improving 3G signal? - G2 and Desire Z General

well ive finally got myself a desire z to replace my near deaths door htc dream and i love it in every way, except one, orange's miserable 3g coverage, for some reason they seem to have two blackspots, one is my entire workplace, the second is my house (the phone is fine when my old o2 payg sim is in, its full bars all the way) i had checked the coverage before i signed up too, but enough of the hows and whys of how the problem began, its fixing it im concerned with as no 3g at work is something i really cant be doing with
so first off is there any particular radio that has significantly better 3g signal? i dont mind sacrificing a little battery life for it, after that i dont know, i cant really think of much else that could help me, id go and get my contract changed at the shop but as they were out of stock of DZ and had to order the phone in they wrote "no 14 day change of mind" on the contract so im assuming im stuck with it even though i dont want to change the phone itself but the carrier (although i guess that is the hard part really) but enough waffle, can anyone help me out? id be most appreciative

Basically u can't make signal that does not exist pop into thin air no matter what radio you use. Make sure your running the latest available, after that it is what it is.

looks like ill have to pop into carphone warehouse and see if they cant change the contract, if not i guess ill be going back to pay as you go and having one damn expensive desire z on my hands unless orange decide to let us share tmobiles data coverage as well as the phone/text but my hopes arent high on that front

They are doing 3G network sharing starting this summer. Orange is low on 3G coverage so it is buying some off 3.

The lament over HD in US...

I realize I'll do nothing but create clutter with this post.... but I am doing it anyway
I've looked at everything out there (in the US)... Diamond, Touch Pro, upcoming Omnia (at Verizon), even thought about Xperia... Nothing comes close to HD, in my mind. But buying it without network discounts and giving up 3G is crazy too.
I am completely bummed out about it. HTC, damn you! Why hasn't someone else stepped up to make phone like this that works in the US. High-res screen, high-res camera, thin, with screen of at least 3.5"? Ya know, so you can actually thumb-type without the hardware keyboard? Even if you have fingers that are bigger than a 7-year-old's? Like a normal person...
All this can make someone go old-school BlackBerry... and they don't have a cure for that...

for you, giving up network discounts and 3G is crazy. for me, those 2 criteria are low on my list. i view it more as a tradeoff/investment to get what i want (not what i need, lol). i used 1 subsidized device in that past 4 years; everything else was/is unsubsidized. my experience suggests that unlocked/unsubsidized devices sale faster and at higher prices. anyway, i resale my phones via ebay and use the proceeds to fund some or all of the cost of my next device. i must admit that i've been fortunate enough to also fund my tech habit via dividends from sporting "investments". we all have our addictions, vices, etc. unfortunately, the phone addiction can be an expensive one.

i agree with you 100%! my suspicions are that contractual agreements between htc and at&t and at&t and "the fruit company" have something to do with the HD not coming to the US. at&t is the only GSM carrier with an extended 3G footprint and bringing the HD to at&t would directly compete against the fruity phone. the fruit company wouldn't like that, lol. now that still doesn't explain why the HD is missing the us 3G bands...this could be due to technical reasons.

with the improved sensitivity of the HD, one-handed or two-handed thumb typing is better than i expected. there's always room for improvement, but it works very well for me.

tried the crackberry drug once and had major withdrawal issues, lol. for me, it's not a viable substitute.
Feeding the addiction, eh? I'd actually live without 3G -- I keep my Kaiser on Edge most of the time anyway, if only it was cheaper. I am just surprised this is the only phone either than the fruity company's youPhone that has a touchscreen >= 3.5" (HTC Universal excluded). Bastardos... the lot of'em.
Answer me this...
I couldn't hold out anymore and I ordered one from the Uk. Now everyday I'm thinking of sekking it for a AT&T Fuze to get 3G back, but this is what I don't get. I had a Polaris, which as far as I know never was released on a carrier here; yet it still ran US 3G. WHY DON"T THEY DO THAT WITH THIS THING!!?

so, if you're selling to get 3G, you must be using 3G extensively everyday? true? if yes, and i was in your shoes, i would have passed on the HD. regarding the 3G bands, well, marketing decisions by someone led them to exclude the 3G bands on the HD. the market has changed (for whatever reaason) since the Polaris was relased. the first evidence of that was the release of the Diamond without 3G. we're just small pawns in the game...
3G remorse
Yes, I lived in Orlando and now NY where both had great 3G almost all times. I am constantly checking the internet on pricing items and looking at emails. I hate to admit this too, but the Iphone 3G was pretty functional for me. I just hate Mac everything so i got rid of it. I just love the screen on the HD though! I think I'm buying a Polaris tomorrow.
Man, if i could get this phone, i could care less about 3G lol. I am with sprint, but am willing to ORDER THIS PHONE FROM ACROSS THE POND, have it shipped over here and getting an At&t plan or something and using the sim card in this phone.....just to have this phone. Knowing me......i will probably buy this phone, a good friend of mine ordered it and had it shipped to him the other day. I am going to visit him for the holidays and will finally FINALLY get some hands on with this bad A** phone.

I went through the exact thoughts after getting my omnia. I lacked the willpower to hold off for the HD. After having having the omnia two weeks I broke the piggy(again) to get the HD.
I'm with US t-mo, limiting my 3G options to the G1, which does does not impress. I'm satisfied with 2G and WiFi.
Ultimately, I'm extremely happy with the beautiful screen and build quality.
By the way, anyone want to buy a slightly used omnia....CHEAP!
ME TOO lol. Im with sprint right now and would give anything to get my hands on this phone. So you have t-mobile? I thought this phone could only run on At&T? Am i missing something, i live in right behind a t-mobile store, what did you do to get your plan onto the HD and get it running? PM ME IF NEED BE

It's a GSM phone, so if it's not locked it will work on any GSM network -- that's AT&T and T-mo in the US.
Ok, so lets say that you can get this phone unlocked here in the U.S. And sign up with T-mobile with one of their plans, could you just switch out the sim card from the phone you get into this phone? Im really interested in getting this phone and am willing to open up a contract with either T-MOBILE or At&t. Im not a big talker but am a big texter. I was looking into the basic myfaves plan but was wondering if you could use the pay-as-you-go plans with this phone also. Any one have any suggestions?

it's already unlocked if you purchase from someone like Clove, Expansys. and yes, all you have to do is pop in your SIM card and you're good to go. i got mine from Clove Technologies and it's working great on at&t. it will even configure your internet settings...

Should I Throw In The Towel With My HD2?

I love my hd2, I just got it. But, I'm using it on ATT and currently am seeking to unlocking it. I'm thinking about switching to Nexus one because of it's ATT 3G and wont need to be unlocked. I have been without phone use for about 3 weeks. I want an easier to open battery door, but that's about it. I really don't want to have to mail my HD2 back and wait for a refund, then buy a N1 and have to wait.... I just really need help, should I switch or not? I barely ever make calls on my phones, I usually text and don't have Data but was planning on adding it on when I got the HD2. Will Edge Data speeds be really bad? I'm just so confused right now, I was hoping I could trade my HD2 for a N1 to make it quick and easy so if I didn't like it I could switch back but NOBODY with a N1 wants a HD2. It's stressing me out because I need a phone to use ASAP, but don't want to make the wrong decision and be stuck with a phone I hate for possibly years since I'm not signing another contract with ATT, but don't plan on switching to another carrier.
the N1 has ATT 3G bands
EDIT: wow, I guess it does. How the hell did I miss that they released an AT&T/Rogers version of the N1??
The difference in EDGE vs 3G is quite substantial. Nowadays I would consider EDGE data connectivity speeds almost useless. So for you, I would recommend a native 3G device over an unlocked device that only connects via EDGE. ( Not that I am recommending the N1 over the Hd2 )
I understand the inconvenience you state about having to return your phone online and to be without a phone in the meantime. Have you considered selling your HD2 locally via Craigslist? Then use the $$ towards the Nexus!
Or better yet, since you're out-of-contract you should just keep the HD2, since you love it so much anyways, and switch to a no Contract Tmo plan with Data and save some $$ !

So you have me a bit confused. Do you have a T-mobile HTC HD2? & why would keeping this bind you into a contract with AT&T?
If you are using AT&T and worried about data speeds I'd say to get a phone that works with AT&T 3G, You do know that AT&T will be releasing iPhone 4 this month? ( I know I am probably going to get bashed for this) This phone will be the biggest bang for your buck if your looking into touch screen, 3G speeds, & smartphones. I'd say return your HD2 wait for your refund and buy a simple phone til the iPhone 4 comes out.
But that is just me. I am just fine with my HD2 but I am on T-mobile so I get 3G speeds already.
Edit: okay I just reread your post so please disregaurd my above statement, I thought you were signing another contract with AT&T
But regaurding your N1 if you are big on data speeds and the N1 can both support both 3G networks for AT&T & T-Mobile then i'd almost say its worth it and do what I said above and get a cheap phone off of like craigslist to hold you down til then.

AT&T's data sucks... Everyone that I know using an Iphone says the data, interenet, etc is slow as hell. Also At&t just announced they are doing away with their unlimited data plan... How nice of them...
If your not getting 3g speeds HD2 its pretty useless.
Yea, I heard about att's new "courtesy" for data. I'd like to switch to T-Mobile but my contract doesn't end till sometime around April of 2011. Craigslist isn't an option because I'd need to get the same ammount I paid for it and I'm not sure if I can take it back anymore. I'm never using eBay again either.... TOO MANY FEES, I'd end up losing $50 if I got $400 for it. Nobody on here is looking for an HD2 either.... I love the phone but if Edge is as bad as i'm hearing I don't think I can go through with this.
Do yourself a favor and throw that hunk of crap in the garbage and get the new iphone on the 24th, i have had 4 HD2's and all were huge piles of ****, you cant even text message on the thing unless you type one letter per 20seconds LOL i actually threw my last one at the wall and smashed it cause it is just a **** phone with good parts that HTC obviously couldnt sput together to make it run smooth, Even the scrolling is choppy as ****, anyways sorry im so angry but these phones are ****!!!! Im even gonna switch to ATT if i have to from tmobile on the 24th to get the iphone 4 if i have to, but hopefully verizon will have it as well. GL buddy
Thanks... Their was an offical statement made by Apple that their would be no CDMA iPhone anytime soon.
who knows with apple, they might throw out a bone, it would be sick if they offered it through Tmobile.
yeah i'm trying to sell my HD2 too.
might have to resort to ebay...
*sigh*
I've heard you can get very fast edge speeds with at&t... around 700-800kbps. Theres a thread about it somewhere in the original Leo General section.... thats as fast as I'm getting with T-Mobile 3G. I'd prefer the HD2 over a N1. I would definitely not go with the iphone. But thats just me. I prefer WinMo. I'm not a fan of locked down OS's like apples. I like the versatility and functionality of winmo. My HD2 has been one of the most stable phones I've owned.... and what other phone can you play any playstation game at full speed?
ATT has the best 3G for a GSM carrier, I live in South Florida so I suppose if your correct about fast EDGE speeds than I may take a second look about that. I just need to unlock it first...

yup i know but they might be able to stop that with the new Iphone but who knows, if there is a jailbreak and unlock i will just cancel ATT after i get it and switch back to Tmobile and keep the Iphone. I have a way of not having to pay the cancel fee so its all good.

Im with you on this starkall. Im not going to get an iPhone but really cannot stand this damn HD2 anymore. Coming from a G1 which has flawless SMS and MMS and going to this where you have to repeat stupid steps just to type a message is killing me...I love the display, like winmo, but just cant live with this sms and cracking phone calls.
According to recent posts in the LEO non-tmo section HTC doesnt feel like its their problem. So probably no fix for it unless its replaced completely or Win 7 is ported soon.
I have an HTC incredible for my work phone and everytime i pick that back up for emailing, sms or just straight web browsing im more disappointed with the HD2..Im not one of those " F^#K WinMo, android rules" people. I actually haven't used the winmo os since back on my TMO dash. I really like it and see huge potential with some of these devs...But basic sms..come on meow.
yeah Ima pick up a nexus one not an iPhone.
I'm using an HD2 on AT&T right now. EDGE isn't bad on it; it's definitely manageable for most websites. Only downside is that YouTube is pretty much a no go.

Noob Questions, sorry in advance!

So, I am getting bored with my iphone 4... and feel like tinkering again. I loved my nexus one and these forums.... now I am thinking about getting a desire hd (my biggest concern is, it will NOT run on 3g on my network - rogers).
I am hoping and assuming I can get by with wifi and 2g.... if that phone is that good and fun.....
Will 2.3 get on this device... as soon as these guys get their hands on it?
How is the battery life? Is it easy to change the battery (buy spares etc)
Any input would be appreciated. thx
**updating this a bit: So, I thought this would at least work on 3g with telus new network..... if that is not the case, I might just sell the phone.... even though I ordered the otterbox and higher capacity battery! My question is, am I better off leaving and selling the phone as is mint and untouched (sim free phone). Or would the value be better rooted? thx again
I live in the states and I don't even notice it missing 3G. I'm mostly on wi-fi, and when I'm not, 2G is enough to not care it's not 3G. The phone is worth it for me. I wouldn't trade it for any other phone right now, not even MyTouch 4G which I could have, but the DHD is to awesome. I have it now just over a week, and the battery lasts a solid day and a half, and it keeps getting better each charge. I could probably get two days if I needed to. FroYo 2.2 is all I need, so I'm not concerned when it will get GB, but I assume soon after it's release, seeing how this is a flagship phone. I say get it, and you won't regret it.
Oh, and as far as changing the battery, it's not that hard once you get the hang of how the cover comes off and on. Same with the sim/antenna cover, and if you do happen to break them, HTC already has them on their site, so you can buy more if you need to. Once you remove the battery cover the battery actually just falls out. It's held in by the cover, so once you remove it, be careful not to drop the battery out without having your hand there to catch it.
thx, yea... I kind of just want to try the beast, lol.... just to be stupid, what is dhd? I have not researched the phone yet... I just see one in canada on ebay... ends in 9 hours, thinking about bidding on it..... I just like trying new phones, if you have any more input, it is much appreciated

DHD = Desire HD, I will be mad if you get the DHD before me. (just kidding haha)
Don't worry too much about 2.3, there will probably be a way on here (xda) for you to flash to it when it comes out anyway.
Won the auction, I should have it by wed at the latest
He claimed there was a 3g fix out there somewhere, but that makes no sense... if it does not use the band....
but he has a utube video out there, using the htc telus hero on rogers w/3g.... the hero and the desire use the same bands right?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWEAfJ_DxZc
up for this youtube video, if these phones use the same band/freq.... does that mean I can make it work on rogers via 3g?

Nope you can't, that's the Hero he got from Telus which have the North American band ...it's nothing special. However, the Desire HD have the Global frequency, 900, 2100.
Rogers, bell, telus are using 850, 1900
that sucks, 2g blows..... I mean, really... if I am going to focus on wifi, I won't even need a data plan.... unless they release a new desire hd for telus
but I do love my rogers retention plan
updated for this question

I wonder if 3g matter that much though ... but to answer your question, I would say leave it untouched.
well, I do use a fair amount of data via 3g... approx 300 mb a month.... 2g is almost unusable in comparison.... I will get it and play with it and see how I like it.... but without 3g, makes me sad, lol
thx
Desire HD Coming
OMG. I just ordered my DHD today so hopefully i should get it in about a week's time. No more uTube watching for me when you've got the real thing to play with.
got mine today and put the otterbox on it! I highly recommend the case....
however, I could not get my rogers "2g" to work.... I hope it is just me being new to android, I know 2g is garbage.... but atleast it would still work for email etc.... I was told it would work on this phone?
Any ideas
thx
You need to set the right APN settings. You can call rogers technical support for that. Tell them you have an Android phone, they should be able to walkthrough the steps with you. Or you can google it too.

Phone is pretty sweet overall..... but a few odd things I noticed so far, the camera is "off".... if I point at a bright yellow piece of paper, it appears white....
the colors seem washed in comparison to the ip4, the dual led flashlight is not as bright as the ip4s single (not a fanboy - just stating the obvious)...... I been playing with it for atleast 4 hours, battery life seems pretty good overall, all things considered.

Experiences with Evo/Sprint?

I've been getting fed up with T-Mobile lately, the coverage at my house is limited, if not non-existent.
I was wondering if anyone would care to share their experiences with Sprint's network (4g speeds/coverage, reliability, etc). Also, experiences with the Evo itself (battery life, durabilty, accessory quality/quantity, etc)
I'm currently using a Nexus One, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!
Seems like your biggest issue is your coverage at your house. Best advice I can give you is go get an EVO, go home, check to see if you have good signal and 4G.
U can download map viewer from the market check the Sprint 4g coverage
And as for battery life it was not until I rooted that I felt I was getting the most out of it my battery life dramatically changed
And I've had nothing but a good experience I came from a moment so honestly tht was not the best Android experience so this phone have to say im really surprised by this device and what it can do if u have played around with one it really is not the same as owning it and since Sprint has the 3o day money back guarantee u should defin try itout and see if its for u

Punctuation is so overrated these days.
You will love an Evo, Sprint is a great company and the customer service has come a long way.
Try it for 30 days free, if not satisfied then return it, (yes you can root it and still return it)

Thanks!

Sprint actually has pretty good coverage in the San Francisco area. It's really hard to build new towers there nowadays so younger networks (T-Mobile) or older networks that are now overloaded (AT&T) have a really tough time working well there.
I suggest you take advantage of Sprint's 30-day unconditional return policy and test drive the EVO 4G for a few weeks. If you don't like it, or it doesn't work well for you, you can return the device and pay nothing (no restock fee or prorated usage fee, or anything).
Reiterating what others have said, signal in your home/area is going to vary, and your best bet is to try it out.
Sometimes while you are in the 30 day window, if you try to cancel due to lack of signal in your home the store will offer the signal booster thingy (I can't remember the name) and wave the monthly fee. It connects to your router and essentially gives you a tower in your home over the internet.
As for the EVO, I've had a Hero and a T-Mobile G1, and I love the EVO. It does everything I want, and then some. Rooting is key though, and I think the best battery life comes from the custom roms on these forums.
Give it a go for 30 days without canceling your T-Mobile phone. At the worst, you'll pay for a month of service on both lines. Once you test it out though and determine Sprint is the way to go, you can transfer your number from T-Mobile.
Oh, and 4G sucks the battery from your phone, so it's really rather useless in my opinion, unless you're tethering and plugged in, otherwise it's as good as a cable connection.

This map is crap. The map indicates that I have excellent coverage at home and work and is not so. Do what tgruendler said. Get the phone, take it home and test it and see what you think.
When I first got my Evo a lot of people I knew were saying "it's a nice phone and all, but you had to go to SPRINT?"
Now the Evo also marks my maiden voyage with Sprint, so I don't know the history that may have gotten them this bad rep ... but I have to say I've been nothing but pleased. I bought my phone a mere 2 weeks before my road trip across 4 states in 3 weeks (started in Georgia and ended up in Washington DC). During the ENTIRE road trip I had signal. Now I didn't call people, but I did use google maps and Nav and I maintained data the entire time (some minor blackouts in Mentone Alabama looking for an old friend's wedding ... but if you saw where I was you'd completely understand too ... and GMaps still got me there fine).
So while during this trip I saw 4G go up and down ... I will say their data was consistent. I uploaded photos to facebook nightly, took pictures all day, and even occasionally handed the phone to the kids to stream you tube videos (OK I had to plug in for that ... phone can't handle 4-6 hours straight youtube).
My only complaint with this phone while on 2.1 an touring ... was that 4G would destroy my phone (only when connected ... 4G seemed to idle fine in areas with no coverage). By destroy i mean that doing the same heavy uploading of images would kill the phone in about 4 hours.
Now back in the home land of LA ... vacation is over and I'm making more calls than you tube videos. In this case it's more of a Sprint vs ATT conversation (my old provider) and I have to say: Sprints coverage blows away ATT in all areas here. I consult .... meaning i travel all corners of the southland. While Sprint may have bad signal reception occasionally ... it _never_ disconnects. In contrast my ATT signal was always clear .... when it bothered to connect and would disconnect _constantly_ even when driving down major highways. So I like the Sprint service much better.
My Phone has "evolved" with me which is huge. 4G is now here where I live ... but I've also learned to root and tweak my EVO ... and I leave 4G on all day now and can make it from wake up to home with the wife and kids on one charge without having to plug in (I do tend to car charge every so often if i know I'm going to be on a long conference call or can't resist flashing a new ROM during my lunch break ... but that's not suprising). Between 2.2 improvements and wonderful after market ROMs and tweaks, the EVO isn't nearly as bad of a battery vacuum as it was when I first got it so it's to the point that I just leave all the features enabled (except wifi ... i don't see a point when 4g is faster than _any_ free wifi spot that is always over congested).
The ONLY thing I really don't like about Sprint is that i don't get voice and data at the same time. 4G fixes that (another reason i leave it on all the time)... but it's coverage is honestly spotty ... unlike Sprint 3G this one really is location sensitive.
The phone itself ... is awesome. I just can't complain as it still feels cutting edge after 6 months of having it (or is it 7 now ... i forget).
Summary: the battery used to be BAD with 4g turned on. 2.2 improvements and a good community changed all of that... and the phone is flexible and powerful enough that I don't care what's been released sense. I would love a longer battery life (who wouldn't), but considering I basically have a PC in my Pocket I'm OK with that trade off.
EDIT: one other negative I should note: I noticed with the stock HTC ROM having 4G turned on would occasionally make the whole phone stutter and lag, even when doing trivial things like scrolling between home screens. It would actually made the phone feel slower with 4g turned on if i wasn't directly doing a data intesive task. Custom ROMs _completely_ solved that problem. For the record i currently use Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4 on the HTC17 kernel with the battery tweak, and all sense ripped out I could get away with (rosie pulled out compeltely, gingerbread keyboard, etc), and those stutters are a thing of the past.
Fantastic phone! Great network. Sprint is working hard to improve the quality of their customer service and doing a good job. They have already rolled out WiMax, so if you are in a coverage area you should be getting some pretty snappy speeds there. I also like the fact that Sprint isn't afraid to look at other technologies. I read an article the other day indicating that Sprint will probably begin developing an LTE network to work alongside the WiMax. All things considered, I would definitely recommend the Evo and Sprint

Yeah - I couldnt have said it better my self...
Been with Sprint now for 9 years and have no complaints, they are like brandy - only getting better with age...
EVO is by far the best phone out there and Sprint is (IMO) by far the best carrier out there...

Not having a signal at home isn't an issue if you're with Sprint. When my wife and I moved into our new house back in May, we found out a little too late that our house was in a dead zone and there was absolutely no signal inside on any carrier. We had to step outside to make a call or send a text. After a couple months, I called Sprint and told them what was up. Without question, they offered me a free Airave. No equipment cost, no monthly charges. All they asked was that I send it back to them if I ever leave Sprint in the future. We both get full signal in every room of the house now.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised. I didn't have to beg, argue, or demand anything. As soon as I told them what was up, the dude just asked if it would be okay if they sent me one for free. Uh... yeah, that's okay with me! lol
I'm in an area far from 4G coverage (Southern Illinois) but after 10 years with Sprint I've been nothing but pleased. I've gotten free upgrades, free features, and all sorts of perks from some very helpful customer service people. On top of that I've never had a billing issue (unlike nearly everyone else I know on a certain other network). The only issue I have is I don't particularly care for their website, but that's just me.
As for the EVO, I upgrade from the Hero two weeks ago and I LOVE it. I definitely don't regret getting it.
Oh, another thing I like about Sprint: When I call customer service, 9 times out of 10 I'm connected to somebody in CONUS and not someone with English as a 3rd language. lol

Signal Issues

I got my Vibrant right at launch and I've never had a stable 3g signal. It always seems to go back and forth between 3g and Edge. I always just assumed we didn't have good signal in my area but I now know that isn't true.
I picked up a used G1 to take the camera out of to use at work and loaded it up with updated Radio, SPL, and Rom and it gets a steady 3g signal all the time and also got my wife a Mytouch 4G for Christmas and her phone basically stays on 3g all the time too.
Like right now my phone is sitting next to me on my desk at work and it's on 3g but when I pick it up and click on an app or two it goes back to Edge. Could this be a hardware issue and something I could fix like the hardware GPS fix?
Just to add I currently have Axura 2.2.7 and KA6 modem. I've used every modem that's come out and same issue with all. Thanks for the help.
bump for some help lol.
It's a tough decision because I like this phone so much but not having a reliable 3g signal makes it tough. If worse comes to worse I guess I will have to sell the phone and might go back to the G1 until something else comes out. Still debating on getting a G2 or mytouch but don't want buyers remorse when something better comes out next month.
Call t-mobile and see about a replacement phone. might just be your radio is bad? Or defective phone all together.
That's what I would do.

I had issues like this kinda I live in a hspa area and was having great 3g service 4bars all the time and one day it just would go to edge I called tmo talk to technical support and told them about it they had someone go out and look at the towers by me and they fixed it in 2 days im running 2.2.5.7 with KA6 and have great service still.

I really don't think there's a tower problem because I get great signal on my G1 and on my wifes mytouch 4g.
I'd love to contact Tmobile about this but I can't see it going anywhere because I've opened my phone and removed the camera. We can't have camera phones at work but we are allowed to remove the camera and replace it with permanent epoxy so that a camera can't be re-installed. Plus I've had the phone since launch.

Where do you work? A secret government lab or something?
Who makes you remove the camera and the epoxy of it? Why don't you just leave your phone at home or in your car then?
Anyways, that sucks. If it's a defective modem/radio you're kind of SOL unless there is a way to mod it?

My workplace is the same way. Perhaps the OP and I work for the same company. We of course can't confirm that though... or you know... silent black helicopters and all that will show up...
The men in black suits and dark sunglasses. >.>
Yeah, for your own safety I will not answer that question lol.
Leaving it in a car or at home isn't an option. I get up at 445 and get home from work about 1600, I sleep about 7hrs a night. I didn't pay that much for my high end "mobile" phone to only access it for about six hours out of the day lol. I don't mind not having a camera anyway, I never used it when I did have it.
Looks like I'm screwed on the signal issue. Sucks. So you guys think the Mytouch 4g or G2 would be better? Or is there another phone coming soon to Tmobile I should wait for?

Welp, if you want to give samsung another go. The Vibrant 4G is rumored to come next month, the 23rd? So if want to wait that long then do it. Otherwise there's always W7 Phones? Or the G2

There are many new phones coming in the next year - I would hold out a couple of months. (and I'm not talking Vibrant 4G+ )
I might wait a bit then. I can't see myself getting another Samsung. I'd have hung onto the Vibrant for quite a while if it weren't for the signal issues because it's a great piece of hardware. I just don't trust Samsung to keep us updated. Not saying I'll never buy a Samsung phone again but they will have to turn their track record around as far as updating software before I jump back in. HTC seems like a much safer bet although I won't have that pretty screen
