Best Camera Settings for Z3
I've found these to be the best settings IMHO:
Mode: Manual
Resolution: 15.5MP
Focus Mode: Touch focus
ISO: 200
Metering: Face (or Spot)
Everything else is Off. Manual comes out better than Auto (I've done comparisons). On a standalone Sony camera however, Superior Mode is better than Standard Mode.

Xperia Z Camera Setting 12MP & 13MP

Hi Guys
I found out that , if we use superior auto mode in camera setting , the resolution auto changed to 12MP and if we use normal mode...it will change back to 13MP. Any different in photo quality ? I haven't really test it out yet ..so i'm not sure with the result...:cyclops:
Please check it out and upload some sample photos and videos in full resolution

That's down to the hdr set in auto. Reduces the quality.
Thread in themes and apps to upload photos. I've done a quick comparison, and reckon the camera app lets the hardware down

Where's my macro Samsung?!

As the title says I've used a Galaxy S3 for a year and just now I jumped the wagon into the Note line but I used to take macro shots at a daily basis but with this camera there's just no option and in auto mode it isn't as macro as it should be, why is this feature gone? Do you guys have any solution?

Different Camera app.
I ditched Stock Camera because there's no Manual mode. (or if there is I haven't found it.) I'm a photographer, I don't need some idiot in a factory choosing the settings for me...
Ditto, sometimes I just want to do it by myself and this camera is neither for average Joe's or for us what app are you using?

ProCapture. It doesn't have an ISO setting (which is irritating), but it does have most other settings. I don't bother looking for an aperture or shutterspeed setting on a mobile device as those settings have little function on a smartphone, but for the everyday use, this app functions best out of all I've tried.
Plus it has a mute setting. It is rather slow at 13MP in terms of saving, though.
I've also got PhotoFX Zoom, ShotControl and FV5 installed.
Truth be told I haven't managed to find a perfect camera app for photographers. Funny how all of android is customisable and user-controlled... except the camera, which appears to be aimed at the average iSheep.
Focal (by Chainfire) looks promising, but is a rather unstable Beta.
If anyone has any suggestions, please do share. Spare me the 'effects-cameras' though. I know how to use Photoshop. Something that works with RAW files would be absolutely ideal.

Improving front and back camera performance

Hey guys,
Recently got my z2 and I am not entirely pleased with camera performance, especially in low light.
What kind of camera improvements are there? How different is the camera performance on let's say, CM rom?
I've used HTC m7, iPhone 5, galaxy s3 and s5 and now z2 but the cameras never matched up to my iPhone 5.

What settings do you use for low light
---------- Post added at 09:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:02 PM ----------
I did a fast compare with my daughter's iphone5s and my colleagues iphone 6 and my z2 was fare better in low light
I use auto because I usually don't have time to fiddle around with manual when I need to take a quick picture.
At thread setter would you mind gave us a proof with z2 and iPhone 5 picture comparison. Especially low light?

Auto mod isn't something you should take to compare with other devices.
I agree, Sony could write better camera code but they didn't...
Auto mod is similar to taking pictures with idiot camera.
Find someone who is professional photographer or he/she knows a bit of that topic and ask him/her to shoot few pictures with your device using manual settings...
You'll be surprised how good camera is on Z1/Z2...
As I said, it would be great to have good auto mod and be able to take a picture with a single button pressed but if we don't have that that doesn't mean we have awful camera...
And comparation to iPhone 5 is kinda funny...
I tried iPhone 4 and 5 camera and it cannot be compared to Z2...
Picts are grainy and they aren't even close with colors on Z2 pictures.
Z2 has rich colors and better contrast, you just have to find someone who can show you how to set up camera...
Alright so if I am out at a bar with friends am I supposed go to manual settings and adjust them while everyone waits idk 20-40 seconds? I guess if you get good at it you can change manual settings in less than 10 seconds. If I am on a trip somewhere and I am taking still objects, perhaps I can take my time to adjust the settings.
I wish I still had my iPhone 5 to take comparison pictures in auto modes of each phone. No phone matched the auto picture quality in low light ( speed of shutter, or quality).
I am not bashing z2 camera, and especially since I am in a z2 forum, of course most of the time people will say that z2 is a better phone. It just seems that auto mode on z2 is lacking and Sony could just update the software to remedy this.
You can set your manual mode and open camera from app drawe, that way you'll go to manual mode and your settings.
If you open camera with camera button it'll go straight to auto mode.
As I said...
It would be better to have great auto mode but we don't have it...
If you want to use this device you'll have to accept that.
Who knows, maybe Sony rewrite camera drivers and software for Android 5.0..

Its really hard to convince that you're iphone 5 is better than z2 cause my wife is a iphone fanatic since 4s so I can used her iPhone everytime and as I can recall that iphone 5s is way better than 5 in terms of photo quality. I can agree that front of z2 is not good at low light but in terms of back camera, a sample photo with same condition and environment is a good way for photo comparison.

Unfortunately the auto mode on the Sony cameraphones are piss poor! It gets the white balance wrong particularly under natural lighting resulting in washed looking colours.
It tends to over expose everything and cranks up the iso too high to avoid blurring but increasing the luminescent noise in the process.
There's no way around this unfortunately, not right now anyway. You'll have to set the camera up manually.
I'd say use auto white balance under artificial lighting or at night but always choose the daylight setting under natural light.
When you press the two stage shutter down, it locks focus and exposure so you can see if it's over or under exposed and then adjust accordingly.
For ISO, I'd say don't go above 400 even at night. 50 for very good and daylight conditions. 100 to 200 for okay lighting and 400 when shooting under low lighting.
It's a fiddly camera! No escaping that.
Agreed Sony needs to sort out the poor auto mode or scrap it completely. It's hopeless!

Alternative App that makes best quality photos

Hi there,
As everyone knows, default camera app of sony sucks. I have tried a lot of alternative applications. For me the best results is from Snap Camera with settings 20mpx, camera api2, jpeg quality Best, opengl2, auto scene auto whitebalance, auto flash. These settings allows me to take much sharper images tested on my small facial hair. BUT! Camera is very overheating, after few minutes (5-6 shots) i have started sony camera and it alerted that camera is too hot, so it shuts down.
Snap camera allows HDR in 20mpx also any scene, its not limited as sony-s camera
Also snap camera produced the best images on my old low quality mtk based phone. So i recommend it, its paid but as far i know it have trial version.
I will be happy if someone will tell how is satisfied with this app.
PS.: FV-5 is worse, for my eyes.
in the play store info, there is setting for ISO. but why is there non when i check in setting...?
ive taken some kick ass photos in good light/ low light / bad light with the stock app. IDK what everyone is on about. but to each their own =)

In Auto mode or Manual?
Both.
Basically, when you unlock your boot loader, the great photo quality will be gone. If you have backed up your "TRIMM area" before unlocking it (where the DRM keys are stored), then you'll be able to get it back, by re-locking the BL, but this means you'll lose your ability to use costom ROMs, only modified stock ROMs are possible after that.
The reason for this is that Sony uses some pretty amazing software magic to get great pictures in low light (noise reduction algorithms) which aren't meant to be accessible for others to reverse engineer, so they lock them away with the DRM keys. So with a locked boot loader, the camera makes awesome pictures even in low light, with an unlocked BL, meh... (not so much any more)
Of course, these algorithms are only available to the Sony default camera app for the same reasons...
Have you tried this
It will let you have scene's and HDR in 20mp, also it has more ISO options.
I've used FV-5 from the start and imo it's a lot better for me then the stock app. I can't work with the stock app that has limited control
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
stock camera is the only one...'cause of manual iso... fv-5 has good auto but you can't force iso 100, 200 and so on
Recently I have the Z3 Compact therefore not yet tried everything, but the camera does not seem anywhere near what they sold me in reviews. The original camera seems poor choices, the automatic mode leaves much to be desired, especially in low light because when you have a lighthouse in front can not interpret well and properly handle white balance and contrast.
I was testing the Open Camera app and gives me better results than stock. The only thing I use it now for the stock camera is for timeshift and sometimes for panoramic shots.
I have almost forgot about this post, thanks for cleaning my bookmarks.
Thanks for everyone’s reply, I have figured out that another phones also uses that sensor and they make better pics, so probably problem is with sony's software developers who are doing a weak job. I am very addicted to zooming pictures and when I compare zoomed 5mpx downscale shot of lumia 1020 and 8 or 20mpx shot of Z3C, then shot of lumia is sharp and clear, full of details.... the shot of sony is like blurred and without details. So i think that they algorithm is wrong somewhere or they are compressing raw to too low quality and when jpeg is created then its final quality will be even worse regardless of 97% or 100% jpeg quality. Need to note that nokia's sensor is three times bigger in its physical size that captures the light.
But the video quality is epic i have never seen so good video quality from phone.
Currently i am waiting for availability of 5.1.1 in slovakia
