[Q] Slow scrolling on certain UI elements? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched extensively, but I cannot find anything relevant to the Nook.
The app drawer with ADW EX is smooth as silk, and it looks amazing. However, lists such as contacts, the market, or the list of devices offered by CWM are very jerky. Can this be fixed somehow?
CM7 nightly 124, Dalingrin OC kernel 6/30 (200/600/800/1100/1100MHz), and ADW Launcher EX 1.33.
//edit: Typo.

I've noticed the same, but considering how awesome CM7 is on NC I found it a minor annoyance. Still, I'd also love a fix.

I don't have a direct fix but try a different ROM, called MIUI, flash this. It has much better scrolling.

This is a bug that I believe is caused by the theme engine. It has been very hard to track down thus far but I want to take another look into it.

Great to hear. Thanks for the insight, Dal.

Trying to decide on a ROM

CM6.1 or MIUI (probably Rod's).
I do like the look of MIUI but I'd rather have the fastest, most stable setup and one with the greatest functionality.
These are both looking very good indeed these days.
So which one and why?
try them both a decide for yourself that's what its all about...you r just gonna get back and forth comments/bickering asking a question like that in here..try searching next time
Enomther's The Official.
Stock, all sorts of optional features, easiest method ever for enabling apps2ext, and stable
how can u go wrong
You won't get many replies.
WHY?
Everyone will most likely tell you to just try it yourself.
Every ROM in my sig has proven to be stable. I like to try different ones out.
As long as you are rooted, and have a custom recovery installed, nothing is stopping you from doing a nandroid backup and playing with a new ROM.
"fastest, most stable setup and one with the greatest functionality."
That's all up to you. What you may consider "greatest functionality" may be bloat to someone else.
Personally, I really liked MIUI by Rodriquez.

Tried that ROM myself for a couple of days during the week. Love the FM Radio and features. But stable? Meh. I suffered apps closing/crashing unexpectedly throughout the day. Stable it wasn't.
If you want super stable, then GEO's ROM is superb. Only downside is no FM Radio.
Just my personal experience.
why not cm 6 R2 ? (or nightlys)
If you want my personal opinion (other than 'try them out for yourself), MIUI is great because of all of the interface tweaks. The lockscreen is gorgeous, the theming capability is awesome, and the settings UI is awesome.
I've been more than pleased with Kang-o-rama 1.0 b1. It's a build of CM6 RC1 with a handful of graphical niceties and solid Apps2ext functionality. The support the author provides is incredible as well. I try a lot of other ROMs, but that's the one I keep coming back to.
But as the others have said, try them all and make up your own damn mind. What one person loves about a ROM might be another person's pet peeve.

Geo's ROM's are great, I had one for quite a while. I don't know why you're getting issues with Enom's ROM, but it is very very stable. That's the reason people who use it, use it over CM. My uptime on my phone gets up to 100 hours without any force closes or issues, and even then it's me, I'm just flashing something else or changing a feature which requires reboot.
Geo's roms have been light, fast & very stable for me!

Yes, I love Kang-o-rama
Well I tried the MIUI one (Rod's) and it just rebooted on me for no reason today.
Looks like it's CM6.1 next for me.
I was using Geo's then I got a message saying it wanted to do an update, then failed, but I could not get rid of that message.
Perhaps I should have got a Desire as I do like Sense, but the Sense ROM for the N1 was not stable IMO.
I'm using Rod's MIUIMOD 1.9.1(with wildmonks kernel) and never had a single reboot or stability problem.
Also, i've tried Enomther and MicroMOD's(also the Desire SuperHybrid) ROMs, and they were stable for me.
If all were unstable in your case, then maybe you're doing something wrong.
Did you for example wipe three times from recovery before flashing a completely different ROM?
In the past i've also had stability problems when using titanium backup to restore settings, so keep that in mind.
Also, you could try to use different kernel with somewhat higher voltage ( wildmonks for example http://wildmonks.whoisthedrizzle.com/kernel/2.6.35/112610/Custom_Kernels/ ).
Most ROM"s use kernel which are slightly under-volted to increase battery life(1050mv is the default stock kernel voltage if I remember correctly), but some devices don't like the lower voltages.
Should be clear, I never tried the ones you mentioned, it was the NXsense one I tried - it had a few silly little bugs but nothing major, just enough to be somewhat annoying.
Yes I do wipe, and am using the wildmonks kernel now.
I'm using stock MIUI with english pack and in my opinion...is more stable and smoother than CM 6.1... I check out CM rom yesterday and the ADW launcher still sucks..and Launcher Pro haven't adjust very well with some of the new effects and setting that CM have put in...my opinion MIUI stock..(not Rods Rom) with english pack...way better for now...and if you are a Launcher Pro fan...works awesome with MIUI....just my opinion

IMHO:
MIUI, although a great show of design/function ingenuity, is a toy. It's a pretty, flashy toy. It's filled with stuff, and design is confusing. Everything's all over the place, there's too many features (yeah, I know, crazy) and too much stuff going on.
CM6.1, besides being more stable (majority would agree), it's android as google meant it. It's pristine, clean and just looking at it makes u feel confident in its stability. It's simple, yet advanced. Fast, yet reliable.
I definitely recommend CM over MIUI, but, of course, it's all individual prefs.

Why is the theming awesome? I have yet to see a MIUI theme that themed the whole ROM. The ugly dialer, MMS and Contacts app are always left out. Most of the themes are just icons and wallpaper.
As to the UI if it is so great why do most use Launcher Pro with it. To me... JMHO it looks like Windows 3.1 with a splash of color

Yup!
Windows 3.1 with a bunch of apps that look like the team never had a meeting
Definitely enomther's the official.
Tried CM, was ok, a tad unstable at times and I'm not a nightly person. If you want a rom to use for at least a month, don't use something that doesn't have a Final build and has to undergo nightly revisions. I got sick of having to flash CM everytime a nightly comes out.
I dislike MIUI. Enough said. Up to personal preference. Really dislike the iphoney crap.
If you want a somewhat stable sense rom, I recommend Evil's NXSense.
Like most others here have said, you gotta try them out to decide.
I originally tried a bunch of Roms and didn't like all the "bloat". I settled on Geo's rom because it basically is a pre-rooted and ready to go stock rom with some little bonuses.
After a while I tried MIUI's because of the newer UI. I quickly lost interest with the quirky lockscreen, phone, and messaging apps. I used Launcher Pro as I hate the cluttered iPhone desktop. Dialer Oned out the phone from the same lack of dial-by name and quirky facebook intergration. I tried Stock MIUI and Rods (I liked Rods).
Then I settled on CM6.1 which had the nice customizable dropdown menu toggles, taskbar color modifications, and additional features that were available.
Since I've seen the new MIUI theming capabilities but I don't think I'm quite ready to switch from CM's. I use the nightlies now and I'm now using a lot of the tweaks that I know I will ultimately regret on other roms.
But this is the perk of a Nexus. I just download and keep a bunch of roms on my phone's SD card... able to switch to whatever in minutes. Thus don't be afraid to do the same.
Also what I've learned is that no matter what rom you use, once you install Dialer One and Launcher Pro... they all feel the same aside from the little perks one may offer over the other.

[Q] is honeycomb this sluggish on all tegra devices?

so I purchased the transformer after rave reviews online. Unfortunately I'm finding an incredibly sluggish experience akin to my nexus 1 on stock 2.1. I'm at 3.1 and the latest firmware and the thing is almost unusable even after a fresh reboot. The launcher is sluggish and all tasks are jerky and delayed. Anyone have any tips to optimizing. The performance? I thought about an although launcher but that seems. Like it SHOULD be unnecessary on hardware like this....
My nexus on cm7 with go launcher is smooth as butter... any ideas? Any known issues?
So on a stock rom it feels like... a stock rom? Give it time. As honeycomb matures and more custom roms with optimizations come out it will definitely get better. The one complaint I have right now is choppy flash video which apparently does not affect other devices (even with equal hardware).
Basically, Asus needs to implement some fixes (like Flash) then get the source code into the hands of devs around here and we will be sorted. Honestly though, it's really not bad as it is. I'm loving it!

Yes there are several if you read here and elsewhere, but nothing like you're describing AFAIK.

To me the default launcher on Asus is very sluggish even when 3.1 came out. I recommend get ADW Launcher Pro. Been using it from day one. Its also sluggish with the Samsung 10.1
I got mine yesterday, TBH I'm also little disappointed with the overall performance given its’ hardware spec. But its NOT extremely laggy a you describe. Early builds of most Android ROMs are like this. I experienced similar issues with my Galaxy S when I first got it, but with time things improved a lot. So I am anxiously waiting for Asus to come up with better ROMs (fixing Flash performance and overall laggyness of the browser and launcher).
@OP, there are plenty of youtube videos showing general performance; go through them and see if you experience anything out of the ordinary.
I haven't noticed the sluggishness myself. There have been a couple hiccups during periods of high load, thats about it.
I did turn Animations to "Some" though...
No slugishness for me. Even before 3.1 I didn't notice any. The animations could be set to be faster sometimes but thats about it. No jerkiness for sure.
++ there's something wrong with your Transformer.
I wouldn't describe the launcher as 'super smooth' but it's not 'almost unusable' by any stretch.
I have an HTC Incredible (almost identical hardware to the Nexus One) running CyanogenMod 7.03 (Android 2.3) and the Transformer is faster without a doubt.
The first thing you should try is a factory reset.

If any of you are deciding what mod to use..

Just my two cents, but I would strongly advise using Cassie's XtraLiteRom KKA ThunderBolted in the development forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365587
I've used Sheep ROM, e.t.c.. and none of them are as fast, stable, or complete as this ROM. It is absolutely awesome. I'll leave the rest up to you, but I figured I would help some of you by pointing towards this ROM.
Give it a go and you won't look back, just make sure you follow the installation process set out!
EDIT: Correction: I meant to say ROM and not MOD in the title - that's what happens if you play too much Skyrim! ''If any of you are deciding what ROM to use..''
How is this one with multitasking? I've played around with Supercharged script on my own and I loved it except it kept closing the apps I was using the moment i put them in the background. Kinda annoying, could you do a quick check (preferably with something CPU/RAM intensive like 3D game or browser with many tabs)??? I'd be really grateful, I'm too lazy to flash a ROM just to get disappointed...
Well, so far so good. Seems perfect.
An issue I've had with other ROM's, is that it always lags in the browser, so far this one doesn't. Over all it feels nippier and smoother, all I can say is try it and see what you think
is that the stock browser, or other browsers?
can you run a test with
- 3rd party browsers (dolphin, miren)
- 3rd party dialers (rocketdial, for eg)
- go launcher ex
would appreciate it if you could give the results, thanks!

[Q] Why are the stock-based ROMs graphically smoother than CM7.2 on Defy+?

There's a constant struggle in my mind. I have tried several CM7 builds, but all of it had problems with the GUI smoothness. I just could not reach that iPhone-like smooth operation like the stock ROM or MS2Ginger, not even with V6 SuperCharger and Nitro Lag Nullifier. Various scrolling cache settings and build.prop tweaks also did not help like playing with debug.performance.tuning, video.accelerate.hw, debug.sf.hw. But MS2Ginger has several problems CM don't: SD card corruption (can't be fixed with mmcfix, tried), random FCs. So I just can't decide which is better for me: choppy GUI with no SD problems or ultrasmooth GUI with rage sometimes. It would be good to combine smoothness with SD card fix.
I'm not quite familiar with Android development yet, but I would like to know what modules/drivers/binaries etc. are responsible for this GUI smoothness/choppyness, and is there a way to port these things from stock ROM into CM.
Are you using ADWLauncher (which is the stock one in cm7)?
Try to use another launcher such as launcherpro, go launcher or adw launcher ex (not free).
I don't know why, but adw is very choppy indeed... it works well on lg p350 (cheap android device) of a friend of mine though.

How do you do actual development inside a forum post? That doesn't even seem possible.
But anyways yeah, I installed CM7 a few days ago and had the exact same issue as the OP—replacing ADWLauncher with Launcher Pro solved it.

Launcher Pro is choppy too. My first task after installing CM is always to replace ADW with Launcher Pro, but LP is still smoother on stock/MS2Ginger than on CM7.
So any tips? It's not a launcher problem, but an overall system symptom. Anyone experienced it?
i'm using adw lancher ex on cm7.2 with supercharged and it's really smooth.. like you said, iphone-like!

Do you have Defy+? What is your kernel version? What is your base SBF? What values are set in bootmenu/overclock?
Lots of performance and specially battery tweaks done in CM ROMs at the cost of better graphics. That's the case with every other brand mobile too. They all look graphically smoother on stock but a bit dull on CM.
It's hard to quantify "choppy" and "smooth," and different people will have different interpretations of the terms. Maybe a comparison video would clear things up.
Can some choppyness come from deodexing a rom? I read somewhere that odexed roms (like stock ones) are faster, but I can't remember in which way faster... maybe just booting up faster?!

As you can read in the end of the post, odexed rom is snappier in general!!
I'd want to try an odexed CM7.2
That would be fast as he'll :-D

How reputable is this poster? FWIR, deodexing only affects boot times, and only after a Dalvik cache wipe—there shouldn't be any performance impact besides that.
in my case, i have a defy+ with adw ex, old v6 (update8) is very smooth. launcherpro is too. stock launcher is sucks, so i dont use it. but other launchers works fine for me.

[Q] Poor image quality in CM7 (Possibly 12 or 16 bit?)

So I recently downgraded to CM7 just because I wanted something more stable than the ICS/JB ROMs I'd been using. First thing I noticed is the horrible image quality throughout the system; stuff like gradients and the overscroll effect look like bad JPEGs.
The only thing I could think of was to enable 16-bit transparency in the CM settings and edit the build.prop to force GPU rendering, but neither of those did anything.
Anyone know what I could do to fix this or do I just need a better ROM?
Thanks in advance.

Understand that the CM roms are run through with a fine tooth comb before they are released ass a stable mod.
Try a diffrent launcher and see if that is still the case .

I definitely understand that. I was running CM10.1 for a while and it was the most stable (albeit unofficial) JB rom I'd had on here so far, so that's why I decided to switch to an official release - and everything's great, aside from the poor quality on gradients.

I noticed it from the beginning on ADW launcher and have since tried out ADW EX, Next Launcher, Smart Launcher, GO Launcher and a few more with no luck.

When i use to run cm7 on thee mytouch 3g there was a surface dithering option maybe that can help tho i did not see the diffrence.Do you have the inferrrior mt4g screen?
try one of thier nightly builds and if that is no diffrent then that is just how cm7 looks.

I've tried with and without surface dithering, still didn't make a difference. I remember looking when I first got this phone and it turned out that I got the good screen, plus I've flashed like 20 different ROMs and the graphics are always great. I actually just downloaded the latest nightly, so I'll give that a try.
Welp, flashing the latest nightly didn't help. I guess I'll just switch to a better ROM -_-
You might have luck by changing dpi.
