so I finally got around to making an OTG cable for my Xoom and was very surprised when I plugged in my 8 button, 2 way scrolling logitech wireless mouse and it worked instantly, no drivers needed...
also plugged in a key board and it worked perfectly...
I connected a USB flash stick and opened a file manger but it doesnt show up...
Is there something Im missing here, should I be able to use a USB flash stick on stock 3.1?
also, what else can we do with the USB?
Ive heard we can connect a camera to it... anything else?
Thanx
Danny
You can USB tether your phone. Useful if you have a wifi only version. But you need to root, and flash the Tiamat 1.4.4 custom kernel.

You can flash a Tiamet kernel and get more functionality. When you plug in a thumb drive go into your file explorer and look for the OTG directory. I use root explorerfor that. You can also plug in a USB powered hard drive into a hub or directly into the OTG cable. You can also plug in USB controllers or USB PS3 and 360 controllers.
It would be cool if they could get USB speakers working. I never tried it but who knows if it work.
Is flashing a Kernel the only way to get it to see a thumb stick?

Currently, yes.
I would only advise it if you are absolutely comfortable with development tools and you can afford to possibly brick it.
If you follow the instructions there is no harm.
thanx for the responses, Its not a huge deal for me right now... so no need to go flashing kernels..

You need to flash the latest Tiamet kernel which supports it. Look in the Xoom Development section and read the readme section for details.

Hi All.
I've got a problem with updating my phone. No matter what I do, the computer doesn't see it and the phone doesn't see computer. I've tried different drivers and nothing helped. On the phone there isn't any sign, that it's connected to anything and the computer doesn't show anything too. There isn't even any sound, that indicates that something has been connected to the computer. I've got Windows 7 64bit.
I hope that somebody will know what could be the problem.
Try a different usb port? Damaged USB cable(maybe..)
I've tried on 3 computers. Is it possible that the cable is broken if it charges the battery??
Update:
At last I've got 2.1 on my phone. There was something wrong with the cable or USB port. I had to keep the cable with my hands that it wouldn't disconnect.

USB uses different wires for power and data, so although your phone is charging one of the wires that transfers data could have been damaged so it would charge but not transfer any data.
As for your edit, that was dangerous, if it had disconnected you would have bricked your phone, I would invest in a new cable before I attempt to use a damaged one especially for flashing firmware, stock or custom.
I'll buy a new cable and see if the cable was broken or the USB port. I'm lucky that everything is OK. I'll wait until I'll change something in my phone.
I've got one question. Is there any way to install applications on SD card??
Multiple ways.
I'm thinking about updating to Android 2.3, does it have the possibility to install apps on SD card??

Use this app. it requires root (assuming you have it)

You might could try the app called nexus media importer in the play store

He said he's already tried it.
Have you got SuperSU to grant super user access to devices?
As StickyMount needs superuser permissions to function.
If you don't have SuperSU, download it, configure it and then try to manually run StickyMount, it should ask you to grant it superuser permissions, do this and your good to go.
If you've already done this, I've seen people removing stickymount, clearing all the data/cache etc, delete it from superSU list and then re-install StickyMount, re-grant it superuser and you should be good to go !
I confirm loss of OTG support with 4.1.2 - I downgraded to 4.1.1. and recovered OTG support.
This is a bad update....
Stock kernel on both...rooted...using USB mass watcher with OTG but tried others on 4.1.2 to no avail...
Ehud
Mine has OTG support with stock 4.1.2, though only intermittently. I traced the problem to the OTG cable. Something is loose in the female usb head because it stops working whenever I lightly touch it and starts working again when I push the cable deeper into the plastic cover.
Maybe something similar is happening to yours.
Rooted, stock kernel, 4.1.2 OTA: I still have full OTG-usb support with Stickmount. I just now viewed some pics on a flash drive and copied a file to the external drive.

Which ROM are you using?
Rooted, stock rom, stock kernel, now 4.2.1, cwm recovery, stickmount. OTG works perfectly for read/write and streaming media.
4.2.1 , no OTG-USB!!! what's wrong
Are you rooted and using the current stickmount app? The storage media should be FAT32. Some cables may not work. Maybe try with a wireless mouse receiver.
Edit: Just saw your other thread. Sounds like you are doing the right things. Did stickmount ask for root access?
It might be your otg cable
For some users, the app appears not to work, while in fact it is the device itself or the cable not working. One OTG cable is not the other OTG cable. If you have a USB stick with a light on it, it should light up when you connect it to the Galaxy Nexus using your OTG cable. If it does not, either your cable or your Nexus is faulty. 99 out of 100 times it is going to be your cable. That the cable works fine with another device does not mean anything! Cables known to work on a one devices may not work on another device.

OTG working perfectly for me on paranoid android 2.99 rom
I just got my Asus Nexus 7 today and i have a problem. First thing i did is connect OTG cable to it and i was suprised when keyboard didn't work. After that i rooted my tablet with motochopper script and i verifyed it to work. Since i saw most of people use StickMount i downloaded it and when i started it it did not ask for root which was weird for me. I conenneced my USB flash device to OTG cable and pressed mount but nothing happened. My USB device is formated to FAT32 primary partition. I also tried with some other USB flash devices and only thing i noticed is that on one of them light blinked but nothing happened. I also tried with some other mounters but nothing happened. I can confirm that there is new USB connection when i connect OTg cable (lsusb). I can confirm this cable works becouse i tested it with Galaxy S II and it worked. Please, help.
ROM: Stock
Bootloader not unlocked
ROOTED: Yes
BusyBox: latest & all tools symlinked
Some otg cables work with some devices, but not others. You need to make sure that your cable is compatible with the Nexus 7. Can you share the link where you bought yours from?

Stock kernel would make no difference, as it is compatible with an ext kb right out of the box.

Hello
I'm trying to get USB OTG working on my Nexus 7 2012 WiFi but with no luck.
I've tried Stock ROM and CM10.2 but none of them detect my USB drive. Stickmount doesn't work either.
My flash drive is 32GB, USB 3.0 formatted in FAT32 and it works with my Samsung Galaxy S3 bit not with my tablet.
I'm currently on Android 4.3 and I prefer to stay on this version and not update to KitKat.
Any ideas? What ROM/Kernel should I flash to get it working?
First question: are you rooted? Stickmount has always worked for me on stock roms, rooted.

Yes, my device is rooted. I also mentioned that i tried CM10.2 which is always rooted.
The interesting thing is that the cable worked before and now it doesn't and no my usb port on the nexus isn't broken.
About the only thing I can suggest is to try a different cable.

I have used the thumb drive in the past but after switching ROMs it worked once but then does not get detected. It shows up in Recovery.

1. Connect OTG drive.
2. Shut Down the phone (NOT reboot) while keeping OTG connected.
3. Turn on the phone.
Now OTG will work.

Using PBH v19 with ResRemix. I think OTG support is more ROM dependant than Kernel.
