a major city. This benefits no one except the people who should've been with at&t ._.

Typical...
I left Sprint for my business account in February after 9 years and moved on to one of my family T-Mobile accounts dating back to the Voicestream days, SPECIFICALLY because I don't want the AT&T or Verizon headaches.
Being responsible for various company's telecom, data and mobile services, I've dealt with every single one of the carriers over the past 16 years, and can say without hesitation that T-Mobile has the BEST customer service. AT&T is the absolute worst, with the possible exception of Orange or Vodafone-AG.
I had dared to dream that T-Mobile and Sprint would reach an agreement, reach critical mass and survive as a viable alternative to the AT&T-Verizon hegemony.
IMHO, it is unrealistic to expect Congress to review this merger in an unbiased manner. AT&T and T-Mobile have a legion of lobbyists already "explaining" the value & importance of this transaction to our elected officials; as money flows into re-election campaign funds, elaborate "fact finding missions" and junkets to European destinations are planned & payed for; college scholarships are awarded to family members through obscure networks of shell organizations...
Then again, maybe our elected officials will surprise me... we're still going to get that hopey-changey thing someone was selling in 2008, right?
Seriously, F AT&T, they are going to ruin everything that is good about T-mobile.
Say bye-bye to phones like the G2 when AT&T is around, they're notoriously terrible about progressing stock android devices, and have always stopped the side-loading of non-market apps on every Android phone they have.
As long as they don't get rid of non contract Even More+ plans and keep my plan cheap, I don't really care, but I can only imagine prices and everything are going up. Not to mention that we're gonna more than likely lose unlimited data, and lose free tethering.
T-mobile has been fantastic to me and its a great deal, but I just have a bad feeling nothing is getting better with this except coverage. Id rather have poor coverage than everything else that AT&T is going to do to wreck a great carrier.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not with AT&T for a damn reason - they suck!!! I could go all day listing every reason why they suck but it's too nice outside. This just messed up my whole damn day. Really, will this even pass the check points? I mean they will have a monopoly for the most part on ALL gsm service in the CONUS.
It's almost April... maybe this is just an early joke, a very sick one at that and not even funny.
I hate Motorola's implemintation of Android and since those are the only decent Android phones Verizon carries - Sprint, here I come. I live in their home city anyway.

[Q] Google testing High speed Fiber in KC, possible they could buy Sprint?

Today while reading Dsl reports, I saw that Google has picked Kansas City as its test bed for their 1gbps fiber internet.
And a few people have mentioned that Google could buy Sprint, I think this could be a very good thing IMHO.
But im not at all familiar with stuff like this, so thats why i posted this to see the pro or cons of maybe Google buying Sprint.

Man Ive been talking hard about Sprint/Google merge since AT&T pulled their fast one.
Could such merge happen? I think so this is why,
Sprint & google had to be in discussion for some time knowing what AT&T was up to setting the stage.
Google would be taking a big chance but it would be in both best interest to make such deal happen seeing Googles best friend was T-mobile which will be no more & that Verizon , ATT are iphone happy singing new deals with Apple.
I'm betting Apple/Verizon deal had some strings attached to turn away future google goods , I'm sure V would have no problem with that seeing all Android device currently on their shelf are binged out which has been not giving google freedom needed to truly succeed .
At&T purchases T-mobile puts MAJOR MAJOR dent into Android so were does that leave google? Not in good shape with other carriers Big $$ will be lost.
If google keeps pumping Sprint up with the goods and play well merge would only make sense balls in their court they truly control their future.
Good question. Easy to look at the financials as both companies are public.
Sprint is worth about $14 billion right now. Google has $9 billion in cash and $34 billion in cash and short term investments.
So yes, Google could afford to buy Sprint.

Well not so fast financials does not determine the value of a company. T-Mobile is selling for 39 billion and Sprint has way more spectrum and customers so Sprint would by my account be worth more.

You are definitely correct. Sprint is worth 14 billion but Sprint also has a ton more cash in hand.
This isn't just high speed fiber, this is a whole new way of delivering the internet with mass hubs/processors, in a mobile capacity, grouped together in any random location, delivering up to a Gigabyte of speed.
Very progressive thinking from Google that started about 12 years ago when they started purchasing the containers to use as the hubs.
One thing I've been saying for years is that we have worked flawlessly to make evberything faster, except the main pipeline, since 1997 when the first cable internet connections started to be offered.
That's 14 years of a 10 mg cap. Glad to see that Google has been wondering the same thing.
The words getting out tomorrow should be interesting
http://www.deadzones.com/2011/03/will-google-eventually-buy-sprint.html
It would probably be a cash + stock + debt deal, if Google was to buy Sprint. Give Sprint shareholders like 1/5 - 1/3 share of Google stock for each Sprint share, plus a few billion in cash, or something like that.
This merger would make LOTS of sense for both parties. And if VZ was really looking to sell their FiOS operations to Google, it would make The Goog a nicely vertically integrated company: fiber, phone, and search/data/apps in the cloud.
Methinks this could go down -- and sooner than we think. Which would be a huge benefit to Sprint subs.
My one concern is, there was lots of fiber laid in the late 90's - early '00s that still dark (anyone remember Global Crossing?) so theres lots of unused capacity out there. How does that impact Google wanting to lay fiber in other areas? Or does Google look to buy some of that unused fiber and become an ISP??? Hmmmm...
This could be great news, especially with companies like HTC potentially locking their phones. This way, we know we'll have some good pure google phones... hopefully.
Well I'm looking very forward to Google mobile hope it happens.
3 major carriers competition remains lots of choice and oh ya , We get some kick butt hardware
I definitely am mixed. On the one hand I hate these big mergers because it means less choice. But I really like both sprint and android.
Sprint is getting the nexus s and google voice so it looks like they are boosting the relationship up a notch.

This merger would leave more choice.
If Google doesn't buy Sprint Verizon will which would be bad for market locking consumer into 2 choices
i think it would be a smart choice for Google and i hope they do it then we can get all there new ideas in the updates and stuff for there phones =]
I've been up to the Google hq in norcal and my uncle is a contractor that is part of the fiber build that is going down with Google and ya its going to be huge if and when Google goes forward with the project super huge speeds

It would be a heck of an antitrust court case.
Imagine if Microsoft bought a wireless carrier, that would never get through the ftc.
maybe this would, who knows.
I'm surprised no one mentioned all of Sprints debt. Regardless, if Google bought them they would most likely pay it of to bring their credit rating up.
Another, maybe, coincidence is google's promise to bring 1gigabit speeds to everyone. True 4G is a minimum 1gbit and Sprint is in desperate need of a high speed fiber network for their back haul.
