CWM Flashable 1.2 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a flashable zip I can use to get back to B&N 1.2? Preferable one the still keeps root and CWM recovery?

Ok, so what's the real word on the OTA for rooted users?

None of these random workarounds posted in the dev section by random users who just seem to be guessing at things. Is there any word from a real dev working on allowing currently rooted users to install the OTA without un-rooting or flashing things through fastboot? Either by modifying the .zip itself or by creating a method to flash the provided .zip? I'm tired of seeing posts that read along the lines of "Oh, do this in post X then this in post Y and it SHOULD work, but if it doesn't check post Z and hope things work after that."
Download the nandroid backup that was posted. Restore it using Clockwork, then while still in recovery, choose mounts, and then mount /system, then flash the superuser zip from Koush's rooting tutorial, then you will have the OTA stock + rooted + stock recovery + stock boot + everything.
This is how I was able to upgrade.

Yes. You're restoring a nandroid.
Read this post, pretty much you're rerooting again and another step so it doesn't keep going back to stock recovery. Easy.

From the nandroid backup OP:
"Edit: According to xda member Luxferro the new update introduced /etc/install-recovery which may have not been in 2.3, but anyways, it runs this on bootup, and if the MD5 of the recovery doesn't match what is expected, it reflashes the stock recovery back over, so if you dont want the stock recovery to be flashed everytime you boot if your on clockwork or another non stock rom, just rename it to prevent it from running on boot. And for those of you who want to return your phone back to stock this nandroid will do that for you since it also flashes the stock recovery."
Just wipe and flash Paul's Gingerbread ROM.

Pretty much every time you flash an OTA update you're gonna lose root.
If someone took the time to modify the OTA update so you don't lose root, then it's not an OTA update anymore

stock rooted gingerbread??

I am using Froyo stock and rooted right now (my phone is not stable on any roms for some reason). So should i just put my phone back to stock and update then reroot? Or is there a better way? I cant seem to find the stock rom to flash.
You can remove the root and then go to GB and then re-root.

That's what I did, I used Odin to flash back to stock EC05 and am waiting for the OTA, then I'll probably reroot when a reliable method has been worked out. It seems right now there's a lot of workarounds to get root and CWM to stay.
Here is how I did it:
Odin to stock EC05
Download update.zip to SD Card and install through samsung stock recovery
Odin mkasic's kernel followed by CWM 3.1.0.1 Purple
Flash SU.zip, GPS-Fix.zip, EC05AdFree.zip
Advanced Restore of /Data through CWM
Up and running with all my existing settings, has been solid for 24hrs with no fc's.
If he's stock EC05 and rooted then you can just use the one click root windows application and remove the root. Then apply the EI22 update.zip and then do the current root method for EI22. He doesn't have to lose everything if he's on stock froyo.

It will ALWAYS be a workaround solution. So there is no need to wait for that specific aspect... since the wait would be infinite. The problem with recovery not sticking has to do with the new stock kernel. The "workarounds" require a modified kernel.

1st use this, there is an un-root option:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
then you can load the update.zip in stock recovery
then to get back on root do this:

I am on stock with bloat removed. Will this work as well or will I have to odin to EC05 and lose everything? I figured I would have to odin back first.

The easiest way to do it, I think, is to do the manual update from stock EC05 to stock EI22. I did this procedure and have had zero problems. I used heimdall personally because I run Linux.
Once you have your stock GB up and running, odin/heimdall your cwm or acs recovery.bin and hold down the three button combo while it auto-reboots.
You'll get into the custom recovery, and you can flash su.zip and anything else you'd like while you're there.
Reboot the phone, and you should see that you're rooted just fine. The problem now is that there is a script that gets run on every startup called "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh" that re-installs the stock recovery on every boot. Now that you're rooted, use whatever means you'd like (file expert, terminal emulator, etc.) to get into /system/etc/ and delete that file.
You'll have to do one final odin/heimdall of the custom recovery.bin, but after that, you should be rooted and have a permanent custom recovery on stock EI22!
Sure, it's a workaround, but it's not that hard, and it works! It's easy to let the devs do everything for us, but every now and again it's good to get into your device and figure out the way things work on your own.
Good luck!

Thanks followed this guide made cwm 3.1.0.1 and root sticked. I am like many others likes to have everything as stock and as little changes so i didnt want to flash any custom kernel. This method will retain everything from stock just minus 1 script.
This is my revised method which only need to flash cwm 3.1.0.1 in odin 2 times and it will stick there forever.
Comming from a bone stock EI22
1. flash cwm 3.1.0.1 with reboot checked off (nothing check), put file in pda.
http://drockstar.devphone.org/EpicTar/cwm3.1.0.1.tar.md5
2. when its done, unplug data cable and pull out battery.
without rebooting system.
3. vol down, camera, power, to get into cwm recovery
4. install su.zip and reboot the phone (now you have root)
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip
5. install es explorer from market
5a. under menu/setting check the box root explorer and mount file system
5b. browse into phone /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
delete "install-recovery.sh" script or move it to your sd card if you want to retain a copy.
(long press into that file and delete option will come out)
6. shut off your phone
7. odin cwm 3.1.0.1 again with reboot checked
8. restart, cwm and root will be stick forever.

I think it would be a good idea to copy that script and put it somewhere instead of deleting it just in case you want to go back to bone stock in the future (who knows an ICS update LOL). Once copied, then delete the file.

you can odin the ec05 stock rom and update to ei22 and it will put that file back in. doesnt hurt to move that file to your sd card i guess.
Here is the stock EC05 ROM you are looking for. It formats your phone back to the RFS file system, but keeps your phone rooted and with CWM3.1.0.1
There is also a link on that page if you want to make your recovery go back to stock as well.
If you want to just ODIN and get onto EI22 stock, check this out. It's still RFS but it's deodexed, so a little faster. Comes with EC05 modem, which seems to still be more stable than the EI22, especially when it comes to Wifi.
EDIT: I take that back, that EI22 isn't so stock anymore, but it's closest you're going to get to a stock-ish EI22 that actually functions.
Odin back to stock EC05, update.zip, modified kernel patch and cwm the su.zip worked for me.
One question though.. stock OTA/update.zip is ODEXED, correct? Can I deodex what I have or do I need to re-flash a deodex stock rom and would I do it before or after uninstalling bloat?

OTA stock is Odexed, correct. Deodexing yourself takes some time... it's not just removing files, you'll have to edit quite a few things. If you're going to deodex your system using the ROM, you just ODIN it from wherever you are now. It will erase everything, like starting from scratch. But you can restore your data on top of it if you backed it up first.

Is anyone working on a one click CWM/root solution for EI22?

I know I'm not the only one who can't Odin flash CWM and actually get it to stay after reboot
So, anybody working on an easier, more reliable method?

I was able to get it to stick just now by using this kernel... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307980
Flash mkasik's key fix kernel mentioned above *before* you flash clockwork. Then it will stick. I posted this over in the purple clockwork recovery thread but I don't think its gotten a lot of attention. If you use heimdal you could pull the zimage and recovery.bin from the tar files and flash them at once as well. That should work too.

Glad to help, what made me think of that is I remembered back when purple clockwork came out you would still go into orange clockwork if you did a reboot recovery from the Clockwork App, and it was because there is actually a copy of recovery built into the kernel, then everyone updated their kernels with the new recovery and it was always purple. So when this happened I thought that sprint must have done something to send the three finger boot into the kernel recovery, turns out that must have been the case because a custom kernel fixes it.
The problem is that after (any) OTA update, the phone will reflash the recovery kernel with the stock boot kernel image on every boot, unless the recovery image is already "up to date". Here's the longer explanation.
Anyways, there's two fixes:
1. Flash a custom kernel, then a custom recovery. (As other have noted.)
2. Once rooted, use root explorer or something to delete the files: "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh" and "/system/recovery-from-boot.p". That will let you run the stock EI22 kernel with a custom recovery.

[UNROOT]The easiest unrooting method

I tested this out with both the transformer and slider. No need to do anything complicated.
ASSUMPTION:
You have CWM installed.
INSTRUCTION:
(1) Download the latest firmware from asus website.http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=20&s=16&m=Eee%20Pad%20Transformer%20TF101&os=32
(2) Unzip it. Inside, you should find another zip file. Place that zip file on your micro sdcard.
(3) Plug in your micro sdcard. Go into CWM.
(4) Wipe data/ factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe davik cache.
(5) Flash in the zip file you just got from the asus website.
(6) Once restarted, you will be back on non-rooted stock rom and stock recovery.

Download and install this app. Run the app and grant superuser access. Then flash the custom recovery. This will install cwm recovery. Then go to the development section and browse the custom roms. Download the rom of your choice, place on sd card, boot into recovery (shut down, then hold the volume down key and power key, then when prompted on screen, press the volume up key) Before flashing a new rom, u will want to do a full wipe first. (back up any needed data first) You will want to install from zip file. Choose the rom you downloaded, and now you have a custom rom installed.

updating from 1.2 to 1.4.2 with EMMC CWM

OK, i have been out of the nook color game for far too long and it seems most of the threads are talking about going from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2. as you can tell, we haven't touched the nook color in a while (OS wise)
basically from what i can remember, while ago, when the NC first came out i rooted and Rom'd it all on the internal memory. it currently has CWM on it (old orange version) and stock 1.2 OS that i installed through CWM.
i tried installing the nookcolor_1_4_2_keepcwm.zip file or whatever it is, and it aborted the install....assuming because it is an older version of CWM?
the only way i could get into CWM was through trying to install the factory 1.4.2 file, once install failed, i could hit the power button and it would bring up CWM.
where can i go from here. i would be completely fine getting rid of CWM all together and just having B&N handle the updates from now since i have a couple of my own toys
ask questions, and i will try to answer them...but like i said, been out of the nook color game for a long time. i am comfortable with flashing stuff through CWM, not cumfortable with ADB nor making a bootable SD card...although i can follow directions so anything is possible.
thanks for you help, and my wife thanks you too.
The way I would go is to install newer CWM then use one of the 1.4.1 updates I posted in this post.
Then let B&N update it to 1.4.2 for you.
Ok, so how would I go about installing a newer CWM? As sad as this sounds I have never installed CWM any other way other than rom manager. And once I get the new CWM and 1.4.1 on there, do I just update by throwing the official release on the root of the internal memory like B&N tells me to or do I have to have the Keep CWM.zip?
Thanks again for all your help..appreciate it

Anyone? The wife is hounding me. Even if I can restore to completely stock she would be happy. How do I do this?
Thanks guys
Well, if you can still boot into a rooted 1.2 and have ROM Manager on there you can use that to flash the latest CWM. If not find the CWM 3.2.0.8 zip and the b & n 1.4.1 zip mentioned above and put them on a sd cad. I then boot into your current CWM and flash the new CWM (unless you did that via Manager) then flash 1.4.1 and call it macaroni.
One thing to remember followoing J5's response is... if you leave CWM setup as recovery... updates will fail.... That's why I have the 1.4.1 with CWM as alternate boot file with the others.

Use winimage32 to write the img file to the uSD card... that creates the bootable CWM uSD.... then put the 1.4.1 files on it and use that to flash to your nook.
1.2 to 1.4.3?
trying to revive old thread prior to launching a new one. I am in similar situation as OP (running 1.2.0 with CWM on emmc). Have no problem going through steps to get this done (been there done that on this old NC which is my sons now, and have an Asus Eeepad I have rooted and played with for about a year as well) including flashable/bootable sd card.
Question is to just confirm the steps to go from 1.2 to latest 1.4.3 and root it again (assuming I'll be using MN5 for that):
- Would I have to unroot and start installing BN updates until 1.4.3??
- Do I have to unroot first or can I just install a BN update to get to 1.4.3 and then run the manualnooter 5.x?
As OP mentioned all I see are steps for moving from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2 or 1.4.3 so wanting to check prior to moving forward.
Thanks.

trying to revive old thread prior to launching a new one.
Thanks.

You can flash the 1.4.3 directly over the old ROM. Just look at my tips thread linked in my signature at item A15. There is a link for a CWM flashable 1.4.3 there. And yes, you use MN 5 to root again.
