Another new SE phone - XPERIA X10 General

Expected to arrive in September... The ST18i Urishi.
I don't think SE releases just one phone so maybe they will also release their rumored (and photographed by Mr. Blurricam) 16 megapixel SE - Android at the same time.

Hardware wise, it appears to be the *same* as the Neo but with a smaller 3.2" screen (same resolution). Considering that the Neo was supposed to be a smaller version of the Arc, I find it confusing why they would have bothered with the Neo. They should have just released this one instead. Personally, I prefer this one.

[Q] Has any one upgraded to arc from galaxy s? should I?

Hello I am thinking I may upgrade to the arc from my galaxy s. I can get a new arc for £288 and im guessing I can sell my galaxy s for around £200? so would mean £88 to upgrade.
If you have done this what are your experiences?
From the looks of it I assume it will have comparable performance and a bigger screen so nicer for web browsing.
Does the arc have tv out and does it work with a wiimote? e.g. can I use it as a snes (something I always wanted to do with my galaxy s but wiimote never worked)
Also what are your genreal thoughts what is better and worse.
Thanks a lot
First why do you want a uprade?
The arc en galaxy are almost the same in hardware. both have almost the same benchmarking. I used them both and here under are the biggest differences that i see:
- screen of arc is good with bravia engine, and screen is also bigger.
- picture tajing is almost the same in day but the arc takes better pictures at night.
- Arc has 8MP and the Galaxy has 5MP picture
- arc has 300mb for app installation the Galaxy has 1GB
- galaxy has 16GB internal storage
- arc has led for flash
-Arc has HDMI out, Galaxy has tv-out
just thethings that are popping in my head
Thanks for the help. That's pretty much what I was thinking and to me there both about the same.
The only reason I am looking is I have a discount voucher so I can get the arc for that price. I don't think I will bother. prob wait for a full hd phone with quad core, that would probably be nice.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Successor?

Hi Guys,
I currently own the Galaxy Tab 7.7 P6800 and love the device (especially after the ICS upgrade).
Such a nice combination of size, and functionality.
With the Galxy Note 2 reportedly coming out soon, what do you guys think about the Tab 7.7 successor?
I believe the Note and Tab 7.7 were announced the same time last year.

Don't ask me how I know this, but there is (or was as of a few months ago) a successor planned.
I also love the 7.7 because of the size, super amoled plus screen and the build quality but that comes at a high price compared to other tablets.
I would love Samsung to release a successor with a higher resolution screen (1920*1080), 2GB of memory, 2-GHz quad-core processor, S-Pen and Jelly bean which would make upgrading worthwhile.

Lets get a petition going. Ask them to sell it for $700-$900 gsm unlocked through google play. I'd pay $1000 for THIS one if it had a wacom digitizer...
Sent from my GT-P6800 using XDA Premium HD app
that would be nice... but dont want to pay premium for a device thats not future proof. Samsung and Google should go for 7.7 Nexus (premium device):fingers-crossed:
well if the new tab is a Samoled+ and 1080p along with the same battery timing and a 2gb ram + quadcore+ maintaining the same thin form factor then i will pay twice the price of the current one.... and i would love it like hell if there are two slots for microsd cards rather than just one... that would be the ultimate feature...
So, gentlemen, we've brainstormed the perfect SUPERTAB, now how do we get samsung (the sAMOLED+ patent holder) to make one?
7.7" form factor
sAMOLED+ with wacom digitizer (aka s-pen functionality)
243dpi or 1080p
2 sd card slots or perhaps 1 micro USB
GSM cell and data radio
5500miliamp bat.
1.4 ghz quad-core
2GB RAM
Really, the nexus, note, gTab 7.7, and 10.1 should all be galaxy class devices and have similar specs. Release them all at once, every holiday.
How do we get samsung to even consider a premium tier, mid tier and low-end tier though?
Their approach is so scattershot, there's no way they'd ever operate this way.
Granted, sAMOLED+ will be replaced SOON. My guess is 2015, likely by motorola or apple,
Capacitive brushes and precision styli won't require wacom forever... it wasn't hard to come up with what would make the next gen version of the p68xx worth paying for, so how do we move this forward?
Sent from my GT-P6800 using XDA Premium HD app
hope they include
-IR blaster
-mini USBport
-8-12mpxl main cam with xenon flash
-thinner bezel
they should redesign the speaker positions like those gtabs in germany wherein the speakers are on top and the bottom of the device (front facing i think)
so that whenever I play something, I won't inadvertently cover the speaker ports
Are you kidding?
I've only just started using my 7.7 in earnest after the ICS update.
Hoping a Jelly Bean rom will appear in the coming months and a 7.7 successor will be irrelevant

i agree to this. but yeah a successor would be nice. as long as my current 7.7 can do what i want it to do then i'm fine with it hehe.
for me, at least, the features that i would like for it to have is:
- higher resolution/dpi screen
- 8 or 12mp camera at the back
- 3 or 5mp camera in front
- removable/replaceable battery (no tablet has this i think)
- microUSB suporrt
- a better and faster media scanner (current one is pretty slow)
- orientation lock for the native video player
- better/louder speakers
- support for external hard drive usage
- dual sim support
- dual microSD suport
- keep receiver mode (love that i can call and send text messages using this tablet)
speaking of impossible, it would be awesome if the tab industry makes a tablet that can fold the screen into two, making it two screens. just unfold to return back to the full screen. LOL

Why have you stopped?
But seriously, there is no reason why these can't be included in a tab, but the drawbacks, I believe are:
1) Google want people to use "cloud"/internet to save and retrieve information from - not USB or internal storage - more advertising revenue (?)
2) The reason for a non-replaceable battery is that it is of a much better quality, whilst keeping production costs down - spare part batteries may also keep the device going longer than Samsung wish.
3) other things will come as technology improves and costs are kept under control - e.g. producing a drastically better dpi screen would double the price of the tab because that is not the current norm.
Anyway, this time next year, a lot of these wishes could be the norm.
A removable battery should be included, what happens when the original battery dies? Are we gonna be forced to buy a new tab because we can't replace battery?

7.7" SAMOLED 286 PPI @ 1080P, oh man that screen would be gorgeous... That screen + Exynos Quad + 2GB of RAM would be pretty sweet device (and realistic too). Because they can make higher PPI displays using pentile matrix on OLED tech. (S III has 306 PPI).
Unfortunately with the release and pricing of the Nexus 7, I'll be surprised to see Samsung continue to compete in this area... Which is unfortunate with the many features I appreciate missing in the Nexus.

The next nexus tablet could be a motorola, which has licensed the sAMOLED patent from samsung, or samsung manufactured the screen for the droid razr... also, toshiba has released a sAMOLED tablet, but I've been too busy fawning over mine to pay much attention to it.
I'd be willing to bet a "nexus line" of products will be coming along soon. Mid-high range devices for professionals and not just enthusiasts...

You are right. Will there be 3rd parties willing to offer replacing batteries? I fear a period of time will come when people start ripping out the insides to replace parts and they won't be able to. The battery is my prime suspect.
Suggest it to Engadget and get them to post it up on their site.
Apparently Samsung look to their comments section for feedback on their devices (their laptops anyway).

Galaxy S series always on the back burner in lieu of Galaxy Note?

That's been a trend since the S III and it seems the S 4 is following suit. I guess for lack of time or supply constraints, they can never fit their proprietary designed-ARM based chip onto the phone with all the biggest markets. Most of the biggest markets always get stuck with a middling Qualcomm chip (read up on the differences between the Snapdragon 600 and 800) to make up for the lack of bands their LTE networks have. I'm sure like the Note II, the Note III will have probably figured out how to put an RBG strip on its Full HD AMOLED screen (Pixel arrangement differences could have an effect on color saturation and gamut); as well as a fully compatible Exynos 5 Octa or Snapdragon 800.
For lack of a better description, the S 4 feels like a "test subject", leading up to Samsung's hardware later in the year. I only wish the phone wouldn't be announced in Q1, so by the time it was released in late Q2, maybe it would have access to all of the year's most cutting-edge computational technology. Maybe there's nothing that can be done, but isn't anyone annoyed by this trend of things?
Ever since the Note came out with more than a £100 worth of free downloads and was a massive seller in South Korea I thought the Note family was Samsung's true flagship, I want the S4 lte but I have an N4 so might wait for the Note3 but that's probably 8/9 months away, the economy could be completely screwed by then.
I agree. More innovation seems to come with the note series both in terms of hardware and software.
Regarding the screen, N3 should have a full RGB matrix. The larger screen than S4 but with the same no of pixels should allow them to fit more sub-pixels without having to reduce pixel size. So pen-tile (diamond) should become full RGB- AWESOME.

I guess so, but that's because of different things. hardware wise its because the note has the advantage of coming later, when production of the chipset is already done. The galaxy s series comes out earlier so its harder. As far as software i don't think the note 3 is going to be ridiculous superior to the S IV , it will have a bigger battery and enhanced S pen features but the S IV is already full of features.
Well, it's not like they aren't doing what they can with the phone at the time they release it. It's certainly a worthy upgrade to the S III. They're just so consumed with market share statistics, they're allowing their Galaxy S series to be shafted from all the yearly top specifications, while letting the Note capitalize on them. Maybe some people want a top-end device that's only 5" inches. Being relegated to second-tier is... daunting, to say the least. Waiting to late-April or early May to announce the device, then release it a couple of weeks later in May or June probably would have offered them more material to work with.

Note III will be Announced on September 4

5.7 full hd display
3gb ram
13mp camera and many more
The next generation Galaxy Note phablet from Samsung is one of the most anticipated devices of the year, so understandably rumors about it aren't hard to come by. According to latest report the Galaxy Note III will be announced two days before IFA 2013 kicks off - on September 4.
The report also says Samsung Galaxy Note III is said to sport a 5.7" Super AMOLED display, rather than the 6" unit that was most frequently mentioned so far. The 1080p resolution is still expected to feature a Snapdragon 800 chipset or an Exynos 5 Octa processor along with 3 GB of RAM.
Furthermore, the third generation Galaxy Note phablet is said to come out with a 13 megapixel rear camera and will be slightly thinner than the Galaxy Note II with its profile measuring 8mm.
Unfortunately, there is no official word from Samsung just yet, but the IFA 2013 launch seems inevitable, considering the strong competition in the phablet club.

Skipping to note 3.
Call me again when they launch a 1080p non-pentile with better processor and 6" without bezel to put the frontal samsung logo.
As I feared, the Note 3 will be a minor update to the Note 2. Samsung needs to bring a new phablet to remain competitive in this market segment and so it decided to fit the S4's camera, fit a new processor with dubious real life performance improvement, slightly increase the size of the screen and make it FHD to keep it up with the Joneses. Big deal...
Note 4, please.
This does NOT make me anxious for the Note 3 to be released.
Seems they want me to pay hundreds of dollars just to upgrade to a 1080p display that's slightly larger, and I bet we'll lose A LOT of battery life too (because of the bigger/higher resolution display).

I tend to agree with you. Of course there are always consumers who want to have the latest phone, but considering the price tag and that the Note series consumer is, IMO, a bit more tech savvy than the S series consumer, I believe that the Note 3 sales will be disappointing.
I look at the price of my Note 2 and the price tag of my laptop and they are about the same. When people look at the size of my Note 2 and ask "is that a cellphone?" I always answer: "actually, it is a pocket computer that also makes phone calls", 'cause that's the way I see my Note 2 (and in that perspective, 5.5" isn't too big).
Now, I'm not going to sell my laptop just because the new generation has some minor hardware updates. I don't really need them and it does not make any financial sense to spend money on a new laptop when my current one suits my needs perfectly. Specially in these times when we must think twice before spending our money. This reasoning also applies to my "pocket computer that also makes phone calls", i.e., my Note 2.
The two things that I really miss in my everyday use of the Note 2 is a slightly bigger screen to take notes, browse and read PDFs, and improved sunlight legibility. A camera with better low light quality and an image stabilizer that actually works would also be handy. The Note 3 brings none of this. Hence, I'll save my money for whatever future device offers me the features I really need, Samsung or not.

+1.
I'm really disappointed in Note III specs, I'm already looking for this beast: Sony Xperia Z Ultra :good:
I used Note 2 since the first day it was released, which makes it about almost 10 months old already. And to me, with the direction Samsung is heading by releasing so many variants, S4 Zoom, S4 Active, S4 Snap 800, S4 LTE Snap 600, S4 GSM Octa and so on makes me wanna puke, and I'm pretty sure there'll be at least 2-3 variants of Note 3. Hence, for once, I'm going to the brand that I hated so much last year, but now I've come to respect in terms of developer support and that is Sony. I'll go with Xperia Z Ultra. I don't need the S-Pen since I've used it for less than 50 times, so with Z Ultra, if I need to jot down notes, I'll take some pen or pencil and be done with it.Plus, the ROMs will have less bloatware too :victory::victory::victory: and that's an epic win for me
Or maybe, just maybe, we could actually wait for Samsung to reveal Note 3, and then discus on specs and if it's worth of upgrade.
I don't think I will upgrade to the Note III. I am getting my Note II in a few days, but I have used the Note II since launch date since I bought one for my dad. I am sure we can see a 2.3-2.5 GHz Snapdragon 800 or Exynos Octa Core Processor with 13 MP camera, 1080p resolution, a screen around 5.9", 2-4 GB of RAM (probably 3), 3600-3800 mAh battery, upgraded S-Pen support, a bunch of the S4 features, some unique features for the Note III, non-pentile display too, etc. The only things that I see as an upgrade are the processor and RAM really. The screen resolution is nice, but it is not necessary/ground breaking to have for app usage since devs support many devices. The camera will be amazing like the S4's, the battery life will be compensating the increase in screen resolution power. I wouldn't be surprised if we see three Note III's, an LTE model, an international HSPA+ (N7200), and LTE-Advanced model.

A Little Appreciation and why not to Upgrade

I bought the Note 10.1 a couple of months after it's launch in the US, and I have been using it in school to take notes on lectures ever since.
My friend bought the 2014 edition a few months back and I noticed that it just falls short. Yes, it's good, but it's no where near as good as ours is.
First and foremost - the battery is stronger. He squeezes out a day of usage while I can go to school 3 days in a row without getting near a charger.
The note 10.1 surprisingly does not lag. I think that it's one of the only samsung devices out there that don't lag with Touchwiz. The 2014 edition lags even when you pull down the notification shade.
Even the 2014 main advantage - it's display - is not worth it. The quality on the original note is so damn good that resolutions don't matter. I gave a few people the chance to compare them. The majority pointed on my tablet, claiming it had the better screen. The sheer quality of the display definitely makes up for the not-so-high resolution.
These are just some few basic things. If you go in deeper you'll surely find other little causes to favour the one over the other. But looking on the big things - battery, UI and general feel and even the display of the Note 10.1 are superior to the new 2014 Edition. If you have a 2012 edition and are considering whether to upgrade or not - save your cash. The 2012 is simply the better one.
Even Though That 2014 Edition might be thinner and smaller in size and looking better
but old one can do everything very well
i don't even Consider buying the new one because it will just be waste of money
i love my note and i think it's more than enough for me ^_^
Just bought the 2012, refurb from a major UK seller with 12 months warranty, half the price of cheapest 2014 I could find - well happy.
The only feat the 2014 edition Galaxy Note 10.1 has over the original Note 10.1 is the higher resolution.
2560 x 1600 on a 10.1" screen is beyond overkill.
about as much as the 1920x1200 resolution of my Nexus 7. I wish the Nexus 7 had capacitive buttons and not on screen dock buttons taking up the screen.
The Note 10.1 (N8000) is originally planned to run fluently with 1GB of RAM only (similar to Note 1 N7000), but its RAM is doubled (2x) at the last minute, making every specs twice the Note 1 with the same resolution, so it is more than enough even now. :good:
On the other hand, the Note 10.1 2014 only has its RAM boosted to 3GB (1.5x), its octa-core still operates in each group of four instead of true octa-core so they're not that much better, but the screen resolution becomes four times the N8000's, so it's somewhat insufficient. In fact, it is possible that the lag often occured when the tablet switches from the 'power-saving' group of CPUs (1.2Ghz x 4) to the 'performance' one (1.9Ghz x 4), so the Qualcomm version might be better.
About the screen: the 2014 one has higher resolution, which means in order to look nice everything displayed on it should at least match the huge resolution. The N8000 on the other hand still has HD resolution, which is quite good (considering HD was once a hype in TVs), and everything bigger than HD is guaranteed to look nice on it.
Yes n8000 is quite good all the way. Im not either going to replace this by 2014 or Pros. A minor (for me, huge) issue is the lack of a newer OS, but if you dont use smart-accessories, share SNote, you will be fine. Im using Sonys sw2 and unfortunately there is growing numbers of apps that require the API level of the newer OS than it is in A4.1.2 :/

One big thing that the note has going for it is support. I am not even sure if Samsung remembers this device.
I hate the home button on a tablet on a phone it's nice so it doesn't eat up space on a tablet with ample space navigation bars are a blessing. No matter how you hold the tablet you have access to the Navy bar unfortunately with a physical home button now you have to flip it around if you hold it a certain way.

I bought my n8013 last month after reading lots of reviews. Unfortunately, I did not look at XDA. It never even dawned on me that a tablet as awesome as this one would not even be brought up to the level of OS that my dual-core S3 was at. Still can't believe it. Having said that, this thing flies on Hyperdrive, has no lag at all with Nova launcher. But this machine really deserves at least one more major update. If the S5 is not the absolute best phone on the market when it is released, I think I will be done with Samsung's stuff for a while. I'll use and love this tablet till it falls apart tho.

I was one of the first on XDA to get a N10.1-12 in August, 2012, when it was launched. It replaced a year-old G-Tab 10.1 (which had the same screen resolution BTW). I've had a N10.1-14 since October. So I have lots of Samsung tablet experience. To say that the display on the '12 is "superior" to the '14 is ridiculous. The display on the N10.1-12 was painful from day one and Samsung was ridiculed for releasing such a high-end device without a 1,900x1,200 display which Asus and Acer were already offering. When I had a N2 going between it and the N10.1-12 was livable. The N10.1-12 was pretty much history after I got a N3 because of the pronounced difference in their displays.
The difference in form factor, design, and materials between the two is another big selling point for the N10.1-14. The N10.1-12 looked just like every other Samsung tablet and not like the flagship it was. And not a single reviewer had anything positive to say about the glossy plastic back and obviously plastic metallized bezel. The only benefit of the old design was front facing speakers but the N10.1-14's are certainly loud enough and most agree that the reduction in size by moving them to the sides was a worthy trade-off.
As for s/w changes the N10.1-14 adapts the same Multi View methods used in the N3. It's kind of jarring coming from the N10.1-12 but after using it for a while the changes Samsung made start to make sense. Using Air View to open apps with Pen Window is fantastic. You can have a browser present and minimized as an icon constantly available no matter where you are in the UI and no matter what you're doing. Leaks have already appeared of 4.4 with Magazine UX for the N10.1-14. In it, the number of Pen Window apps have tripled and the ability to "cascade" multiple apps is being introduced (it was a feature from the N10.1-12 that was missing). There's nothing from the N10.1-12 that I miss s/w wise.
The N10.1-12 is a great device and for people buying it today for $200'ish it's a great value based on the function it provides. Nothing's going to make a 147 PPI display acceptable when even today's low-end 7" tablets have it beat. And that low PPI display is the only reason the performance of the N10.1-12 is still adequate. The Exynos chip and Mali 400 GPU it uses are the same as what's in the SGS3 which debuted in March, 2012; almost two years ago.
And for those with short memories the N10.1-12 shipped with 4.0.4 and wasn't upgraded to 4.1 and the "Premium Suite" until January, 2013. There were tons of issues with the N10.1-12's launch s/w and plenty of lag; especially when multiple apps were open. So the N10.1-14 does have some occasional transition lag but is due to receive a major update this month; less time than the five months it took Samsung to update the N10.1-12 so it performed to its full potential.
You're entitled to your opinion and I'm not trying to change it. But as someone whose owned both devices I wouldn't want someone to buy the N10.1-12 today without some counter point to consider because you and I have greatly differing opinions.

Theres a hacked version in the Nexsus 5 Q&A section maybe you can give it a try on your N7. It works real well on the N5. DL link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1qjrD8ZER9ITmlVNW1EVWM5YlE/preview

You and I are quite the opposite. I bought my N8000 four months ago, and despite being able to get the 2014 version, I decided not to. I will tell you why.
1/ Yes, the 10.1 2014 is more powerful, but it does not make the N8000 any less so. I moved to my N8000 from the sk17i SE Mini Pro, and the sk17i is the same powerful device as the original Galaxy S, specs-wise: 1Ghz single-core and 512MB of RAM. With the power of the -once- most powerful mobile device, it still had things that couldn't be done, why? Because the Galaxy S was the very best they could give you at its time. The best of that time was simply not sufficient, that was why people longed for more (Btw, the sk17i still completed most of the tasks I expected). When I moved to the N8000, which has four times the sk17i's specs, the tasks I gave to my device mostly remained the same: word processing (not as nicely as the sk17i with its hardware keyboard, though), web browsing and email, plus being my personal drawing canvas, and all of those have always been completed without lag. What I mean is, there was a time when even the best they could offer was not adequate, but now there exists a line in specifications that, when you cross it, it does not make any difference no matter how far you cross it. No matter how many years it has been, either. OEMs always compete; specs have outgrown the actual needs for it, CPUs and RAM outgrown what an average PC once has, and screen resolution/dpi gone beyond what the eye can see. All for the privilege to brag that "My device is better than your device", and do so for, like, a month? Now, tell me what you can't do without the 2014 version's specs, some kind of multi-gigs 3D games that you play for a few minutes each day? No problem, I will live without it.
2/ The 10.1 2014 portrays what I personally call 'Google's major design flaw' and what Samsung has to come up with to improvise: the hardware navigation buttons. I have written this multiple times, but again, since Android 4.2+, the tablet UI no longer exists (though developers still manage to pull it out from the depth of codes till its complete removal in 4.4). Since the Tab 3 generation (including the cute Note 8.0) it has been determined that Samsung tablets will operate with Android 4.2+ as the final update, so all these devices are equipped with hardware navigation buttons as preparation. As for the N8000, can you download the harware buttons from the Internet? Of course not. So if a 4.2+ update for the N8000 ever existed, it would stand out from the rest of Samsung tablets and have to be specially made. Maybe the guys at Samsung was preparing the 4.2 update when 4.3 came out. Maybe when they decided to skip 4.2 and moved to developing the 4.3 update, when suddenly 4.4 came out. Maybe they then decided to once again skip the underdeveloped 4.3 update for 4.4, or decided it was not worth the effort and abandoned ship, whatever took them that long to deliver absolutely nothing. But I can tell you, a flagship device like the N8000 having no update till now is not entirely Samsung's fault, much less the N8000's. Blame Google for releasing Android versions so quickly with little changes, user-wise (Okay, having no Tablet UI is a big change here). Whether or not there is an update remains a test of faith, or even an inside joke, remember Half-Life 3?

With those aside, I agree with you that the 2014 version feels much more premium; it was such a pleasure holding it in my hand. The size, weight and material is admirable, especially from Samsung.
The size of the new unit rocks. And there is about where it ends. I have a TabPro 10.1 here I may return, especially since we will be getting kitkat. While the smaller size and weight is really nice, I have 2 major problems with it....
1) Stupid Physical Home Buttons. Hate it on their phones, hate it on their tabs. Especially annoying on tabs in portrait mode.
2) Our original note 10.1 has far superior multi-windowing, imo. I didn't much care for it on the Note 10.1 2014 (android 4.3) and they've changed it again in 4.4.2 on the *Pro tabs. My concern is that the kitkat update to ours is going to change it to the new method.
TabPro 10.1 returned. Just not convinced the "upgrade" actually is an upgrade to this tablet. In waiting mode
