Will be buying Xformer - right choice? - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hi,
I have played with Iconia A500, Transformer and GT 10.1.
Since it will be a tablet to keep me running till next generation (and full video capabilities ) I have chosen to get 16GB Xformer + dock.
Is it right choice? I am hoping to sell it easily in future and that I will loose less on this set than on others tablets.

we cant really answer that for you.. its your own choice/opinion and if you want my opinion.. id say maybe a yes, cuz once again your in a transformer "sub"-forum and i probably would agree with you cuz you've choosen a TF? aka xformer?

To buy or not to buy...

Hello I am planning on buying a Honeycomb tablet and i have been looking at getting a Xoom. However I am worried that it's just ... not ready. Like I have been wanting to get a tablet for a while and I was waiting for a Honeycomb one. Now Do I get this, The galaxy tab 10.1 or an Asus transformer.
I know the hardware on these are almost similar so what I'm most worried about is support. I know the Galaxy tab will be getting touchwiz so it won't be updated as fast where as the Xoom and Transformer are running stock. Also I am new to android and may try rooting and would it be easy ( read not screw up on step 2 ) to do it to these tablets.
Finlay about my worry about it not being ready. I know the SD reader doesn't work (officially thank's guys for fixing it) and hopefully it will soon. Also the app ecosystem will it be expanding rapidly.
I would prefer to get one sooner rather then later but if I have to wait I will

I bought myself a Xoom a while ago and I have been very happy with it so far. There are a few bugs that happen every now and then but, it isn't something that effects things enough to have me stop using my Xoom. Overall, I'm very pleased with my Xoom. I was contemplating returning my Xoom and getting either the Transformer or the GTab 10.1 but, I'm going to stay with the Xoom because I want a tablet now and the Xoom is the best option at this moment. The Xoom just got a recovery so when the HC source is out there should be a good amount of development happening.
To answer the rooting question, rooting the Xoom was very simple. There is a one click root app in the development section which does all the work for you.
Hope this helps.
I won mine over from MyDroidWorld and I love it.
Was gonna wait and buy the Asus Transformer but heck with it.
I don't use my laptop much these days since getting the Xoom.
I went and installed Taimat 1.3.1 and it couldnt have been easier.
I used the one click root program. Rooted on my first try.
I would buy a xoom if you have the money. The Transformer looks great but there is no actual usb or hdmi on the tablet itself.
Yeah and no one really knows when the transformer will hit north american shores..
Galaxy 10.1 wifi hits store shelves in 7 weeks, has a better display panel and MIGHT have a better SoC. Also, there is no indication that Touchwiz will be ported to the tablet. All indications are that they are including "touchwiz" widgets and a few other slight theming modifications, so updating shouldn't be a problem.
Xoom is available now at most stores with full forums support.
Transformer NA release is still TBA.
Galaxy 10.1 has touchwiz, which will definitely delay the updates.

True the screen is better but the screen on my Xoom is perfectly fine for me. But, another thing to consider that I was truly weighing are codec support. The GTab 10.1 will most likely have most codec support for videos. I'd be surprised if Samsung doesn't put in their codec support. I love my Xoom but, now I'm becoming unsure again on whether the GTab 10.1 would be a better choice for me...

GT 10.1 or Transformer

I am in the market for my first tablet, and I think I have cut it down to 2 the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Transformer. What is your opinions on both, which would you recommend? I will be using the tab for movies, web surfing, gaming, you know average use. I do want to be able to root it and I do know the B70 and on models for the transformer cant be root yet.
Let me know what you guy think.
Well I just got my 10.1 today and I enjoy it so far... I almost got the TF but went with the GTab 10.1 due to the size! It is a lot lighter and for the aforementioned things I think you wouldn't be wrong in picking either but as far as carrying it around I think the 10.1 wins out!
I was also interested in the Transformer, but got the Galaxy Tab. I love it! So thin and light, and the screen is much brighter than the Transformer I looked at. I do love the keyboard for the Asus and the ports. I wish the Tab had more ports rather than the proprietary connector, but am glad with my purchase. I bought the Samsung keyboard dock and love it too. Also, I think Touchwhiz is an upgrade to Honeycomb. I can't believe I'm saying that, but I think it makes it better.
Take it from someone who had a transformer and a 10.1 at the same time. Go with the galaxy tab. I only now have the galaxy and couldn't be happier.
The asus doesn't have an oleophpbic coating which in my opinion is a deal baker. I would go to show it to someone and the thing was so smudgy and gross no one wanted to touch it. Deal breaker.
Also the build quality on the asus isn't up to par, the copper trim flaked off very easily and it had massive light bleed. The thing seemed thin and compact when I first got it but after getting my galaxy tab it made the asus look like a boat.
Can't go wrong with a 10.1 on a modded rom!
I was in the same boat, too. I went back and forth, and I was ready to purchase the Transformer because of the price even though I prefer the design of the Tab.
Fortunately, I found a deal on the GT which removed the only benefit the TF had (for me), and it will be here tomorrow.

I agree with this. I was (pretty much like everybody here) looking to get the galaxy tab 10.1 or Transformer but I am happy with my decision of getting the tab. Although seeing the S1 and having it as an option while shopping for a tablet I would definitely consider the S1 as my tablet of choice.
Go to a store and TRY THEM OUT. That's what I had to do. I wanted a transformer till I felt the GT in my hands

I've never had a problem buying factory refurbs. I know most times you get a reduced warranty, but I run an electronics repair shop so I'm not that worried. Best Buy has refurbs for $399.
Get the Galaxy tab. I had the Asus transformer and took it back to Best Buy (3 times). Each one had backlight light leakage. I tried the Sony tablet as well. It was a very nice tablet. I would be using it right now instead of the Galaxy. But the materials used with the Sony is awful. The front felt like plastic. Plus I didn't like the S curve design.
I have a transformer and its awesome. Asus has been great at giving us updates and official 3.2
I traded my never used iPad2 3G 16gb for the Asus and dock. I had offers for both but the lack of external memory killed it. The additional ports are awesome for hooking up external hard drives and USB devices such as 3G cellular cards and mice.
However I primarily just use it as a tablet. As just a tablet I might have preferred the Galaxy but I do use the additional stuff and it has saved me quite a bit. At least the option is there.
The Transformer 2 is coming out in October with the first quad core. Probably nothing to make me upgrade but if your looking to buy, Id agree with everyone else and wait a few weeks. Pick up a quad and be ahead of the times for a while.

October is rumored! There is no actual date yet. For all we know it will be next year before the TF2 comes out. I think it is stupid to wait this long to give a release date if it is October.. October is 3 days away and nothing.. Damn Amazon gave a date for the Kindle Fire which is going to be released in November.
The only thing holding back from buying a Transformer is not being able to root it.. I like to customize my devices.. The one big thing to the GTab is its easy to root. Tomorrow I will be going to BB to and ask to see what Transformers they have to look at all there serial numbers =P. If they dont have a rootable one.. Ill just wait or look hard at the GTab.
Ive owned both and got rid of the asus as too many build faults on my unit which others have experienced also ie creaking body work and a blown speaker also when i had it thee was an imbalance in speake levels also that may have changed howeve it had not on the 3.2update
In my opinion the tab is a bette finished tablet yes updates are not as fast as asus but the tablet impresses a lot more than the tf did, the its a tablet its a netbook docking show off i did got tiresome after the first few posings
I liked the asus at first ands its not a bad attempt but the tf 2 is meant to be out very shortly i would wait

I just returned a tf back to bb for a tab 8.9. Functionality wise it worked great but the speakers suck. To make it even worse the speakers are right where you put your hands in landscape. I would rather have the ports but they werent that important to me. As soon as i picked up the 8.9 i fell in love. The size is damn near perfect. Ive always felt that tablets were too big to hold but this thing feels way smaller yet the screen doesnt. Touchwiz is a very nice bonus and you get earbuds in the box. Its only $20 to add a usb port so no big deal.
If you get a chance go put your hands on a tab 8.9.
I'd say skip all the Tegra 2 based tablet as the new generation tablets are coming very soon. It's just not worthy to get it at this moment.

I have a Transformer and my wife has a GT 10.1. If I didn't need the keyboard dock for mobile writing, I'd opt for the GT. Not only does it feel better in hand, but Samsung surprised me with the job they did with TouchWiz on the tablet. I'm actually a little jealous of my wife in the this case.

Transformer Prime

Hey guys, the Prime specs have just been released, is anyone contemplating getting the Prime? Asus has so far has a good track record with updates and also the Prime is going to be getting ICS. Will you be keeping your Xoom? Or will you be trading it in for the new quad-core tablet? I love my Xoom and it will only get better with the ICS update and the source released so the devs will truly be able to do their magic but, the Prime looks pretty good and its tempting seeing as it lines up with Christmas.
Link for the specs.
I personally will be holding onto the Xoom until further notice. The Prime is only the first of many quad core tablets lined up for release, like how the Xoom was for Honeycomb. I am a hardcore Droid fan since the launch of the OG Droid, thus I will get a quad core tablet when Motorola launches theirs. I have been waiting very patiently for a quad core tablet since late last year, and I can hold out awhile longer knowing the great ones are on their way.
As tempting as the Prime is, I can control the urge to buy. The Xoom can be overclocked quite high without terrible loss in battery life, and it zips along with great speed. No worries for me!
I need Verizon LTE so no upgrade for me until a quad core LTE table launches.
Holding out for something better. I want to see more ram in the two to four GB range and a higher definition screen .
these arguments are exactly what is kind of preventing me from getting a prime. Also the fact that development will be slow and that the full potential of the prime may not be unlocked until other tabs pop up later... Also in the games arena, tegra3 dedicated games may not come out for a while if at all? so just cuz you have a quad core, you may still only get the same user defined power as our xoom (not sure on that this is my own assumption at present)
Well it looks like my xoom is going to be like my alienware m9700. Old as dust and still kicking butt! I just don't see enough of a performance jump in the tegra 3. Shadowgun plays just as smooth on the xoom, so do videos. I want to see a tablet that supports USB burners, hdd, printers, and everything else my laptop does. Without a damn keyboard!!! I can do everything with my xoom except burn dvd's.

i'll use my Xoom until it can't perform as good as I need it too..
I am not doing anything massive with my Xoom so I imagine it will be kicking along until Android x.x won't install on it anymore.
I'm finding it hard to resist the Prime tbh. I'm a bit of a gadget freak and I really like the look of the Prime. That said, I'm sure my Mrs would go ballistic if I bought another tablet before I'd had the Xoom even a year...!

BTT:
Well, I never liked Asus-products' look and feel (lol @ the transformer) and I can't think of a real benefit right NOW. So I'll wait for something "better" ...
NO LTE, no Tablet for me
I love the specs on the Prime. It's like a Xoom only better in just about every way (not to say that I don't already love my Xoom) but until they make a LTE version I won't be buying. I am not going to hassle with Tethering or have to wait until I have Wi-Fi. When I really use my tablet is when I am not at home or not at work and often traveling.
I would love the faster Browsing speed though, Quad Core with LTE = kick butt browsing.
Dan
The Asus Prime is very competitively priced. It's actually the same price as the first TF 32GB when it was announced, and it'll probably be lower than the Xoom2 10" at 32GB. A little surprising for Asus, who were positioning themselves as a premium brand. Then again, it's hard to buck the $500 ceiling set by the iPad.
Nice to see the price competition. Although personally I'm not a fan of the hybrid package, and the Prime's ergonomics is wanting. But it looks great, which is what matters.
I'd like to see performance benchmarks vs OMAP4, and also the rooting issue. Some of the Asus TF B70 stepping models (going back since August) still haven't been rooted.
>I would love the faster Browsing speed though, Quad Core with LTE = kick butt browsing.
If you need a quad to web browse, then the problem is the OS & software, which for Android at the moment is still kind of true.

Hey, that's a good idea. The Mrs might not be so angry if I give her the Xoom. Although... just thinking here... she'll probably make the argument that she should have the lighter of the two. Hmm. This will require some thought.

Simple answer though... because I'm paying for it.
Now... whether that would work...?
I about to sell my xoom, and waiting for Prime. But then, i -rethinking that i bought my xoom for $530.If i want sell it now, i would lose around $200. It's not worth. So i guess i keep my xoom, waiting for ICS. And i'll buy a new Window 8 tablet.
I hope Tegra 3 can play any video you throw at it without the need to convert. It may be worth to upgrade to one if I have the money to do so.

That's one of the reasons I'm considering the Prime.
I assume you're talking about hi-res and not just file format? MX Player Pro's codec package will play about any file format on my Xoom without the need to convert.
But the Xoom doesn't have enough power to play hi-res MOV's. Maybe the Tegra 3 will .... we'll see.

advice :/

Today on black Friday I picked up a Toshiba thrive and Acer A100 tab. They're both nice. I have an ipad 2 (got for work) and a my touch 4g. I've been wanting an andoid tablet for my own and now I'm torn between the two. Any suggestions / advice? There is no need for either, I just want one or the other lol. I just want an opinion on both. Thanks..
Toshiba sucks with updates. They need to step it up a notch. But if you want portability then Acer. You feel foolish whipping it out in public.

Really depends on what you want. The Thrive comes out of te box with all the port support and ability to use full size SD cards up to 128GB. Not as small as the A100, but more flexable. If you really think you will get an answer on a forum, it is unlikely. You really need to look the two over for yourself and decide which fits your need and go with it. Asking on a forum will get you biased answers or people that will just get on to trash a device.
It is your money and your choice. I personnaly like the Thrive, but that does not mean it is for you.
I agree with Paul make your own choice, asking on a forum is a waste of time and you get some of the most uninformed answers. I have the thrive and have to say it is great, I had a Acer Iconia,a Motorola Xoom a Samsung and a ipad 2 and all were returned and I now have a Thrive. It is your hard earned cash,do not leave the decision to someone on a forum do it yourself!!

Acer Quality

I don't know if anybody here has heard, but Acer just teased a new tablet, amazing sounding one, to say the least, and I was just wondering everybody's opinion of Acer's build quality, and how well they update their devices currently, and just the overall performance that you get out of this tablet.

To answer your question Acer has good quality for the bucks in your bank. I like Acer as this is my fist Acer product matter in fact the only complaint I have is the microphone it stinks.. but if they have fixed that which I'm sure they have ill be sure to pick this up!
Thanks for the link!

Mic isn't bad at all, just not very loud... Some voice chat programs (including skype and gtalk, unfortunately) mess things up, though, giving you weird background noises (not on all devices, though, it works for me). Other than that, the Acer devices are very well worth their money.

If you Google Acer A700 you'll see that the specs on that tab have been out for awhile. I'll be waiting to see if Acer delivers ICS to this tab first. If they drop support on this tab, there's no way in h3ll I'll be purchasing another Acer tab. If they do give us ICS on our tabs, I'll be grabbing the A700, as it seems it's going to be the best "bang for the buck" among the 2012 tabs

I agree 120% with this .. I have a birthday coming in MAY .. Giggles..
if my a500 does not get the support it should.. i might just wait and get a win 8 arm tablet.. and Dual Boot it .but there is always battery issues with windows . we will see what the tech word brings us in 2012.. for now my a 500 meets all the HAVE to have needs.. as if i really NEED a tablet.
Acer always seems to be giving the best bang for your buck, whether it is laptops or not tablets.
One gripe I have against acer is their bloatware. Some may like it but others (like myself) can't stand it.
Also keep in mind that acer is releasing the A200 soon. It's pretty much the same spec wise as the A500 but apparently has no rear facing camera. The pricing looks quite attractive though. I'm still happy with my A500. I actually have no desire to replace it with something newer and better, and I usually drool over the latest and greatest in technology.
I've had an a500 since november and the build quality is great. They have been providing adequate updates so far, and I expect them to provide ICS, but we will see.
Ive been wanting to get a second tablet bc my daughter always has this one and wouldn't hesitate to buy another acer.
Other than build quality ill be looking at development on market app as well as on xda
Gameloft and other game developers choose a500 as a flag ship for development another reason I choose this tablet over Asus, Samsung, and Mototrola. I contacted Gameloft before I picked up a 10.1 tablet around September and asked them what tablet to pick up they told me Acer Iconia because Acer has been the only company that was helping them out the most with developmental needs.. so of course when I went to best buy they were out of a500s and I had 300 bucks from trading in my Droid incredible and I didn't want to wait so I picked up the thrive because of the nice stuff included with it.. but ended up having nothing as far as xda & others so picked up tf101 loved it but it kept slipping out of my hands.. lol so bestbuy finally called me to tell me the Acer was in so I picked it up answer fell in love with it. So that my awesome story and we lived happily ever after
So I will most likely pick up Acer if top devs do aswell.

Thanks for the replies guys! I still have plenty of time to think this over. Acer is definitely a huge choice now though, and I like this community, way friendlier than the original Asus Transformer. Back before the Prime came out, I made a thread like this, asking about Asus and what to expect in the tablets, and it was immediately hostile responses. Terrible, but glad I didn't have enough to buy that Prime, so much bad reports about it. My choices are now this A700, thanks to your responses and some research, and the Asus TF700T.

The Acer bootloader does some checksumming and stuff that makes rooting hard on the newer FWs, but there's a rooting method around that works (downgrading isn't much of a problem). As has been said, just use the search.
Alright, I was just wondering though, different company's products usually have completely different rooting methods than others; I've only ever rooted all my HTC phones, but thanks.

Just thought some would find this info helpful..
UPDATE: Looks like this is indeed the A700. The folks at The Verge managed to find the new Iconia Tab lounging around in Vegas and discovered that it's packing a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the aforementioned 1080p display. It's also got Bluetooth support, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI port. As far as release details go, the A700 is said to be landing sometime in the second quarter, but no other specific launch information is known just yet.
