i have seen so little development on this tablet I'm the past few weeks regarding the bootloader. Has anyone been activly playing with kexec? From what I read its the most logical idea.

Locker Bootloader -> No Recovery
As Consequence:
First Kexec, Then Recovery via Kexec.
i know ... we need a new super smart dev to compile the kexec kernal modual and then we need the kernel source. We could employ the Asus transformer kernel with some modification, but I wount even know where to start... I wish I was smart enough to do this...

I dont know, my X10 always has a encrypted locked bootloader and we have a working recovery. Atrix and others phones already have recovery with their locked bootloaders.

While I can't say about the x10 but the atrix is using the kexec method for getting around the bootloader. Although last I checked they needed the kernel source to make more progress. .Im hoping the atrix can inspire the a500 community
I think the only way we're going to get kexec to work reliably is to get the source and compile a kernel w/ kexec enabled and use ksplice to merge them.
I'm playing with getting the kexec module that they used on the milestone to build with the Transformers' source, but even if it builds (and loads), I doubt that it'll work right.
Edit: the purpose of this is because the kernel wasn't built with kexec support.
weather it does or not. its still progress, which im seeing very little of. not that im pressuring anyone. i would actually love to help if i was able to :/ im glad someone is actively playing with a solution.
Sometimes you can't force development with money or social pressure.
Developers need time and ideas and there are few people that can help them with that issue..

Just curious question, been browsing for the past few days after root was achieved and didn't see this topic mention(unless i missed it). But are dev. just gonna skip with the 2.1 roms and go for a 2.2 rom instead?

Devs do what they want, it's unpossible to predict what ROMs might be interesting to put together. On one hand 2.2 is way faster and more exciting from a technical point of view but otoh SE will release a 2.1 soonish and it might be easier to mod that.
yeh i know, thats why i said curious question, haha i wasn't demanding that they make this or that ^.^, just wanted to see where we stand now after getting root. Hopefully one of those dev got really bored from working on a rom and read my post and answer...haha

Hehe, the point really is that it's way too early to speculate about building ROMs. I'm betting that a lot of time is being spent on "fixing" the bootloader, I'd be surprised if there was any ROM development going on at all besides fixing any problems caused by the rooting.
Once we have a hacked bootloader we can do anything and since the hardware is fairly close to the Nexus One or Desire it shouldn't be very difficult to port 2.2. It could probably be done in less than a few days, maybe more if there are driver issues.
Kitchen is closed till bootloader gets broken. When it's done, i'm quite sure only froyo will be developed.
Hi,
I havent toyed around much with bootloaders and android.. but does the bootloader check the kernel checksum before invoking the kernel? ... How does the bootloader determine what kernel to invoke?
What needs to be changed in the bootloader to get Froyo running?...
For me it seems like a simple task to exchange the kernel without touching the bootloader (if the kernel is not checked by the bootloader before actual boot).. We have root, so exchanging the kernel is not that hard is it?...
two things could stop one from doing it:
1. Kernel is hardcoded in bootloader and read only.
2. bootlaoder might have security mechanisms to make sure the kernel is correct.
One should not need to modify the bootloader to get going..

I can't quote chapter and verse but I'm fairly certain that there's a checksum in the kernel and possible the ROM too that the bootloader checks. Unlike with the N1 we can't remove that check with a simple adb command.
Well what ever it takes I sure wish the people working on this the very best. It would be great having the new Abode flash 10.1 which will only work with 2.2 or newer! It is just too bad SE aren't considering this point
It is more related to the bootloader applying security checks to the kernel loading..
I have looked everywhere and can't find out. Some say it isn't locked, some say it is. Is it unlocked so you can not rom? If so, I will get the Xoom.
Its not locked its encrypted. There are ways around it to install custom roms
Read threads in the developers threads.
Thanks for the reply. So whats the big deal about it being locked?
Its a so called way to protect the rights of digital media and software developers.by having the device locked it suposed to limit hacking ability.but there is always a way around it.
They should leave our devices to us.
Thanks for the answer. I will get the Xoom. It is better (performance). It can also unlocked and relocked.

lol same hardware, same performance. Mine is unlocked, and unless you accept the latest update to 3.2, you're good to go, and even then you can downgrade, root, then manually update to a pre-rooted 3.2 ROM.
ER, you just lost one to a Xoom lol
So does this mean if I were to create a custom kernel I couldn't?
I really like the Iconia. It has a USB port and good screen. I also like the Xoom. If the Acer can't be hacked I will get the Xoom as it is also a very good tablet imo .

Thanks for the speedy reply! There are custom roms but I don't think they have custom android kernels as the bootloader is still encrypt.
I will go for the Acer. I am sure in 12 months for now they will unlock it because something new will come out (tegra 3). I won't be unlocking it until my warranty expires in 2012.
Acer seems to have better screen etc.
Cheers again for all the help so far.

3.2 bootloader is locked, so ppl are cooking pre-rooted 3.2 roms and custom kernels.
If you OTA from 3.1 to 3.2 you'll lose root, and have to downgrade which is a pita!
There are a few stock pre-rooted 3.2 ROMS in the DEV section, along with at least a couple custom kernels that will work with stock 3.2 ROM.
The people that are moaning are the id10ts that took the OTA, and haven't a clue how to downgrade to get their root back, and start over the correct way.
I prefer the Xoom. Less weight, even more hackable and better performance.

Get an IPad, then you won't have to worry about kernels.
Sorry for being like that, but there's soooooo much information about custom kernels on these forums for our A500, that I'm beginning to wonder if you can read (not trying to be a smartazz, just stating the obvious).

If you want spoon feeding, you can ask at Disney.com forums.
Your questions have been answered in full.
One more time since it appears as though you didn't get it the first few times.
Yes there are custom kernels for the A500, both here in the DEV section of the forums, as well as elsewhere on other sites.
If you still don't get it, then I implore you to take the advice of the other person and buy a Xoom, or better yet an IPad so you can brick one of those and then start a thread "Help....bricked Xoom".
How many times do you need your question answered?!?
hey my play comes in the 3erd and i will like to know is there any working ICS roms for it and how to go about doing every thing i need to. i use to have the lg ally running velocity v1.2 but by the looks of it with my new play i have flashing roms and recover look way harder then the ally was so i need some info guys and a guide and what roms are save to flash and what recovery do i need to have also and thanks for you help also!!!
I havent seen any ICS roms for the r800x but recovering/flashing roms is made very very easy with this from the android market "Xperia CWM Auto-Instaler"
You don't even need to unlock the bootloader, just needs to be rooted and then go about setting up the Xperia CWM Auto-Instaler and just make a nandroid backup. I would reccommend using Cola's rom or IT-ROM (which is based off of Cola's rom) for the r800x, they both have worked perfectly for me and I'm currently running IT-ROM which definitely makes the r800x run much smoother/faster.
Wifi, 3g, sms, ect all worked without any issues, and if you're somone who is worried about being able to overclock, I know someone is working on that with Cola's rom, but I dont think it's finished yet. But, those roms take care of basically any speed issues one may have with their r800x, it definitely did the trick for me.
Good luck

How are planning on installing the ROM without recovery? Seriously, read everything again so you don't brick your phone.
And make sure you're installing a ROM for locked bootloaders.... If you try to install that CM7 ROM it'll likely never boot again.

you can unlock your boot loader it just cost $$ , someone with setool , a paper clip and not minding voiding your warrantee. I would not suggest it until you've gotten a bit experience under your belt but when you get there its worth having done in my opinion , many people vary on this subject and they're right also.
There is limited real benefit to unlocking the R800x, since the devs have been focusing on the locked ROMs... Not much out there, unless you're planning to develop it yourself.

I'm not a developer, but I'm looking into a few things in regards to getting something going with this model. The biggest hurdle right now for me is figuring out how the partitions work on this thing and when they get mounted. Seems like they don't even exist until the damn thing is halfway booted up, so flashing from fastboot is a challenge. Once I figure out the right things to put into an updater script I think she'll be something we can work on. Again, I'm no developer, but I'm hoping I can gather enough peices of info that someone with more skills can take off with it.
In the meantime I'm cramming through the android sdk docs and java for dummies, smali stuff and xml. Hopefully I'll get to where I can start doing something before the phone is an antique.

Well as it is now, we can root using ADB commands with fastboot. You can either use CWM or TWRP, however CWM is a little more involved, so most people are just using TWRP.
Once rooted, CM10 can be flashed onto the M, but NFC and Wifi Direct don't work, which generally isn't a deal breaker for anyone on the Electrify M. However, it's a careful process since anyone flashing to CM10 will need to restore the APN settings.
Personally, I just kept it stock JB, but rooted. CM10 was too much of a headache to bother with after I screwed up the first time and had to flash stock in an emergency when on vacation. haha!
This is all being discussed on another website, and since I don't know the rules about posting external links, I'm not going to =)
To obtain root use kingo root google it. Then its simple to install twrp latest ofcourse with terminal emulator. I did mine at 330 am after trying for weeks with no luck on other methods . Worked like a charm. Remember follow Op in rom thread you wish to flash afterwards. Im just a user sharing.

Finally! I have root. Thanks!
Now, the question is, can you flash recovery and then ROM while only having root and locked bootloader using for example Flashyfi? Or, I'm thinking about Xposed, but the thing is, I don't really think that would help that much, as everybody who has this device knows, that the internal flash is slow so much that even floppy drive would have been faster, so you need to store rom/app/data on external sd if you want to have somewhat fast device. But that obviously isn't possible with stock rom, right..?
Otherwise i guess I might just unlock because, after like year or so, the stock ROM gets very very slow and laggy and it makes me mad, as for this expensive device, I would like to use it and don't just wait all the time for things to happen.
Trust me stock is slow even with 90% free memory. I unlocked from day one. Once yoh unlock you can use the method j stated in op. Youll be happy my tab is way faster plus im oc'd

You will need to unlock your bootloader to install any custom ROMs, kernels, or recoveries, even if you have root. xposed is probably your best option for tweaking.

Exactly.. I mean like... I understand that they need a way how to protect their devices from people who don't know what they're doing, which usually results in bricking devices and excpecting that manufacture will repair it for free. What I don't understand, is why they're claiming my warranty is gone. As for example, if screen or keyboard stops working it's clearly not SW issue (or most likely). The only good thing about this is that since I'm living in EU, if I get HW issue, they have to repair it even if it's unlocked, because of law. Can you rely on it? That's the question.
Anyway, now I'm running custom ROM and it's really something else.
