I want to back up or make image of my phone including system app and data so that I can restore my phone in case flashing to new custom ROM fails. I tried Titanium Backup but it does not back up system app...can anyone please help if it is not the correct app for doing this kind of backup?
Also, there are many other queries:
Which Custom ROM should I try? Indroid is one of the ROM etc
What is the meaning of different terms like GPS Fix, bootlogo, Lagfix etc?
I gone through the sticky thread in Android Development for Galaxy 3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858583
but did not got any useful information about what are these things
Just making sure that I know all the pros and cons before flashing my phone to Froyo
you can dump em with adb, I dont remember exactly how, will try to find it.
Its something along the lines of:
adb shell
dd dev/block/stl6 "target folder"/factory.rfs
it could be stl7 though :S
@ stubborn - Sorry but I did not got anything that you are referring to?
very thanks clarkkov for the info.
You said -You can use stock (bare, oreginal) Samsungs Froyo ROMs which can be downloaded from Samfirmware.com. With custom ROMs you can get complications if you don't know how to use them.
I think that any ROM other than that comes pre-installed on my phone is Custom ROM?
Isn't that true?
And also, I have to struggle that which one is good for my phone? How to do that?
Dude wait for the apocalypse final version to release ..I have checkout the beta 2 ..its pretty good. That's. A good costing rom
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
I'm also waiting on the apocalypse version to flash my phone.
Thanks clark for the great information.
If I download any Custom ROM (say from Indroid as I heard it is great), would there be any known issues for that ROM?
If I find any issue specific to that ROM, would the developer usually fix them in next version or so? How frequent are these versions?
Is there any stable version that says this version is most stable in terms of this X added functionality?
Just to confirm that I5801 and I5800 are same? we can use firmware for one on another because on samfire, there is no firmware for I5801 for Asia region?
The techniques for several fixes that are mentioned in developer section can be applied on all Custom and Samsung ROMs that do not include that fixes..correct?
So basically Lagfix and JIT are fixes for the same issues but JIT is more effective..Am i correct?
Also, if I choose lets say X ROM to flash with: would there be any notes that specify that these fixes are already applied in this ROM so that I can apply other fixes individually?

@ clark - so, just as a suggestion, one should do both lagfix and jit fix to improve performance if they are not already included?
Just to confirm that jit compiler is preinstalled on the phone but not enabled. Jit fix just enable that?

Its pretty difficult to fail the flashing process so no need to really backup system apps. If it does fail however, you can reflash anytime and all system apps will pretty much be the same no matter which firmware you choose. I have tried both JPD & JPM and they work perfect.

Also, I understood that lagfix fixes the issues where the user clicks on say messaging and the content appear with latency to him
Similar to the above analogy, can anyone please let me know, what is fixed by JIT fix?
I know that JIT speeds up floating operations done by the phones CPU per second (MFLOPS) by enabling the Just In Time compiler....can anyone please let me know the scenario where JIT is used if enabled?

Yes, using bravo as base, but it shouldn't matter, kernel is from U8800 along with drivers.
it seems that the rom is not match with the u8800.

could u share more of ur experience with this rom?
What exactly have you changed with this rom? Why did you choose the Desire rom? First up you need a new /system/build.prop then you need to edit the /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script.orig file so it flashes stuff to the right locations. Then you need to change the ro.product.device so it matches the build.prop file. Then to top it off the bravo uses the MTD partitioning scheme but the u8800 uses the EMMC partitioning scheme. So to put it simply, the rom will not work without many changes.
Yeah it also seems to have modules built for 2.6.35.9 (including a bcm4329 driver whereas this phone uses a Qualcomm RF chip, I believe WCN1312).
atleast some work is going On
Updated the ROM, should work now- Can anyone test?

Logcat is disabled. That makes this ROM unusable for development
Pretty sure logcat is disabled by default on all ROMs, including stock. You need to enter the service menu (*#*#2846579#*#*) and turn it on there.

Nope. That's not true. I have never run across ROM, that has logcat disabled and I tried a lot of ROM-s, believe me (stock and custom ones). Only with this one I get error message Unable to open log device '/dev/log/main': No such file or directory when I type logcat in console.
It seams that this is due to disabled logcat by the kernel. So if someone can switch that on or change kernel, that would be great.
Oh and *#*#2846579#*#* code don't work for me either. Maybe it works on some other Huawei model, it sure don't work on Huawei U8800 Pro with MIUI-112160 on board.

My experience with the stock ROM leads me to believe it is, but that's anecdotal. I have logcat happily working on my U8800Pro, though (Huawei 2.3.6 ROM, which is similar to stock, I must add, though). That-Guy's guide also makes a point of telling you to turn it on for zergRush to work, which relies on logcat.
The Chinese ROM post is lacking in details, but if we look at genokolar's source, you can see that the driver is told to read a setting from the modem to decide whether to enable logging (actually, genokolar's set it to always enable logging but with a stock kernel it reads that setting). Guess where you can set this modem setting? That's right! From the ProjectMenu, designed to edit a bunch of Qualcomm (modem) settings, that appears with a stock ROM when entering *#*#2846579#*#*.
It seams that this is due to disabled logcat by the kernel. So if someone can switch that on or change kernel, that would be great.

You can check if the actual logging function is disabled entirely in the kernel by doing "zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_ANDROID_LOGGER". If it returns no, then it has been removed from the kernel. If it returns yes, then the setting needs to be toggled as per the above and That-Guy's guide.

Yeah... try with the stock ROM. Either this ROM is lacking the ProjectMenu.apk and MMI_Test.apk in /system/app or it needs to be run in another manner (genokolar adds an entry to the Settings apk in his CM7 ROMs).
qwerty12, thank you for comprehensive instructions and explanation. I'll check that next time if I have troubles with logcat. For now I guess I'll be using geno's Miui.us-1.12.16 witch serves me very well and has no issues with logcat.
Just hope that geno will make new version soon.

I checked "zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_ANDROID_LOGGER" command, and it says: CONFIG_ANDROID_LOGGER=y.
I guess that means that logging is enabled by kernel It just need to be turned on. But unfortunately (*#*#2846579#*#*) code don't work. Is there any other way to enable logging?

This is a ROM I made by cooking the latest Geno's CyanogenMod (4/06/2012) so it's Gingerbread 2.3.7
I tried to make the ROM as small I could (size is 60 MB only) and build the system around your needs by leaving only the essential apps there
I also applied some fixes to the ROM
Changes:
1) Home Button Works (Changed Geno's Kernel in the boot.img with an older one)
2) Soft Touch Buttons light properly (like number 1)
3) All Chinese Apps Removed
4) Added Some Apps(ZeamLauncher,Play Store,WallpapersChooser,Music)
5) Changed Default CPU Governor to SmartAssV2 and Default IO Governor to DeadLine
6) Added Some init.d tweaks
7) Removed Lots of Audio files from media folder to save space
8) Updated hosts file(no more ads in apps) and gps.conf(optimized for europe, although I didn't tested it)
9) Added Root Permissions
Known Issues:
ROM starts with GPS enabled by default, remember to turn it off after installation
Calculator scrolling is slow. This is a general AOSP gingerbread issue for stock calculator app. Even a nexus s lags when scrolling to advanced panel in calculator (tried this personally).
Theme Support is still there, but there is no extra theme included in order to save up space.Just install any .apk theme and then apply it from theme chooser/manager.
TV-OUT doesn't work.
Installation:
Do the following in any order
-------------------------------------------------
Wipe data/factory reset
Advanced->Wipe Dalvik Cache
Mounts & Storage-> Format system
--------------------------------------------------
Now flash the .zip file
Reboot
Enjoy!
Well test it out,and tell what you think!
Happy Flashing

You are free to just copy, paste my boot.img to your mod if you want too

The rom works pretty flawless, however when I launch it the first time I'm asked to give a "Sim Network Unlock Pin". I've read a little about it, and it looks like something confuses the phone to believe that it's locked to a certain mobile phone company (it's not)
Will this cause any problems later, if I keep using the rom without doing anything?

Whats the latest available version of TWRP for the MK809III? The version I have which I think is 2.7.0.0 is saying /system can't be mounted when trying to do a backup. Maybe you can ask the guy who's rom you're using, I see is a quite good rom.. And the developer should know how to make a zip with updated twrp.
But I don't think you need a backup.. I must have flashed my device 100 times and didn't have any problems..

The site I listed was from freaktab.com not freak-tab.de and the rom files in that thread are pulling up fine pointing to mediafire links.

I already have the rom from the mediafire link that you mention, the one i need is the d33's kernel and my question is, if you have this kernel or which kernel do you flashed with the rom?

The one that came with it. I never claimed to be running another kernel.

@famewolf Successfully flash, it works everything ok! I have a very last question, my memory ram is from 2GB but after flash it just shows 1GB. That's because the parameters files? Do you had the same issue?

Yes the parm file used determines how much space is allocated to system and how much to user.
Put a microsd card in with an sd-ext partition and use linksd to move the apps to it and you won't have to worry about space.
Hi @vonuzu which is the stock kernel for the stock rom that you linked? I mean "MK809III new Working". Because i can't find it.

The roms that are linked are as i find them on various chineese sites. They are posted as I find them, no aditional files. All you need is just to flash them. I guess the kernel is whitin the files.

Yup you're right. I just flashed the firmware file and the kernel is inside. Thanks for the reply.
