this might be a stupid question, but what is a kernel and how do u use them? i know what a rom is and how to install but not a kernel....
Wikipedia definition:
"In computing, the kernel is the central component of most computer operating systems; it is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. The kernel's responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components).[1] Usually as a basic component of an operating system, a kernel can provide the lowest-level abstraction layer for the resources (especially processors and I/O devices) that application software must control to perform its function. It typically makes these facilities available to applicationprocesses through inter-process communication mechanisms and system calls."
Since Android is based on Linux: (don't know if this relevant)
"The Linux kernel is an operating system kernel used by the Linux family of Unix-like operating systems.[6] It is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software.[7]
The Linux kernel is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2),[4] (plus some firmware images with various licenses), and is developed by contributors worldwide. Day-to-day development takes place on the Linux kernel mailing list.
The Linux kernel was initially conceived and created by Finnish computer science student[8] Linus Torvalds in 1991. Linux rapidly accumulated developers and users who adopted code from other free software projects for use with the new operating system.[9] The Linux kernel has received contributions from thousands of programmers.[10] Many Linux distributions have been released based upon the Linux kernel."
I have a question too.
When I boot ubuntu 10.04, the kernel comes up as 2.6.32, I think this is the same number as a previous android kernel. So how close is the android kernel to the linux kernel, us it a fork? When the new linux kernel comes out, will the android kernel be updated to reflect that?
What the little brown things are in a popcorn bag before you pop it XD
I thought it would be better to ask here than start a new thread but i have never installed a kernal before and was wondering how, do you just flash it in recovery? I have the desire rom and would like for my speaker to be a bit louder.
With kernels, I usually do ADB command.

It's the same with some Android and phone specific patches applied. A config file decides what architecture to build for and what drivers to include. That's what lets us bring in cutting edge features like compcache and BFS quickly.
Nice to think that your phone is running the exact same code that the world's fastest supercomputer is.
CLOUD_COMMANDER GHOST
Hi guys,
For all those who have tried our previous releases here comes a new version 1.4 A.KA Ghost.
Upcoming features include improvement of remote view and keyboard.
Creating an open-source engine for multi-platform and api exposure to third party.
We are also going to separate the engine from the main application so that other developers can work on it and implement a common platform for processing and executing android commands from xmls, this will allow for a universal platform where by all developers can improve how commands are executed from the core and also that the engine can be used by any shell software out there, thus opening doors from multi-platform development of the engine.
The commands created in this software will be stored in our server for now in the future you might expect multiple servers from different vendors, if you use the other method (XML editing) which is not recommended, please share you files with your users.
All bugs should be reported to [email protected]

NB: PLEASE DON'T SEND COMMANDS THAT ARE NOT TESTED PERSONALLY!
EDIT:
Version 1.2 does not update tables since we shifted our servers to cloudflare and has some minor engine flaws thus it's obsolete.
Download the latest version to maintain commands compatibility.

Hi.
Wiki says - The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or GPL) is a widely used[6] free software license, which guarantees end users (individuals, organizations, companies) the freedoms to run, study, share (copy), and modify the software. Software that allows these rights is called free software and, if the software is copylefted, requires those rights to be retained. The GPL demands both. The license was originally written by Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for the GNU Project
Locked bootloader violates our right to modify software (linux kernel). Can we demand for unlocked bootloader under GPL statement?

Seems promising !
Would definitely give it a try & report back soon.
On a related note: I'm also in the process of rewriting Dummydroid, a companion tool for spoofing arbitrary Android devices. Any artists around here willing to contribute an application icon (must be in SVG format and under a creative commons license)?
Used to work for me, lately it just hangs by signing in.
Loved it!

Can you check if there's an exception thrown on the console?
New version (4.0.1) is available!
Greetings to all of you!
Here to let the community know I just finished my newest project i.e., a cloud-hosted APK decompiler for Android apps. I know we have a couple out there, but this is special as it's the only one that is open-source. I mean you can know wtf happening under the hood before uploading your private Android apps for decompilation. Plus, it's responsive so you can use it even on your phone.
