Ok, made a slight error on my end. I was having gallery issues and clearing the cache did nothing. I moved some files via Root Explorer instead of thru the gallery so the thumbnails are messed or whatever. Tried clearing the cache no dice. Tried to force it to rescan files, no dice. Said, ok i have solved this before by removing the gallery, and re installing it. So i copied the MediaGallery.apk file to my SD card and used Titanium Backup to uninstall the gallery.
Now i can't re install it. It keeps failing the reinstall. I have tried doing it from the SD card with Root Explorer, i have tried copying it to the /system/app/ folder and still no dice. Still fails install. Have it set to RW, nothing.
How do i go about re installing this app and the odex for it? I was stupid and didn't copy the odex. Yes i know, stupid. I have re-installed it before. I don't think i did anything different. I even changed all it's permissions to everything can be done(checked everything off), just in case it was that. Still nothing
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yes i know i did somehting very dumb, feel free to remind me, but only if you can offer some sound advice first.
Why don't you just try the 3d gallery?
my only issue there is what happens when an OS or software update comes up? I would brick my phone because i lost a critical file that is needed for the update. Not a good thing.
I think i might just use Titanium backup to backup all my apps and such, make sure all my normal app settings are backed up too, then just do a factory reset. I read elsewhere that the reset would put the gallery back, in some other thread, i just am worried about how long it would take to put everything back the way it was. I will keep dicking around today trying to get it to install and if i can't figure it out by the time i wake up tonight (work third shift) then i will just wipe and reload.
Flash this, kind sir.

One...You are awesome. Thank you very much.
two...how do i "flash" it? Just install the APK or do i need to move the META-INF files too? Or do i just execute the zip file in something like Root Explorer?
Sorry, never done OS flashes either.

You have to use the "Install zip from SD card" option in ClockworkMod Recovery.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
In case that wasn't clear enough...
You can either download "Droid X Bootstrap" from the market (It's like $2, I think)
Or you can download "Rom Manager" (the free version works).
If you downloaded Droid X Bootstrap...
Open it up and click "Bootstrap Recovery"
When an "ok" dialog pops up...click "Reboot Recovery."
You'll now be in Clockwork.
_____________________
If you download "Rom Manager" there will be an option to install bootstrap.
Simply do that...
Power your phone off...
And hold the VolumeDown+Power buttons until you boot into clockwork.

From clockwork:
Choose install zip.
Choose zip from sdcard.
Find the .zip
Click yes.
Click Reboot.
Awesome, thank you all very much. I already had the bootstrapper program and ROM manager, i wanted to get into flashing ROMs but never got around to it. LOL
Just flashed it and it doesn't show in the app drawer, but i can find it in /system/apps/ with the proper app permissions. But still no dice on the app drawer. I Rebooted twice more and reinstalled it each time, with no success. It has no Odex file with it in the /system/app/ directory. Should it?
Thank you all again very much for your help

Thank you SOOOO Much.
Got the gallery to show up, occasionally. LOL Every other reset it dissappears, but if i reboot again, it reappears. Neither the original or 3d work, still won't see any files on the SD Card. Whatever, i got it to show, can worry about using stock gallery later. Everything else can read it fine. Still need to figure out how to get it to stick permanently so i don't lose every other reboot. Never had this happen. I can even check titanium backup and it wont be listed in the apps installed on times it isn't in the app drawer. But the times it is in the app drawer i can find it in active apps in titanium backup...
hey all iv noticed this a lot with the stock 2.2 rom on my POV Mobii tegra 2 (advent vega rebrand).
e.g i uninstalled a game called jelly defence, then tried to install an updated version of it. the install fails saying aplication not installed.
ok so i then tried to reinstall the first version i had working on the tablet, and that also fails to install saying again application not installed..
why would this be happening? iv noticed that it happens on a fair few number of apps that i install, then uninstall, then try to install again and they fail to install.
installation is done via apk file from sd card. even tried over wifi and still same error.
I know this might sound rude, but did you try Google?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4226132/application-not-installed-error-on-android
ahh, could be something to do with the certificates or the AndroidManifest.xml file.
where is this file located so that i can check its permissions?
This might be a tough nutt to crack...
"AndroidManifest.xml" file is inside .apk files.
ok i managed to fix the problem. i mounted my sd card to the pc with card reader, and in the android.secure folder there was a file called smdl2tmp1.asec , i deleted that and now the app installs fine. got both jelly defence and few others installed with no issues.
strange how i cant see that folder on the tablet itself because its hidden. need an app to see the folder and its contents directly on the tablet so i can delete it again if needed.
Yeah, folders and files with a dot infront of their names are invisible.
It's a Linux thing!
Glad you got that sorted out!
is there no file manager app that can see these files directly on the tablet?
Just tried "iFileManager" app I got with stock tablet software and it can see hidden files/folders.
I also tried Root Explorer and it can see hidden files/folders, but this is a paid app.
Astro File Manager can also see hidden files/folders, but you need to go into Preferences-->Look and Feel-->and enable "Show Hidden Files" option.
Maybe your current file manager app also has such an option?
Hope I helped, and don't forget to give a thanks!
ahh, i have stock ifilemanager, but i dont use it, i use ES File Explorer since i can access my LAN shares with it easily over the wifi. will give ifilemanager a go in few mins time.
thanks again.
just checked ifilemanager can see the folder but it cant see any of the file which are inside the folder.
Just checked some "hidden" folders myself on my tablet.
Some have files / sub-folders inside and some don't.
Not all folders need to have files inside.
but when i check the folder on the pc via sdcard reader, there are files in the folder.
cant see them directly on the tablet, but when connected to pc i can see the files in exact same location.
I did a search, but it yielded no results, so I'll ask it here... I use file Explorer and every now and again it will tell me in the status bar that I'm using this much space on the internal memory and ask to delete recently downloaded files or something to that effect. I tell it no and go on with my day. Today I realised that 7gb have mysteriously gone missing from my download folder inside file Explorer. I have no idea what happened to them. I'm currently running PureNexus with elimentalX kernel. Has anybody else experienced this? I'm wondering if this could be rom, file Explorer, or download manager related. Thanks in advance...
I am having the exact same damn problem as you. and I cannot copy it out of my phone, because it cannot be found in my phone. lol wtf
PS I am on Android N, and this has happened to me multiple times in the past.
Same thing with me. Stock ROM, rooted.
It's weird, the files can be found on the phone but not while trying to transfer files to PC.
There was a known bug since Android I-don't-know where whenever there is a new folder/file created, commonly in the Downloads folder, Java wasn't reloading that folder so it was stuck to the last time the folder was reloaded, long story-short, it stays as it is until you reload the code.
Try clearing Media Storage cache and then reboot. That got mine fixed.
Hello to all,
I found this annoying problem for a few weeks when I open the .apk files directly from notifications instead of starting the installation of the app, the same file is opened by the "File Manager" as a .zip preventing me from installing the app but permettondomi in vain to check the contents. Initially this did not happen, but he walked directly installation. I checked if the manager appeared as the default app but it is not nothing. Does anyone have advice on how can I bring everything to the initial situation? It could be a default of the last update (VNS-L31C55B150)?
Hello.
I think that if you long click the APK in the Notification Bar it will take you to the exact place in Settings where you can change the default opening Program.
If that fails, try to Reset your app-preferences. Have you changed/flashed/installed anything prior to the problem ?
I do not remember but maybe Precise And coincided with the upgrade of system
I have just had the same issue as you, yet when downloading the apk from a different source worked for me. I don't really know why it gets detected as just a .zip archive rather than a apk. Have you tried other sources or renaming/repacking the apk ?
Solve looking for the apk file you downloaded, and opening it with the file manager, but I do so in more steps
Hi all,
I can't seem to get my obb folder to behave. After installing anything which makes a file inside it, the folder changes to a file inside any file manager including with root access.
In twrp it shows as a normal folder and can be deleted or edited, but once back in android, it reverts to this weird uneditable file...
Any clues? I can't (or rather won't) format internal storage as I don't have a micro SD and currently have lots of files in my root folder which I need in case of emergency (i.e. my twrp backups and some downloaded . zip files).
Any help would be appreciated! It's not an emergency I'm just trying to get a game working. Oh also, if it helps, when I try to download the game after folder has gone weird, play store gets to 99% then fails with error 0 every time.

You simply need to delete the obb folder from TWRP file manager.
If no success, connect your phone to pc and delete ithe folder from there. (or use some force delete software for your platform)

Hi,
I'm also facing same issue, did you find any solution ?
Please help me too..
Don't know if this means anything but if I go into file manager after a reboot it's fine for a minute or two then goes back to being weird. Can't put my finger on what causes it. I've uninstalled magisk, clean flashed my ROM, only thing left to do is format internal storage but can't do that until I get an SD card for my ROM files and backups to go on.

I also had the same issue with pixel experience rom. My Suggestion is to install a nougat based custom rom until someone finds a solution for that.

Thanks but that's not really a solution I want when it worked fine on previous builds.
Wow... You'll never guess...the issue is present in nougat ROMs too...
*facepalm*
i also faced the above problem in almost every oreo rom. But in the below rom it is normal.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/development/rom-cosmic-os-v3-1-universe-t3730547. i am using this rom as daily driver.
Hi All,
I deleted obb folder from going into root >> data >> media >> obb
Choose file manager like es file explorer or Aroma file manager.
But this is temporary solution not permanent after some time same issue will occur again.
Kindly follow this thread to solve obb data lost on Oreo custom Rom.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/how-to/guide-how-to-solve-obb-data-lost-t3744711
Thank you so much!! I don't have an SD card at the moment, however, but happy to know a solution. Does anyone know the cause??
Is there a solution for this without SD card??
EDIT: I've noticed something. The issue described in this thread seems only to happen after connecting to WiFi and downloading apps from the play store. It doesn't seem to happen before I will do that. Hope it helps.

My theory says obb folder turns into file cause system link from data/media/obb should be revoked but I'm not smart enough to know how to create system links
I noticed that when I install the pubg mobile game manually I do not lose the obb folder, just like the friend mentioned above only occurs when the game is installed directly from the play store
For those who don't have rooted devices use this method until we get a fix
