Now that the netflix app is officially out for android (but only for supported phones), is there any way to make it work on the Shift before it's officially a supported device?
Using the attached apk, which is the market release, I can log in and view my queue. I haven't gotten a video to work yet, but I'm in the process of checking.
tldr;
App works on Evo Shift, so far. I am on CM 7.3.1 running ScaryKernel 1.8.
Edit:
Unfortunately, I cannot get a movie to play. I can choose a movie and it goes to the red loading screen but the movie will not start. Loads to black screen with a second of noise then crashes back to the Netflix app home screen.
There is the possibility that my data connection is at fault. I have no wifi connection where I am and my 3G speeds are lackluster here in mid-Michigan. I will try more later when I have a steadier connection.
Ok. The apk I had found wouldn't load, thought it was an issue with compatibility. But it looks like it'll work with the version you posted, thanks.
It doesn't quite seem to work to play videos. I can hear sound, but no video. I tried it on 3G and on the WiFi here at work (26 down).
Same issue here on 4g, 3g, and wifi. It seems to do everything except streaming. The video and audio begin to load and then crashes.

i got it working on my rom. gotta have flash 10.3. only issue is volume kinda low. looking for a fix for that.
What ROM are you using?
I'm using CM7 and it doesn't work and I have flash 10.3
Just get audio, no video and quits out after ten seconds
I'm using MIUI and adobe flash 10.3, no dice. App opens then just sits on a white screen.

Mind posting your methods for getting the app to work?
http://techland.time.com/2011/05/13/netflix-for-android-workaround/
1) Download ES File Explorer (Or any other root file editor) *** I used File Manager in Cyanogen Mod because ES File Explorer would not work
2) In ES File Explorer, go into Setting > Root Settings and enable both check boxes
3) Navigate to /system/ and copy/paste build.prop to /sdcard/ (just in case)
4) Open & edit /system/build.prop
5) Change the following lines to make your phone think it is an HTC G2:
--ro.product.model=HTC Vision
--ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
OR
--ro.product.model=Nexus S
--ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
6) Reboot the phone
7) Install the netflix apk (if you haven't already)
Enjoy

Enjoy Friends!!!
Anyone confirm this working? Does it affect anything else?
I can't get it to work. Every time I try to change the build.prop and then reboot, it reverts back to the original file. I got it to catch using ES, but it still doesn't work. I try playing, and it does the same thing as before. Sound (shaky), no video.
I did the mod to build.prop above (just the HTC Vision one since the other was already there) and checked that the flash was updated to newest version of 10.3.
It worked fine for me so long as I did not use the Resume on the first page after login and didn't try to skip to far forward during playback (just skip a little at a time or let it play through).
I used it on wifi in my house to play Ron White - They Call Me Tater Salad all the way through (a little under an hour) and played another while on 4G and had no issues other than those above. 3G seems worthless (maybe if you get a really good connection)...my usual connection is sloowww.
Overall - great video and sound...probably even better with a headset...
Edit: Evo(Shift)Nonsense 1.0 rom and no special kernel, just one with Nonsense rom. That being said, I can't address any failures in other roms because I don't know why mine works and others don't...
Also, I included my build.prop (editted with Notepad++ and named buildnf.prop) in the attached zip file...
PS - I have two versions of the build.prop file in my system folder, the original and the modified version and just renaming them back and forth seemed to work even without rebooting. Also, so far I haven't noticed any drawbacks to just leaving modded version in effect.

Could you be more specific about your Rom and Kernel and possibly upload your build.prop that works? Thanks.
I've tried editing my build.prop in every way possible that has been said to work and I cannot get anything to play for more than a second.
The video is loading, begins to play for a second, audio only, then crashes back to the Netflix home screen.
Sorry, meant to include this info in original post (I'll edit it too):
Evo(Shift)Nonsense 1.0 rom
no special kernel, just one with Nonsense rom.
(See first post above for build.prop file)

Its not broken, if you are on a gingerbread rom then that isnt supported by the netflix app on evos.. So u have to use the workaround, the supported devices list shows the requirements

Not sure why but I can't get Netflix to work. Changed the build.prop as suggested and only get about 10 of audio.. no vid. I'm running MIUI and don't really want to change ROMs, any suggestions?

I have it working on my girlfriends evo Shift. I did the g2 changes in her build.prop rebooted and turned on 4g thats it heres a pic of cheers it was the first thing that came up. it's a rooted stock evoshift. Havent got it working on my epic but since the nexus s requires 2.3 I'm resigned to thinking i won't have it till gingerbread.
can't post them though BAH!
EmperorX it worked forced closed and overheated a lot , after adding the HTC Vision to build properties it worked much better . Thank you very much .

I can confirm that it for sure works on the Nonsense ROM as stated by hdmunger.
I also used the mediaclient-1.apk found in this thread.
I also edited the prop build to HTC Vision
It did not work under CM7, but it DOES WORK UNDER NONSENSE ROM AND MEDIACLIENT-1
It isn't available in the market any more on my Transformer, and it lists a very specific set of devices for said support. I wonder if there is a way someone can hack this into a working state?
LOL Skype doesn't support video call for android except for the Thunderbolt haha. And devs have been trying to port that over for months but unsuccessful so far.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
No, there is an update today that changes the UI quite a bit and apparently adds video calling for the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia neo and Xperia pro. I copied the apk over to my TF and it works, but no access to video calling functions. I am wondering if I can trick it somehow.
Holy ****... The OP is right.
Skype has been updated to version 2.0.0.45, which includes video calling for selected devices (Nexus S and several others). It's no longer visible on TF in the market, but I updated it on my Galaxy S. It works on SGS, much better interface but no video calling.
Haven't tried this apk on TF yet, and I really hope someone can do something with it.
Edit: Beat me to it!
Gotta remember here.... "Android" doesn't really mean "Every device that runs every version of Android".
I believe there are some hardware issues to be solved to support front camera video on every device, you can't do it globally in one go for every android.
It appears honeycomb support is dropped at all, maybe they release a seperate version.
That's very strange, because I can find it in the market even if a lot of people said that it is no more available... but when I try to install it is saying that it's impossible to install in my device.
Is it normal to find in the market apps that you can't install?

I think you are referring to the online market while the others used the market app...
I just downloaded the app to my desire S and video called my friend , the video was actually pretty impressive. it started off a little pixelated but about a minute it in its was very clear and very responsive. the call was made over wifi.
happy.
Here is the info from the apk, if that helps. I tried changing my build.prop to match but after that skype just crashes.

I posted a working version without video calls on the previous page eh
Just a side question that I always want to ask.
How do you copy out the apk downloaded from the market your phone to the tablet?
(Like this Skype apk, its not longer visible for the tablet in the android market), but from your phone, you can download it from the market. Where its stored in the phone and how to copy it out?
Thanks for the info!
if you install appinstaller from the market it has a backup feature that stores your selected .apk file on your sd card in a folder called back up i believe. I'm sure there will be other back up apps out there but this one has worked great for me in the past.
Just got notified of a new Skype version on my tab. Seems like maybe they've allowed Honeycomb installs... anybody tried it?
Ye. Just installed. NO Video. Better UX imho

Forgive me if I've overlooked a thread somewhere, but I haven't found one that is quite like this. I'm also somewhat of a noob to XDA.
I had recently flashed the new Taboonay 2.0 HC3.2 ROM on my A500 which is based on the A501 HC3.2 ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138051
I also applied richardtrip's Villain 3.0 Kernel on top of Taboonay ("New 3.2 OC-UV kernel" link)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16944805&postcount=521
I had read a post by jm77 about the libnvomx.so file from a recent Transformer HC3.2 release
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16957501&postcount=22
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16958822#post16958822
Imagine my surprise when I rebooted after putting the new libnvomx library in and my camera didn't FC!! I fired up Netflix and it streamed!! Then I went to record my findings for a sanity check, and found that when I switched the camera from the front to the back, it FC'd like normal. Then the camera/camcorder apps would FC as they had before with all previous hacks.
I figured that it had to have something to do with the front-camera. I compared the preferences for the camera to that of my other A500 and found the setting that stored which one was in use last. I found that I could change the value in the XML file and get the camera app to start back up with the front-facing camera. As soon as it is switched over to the rear camera it would FC. Why? What is the difference?
Has anyone seen this before on previous Netflix hacks, or are we getting closer to cracking this nut? Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I was very excited - and am still happy to have a way to be able to take a picture without having to reset the libnvomx.so file back to the original.
I don't mind looking at myself - but it would be nice to have both cameras and Netflix working how they should.
Rear vs Front Facing Preference:
/data/data/com.android.camera/shared_prefs/com.android.camera_preferences.xml:
Code:
[..]
<string name="pref_camera_id_key"> X </string>
[..]
Where X is:
0 = Rear Camera
1 = Front Camera
Attached is the logcat at the time of the switch-over from the front to the rear camera with the new libnvomx.so file in use.

Not sure about the camera issue and libnvomx.so, but Netflix and Cameras work properly with the APKs in this post:

You're awesome jm77! Works perfect!
Thank you so much for pointing me to that post.......... Now to test all of the other "issues" with the prop change.
Patch is no different than before
Regular Camera works but Camcorder still force closes but yes netflix streams but the old patch worked as well.
I get no FC's at all, switching between camera, camcorder, front, back...it all works. The only problem I found was the streaming was upside down!! Then I realized I was holding the tablet "upside down"....*doh*....how do I report that bug???
Any thoughts on why I am still get the FCs

Same boat here. I figure I use Netflix more than the camcorder so until there is a fix, I will just live with it.

Am I correct in assuming that this causes my A500 to show up as a Xoom in the market? Running Taboonay 2.0 with richardtrip's kernel. Only other mod is the Netflix patch from above post.

It appears so. I see that now in my account profile settings - I have "My Devices" showing:
Unnamed Device Verizon Xoom - August 25, 2011 August 25, 2011
Unnamed Device Acer A500 - August 19, 2011 July 24, 2011
I do not see additional apps in the market, however.
In Settings, I now show up as below in the main about:
Model: Xoom
Android version: 3.2
Baseband version: Unknown
Kernel version: 2.6.36.4.HoneyVillian-1.1+
Build number: HTJ85B.US_epad-8.6.5.6-20010726
Where I had shown up with a Build number of "Taboonary 2.0 (4.015_COM_GEN1)" before the build.prop change (the defaults of the 1st post' combination).
I will note that build.props hack does kill the "Device Information" in Settings' About output. A fine price to pay to have everything "almost" all working: I can't seem to get the games included with the stock A500 ROM working even though I could with previous 3.2 ROMs.
You will also have to put up with the deception that your tablet has 3.g support until you modify the filesystem. Not really an issues as this sounds like it will be the same for any A500/A501 ROM. The Tools App included with Taboonay can easily help one to change their tablet into WiFi only mode. (Maybe a desire for someone with a USB 3g/4g aircard?)

And does your rear camera still force close for video since the netflix patch?
With this patch the camera no longer crashes , both video and still work and so does netflix.
still no rear camera
extract the file and use root explorer to replace it.

Seems like the latest Crackle update has resolved issues with the A500 not being able to display video. I have been waiting on this for a while. (sorry if this has already been reported)
Nice ive been waiting on this...i searched but cannot find the new app, nor the update. Care to share?
Since it is a free app, I'm assuming it is ok to share it here.

No video or sound for me, just black screnn.
I downloaded straight off the market.
Running taboonay 2.2 w/ richards 3.7.
Works but finicky on startup
Im running market version of crackle on stock 3.2.
Its kind of quirky.....if you open the app and choose your movie or show, you will then get a split screen. black screen with blue swirling circle at top and movie info at bottom.......when you see this just hit the home button to exit out of the app.
Then reopen the crackle app and wait a few seconds and the movie will start.
Tap on the movie to see the full screen button at lower right.
Works every time on my machine.
After getting the latest youtube update i noticed that there is an image in the middle of my screen. (I think its the screen mirroring image) and it will not go away and is annoying when watching videos
is there a way to get rid of it without having to uninstall the updates?

I think this might be the issue as well, I'm running the latest YouTube app and my screen mirroring icon is the proper location. Is there something preventing you from reinstalling the app? or perhaps clearing the it's cache and seeing if that fixes it.
I'm having this problem too.
It only occurs when using bluetooth speaker or headphones.
The icon is at the correct location when not using bluetooth though.
Any help?
