The Undervolt/OC Discussion Thread. - Epic 4G General

I've decided to make this thread so that we can all discuss uV and whatnot overclocking. Since lostsoul has been going crazy about his newly found uV skill's. I thought other's might wanna discuss and chit_chat about it also.
What's yo uV?!
*note* I'll be upating this op with information and mini tutorials on how to uV and test them. And anything else that's helpful.
- we all expect everyone to keep this friendly. Don't make this a "haha my epic's better then urs thread."

Here's My Current UVolt Rig Setup Pics Below
Very Amazing Whats The Best Part Is it's Stable haven't frozed nor will it freeze been testing it and it works quite brilliantly!
If requested i will take a video and upload it to show that it is working
im going to play a few games and see if it crashes or not?
IM on SRF 1.2 w/ Genocide 1.1 NO OverClock.

I can get that too but im Undervolted so it decreases performance. so i can have more battery life.
Plus on Froyo Without UV and NO OC i can get 2300 with OC i can get 2700. pretty damn close to your score but your also on 2.3

So does anyone get heat issue's? My cpu gets hot very very fast. With and or without uV (no overclock) it never used too do this until like 2-3weeks ago?

why uv and potentialy damage anything if uving is not needed. i would not risk damaging something i payed $600+ for just for enjoyment. ( i know im a hypacrit)
ive never had any heat issues. you do need to remember the weather is hotter outside so its gonna make for a hotter starting point for the phone. the phone generates heat as its used. so if the phone starts off at 69F and goes up to 89f on a cold day on a hot day the phone is starting at 89f the phone will be at 109f in the same time span. (these numbers arnt exact. there just there for example)

Believe me mystery. I'm not asking in a noob perspective. When it comes to core hardware and heat, volts. Iknow my stuff. Far as I can tell my heat issue is not normal. And I can say this because I own two epic's.

The other day i was on 74% left on battery and i had 14Hrs.
definitely helps out.
Undervolting also reduces heat so it shouldn't break anything and if your phone freezes just pop out the battery and reboot and don't apply that amount again know you know what it can handle is all.

Hope this fits the thread...
Running srf 1.2, genocide 1.1 final, ec05 modem... have 1120 and 1200 enabled in VC, yet CPU spy shows those last two as unused states. Been that way since I flashed Genocide a few days ago from Twilight Zone, (which showed up to 1200 as being used). Any ideas why?

Okay in VC is the 1.1 and 1.2 checked green. because if its red then its not active.
And download SetCPU and your voltages will be there and apply them and put max bar to 1.2.
Im sure it will work then

I had a good UV setup going a while back, don't remember exactly what the settings were but I do remember looking at my battery stats and seeing 1d 7hrs with like 35% left. I was definitely pretty happy about that. Since I flash new stuff like every 5 minutes lol, I have no idea what setup I was running.

Roger that, green for go I will do as you suggest, haven't had setcpu for awhile as the recommendations were all starting to go towards VC.
EDIT: done and done, setcpu installed, cranked up to 1200. Uninstalled and reinstalled cpu spy and even reset timers. Still shows 1120 and 1200 as unused. Either I'm not working this phone hard enough or perhaps cpu spy is buggin out with Genocide? Well, its not like I'm unhappy with the speed I'm getting...

Better battery life!

Hey guys & gals just wanted 2 share something with u. I recently decided 2 uninstall cetcpu from my phone & decided 2 go with cpu tuner instead. In doing so i've noticed my battery life improve significantly with some profile tweaking of course. If you've run the virtuous htc sence rom with the pershoot o.c kernal u know how disgusting the battery life can b.It literally sucks the juice out of your battery like "Debbie" from Debbie does Dallas sucks the juice out of...well u know. Anyway,i also noticed how little juice the system resources now use up. I included a screenshot of the battery status screen.Hope this helps anyone with battery issues especially if your running the rom & kernal mentioned above, it worked 4 maybe it can work 4 u. P.S I have the screen set to 20% brightness, gps, wifi, blutooth, autosync all disabled.Only reason i mention this is because even with all these things disabled along with a few other,b4 installing cpu tuner my battery would still drain like crazy. Thx.

i have almost the exact same info on mine with setcpu oc to 1ghz on CM6.1 and i get atleast a full day of use with frequent music and texts. alot better then any other android phone.
I don't know how you guys are having such bad battery life. Currently at the moment I am at 22h 11m 51s since unplugged with 57% left. This is all with CM6.1 RC4 w/ wifi + wifi calling on all the time when I am home, autosync on for everything, auto brightness, and some use of gps. I listen to music on my phone for atleast 3+ hours walking to and from class + texting, browsing, facebook, twitter, fantasy league during class and the occasional call, pretty good usage. with setcpu on oc to 1ghz with some profiles set up.
what if im not running sense?

Is the phone not quick enough at 1Ghz? I keep mines on stock speeds, have setcpu installed but don't use, and have CyanogensMod on it. I get the whole days worth plus more of battery. I can't even kill it when I want to recalibrate it.
A whole day for me is about 16-20 hours for me without charging. This is MADNESS!

Not that the phone is not fast enough. It's placebo effect where people "feel" that it needs to be faster when they overclock it at crazy speed. The G2 has already proved itself a speed monster, none of the android phones out there can top it right now. As for the battery life, I honestly don't notice any considerable improvement.

So what settings exactly are you using on the cpu tuner? Just wanted to know so I can replicate it.
My settings.
@quierotacobell...Under "Current" i have governor set to:conservative,Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
"Profiles":
Performancendemand-Max:1097Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Good:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Normal:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Power save:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz(services set to 2g)
Screen off:conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz
Extreme Power save:conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz(services set to 2g)
Keep in mind i have wifi, blutooth, & sync disabled all across the board. Also i'm simply stating what worked for me it's no guarantee it's going to work for you.
Hmm how can you get better battery life with CPU Tuner because the lowest you can go to minimum is 768?
Will try that out Utorrent, thanks.

General Warning: Overheating!

Just a warning to all using the FreeX10/other 2.2+ performance ROMs that I experienced is the overheating of the device. This may only be me, but I'm posting this just in case.
Quick details of my X10:
Flashed to FreeX10 Beta #4 last night.
Used SetCPU to set scaling to Performance and minimum clock speed @ 998MHz.
Using the 3G (build.prop) enhancement modification.
I have a rubber casing around the phone.
Usually connected to WiFi.
My phone has been on since last night and has been charging for most of the time since then and now.
Just then, I decided to turn my phone off a couple of times. I did not notice the heat from just holding it. I was browsing here and read a thread about removing the battery, so I just did that for some reason. It wasn't until I opened the case when I could smell the smell of melted/hot plastic - it was coming from the battery. I immediately placed the open-phone and the battery in front of a cool fan, the battery and phone both started to cool down and the smell disappeared. I couldn't find any liquid/melted plastics anywhere on/in the phone, but I could definitely smell it.
Just a general friendly warning (that can't hurt). Not sure if it's documented or not, and whether this is only Froyo or below/above.
Used SetCPU to set scaling to Performance and minimum clock speed @ 998MHz.

nytral is right. You set the CPU to run @998Hmz at _all time_ so it'[s only natural that the device/battery overheated.

u have managed to make a perfect guide on how to overheat the phone...
u push all the components to their max working capacity (full cpu, 'enhancement' of radio) and on top of that u keep it enclosed in a rubber casing...
bravo!!!

Sorry, Min is 245. Not 998.. :-/
And I'm pretty sure the material of the casing (rubber vs hard plastic) wouldn't matter, but would contribute to the heating. I'm sure that a lot of people would use a case of some sort to protect their device.
The only reason why I started this thread is because I was on a ROM not too long ago (a couple of nights ago), which has exactly the same settings and modifications, except, it wasn't running Froyo - it was running Eclair. And since I installed that Eclair ROM, the phone has only been turned off once (with the battery removed, about a couple of days after installing it and it being on and charging pretty much 24/7) and has been charging pretty much non stop.
The only difference is it is using Froyo instead of Eclair... Hence why I thought it'd be best to start this thread.

lol nice overheat guide
i'm using setcpu to scale it to powersafe and max @512 Hz
and when the screen is off it's max is set to the lowest (256?)
and when i wanna play games i always set it to min 256(?) and may 998 ans performance
then my battery won't drain so fast
nice overheating guidelines
Do you guys actually see a difference with setcpu? I have used every option available and nothing ever got slower or faster for me.

Yeah I'm running 2.2.1 and my X10 is no where near hot. well, at least in temperature because its a hot-sexy phone ;P
Nice overclocking there though X10 watercooling systems now in development, expect another forum branch to open in XDA in the next coming weeks.
To my understanding the 2.6.29 doesn't support overclocking so setcpu shouldn't make a difference at all. The rubber case probably contributed to the heat retention but the heat likely is from the constant charging.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Try the JuiceDefender app and set it to turn off wifi and data when your screen is off or unless certain apps are visible, helps with battery and stops unused functions while your phone sleeps.

Try charging the phone while its off. Ive heard people say that their phone wouldnt charge past a certain point but after charging it whilst off it returned to charging back to 100 percent. I bought a new usb cable for my charger after the terminal end into the phone became deformed and my phone now charges ~3x faster but ive never had it get abnormally hot.

Its funny that anyone with the know how or has supposedly read these forums continue to pay for (or pirate!) apps that have no effect. WITHOUT UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER AND CUSTOM KERNEL OVERCLOCKING APPS HAVE NO EFFECT! Check the overclock option in JuiceDefender, this option is not supported! The developer of the app has apparently left out any notice that it doesnt work with our kernel so they can continue to make sales.

Using CM7? You must read this! (Correct post)

Ok guys. I have to admit, I was about to give up on CM7 due to battery issues and what seemed to be memory leaks progressively making my phone lag more and more throughout the day. I have found something some of you may not be aware of and I wanted to share this amazingly helpful kernel with you.
Using x99, Scary, and stock kernels regardless of governor I seemed to maybe get 8 hours of battery life with moderate to heavy use. I am proud to say, using bcnice20's kernel I have had my phone on for 9 hours with 60% battery life today. This is incredible, even with lighter use on the other kernels I had NOWHERE near this amount of battery left.
Most of you may not have seen this kernel because it isn't posted. (as far as im aware) Let me help you out. First, go into your Market and download Kernel Manager. There is a lite version in there that is free. If you have an extra buck or two donate to the developer for making a neat app where you can download kernels in a convenient place by downloading the pro version.
What you will be downloading is called bcblend SIO tinyRCU kernel. I have not tried VR tinyRCU kernel yet. Not sure what the differences are, if someone could elaborate that'd be appreciated.
Regardless, I find the sweet spot for this to be at 245MHz min and 1GHz max on Interactive governor to work really well. The phone does not seem to get laggier throughout the day and consistently performs well, snappy, and just way better than the other kernels. (No offense to x99 and Scary, I appreciate all you've done!)
Give it a try and let me know if you all have similar results! I have heard that AOSP gets less battery than Sense ROMs from people on this very forum, and this may be the kernel to put that little debate to rest.
Oh, and be sure you have the latest CM7. I am on 7.0.2.1 trying this out.

Since CM7 lets you change governors right in its settings I uninstalled SetCPU for now, in theory I would think it would cause more battery drain but I don't know for sure. But yes I just changed it right in CM7. I changed the governor to interactive and set the max cpu frequency to 1036MHz.
Gonna try this out. I love CM7 but the battery is killing me. I pray this works.
Android system & cell standby seem to be the battery use culprit. I will give this a try though but don't really think its in the kernel. Ill report back...

This kernel seems to be really good about not sucking the battery while on standby for me, that seems to be the crown jewel of it all. Right Now I am at 14 hours off the charger with 29% left.. remember I was lucky to get 8 hours most days before using this kernel.
This is off-topic, but along the same lines: which kernels gave the best battery life for Sense?

It seems to be true. I'm def getting better battery life. I also calibrated my battery but I've done that before without any major change. So far I have 5 hours of quite a bit of use and I'm at 71% I would normally be around 55-60% by now. I wonder what the main difference is with the kernel...

After flashing numerous ICS ROMS lately, I always seemed to have one major complaint. No matter which on I tried my Battery wouldnt seem to last more than 8 hours or so. Well, so far it's gone down only 6% in the last 6 hours with moderate use. here's what I've done (on Doc's Master ICS v5 Final, icyGlitch v14 b5).
***if anyone already has this listed somewhere, I apologize. I tried to find a post telling what to change and i couldnt so this is what i came up with***
1. set min/max cpu to 400/1000
2. use glichassV2 scaling gov
3. ns tools: active scheduler set to fiops
And I must say, Doc's Master V5 has easily got to be the BEST all-round ROM I've tried BY FAR!!! Vibranturk has damn near perfected this stuff.
Don't know if this is going to help, but appreciate you posting it. I have decent life on AOKP Build 26 with icy Glitch v14b5 with CPU set to 100/1300, Glitchassv2, default scheduler, and the 1800mAh battery. But if this helps squeeze a little more out, then all the better. Right now I get about 12 hours with moderate usage.
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.
I'm running TeamHacksung's build 16 and the main thing I've done for battery life is to customize the screen brightness levels. I had battery drain issues on it the first time I flashed, but I think it was because something I had done. I odin'd back to stock and reflashed CM7 then the TH 16, everything has been really smooth. I'll have to try out the changes you mention here to see how it goes... I'd love to be able to get the same or better battery life and more performance.

well, i made it to 12 hours. but about a solid hour and a half of that was playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit so i imagine w/o that i couldve got quite a bit more life out the charge.
I had to turn the deep idle off when it came time to charge or it wouldnt charge correctly. and, for some reason it keeps saying that its 100% charged after just a short time. after a reboot the real percentage shows up.
You guys are on GLITCH kernel im guessing to get Glitchass v2 governor?
I shall try this for Euphoria today.
Can't believe i'm saying this but it truly does work. Usually after school my battery would go to a crawl to about 20% today it stayed up about 50% REALLY fantastic standby life.
Thanks OP
x66, if you want to get even better battery life, go into the display settings, in the Backlight settings, and you should be able to edit the 'Other Levels'... Bring those down a bit if you haven't already and you'll get even better battery life as you won't be using as much juice on your screen. Has worked out really well for me.

I am on AOKP M4 and I cannot find that setting... but its cool i'm getting amazing standby life.
Ok, so i tried the op's settings, and i unplugged 3 hours ago, and I'm still at 100%.... I dunno if it's a battery reading bug, but if it's not...wow!
Also, since doing this tweak, i got an upload speed boost....i dunno if it's related..
Screenshots attached
Edit...it was a reading bug....it was a battery reading bug...i was actually down to 50....but the speed tests....still dunno how i got such high upload speeds.

Best setup for battery life in MIUI V4?

I'm currently running 2.4.6 along with nyan colonel 4 but so far I'm not too pleased; I'm getting about 5-6 hours with medium use on a 1800 mAh battery.
Try turning off 3G (mobile data) when not in use. I was getting 6-7hrs w/ it on & now I can squeeze out 12-15hrs. However I left it alone it went 30 some odd hrs w/ only 30mins of screen time though.

Nuh uh, that's not gonna fly in this thread. I shouldn't have to be turning off my data to get any semblance of decent battery life. I really do want to get this to work though; I love MIUI. Unfortunately it seems the GB version will never be complete as everyone jumped ship to ICS and the ICS version is awesome but seems to get crap battery life even on 4.0.4
you dont HAVE to turn your data off....but if you wanna save some battery that is one of the best ways. if your phone is in your pocket and you dont need it, why have it on suckin juice....try juice defender, i use it with any rom i run and it helps...play with uv in nstools, just dont go too crazy with it.

Uh lol? He just gave you the best tip and you turned it down, you must not be interested in improving battery life, if you're constantly using data and have over 2hrs of screen time you're asking for crappy battery life, and unless you are always receiving important emails, you really don't have a reason to run it 24/7, if you're to lazy to turn it on and off, just use juicedefender, and it'll do it for you. You'll have to make some sort of sacrifice, whether it be monetary or personal. Phone usage is everything, get a bigger battery. Also, logging out of social networking apps when you aren't using them helps as well. I find I have very nice battery life on MIUIgb

I know that turning off data can save me battery life. That's not the point of this thread. I figured it was implied I was talking about different kernels and versions of MIUI V4, not the way I use my phone.
On that note, what's your setup with MIUI GB? I've been considering going back but I'm turned off by MMS STILL being broken
Sorry dude but that's the wrong question to ask. By now u should know that every phone is different if its what kernel to use & what setting to use this or that app than its simple trial and error. When we were still on froyo I couldn't use one of the very popular kernels bcuz it drained by better like crazy it took me a few weeks but I found the perfect setup to get good battery life. & sorry for misunderstanding your intention for this thread.

Alright.. well I misunderstood, it mighta been better to include that in op but it's whatever now lol, I'm using shadowkernel MIUI, and... 100-800Mhz governorndemand, schedular: Sio. And yes MMS has actually been a pain in the ass today for me, I'm considering going to AOKP again lol. I will apologize if I sounded rude in the previous post though, I didn't understand where you were coming from.

Is dropping down to 800 MHz noticeable as far as performance goes? Also is MMS the only problem you have with MIUI GB?
