[Q] Newb Question: Which Roms?, etc..... - EVO 4G General

Hello all. Yes I'm a Newb here and to Rooting phones, etc., but I've been doing a lot of reading and lurking here. I'm a Masters Degreed Airline Pilot and been building computers for over 20years. So not completely new to technology, but I would like the opinion and advice from those of you who have been at this much longer than me.
I have a original EVO and so far have backed up my phone (v2.2), written down all my hardware/software info, made a copy of my WIMAX keys (as recommended on this forum) and have already rooted my phone with Unrevoked3 (clockwork recovery). Have installed Titanium Backup (paid) and created another backup of my settings and apps. So at this point looking at flashing a ROM/kernel and trying to decide on a good one to start that has some potential to load one of the many themes on this forum. What would you suggest?
I can go Sense or not. What I use my phone primarily for is:
- On call at work so stability is important
- Gmail/Yahoo Mail
- Flight Tracker & Weather apps (hey I'm a pilot!)
- Google calendar
- Texting
- Tethering to the laptop (so having 4G is important)
- GPS functions
Where would you start regarding a ROM/kernel? I've been looking at CM7, Gingerbread EVO deck, & VirusROM.
My phone currently has 2.2 Build 3.70.651.1 / Hardware v0003
I like performance (speed baby!) & a clean, professional looking OS.
Recommendations? Thanks to all that contribute here. A great wealth of info!

Right now, I would endorse the one I'm using, Mik 1.01. It's fast, clean, has all the options I'd want and very very stable.
Excellent job on the research you've done and steps you've taken so far!

I'm using the Evo Deck rom and my phone has never performed better, and I've been flashing roms for about 9 months now Looks like you've got all the basics covered and you're ready to go!

I'd recommend the MikG rom. I flashed to it last week after I found out that the new GB update still used sense 1.0 . The rom is clean and fast; on top of that, there is a ton of support with updates coming out quickly and regularly. it has sense 2.1 with some things from sense 3.0 which are great. link is below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038967

Thanks for the recommendations so far guys.

I'll tell you, I spent 3 days pouring over the Ginger-Sense ROMS, reading everyone's experiences with them, etc and in the end I chose Mik's because of a), best reports of stability and fewest issues, b) The Dev's excellent reputation and C) it contained everything I was looking for.
Once Synergy is released, I will be flashing it to compare and whichever suits me the best will be my daily driver.

Yeah u look educated on this stuff I personally like decks cm7 but I suggest u flash a rom or two and try them out...u can easily switch between roms and as long as use titanium backup to store apps only u will b set back up quilkly...happy flashing
Quick warning -- don't restore system settings between different roms it will mess up only restore apps and data for apps in titanium backup and u golden

In Titanium backup it gives the option of "Backup all user apps" and another option to "Backup all user apps & system data". Is it safe to backup and restore apps & system data or just the apps?

Don't backup any system data unless the ROM your flashing is the same one you just wiped, I did it in my noob days, everything force closes constantly.

Try Deck's or myn's Rom.

Dumb question but after flashing the ROM and rebooting will the new ROM have problems with the programs, data, etc that's on on the SDcard?

No, not at all....

Thanks. I take it that the new ROM will read and use any apps on the SDcard but I'll need to "restore missing apps" using titanium backup those apps that are stored on the phone itself?
Well I'm down to the decision of MikG or Myn's 2.2 ROM ????

Correct again. When you run Titanium, just select Restore All Apps With Data, then toggle the check boxes for your actual apps, and not the system apps.
it's pretty easy to tell, they'll be in white lettering.

Perfect! Thanks.

I'm probably misunderstanding that you're misunderstanding this, but just in case...
When you move an app to your SD card, it only puts part of the app there. When you do a factory reset, flash a new rom, get a new phone, whatever, the app won't automatically be there just because you moved it to your SD card. You'll need to redownload or restore it.
However, the part that was moved to the SD card does stay there unless you wipe it. You don't want to leave those pieces there, so you'll want to be sure to wipe SD-ext and .android_secure if you move apps to the SD card. These are options in Amon Ra recovery, but unless ClockworkMod has changed, you won't have those options. You can use a format all zip, just be sure it's edify scripted if you plan on sticking with ClockworkMod.
I also suggest switching to Amon Ra because it wipes more thoroughly and there are more wipe options, it's both edify and amend compatible, you have more control over your nandroid backups, and the options/menus are more nicely placed and easier to understand. If you do switch to Amon Ra, be sure to do another nandroid backup since backups made with ClockworkMod can't be restored with AR and vice versa.
There's nothing wrong with Clockwork, aside from amend scripting errors it never gave me problems. I just prefer Amon Ra, and I think you'll find many others do too.
Again, I probably misunderstood what you were saying about apps on the SD card, but more information can't hurt.

What would happen if I copied all the contents of the internal memory (all files ,all folders) then copied those over the contents of the new phones internal memory?. Nandroid and TB are not normally saved to the external SD card.
Or should I just load the new rom on the new phone and just copy the TB folder to the new phone and restore from that?
Nandroid and titanium are a good start but neither of those will do things like modem files.
So I would add on the new phone do a base install of fusion 1.1 with the appropriate kernel, i think you said was your rom, then a nandroid restore and that should get you there

I'll chime in with my opinion. Granted my opinion comes from my experiences constantly experimenting with different roms. I've flashed the phone this month almost as often as I've received actual phone calls for crying out loud!
The amount of time expended on looking for such a perfect method seems to be greater than the amount of time spent merely reconstructing an equivalent environment.
Keeping all of my contacts on google and using appbrain to have the ability to keep a known inventory of apps...I can reconstruct my daily driver environment from one rom to another in about 30 minutes max without the need to explicitly backup anything.
Though this may not work for everyone, it surely would work for most. Just a thought...
Using AppBrain would mean you would have to constantly re-download your apps. Also, this does not save the settings and what about apps that are not on the market?
I use Titanium Backup if I want to transfer all my apps and settings. Nandroid would be very appropriate to transfer over all the of phone's data, granted you also manually include the correct modem and kernel.
Doing a Titanium Restore surely takes less time then redownloading and installing from the market, especially if you have the Pro version as it is MUCH MUCH quicker.

Titanium can save some time, but honestly not enough to write home about, at least for me. It's a matter of a few minutes different in my experience.
The reason why I do not use Titanium, despite the fact that it can save some time is that it can lead to complications especially when bouncing between 2.1 and 2.2 derivative roms, depending on what you back up of course. I'll use it when I'm staying within the domain of 2.1...or staying within the domain of 2.2. Crossing those domains however I never use Titanium. I've had more problems than not, and admittedly that may be due to my ignorance of what things are truly safe to restore across different versions of Android.
Then again I'm probably unusual compared to the OP, in that I experiment with EVERYTHING, up to and including a little bit of my own firmware cooking after the fact. Every firmware and experimental firmware and filesystem hack has at some point been on this phone, but that's how I roll.
Doing without deliberate backups hasn't drastically changed my restore times. Setting up the few apps that require setup takes a matter of seconds when I decide to use that app.
It's nice to get a fresh install - just TB and and reinstall after!

if you want exact - nandroid
otherwise use TitaniumBackup Pro
This is what I would do. I would perform a nandroid. After doing so I would then copy everything in the internal sd to your computer. When the new phone comes. Copy everything into the new phone's internal sd. Root your phone, install clockwork mod. Flash a new rom if you want if not no biggy. Load up into clockwork mod, do an advanced restore, restore data only. Reboot. Reboot again. Load back into clockwork mod, clear cache and dalvik. Reboot twice. Run fix permissions. Reboot. Everything should work with no errors and it will look identical to your last vibrant. You could condense this but I wrote it so that you could install buncha diff roms without having to do titanium restore because that just takes a ****ing long time if you have a **** load of apps installed.

Hey rancome7 - did you try this method? How did it work for you.. I may just do this right now as im in the same situation of wanting to clone my Vibrant to a new Vibrant
Question - wont restoring data from a nandroid after installing a new ROM cause the rom to act funny since the old data may not agree with it or overwrite something?

For Dummies - Rooting and updating to custom ROM images

Executive summary:
To update to a custom System ROM Image, it is best to have a flexible Recovery Image, for which you need Root (Administrative) access

Click to collapse
1. You need to get root (super user) access on 3.0.1
GingerBreak 1.2 http://androidflip.com/how-to-root-acer-iconia-a500-with-gingerbreak-v-120/
2. Install "Root Checker" from the Android Market (run it to verify that you do have root access). (All such Android Market apps can be installed onto your device via your PC. Visit website, select install, select device, click ok, check connected device)
3. Install "Busybox by Stericson" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install busybox.
4. Install "Acer Recovery Installer" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install a CWM Recovery image (don't use the stock recovery image)
5. Do a backup of your current System Image (because your country-specific factory ROM may not be available on the Internet in case you decide to revert)
Advice from Achristocat: use ClockWorkMod's (a.k.a CWM) backup function (CWM itself is a seperate entity as compared with ClockWorkMod Recovery)
Alternative Advice from rquinn19: Do a nandroid backup (TBD - I am not familiar with this)
6. Backup current android apps (TitaniumBackup -> "Backup all user apps + system data", or alternatively use Astro file manager's tool)
Advice from Euclid's Brother: use "Titanium Backup" which saves the data with it (ie. you don't lose your custom app settings or even your progress in Angry Birds, etc).
You can use the Internal SD card (/mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup or /mnt/sdcard/backups) to store/restore backups as long as you don't do any partitioning.
7. Pick a ROM image (I chose Virtuous Galaxy, there's Dexter's Iconia Px, Virtuous Picasso, Taboonay, HoneyVillain etc). Boot into Recovery image to flash the System image - "Booting into recovery" means to power up with VolDown + Power Buttons pressed (VolDown is the volume button closest to the power button)

Advice from FloatingFatMan: You cannot flash ROM from internal memory. You can use external SD or a USB stick
8. Restore android apps: TitaniumBackup -> "Restore missing apps with data" and "Restore all system data", or Astro file manager's tool
If your System image is already rooted, along with CWM Recovery in place, and you just want to try a new ROM, you only need steps 6, 7, 8.
Extras:
1. Install "Drive Mount" from the Android market for accessing NTFS USB hard disks
2. Install "LCDDensity for Root" from the Android market for changing LCD density. Default = 160. Lower value (e.g. 120) implies smaller widgets
This should be useful for the new users or even experienced users that are new to this device.

I used the backup from CWM...

I booted into recovery and navigated to backup.
Flashed a couple of ROM to check 'em out which worked, but they both still had enough flaws that I wanted to go back to "where I had been"
Booted back to CWM - Restore from backup...
Super Easy...

One quick (and possibly stupid) question; do I *need* to have a micro SD card in the tablet to install new ROMs? I haven't got a spare one as ~16GB storage on the Iconia is enough for me
If I must do the ROM install from an sd card, I can use the one in my HTC Desire, but I'd rather just do it from the Iconia's internal memory if possible.
You should instruct people to do a nandroid backup somewhere in there before flashing something new.
Mods should sticky this

I used an external SD card, following the instructions in the video. For internal flash, we need confirmation from someone else.
Agree on the "do a nandroid" before flashing the first rom. I flashed one and didn't do one and now I can't go back to stock. Not a big deal for me, but I should have done it.

4. Install "Acer Recovery Installer" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install a CWM Recovery image (don't use the stock recovery image)
[ig9] There are two choices, is one better than the other? I chose Thor's
5. Do a backup of your current System Image. Recommended so that you can revert back completely to the factory image that was shipped to you.
[ig9] This is NOT optional! One day you will apply a ROM that will completely screw up your system. In these early days, do a nandroid/recovery backup of each ROM version so you can get back to your base configuration. Once new kernels start coming out you'll have to be careful about restoring a nandroid backup and which kernel is belongs with. For now, just do the backup. Once is good enough for each ROM version you want to be able to get back to. Further changes can be restored with Titanium Backup.
a) Boot into recovery.
b) Choose "backup and restore"
c) Choose "Full Backup"
Watch the magic happen
You can also (on other devices at least, not sure if it's working on the Iconia) do a backup from ClockWorkMod and it will let you give the backup a custom name. ClockWorkMod or CWM itself is a separate entity as compared with ClockWorkMod Recovery.
6. Backup current android apps (I used Astro file manager's tool)
Advice from Euclid's Brother and ig9: use "Titanium Backup" which saves the data with it (ie. you don't lose your custom app settings or even your progress in Angry Birds, etc).
Just pay for TB. It's worth the safety net that it provides.
a) Open TB.
b) In the preferences select at least 2 for "Max Backup History" though 5 is my fav. This will let you save at least that many versions of your apps and data and if an app update is broken you can always go back to a working version.
c) Choose "Backup/Restore" tab.
d) Open the menu and choose "batch"
e) Choose "run" next to "Backup all user apps + system data"
f) Choose "Run the batch operation"
Bask in the safety.
7. Pick a ROM image (I chose Virtuous Picasso, there's Dexter's Iconia P2-x, Virtuous Galaxy, Taboonay, HoneyVillain etc). [ig9] Don't watch the video. I hate watching videos. It always takes 5x longer than if I could just read the instructions.
1. User Acer Recovery to boot into recovery mode. That's what apps are for and you don't have to use the Iconia neck pinch to get into recovery. Use the big button.
2. If the ROM you're installing is meant to be an update, choose "install zip from sdcard", find the ROM and answer yes to the prompts.
3. If the ROM you're installing is a complete replacement, first do a "wipe data/factory reset" and then jump back to the previous step.
4. "go back" until you reach the main menu.
5. Choose "reboot system now"
Advice from FloatingFatMan: You cannot flash from internal memory. You can use external SD or a USB stick
8. Restore android apps using Titanium Backup or Astro file manager's tool. You only need to do the following if you did a factory reset.
[ig9] When restoring from TB do the following:
6. Open TB.
7. Choose "Backup/Restore" tab.
8. Open the menu and choose "batch"
9. Choose "run" next to "Restore missing apps with data" DON'T choose to restore ALL apps with data. You want to selectively restore system data.
10. Choose "Run the batch operation"
11. Once that's done go back to the main screen (restore will probably take you there)
12. Choose "click to edit filters"
13. Choose the "System" button and then choose "Apply"
14. Now go through all the green items and restore DATA ONLY. This will restore things like account settings, bluetooth pairings and wifi information.

Thanks for the guide!
I am pretty experienced with Android and flashing roms etc but I am running into a problem with the Iconia.
I successfully followed the gingerbreak rooting procedure and then installed ClockworkMod recovery via Acer Recovery Installer. I can boot into CWM recovery but when I get there, it can't see the SD card for backups or to install a rom. It says "kernel does not support usb storage."
I have tried two different USB cards so far. I also do not get the usual "Mount USB Storage" when I am connected to a computer, just Acer Sync which I am guessing is normal but the sync utility on my PC never finds the device. Astro file manager can see the sd card.
Can somebody help? I really want to install a custom rom.

[Q] CM7 - flashing for first time - have some questions

?= Question Not Yet Answered √=Question Answered, Thanks!
Been rooted for quite awhile now, but stuck with stock 2.2.1 at first. Now I'm ready to flash CM7, mostly because I'm sick of certain bugs and issues I've been having that I hope this will fix, and I have many questions. I have spent weeks reading various forums, reviews, instructions, etc. I like to do my research, but need some things better clarified. Please humor someone fairly new to all of this and answer as many as you can. Thanks.
√I have CWM Recovery 3.x right now, should I upgrade to the 5.x one?
√What's this Amon_Ra Recovery I've been seeing? Is it different? better?
√Should I start with CM 7.0.3 or jump right into the new 7.1.0?
√What kind of changes can I expect to see to functions and appearance?
√Will I still have all of the basic apps? i.e. camera, gallery, swype, bluetooth, gps, weather, calender, clock, etc?
√What about the T-Mobile specific things like MyAccount?
√Does it effect the Genius Button?
√I want to know what kind of work will be involved with getting my phone back to the way I like it and what kinds of things will be replaced(I assume with better apps) or removed all together requiring me to find replacements. I've tried to review the changelog, but quite frankly, I don't understand most of what it lists.
I use LauncherPro and Folder Organizer.
√Will all of that stuff still be there on my homescreens?
√Will I need to redo all of my settings, ringtones, wallpapers, alarms, etc?
Yes, I want to be rid of sense and use CM instead.
Yes, I want to be updated to GingerBread without waiting anymore for the OTA
No, I do not want to lose my customization, apps or anything else except the bloatware.
I have a full titanium pro backup of all apps and system files plus data.
I have a nandroid backup done through clockwork mod recovery.
My e-mail, calender & contacts should be backed up through Google.
I use SMS Backup & Restore for all of my texts and Handcent is the app.
I backed up my LauncherPro and my Folder Organizer.
I have the SD card backed up in full on my PC.
√Did I miss anything?
I read that I should wipe not just the phone but my SD card too and do a partition on it for Apps2SD.
√Do I wipe, partition, then just copy everything back to it?
√Is it better to do it while in the phone connected to the pc or pop it out and do it directly from the pc?
√Should I be using ADB for any of this?
I'm sure I will come up with even more questions as I continue to research and get answers to these, but thank you so very much to anyone willing to take the time to settle a new root user's overloaded brain. There is just SO much info out there, sometimes it is hard to make sense of it all and this forum has always seemed to me to be not just the most knowledgeable, but also the most willing to break things down and clarify things without judging a poster for being confused. Noobs like me appreciate that.

Thanks.
I have CWM Recovery 3.x right now, should I upgrade to the 5.x one?
What's this Amon_Ra Recovery I've been seeing? Is it different? better?
Should I start with CM 7.0.3 or jump right into the new 7.1.0?
What kind of changes can I expect to see to functions and appearance? Will I still have all of the basic apps? i.e. camera, gallery, swype, bluetooth, gps, weather, calender, clock, etc? What about the T-Mobile specific things like MyAccount? Does it effect the Genius Button?
I want to know what kind of work will be involved with getting my phone back to the way I like it and what kinds of things will be replaced(I assume with better apps) or removed all together requiring me to find replacements. I've tried to review the changelog, but quite frankly, I don't understand most of what it lists.

You should update clockworkmod recovery just to be on the safe side. I don't believe there is an amon_RA recovery for the MT4G. we only have Clockworkmod and ext4 recovery. I would personally go for clockworkmod.
Now as for which CM7 version, that depends on you. Do you want Android 2.3.4 (CM7) or Android 2.3.7 (CM7.1)? Both are pretty much the same, just a different base and minor changes.
When you flash CM7, you'll need to flash the gapps as well, since Google apps are not preinstalled. Instructions on the CM thread. But besides gapps, all the other stock apps should be there, (minus the bloatware). So like camera, phone, messages, gallery etc will all be there. Tmobile my account can be downloaded from the market for free.
THIS ROM DOES NOT INCLUDE THE GENIUS BUTTON FEATURE, THE BUTTON IS REMAPPED TO THE SEARCH FUNCTION.
Now as for apps and back ups, yes you will lose all data as you are required to do a FULL WIPE. but if you have already backed up apps in titanium backup then you should be fine.
NO NEED TO WIPE THE SDCARD, JUST THE PHONE. well, unless you want to eliminate all error. But I don't suggest you do it.
If you have any more questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Only swipe card if you are having issues that you can't solve. Is pretty low the probability that card gives you problems.
For your apps, you can back them up with another app, called titanium back up i.e.
Do not skip this line ! - do not restore your from your google account . That will always bring problems . once you flash the tom, skip the the logging and restore apps from titanium back up. Then log in and skip "restore" from your account in google .
Not too many people know this , and trust me, it will avoid a lot of issues with any ROM
I actually using MIUI and it is amazing. I unplugged my phone last might at 12, went to bed just woke up 1 hour ago and have.been checking emails, xda,,etc on my phone for 35 min and look at my battery

lol someone has lots of questions
but that's ok
really, android 2.3.4 and 2.3.7 don't have any BIG differences, or noticeable ones. base means the android version that the rom is based on/running on.
titanium backup only covers apps, all of the rest of the settings WILL BE ERASED, sorry. when you wipe the phone in clockworkmod recovery, you're basically doing a factory reset. doing a nandroid backup only back ups the CURRENT rom your phone is running right now, in your case, stock 2.2.1. the nandroid is used to go back to in case you need it.

√OK Thanks, so I should be able to find a list somewhere of Gingerbread features and that's what will be in the ROM? android 2.3.4 and 2.3.7 don't have any big changes, google it, and maybe you can find some screenshots.
you can't back up the phone, dictionary, android home, system app etc from stock MT4G and restore it once you are in CM7. the roms are totally different, the apps were made for HTC roms, and you are running AOSP.
once you install the gapps, yes, you can use titanium to restore your downloaded apps+data. BUT NOT SYSTEM APPS BACKED UP FROM YOUR PREVIOUS ROM.

Yes, like I've seen some ROMs that have listed features such as includes camera, calendar, messages, etc or what they have added like screenshot, apps2sd, etc But I can't seem to find anything like that for CM7. I've looked at the Changelog page but it lists everything like fixes and updates and tweaks, and a lot of it I don't understand. For example... it lists... Common: Camera timer - Danesh Mondegarian
√Does that mean it comes with a camera or just that it adds a timer to the camera app, but I have to get & install the app?
And this has to be an inside joke, right? Common: "eat" pushes fresh brunch/breakfast to device - Ricardo Cerqueira
Good to know about the stock apps. Thank You! I probably would have tried to restore everything if you hadn't said something. See, questions overload pays off LOL
√So once I flash the ROM, Should I actually re-download and reinstall my apps, will it find them automatically from the SD card, or do I have to restore everything from the backups?
√I saw you mention the VU ROM... I was looking into that one awhile ago before I settled on CM7. How do you like it? That's a Sense one, right? Much different from CM? How hard would it be to switch between them to check them both out?

UPDATE: I found a decent list here... http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html
oddly though, it only goes up to 2.3.4, no 2.3.7, but from what I could gather elsewhere the only main changes from .4 to .7 were for the Nexus S and Galaxy S, so I guess I need to look more at the difference between CM 7.0.3 & CM 7.1.0 to decide.
√And in that case 7.1 should just add on to whatever was already there in 7.0, right?
And OMG 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, looks amazing! I can't wait.

VU is AMAZINGGGG
Awesome battery life, smooth as butter, beautiful UI. better than CM7 IMO lol. VU is a Sense 3.0 Tom based off of the HTC Sensation.
VU is a LOT different from CM, since one is sense and the other is AOSP.
It wouldn't be very hard to switch between them and try both of them, just do the basics for both Roms:
1) MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
2) do a full wipe (DATA, CACHE, DALVIK CACHE)
3) flash rom.zip
4) reboot, wait patiently (first boot should take longer)
5) enjoy!
6) flash any other mods/tweaks/themes etc
7) hit the thanks button

Hmmm... My son and his girlfriend both have the Sensation. They love them. OK, I will definitely check that one out too.
Which is the current stable version to get? Do I still need the GAPPS?
I would love to see a side by side comparison chart of ROM apps and features. Can't believe no one has done one yet. Although I guess with all of the frequent updates to ROMs it would be a pain to maintain.
Thank you for answering so many of my questions, saranhai, you've been very kind and patient. Would you mind taking one more look through these posts and see if you might be able to answer any of the remaining ones with question marks? Thanks so much!

I'm hoping in addition to all of the regular added benefits of flashing a new ROM that these issues will be solved once and for all as well...
?So, knowing that, what do you think? Wipe the SD too?

for VU: if the genius button feature is not present, you can still use bluetooth and voice commands for google search. google search is pretty much the same thing as genius, maybe not as many features, but not bad at all.
all roms should include the stock apps, messages, camera, phone, calender, calculator, etc etc, and that includes CM7. i'm not so sure about the camera timer on CM7 though. really, it doesn't matter which version you install, though i would suggest CM7.1 because it seems more stable to me.
SDcard: if you are experiencing issues, then yes, wipe the SDcard and partition it. i would say that you pop out the SDcard and plug it into the computer, just to be on the safe side
you shouldn't need to be using adb for any of this.

Titanium Backup (root) 5.4.0-testX with JB support

Hi!
Here's a test version of Titanium Backup that adds:
Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" support
Backup/restore to a fully portable XML file (Pro): for browser bookmarks, call log, SMS/MMS.
New permissions required by the above feature.
Can save exported .TiBkp/.CSV files locally (Pro).
Improved backup speed.
Fixed bug with native libs when integrating system app updates on ICS.
MANY tweaks and bugfixes.
You can smoothly upgrade any TB version to this one:
Titanium Backup 5.4.0-test1 APK
Feedback is welcome, especially if you encounter FC or incorrect characters when backing up or restoring SMS/MMS. The XML is fully UTF-8 and can even be edited before restoring, so it should be fun! It's supposed to work across all Android versions and was tested between 1.5 and 4.1.
Enjoy!
Awesome! I'm not running JB 4.1 but I'll definitely give this version a go!
TB is a MUST have app on my device as I flash new roms like its my day job lol!
I appreciate all the work you've done with this application! It has saved my life more than once for sure!

I'm not seeing where the backup SMS portion is...
Thank you guys! It's a pleasure.
To access these features you need to hit MENU -> Backup data to XML... for now.
TB doesn't restore - going to try this Beta
I'm going to give this Beta a try - for some reason, Titanium Backup Pro will not restore previous backups on either my Samsung Galaxy S3 (Stock & Rooted) or my Galaxy Nexus (JB & Rooted). I performed most restores, Apps+Data, Sys+Data etc but nothing gets restored even though it looks like TB is actually restoring. I have my Backups on an Ext Card on the S3 & Int SD on The Nexus but still no dice. Any ideas on what's going on, TB use to be PERFECT, now the restores are totally unreliable - any help is appreciated BTW, I have my Backup location set to INTSDCard and my Restore Point to Internal SD

Thank you for the report. I have PM'd you. Hopefully this will get resolved shortly.
One thing I noticed, I just tested out backing up SMS/MMS .xml and chose to save file locally. If defaults to /mnt/sdcard/messages-date-time.xml and I attempted to change it to /mnt/emmc/TB-SMS/messages-date-time.xml but it threw an error saying it was unable to create directory...

Right, this is most probably because it didn't create the TB-SMS folder by itself. Try creating it manually and it should work.

Ok, I was wondering if that was the issue but as you can see from the screen shot I just added to my post, it doesn't even allow it to put the file in the root of emmc directory (which on my device is my external SD card)

Hmm, are you sure that apps have write access to the root folder of your emmc? Keep in mind that Titanium Backup is not using root access when writing these XML files...
Final version of TB 5.4.0 is released on Play Store now.

hey, my friend...i am getting a 404 error from Host gator...is there an alternative location? I am getting the same message that TB is not compatible with my rooted, stock TF101. I only got root yesterday after the ota to.27. Any ideas? Or alternately is there any other backup software that is remotely close?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
nvm...didn't see it had gone gold! thanks! I love tb!
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Hi ddseils,
Yes the 404 is because the test version was removed at the time the final one got released
Anything remotely close to TB? I'm afraid I can't answer this - unless you want a "slightly biased" answer. Haha
Sorry about the bogus "not compatible" errors on Play Store. Everything should be fine with the latest 5.4.0.2 version, otherwise please shout here!

There is nothing remotely close. There are simple backup apps. Nothing as thorough as tb, tho.
I just installed TB on new Galaxy S3 installed my old sd card and I have no batch mode with TB to do any restores. What am I missing?
There's an icon at the top right of the screen, which opens batch mode. If your top bar is in quick search mode you'll need to exit it first.
it was updated to 5.4.1.1 yesterday (as on my device) from Play Store, all functions working well on my i9220+

[Work-Around] Black Screen, White LED Flashing, Reboot to System

Hello Brothers,
It's been a long time (around 3+ years) that I was out of my school (XDA Forum). I am also a proud owner of OP3T.
We are blessed with several great developers, contributors, and members who are bringing in the latest stuff for our devices (3 & 3T).
There are a few people like me who are facing a strange bug - "White Led with Black Screen and Nothing Responds (Freeze)" and the only way to get rid of it is to force reboot by pressing and holding the Power Button.:crying:
I have tried almost all AOSP & LAOS based ROMs and faced the issue several times. It's a case wherein nothing works for you, you even can't take the logs as system is freeze and the worst is you can't re-produce it by yourself. It bugs us randomly anytime while doing anything - Connecting or Disconnecting the Call, Browsing Internet, Using Social Media, etc. Those of us who have faced the issue knows this bug while some has tried formatting the data and all restoring back and other work around, but I guess nothing works for this.

In last couple of days I tried a few things and since then I have not seen it coming again and thus wanted to share the same. A few members suggested that it can be a TWRP issue but its not only to that.
Work-Around (Temporary Fix)
0) Make a nandroid backup. It's even before the workaround starts so understand the importance.
1) Download the Latest Firmware (March 28th) or the "4.0.3 Firmware for your Device shared by @djsubterrain on his thread here - ."4.1.0 (Official Release) - 7.1.1 Flashable firmware & modem. Do not forget to thank him for his effort. It will proved to be a life saviour.
2) Download the TWRP developed by @eng.stk from his thread here - [KERNEL] [blu_spark r95 unified OP3/3T] [OOS 4.1.* / custom ROMs]. Thank him as well for all his hard work he has done for us and flash the downloaded TWRP.
3) The toughest part -
a) Boot in TWRP.
b) Go to Advanced > File Manager. Open It.
c) Go to "sdcard > Android. Delete it. Do not try to keep Obb for media folder. (Delete entire Android Folder)
d) You can keep the folder copied in PC.
e) For deleting in TWRP - Open folder > click on blue tick mark in bottom right corner > Select delete from option > Confirm Delete.
I know there will be games data and all in Android Folder. But can't helped it. I did the same way and it seems to be working for me. Also, if the workaround is not working for you then you copy the Android Folder back to your phone from PC (Point 3 & d)

4) Not Wipe system, data, cache, dalvik/art.
5) Flash the firmware downloaded.
6) Now flash a new ROM that you want.
7) Flash the Gapps.
8) Flash the firmware again.
9) Wipe Cache & Dalvik / ART and boot to system.
10) First boot will take time, so have patience. Complete the setup and use the ROM. Report back if this works for you to check if this is the FIX or only a workaround.
I have seen this working for me on both the ROM in which I faced the bug. So I have posted it. But whatever you're doing to your device is going to be your responsibility and thus you suggested to think and re-think of your decision. Kindly do not blame me or xda or anyone else for any earthquake, disaster or anything else.

Conclusion & Solution
Once again thanks to all the Developers, Contributors and Members for the help and Moderators for the necessary cleanup:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Bond
I tried following these exact steps but whenever I try to wipe the data in TWRP the problem happens. It fades to black and white LED turns on after a little bit. I have no idea what to do as this just started happening today.
I can recreate this every time just by trying to wipe the data partition, is there any other way I could try to wipe it?

Hi Brother,
Can you please flash the TWRP that's suitable for your device as given in the guide. Try to flash it first and then clearing the data.
Or you can also get the log through the process given here - Taking Log for Bug Report.
Please do get us the log to check.
Best Regards

When I flash that TWRP that you linked and reboot to recovery it goes straight to the black screen with white LED before I can even do anything.

I've also found that the problem occurs after opening Sync for reddit for a couple seconds. Also whenever I try to uninstall Sync it happens, but not any other app. Along with happening when I try to wipe data I think something might be happening with Sync that's causing this to occur whenever it tries to be modified or something. Really strange. I haven't had it happen in any other app yet or action other than those I have mentioned. Although flashing that TWRP does seem to trigger it as well. So I have no idea.
Alternative:
I have had this issue multiple times, what I did to fix it was booting into fastboot, connecting to PC and using the command:
fastboot erase userdata
Fixed the problem instantly, although your going to lose all of your data of course.

But would I lose any of my internal storage or just app data? Because I have all of that backed up in titanium.
Yes, it's the same as factory data reset. You'll lose all apps, music, photos, etc.
If your apps are backed up in titanium, make sure that the Titanium Backup folder in your SD Card is backed up on to your PC. Otherwise you'll lost that as well.

Ok thanks so much. I think I fixed it. I just nuked the whole phone and wiped everything, reflashing TWRP and everything else. Wiping the data no longer causes the issue which is good however I'll have to use the phone a bit more once it's set up to see if it is totally fixed. Thanks for help both of you!

Brothers,
Just reminding that restoring anything through Titanium Backup will cause you the same issues. So make sure before you restore anything.

It's all been working fine without the issue but I've found that it is only showing 25gb out of my 64gb of internal storage available, any idea of what I can do fix this?

Bro,
Thanks for the confirmation that its working.
Your screenshot is showing that data has used 52.4GB of space. Try formatting the internal storage and you will be good to go.

Bro,
Do not worry. Try checking it with ES Explorer or Root Explorer. If it shows less that the disk info then only you can go for formatting internal or else all is good.

So it is showing up the same in other explorers, how would I go about formatting internal storage? Is that done in TWRP or over fastboot or something?

You can do that through twrp or through Backup & Reset option in settings.
But before doing so backup your data in pc because every thing from the internal storage will get erased and you will loose all files, music n photos or anything from internal.

No, only system and gapps will be there and I'll advice to flash magisk v12 again after formatting.
All other settings will be deleted and will be like first time.
