[Q] HTC Sensation? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello. So yesterday I went into Tmobile and found out I was eligible for an upgrade. I ended up upgrading my girlfriends old TP2 and keeping my HD2. I know I am missing some processing power and a front facing camera but correct me if i am wrong not much else? I actually like the shape of the Hd2 better. Anyway I have been running Rafdroid on my phone and like the sense 3.0. I would like to go to a ROM that is closest to what the Sensation is running. I am actually getting a new HD2 shipped as the old one's usb port had lifted off the board and the Tmobile guy said he could get it replaced. So I will be starting form scratch. Looks like a new HD dev tool has been released automating Magldr and CLK installation?

yes, but to install clk, you must have the drivers installed on your phone ( really easy to do )

Just so you know there is a Android ROM for the HD2 that was ported from the HTC Sensation. It is "imilka's Sensation Sense v0.1".
And yes XDA member ksubedi made the HD2 NAND Toolkit. This is a all in one toolkit that flashes vertually anything to the HD2. And it makes flashing cLK and then CWM after that to be able to install a ROM very simple.

There are a number of Sense 3 ROMs available but none that are really acceptable for day to day use. They tend to be very sluggish and buggy. I've settled for a nice cmylxgo Sense 2 ROM from the DesireHD till Sense 3 ROMs are ironed out.

Hey there,
I am about the same way.. i could get the Sensation if i wanted but heck when i get basically get it working on my HD2 why change. Every one of the Sense 3 Roms right now at least have a bit of a Graphical Glitch. Meaning that there are horizonal lines that show from time to time but heck its not that bad at all untill they get all the data to be able to get a fully working ROM. Heck here is the rom i have been using and its a HTC Kingdom 3D Rom ( aka the EVO 3D ) which is basically the same thing ROM wise. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075703
Personally I have been using this as a Daily User and I am loving it. Just like with about any other rom you have to give it a day or so to settle in ( more so with the Sense 3 roms ) but after clearing the battery stats i have no real issues. Data works fine and the WIFI the same.. Im getting a solid 30+ hours of usage with basic calling and browsing the web. I dont like do a bunch of You Tube video watching or streaming radio but heck any phone you expect for it to use a bunch of battery just from the mb usage. For one min of streaming audio or video it uses roughly 1 MB of data. But oh well.. Take a look at this rom and see how you like it.. Its working well for me. Hope some of this helps..

I would check this link if your interested in a good sense 3.0 Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112810
.
This Rom has gotten better and better and with his new 1.5 update about to come out it should fix a lot of the buggy problems that sense 3.0 has had

[Q] What does Android run like on HD2

Hi Guys I am after some answers:-
I was interested in the HTC Desire HD and did not realise that the HD2 could dual boot so run WM6.5 and Android and from what I have read Android runs off the SD card so I have a few questions:-
1) How does Android run pretty much flawless....slow...buggy and only 720p recording doesn't work everything else does?
2) Anyone have a Desire, Desire HD and HD2 for comparison ?
3) What ROM is most like the desire HD I like the interface on that.
4) Can you sync outlook calender with HD2 Android ?
I am no stranger to flashing I have always had windows phones and flashed custom cooked roms and spl's so from what I have read up I will be ok to set this up myself.
thanks in advance.
It's not very stable yet but you can live with it if you don't mind a few battery pulls a day.
Thanks for the response so you would say that if I want a stable/smooth Android then go for the Desire HD or Galaxy S ?
I am on contract with T-Mobile at the moment and the Desire HD is out of stock and they can't tell me when it will come back into stock they have stock of the Galaxy which I here is due a Froyo 2.2 upgrade soon so the HD2 would have been the best of both worlds for me having WM and Android.
If you want pretty stable android, get native Android phones. If you want to have fun and have the choose to dual boot into Android,wm7, and megoo, get the Hd2. As far I'm aware, Android runs pretty damn nice on this babe. No major issues what so ever..

If you mainly want android and want it stable, go with the android phone. I'd wait for the desire HD if I were you. A 4.3 inch screen is great to have. But if you think you actually want winmo and will actually use it, then you might want to look at the hd2. Android runs decently on the hd2 ... its good for a port, but it will probably never be as stable as a native android phone. It takes a lot of work, research, and trial & error to tweak the hd2 to get android running well, but most people can get it running pretty well with some work.
If I were you, I would wait for the desire HD... it has the most ram, a big screen like the hd2, but with newer hardware and better multitouch than the hd2.

Not very stable? A few battery pulls a day? Complete bull**** if you have a somewhat recent build & kernel. There are some minor issues left, but Android on HD2 is certainly usable on a daily basis. If however you have the cash (and are willing to pay) then of course the HD will provide a (slightly) better Android experience, since it's native.
Thanks Atoore, well I really want it for the app store, games etc so I take it that works fine ? and to have best of both worlds really windows and android.
Can you get Wm7 on the HD2 already ? thats anther bonus !
I just got text saying my Desire HD will be with me in a few days but my plan was to sell it BNIB on ebay then pick up a HD for probably half the price for a very similar phone !
Anyone got any views on this ? who has gone Desire to Hd2 or HD2 to Desire ?
Thanks again guys.

Thanks Stephen what build are you running or would recomend ?
I saw a guide someone wrote back in july for best wm6.5.3 and android but no doubt there has been great progress since then ?
I am running Mdeejay_FroYo_Sense_v._2.3_Clean for a while now (5 days) and have no issues whatsoever. (battery life remains bad though)
I have been using Android on the HD2 for about 3 weeks now. I had some issue in the first couple of days until I found a good ROM that just works. but after that, I can't really say I have anything to complain about!
The device used to hang a little in the first few days, but the cause was mainly some of the apps I used.
I did not really use WM since I got Android running on my HD2. it's certainly much nicer experience!
I have been using this ROM for quiet some time now with minimal issues
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780525
If you have custom ROM on your HD2, then all you need is make sure that this ROM supports Android (most of them do), then download the files to your device and run Android... that's it.
As for outlook calendar, AFAIK, you can sync it with Google calendar, then this will be synced to your device (you need Google account to set up your HD2)
I would say, go for it and give it a try, it's very different from WM
My honest opinion is its more the fun in it, initially I had battery pulls and screens of death but know that I have my radio right and rom right, and honestly the only reason I've shut it down was due to dead battery or replacing the kernel, from what I've heard the battery life in the desire be isn't great, neither is android on the hd2, but its drastically cheaper and its a learning experience.... do it

I am in the same boat as OP.
From what I have read, ROMs like Froyostone are totally solid.
People are claiming that it runs totally fine, with almost no issues at all.
I'm thinking of buying an HD2 just to run Android as my daily phone.
Would you not recommend this? I know the older roms were buggy, but from what i read it runs as good as a Desire (original).
Are people bullsh*tting? or is it really that good now?
I recently bought a HD2 just to run android.
Ive been using android on it for a few days and I gotta say its pretty good. Its not perfect, you do get some freeze ups, though they only last for a few seconds. Ive had some data drops, since then Ive installed the fix and it seems to be working fine now.
I know Id rather have the HD2 than the desire, the big screen is awesome.

As already mentioned: That's just completly bull****.
I'm running and upgrading my AndroidHD2 every few weeks since this summer and the first FroyoStone releases and pretty much all builds have become totally perfect, especially the desire builds.
I was running MDJ FroYo Sense Revolution v.1.6 until 1.7 was released this week and got freaking 3 days and 21 hours of battery life, that's almost a 400%+ compared to the days I was running WinMo 6.5.
If you're having fun to do stuff with your phone, tweaking it, installing new things and so on go for HD2, since its at 400$ atm I think.
If you just want a working phone and don't want to care about such stuff get the Desire HD oder whatever you like.

There is no best combo, people get all kinds of different results even with the same setup. It's probably due to different SD cards, not too sure on that though. It's going to take you a few days to figure out what's good for you, but once you have your WinMo build and Radio good, probably every Android build will run just fine, leaving stuff up to your own taste. Coming from an HTC Magic, I really liked Cyanogenmod so I'm running all kinds of CM-based roms (currently JDMS 1.5, it's the most recent one). If you like Sense, MDJ's builds are probably your best shot.
But again, there's no guide on what is best. If you feel like experimenting a bit, you're gonna have a good time, but if you want a 'no hassle' phone go for the Desire (HD). I bought my HD2 especially for Android btw, found it for about €250 on ebay (unlocked), while a desire would be at least 400 for inferior hardware.
So its totally sweet then.
Wicked.
It's a great deal, especially as the desire has battery life issues, I don't see the advantage ?

There's a reason HD2 prices on ebay have started increasing recently (at least in the UK) and it's because news is spreading about what can be done on it and what is in the pipeline. I only use Android on my HD2 and have done for two months now, Only reason I know what WinMo Rom I've got on my phone is cos it's listed in my sig lol.
Recent builds have gotten so stable I can't remember the last time I had an app crash on me, the market is flawless, I get very few data drops (and they don't last long either), camera is as good as under WinMo (5MP in other words) and very few other niggles. The main thing some peoples complain about is battery life, but that's only because they don't calibrate the battery properly (have your battery at 100% when you install a build and it will be fine tho).
I wanted a new Android phone but couldn't really afford a Vibrant, etc.
I decided to get the HD2, and I do not regret it. I use one of Darkstone's rom, and I've never had major issues with it.
I had some battery life issues, so I changed toHastarin's 8.2 kernel with Overclocking and Undervolting, and that solved my battery problem. I could get 2 days of light use if I wanted to, but I always use it a lot. With normal use I usually have 30-40% battery at the end of the day. With heavy use, I sometimes have to plug it in after about 12 hours of use, but that's rare.

i have to agree with the other posters, that is bull. i use mccm build and i never had the need to pull the battery. if hd2 is far cheaper than desire hd and you prefer to save some money, i'd strongly consider hd2.
Im complety newbie in the android stuff....
first i buy HD2 only from WinMo...
but after i found so many fantastic build in XDA, im using android as daily for about a month now...
sure, it takes little bit working n searching.....
but for me, thats the beauty of it....
For now, i already found a couple build that i thought perfect enough, no lag or whatsoever....
but i still keep trying the other builds, just to see the difference...
sorry for my bad english........

Coming from Android.. how stable is it on HD2?

I have a Motorola Milestone and am intersted in an HD2. A few people around my area are selling them that run android but I want to know if android is running smoothly and is stable on this device. Is it ok for everyday use without messing around with it very much?
It would be to replace my milestone, which is an android device, so I'm wondering if the HD2 runs as smoothly as an actual android device
Thanks!
With NAND recently released for the HD2, I'd say very stable.
If I were you though, I'd rather buy a stock HD2 rather than an "android ready" HD2 just because of personal preference of builds. Buy a HD2, read the forums and look for a build that'll suit you. For me, iamgpc's gingerbread rom is good enough for me and I'm waiting for a official release of WP7
Well I could still just search around and do a wipe and flash of a build that I like right? (even if its android loaded)

WP& Rom is ALREADY offically released. Its simply that it hasnt been directly released on XDA for various reasons.
Just because it hasnt been posted by cotulla doesnt mean it hasnt "officially" been released.

Android works Great on the HD2 If you can get one cheep (under $200) get it and yes you can change android any time + if the HD2 already has Android it most likely has already had HSPL 2.08 and the Radio updated so thats less for you to have to learn how to do
Hi :-D
I have a motorola milestone (and develop for it ) and now a brand new HD2, and must say, WM lasted for about 35 seconds LOL
Now I have NAND desreHD build, and (without overclock but with memory optimization and tweaks) is butterly smooth!
Like and maybe more than Milestone...
With a senseless rom is far superior to a milestone (stockspeed) and like same smoothnes with [email protected] with MUCH more memory
As the others said, it is very stable now with NAND, and apparently now you can dual boot WP7 and Android off you SD cards. There are just plain SO MANY OPTIONS on this phone, so you will make a good move going. Plus you can hop back and forth to sense/non-sense with relative ease, especially with clockwork...
I bought my HD2 when launched. I now have NAND Android on it. I'm happy with it... BUT
If you want to buy and HD2 to put Android... why don't you buy a Desire HD instead? I was not able to compare both of them but I imagine that if hardware and OS are developped to go together it has to be better (faster boot, all working, stability) and after a while you will find custom Android ROM for it (maybe yet available).
If I have to buy something today, between HD2, HD7 and DHD... I will go for DHD. The hardware seems the best (8Mp camera, newer proc, more NAND).
Of course, all this depend at what price you'll find each device.
personally i will choose the HD2 because you can run android on it..HD2..HD7..evo there are the same phones..just one has a 8MP camera and a front camera but that is about it..I used to own a touch pro 2 unlocked version and I barely used the front camera..it was useless for me. So HD2 FTW.
Sent from unknown by XDA App
DHD has a front camera? I didn't even know this...
I just read that the DHD boot in 2sec; Is this real? If it is it could be very nice for me, I would like to know also if the A-GPS is working fine (I'm mean that data is written in the chip itself same as WM6 does on HD2).
But anyway, all this is subjective. I had a HD2 and I'm very happy with it. It's a really good device.
And second anyway... all this was not the initial subject... sorry for thread pollution
Yes, Android is stable on HD2 and it can be the main OS.

[Q] Worth upgrading to?

I used to have a touch pro 2 but my screen died from a fall. Now I'm using a slow G1, and miss my touch pro 2. I can land a used HD2 in mint condition from 150 to 200. Would it be worth it? I'd also be most likely using android on it.
100% Yes.
For your money you will basically get a HD2,HD7 and a DesireHD, all basically same spec and you get choice of all 3 OS's aswell as ubuntu/meego etc.
The HD2 is was way ahead of its time in specs and still stands up their with the newer phones today so if you want a great and versatile phone for good price get a HD2 and have allot of fun trying all the different OS's/ROMs etc

The HD2 is most deffenitly worth buying. If yout liked Win Mo on your Touch Pro then you will really enjoy the HD2.
Okay last question..
Is android on it good / stable enough for it for daily use if Win Mo doesn't satisfy me anymore? Cause I know WP7 still has a few kinks on it, but i'm curious on how android will run it such as battery life wise and stability. Will it last me a full day and what not.

Yes Andriod run great on the HD2. I run mine from SD card cause I love being able to choose wich one I want Win Mo or Andriod. The SD card builds are for the most part great but some require you to manually set up your APN whilel in Andriod to get a data connection astablished and most of all of them still have data drop problems but nothing that toggling airplane mode on and off will not cure. Also each build has it's on one or two things that are still not functioning right but nothing really that will hender day to day use. Things like the led not working for messages and missed calls and the camera not being as good of a quilty as in Win Mo these problems are being slowly worked out though.
I have not tryied a NAND Andriod ROM yet so I can not speak from personal experience. The people that I have read post from here on XDA and in the T-Mobile fourms is all good. They say e erverything works in the NAND builds. They also say they are lightning fast. There is some talk of the NAND Andriod ROMs putting a little more stress on the mainboard and screen but nothing comfimed yet.

Sounds good to me. Gonna do a little more research on nandroid and probably choose from there. It looks like i'm most likely gonna go on to the HD2. It's such a beast of a device with all the different options you have, and I love it. I love tinkering with my phone all the time and just messing with it in general.

Well the HD2 is deffinitly a phone you would like cause there is no other ohone out tbere that you can tinker/tweek as much as the HD2. Buf make sure to read therowly about any process, procidure, or tweek you want to preform to it before you do it.
What kind of HD2 are you looking at buying. Is it a european HD2 or a T-Mobile HD2?
just a quick add on to this. i used to have a touch pro 2 as well till it got stolen...good thing i had property and contents insurance. but anyway, once you get the hd2 the first thing you "might" miss is the physical keyboard and/or the stylus. for me it took about a week or so to adjust when i got my hd2. but you'll get the hang of it and pretty soon you're good to go. you might consider getting a bigger keyboard application though (one in android or wm6.5).
android is smooth on my hd2 and i am using it daily
however, winmo 6.5 sometimes give me hiccups.

Good Bye, HD2

Sorry to create a new thread, this is my last one in HD2 Section.
I am happy with my hd2 from the last 11months and in last 6 months I am habituated to test builds and even tried to make builds on my own but ofcourse failed. Usually, I won't stick with a mobile for more than 3 months.
But this Mobile has different OS and it was a powerful one. Now I am fed up with testing Android builds and their stability, battery etc. So I want to use a native Android phone and so I am going to purchase DesireHD with a stock Android rom and I need to concentrate on my studies other than concentrating on XDA and my mobile.
Thanks for all the Developers in HD2 section, especially Cotulla for Android and WP7 on our HD2, Mdeejay but we're missing him a lot , hope he will be back soon and finally Imilka who is currently replacing the work of Mdeejay.
Bye!

And do you know why they are slower compared to the HD2? Cuz the stock rom hasn't been tweaked to their fullest... While for the HD2, we have our custom roms roms tweaked to the fullest for maximum user satisfaction.
Now when a true android device is flashed with a custom rom, it is also, or atleast should be, tweaked to the fullest. And when that device is on its custom rom, it flies well beyond where our HD2's stopped and fell.
Now i'm not saying our HD2's aren't great for android, heck it is. But people, don't get ahead of yourself and start thinking it's as good or even better than a true 1ghz android device, heck the desire z, at it's 800mhz is better.
My mytouch 4g has more ram, therefore less lag. But I still bought an hd2. Simply for a 4.3" android device on tmous

+1... completely agree there. A lot of people here didn't seem to understand that when they were always posting how the HD2 is faster than native devices... they were comparing a rooted, tweaked device to an unrooted, stock device, and thought it was a fair comparison. And many acted like other phones didn't have their own forums with custom roms and tweaks, and ports of other android phones.
If I just used Android, I would definitely love to get a native phone... but since I've been dualbooting WP7 and Android, I am going to have a very hard time deciding what new phone to get. Right now, Android is definitely capable of more, but seeing what's in store for WP7, and seeing how quickly the homebrew community is taking apart WP7 and learning to tweak and hack it, I know WP7 will catch up quick. I wouldn't be able to decide between to 2... I actually kinda prefer using WP7 as my day to day OS, but there are still too many limitations to completely stick with wp7. I can't play my psx or snes games on wp7, there's no good navigation, and many other things that are missing still. I also love being able to customize my android homescreens. So at this point I like them both about equally, and use them both about the same amount... so I'm gonna be sticking with my HD2 for a while longer... probably at least until the end of the year and I can see where each OS is at and see what hardware is available then. I'm really hoping that they start porting android to WP7 devices, so hopefully I can get a next generation device at some point that can run both OS's again... but it will probablt be a long time, if ever, that we see a device that gets modded and hacked like the HD2 did. The HD2 was a very unique device... there was never a phone that got modded as much and probably never will be again, unfortunately.
Kind of feel the same way I love testing out different Roms for the HD2 and love the screen size but I want to play around with a Native Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S 4G) to see whats its all about plus it would be nice to finally be able to charge a phone while its turned off. Im stilling going to keep my HD2 though I still feel like its one of the top phones out.

dont be in any hurry. you really are not missing much. those samsung android phones do have an amazing screen though. just saying that if you are going to upgrade, make sure whatever you are getting is a worthy upgrade. flashing these custom roms and trying to find the "perfect" and "flawless" android build for our hd2's can be annoying at times but its doable..
but i guarantee, like most of us you want the most out of your device and you will end up rooting and flash custom roms on your new android smartphone just like you do now. and like many, you will also run into problems and those custom roms will always not be the most stable... just like some of these android roms for the hd2...
if you are on tmobile i would try to wait it out. see what the pyramid is all about and what other android smartphone will come out for tmo. the build quality alone makes the hd2 on a different level than most smartphones out there.

Bye!

I am using Imilka's glacier sense 1.3 from the last 25 days exactly from Feb3. I don't find any other build stable and better than this with sense even colourful. Thank you! I will try

This is truely an amazing phone, intending to keep it till the end of the year, then going for the pyramid probably, or another smartphone with Android.
But ye, again, great phone.
Got my new DesireHD, rooted and now its with Gingerbread sense 2.1
Pretty happy in upgrading from HD2
I can see a lot difference in performance on DesireHD
Very Thankful to all the Android developers.

Yeah man i wanna do that also someday, not now No Budget!
However, we can charge our phone when they are OFF with Magldr 1.11!
Last week my battery died so i freaked out hearing/reading that it wont charge etc... I plugged it for about 4 or 5 hrs and then i switched it on and SURPRISE!! It booted and had 60% battery!
Only minor issue is that you will have to unplug-replug the battery!
i think it is about 6-7 monthes before the hd2 forum is empty like all old phones , but it was the best phone i've ever had , and won't upgrade untill a similar htc phone is released , The only thing i'll be sad about is you xda developrs and hd2 community , we will be distributed among different phons and forums

HD2 (android) vs G2, comparable?

I currently own a G2, and I'm planning on getting the Sensation when it is released, but in the mean time I really want a 4.3 inch screen phone, because I haven't used the keyboard on my G2 since I got Swiftkey. My question today is, does anyone have any valid reasons why I should hold on to the G2? I'm currently the latest MIUI and overclocked to 1.5GHZ, and it's my understanding that MIUI runs pretty smoothly on the HD2. So is it worth it? or should I just stick it out until the Sensation comes out.
If you are into phone hacking then yes you will love it. I run Android from NAND using cLK for my bootloader and it is great. If I was to show it to someone right now that did not know the HD2 was originally a Windows Mobile device would think it came with Android as you don't see the bootloader boot up using cLK, but you do using MAGLDR.
Just make sure you get a good HD2and don't let someone pull a fast one on you and sell you a defective HD2. There has been a few people on here that that has happen to. So testy the phone if at all possible befor buying it or request a video of the phone in operation if buying it on line.

Well...
I have both HD2 and Desire Z (G2). I rarely use its keyboard either.
If you like to tweak, hack or try custom ROM, it worths having HD2 before move into Sensation. You can flash many type of ROM, not only Android, you can also flash WP7.
Cheers

What would be your advice on not getting duped? How do I make sure it's a good HD2?

Well like I said if you are buying it from somewhere non the internet. I would request they make a video of the HD2 being used to place a call, scrolling through the start menu, opening and closing apps, taking a picture and video, turning off then back on and booted into bootloader. A video like this would only take like five minutes.
If you are buying from a individual that you are going to meet face to face. Then do all of the same things as I mentioned above with the HD2 bbefore forking over the cash.
... and remember to check the proximity sensor. my mate got a nice lemon with ps not working at all and it's freezing and crashing quite often too.
Unless you are suffering from obsessive flashing disorder, then this phone might put you at ease. However, if you only want something that works. then I'd suggest you stay away. There's no functionality difference between the phones really, just performance at most.
If you are waiting on the Sensation then I would see no need to drop the G2 for an HD2. Less than a month away most likely for the Sensation. I've been waiting on the SGSII and during that wait my Mytouch died (what a little trooper he was) so I picked up a used HD2. ROM beast! Once the SGSII comes out for TMOUS (I hope!) I'll get that and use the HD2 to run Ubuntu.
Only get an HD2 if you play on still playing with it after you get your Sensation.
