[Q] NC 1.2- restore to stock - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob here, having read dozens of threads, and just about ready to go ahead and try CM7 on EMMC.
I have the blue dot NC, with the new partitions (would it be beneficial to change the partitions back to the old version, and if yes, does this need to be done before or after rooting?).
One thing holding me back is that I'm not sure if I've got the right instructions to restore back to stock, if needed.
Is this it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520 ?
And can all this be done with just one older 2GB sd card?
I've tried out CM7 on this card, but it's incredibly slow, and market downloads don't ever start.
Also, is there a step by step guide that covers it all somewhere? I keep following links for parts of the procedure, and then more links, until doubts set in.

Well you've gotten further than me! I was about to pick one up until I heard something about the "blue dot" and un rootable? How do you know? Is this true?

Well, maybe *you"ve* gotten further than I have, and saved me from bricking my NC!
I thought the blue dot meant it's version 1.2 with the new partitioning, but hadn't heard that it's un-rootable.
Do you have a link to info about that?

Well if that's true, than it should be no problem. I've seen the thread here for rooting 1.2. Another nook site had a root and said it only worked on 1.1, go to xda for 1.2 root. So it seems like I was prob getting old info.

I used the following thread and a video on youtube:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
-The only place I swayed was using the size-specific SD CM7 installer.
So without further ado, the problem at hand:
"The application Market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." - "Force Close"
The preceding message comes up constantly. At first startup and then everytime I try to download any app at all. I've been reading through tons of threads, but am completely unsure of which to go forward with for troubleshooting, as mentioned earlier, it's my first day
Please if you are able to help, I would truly appreciate a very basic and/or detailed explanation if possible.
Thank you in advance.
That was written a long time ago. Go here and follow the instructions and make sure you use the latest version of CWR (3.2.0.1): http://mrm3.net/nook-color-how-to-install-cyanogenmod-nightlies/
Thank you for the reply. Obviously as I stated I'm new, so it being written a long time ago wouldn't be of known knowledge to me.
The process on the page is essentially identical to the process I followed without the overclocking, because I haven't done that yet. Can you point out where in the site you listed I would need to read to remove the errors I am having?
I would suggest a clean install...and follow verygreen's steps. I don't believe you even have to partition the 4th partition with his steps, somehow it's there after you install CM7 and gapps. I recommend trying CM-7.1.0-RC1-encore. I too, used an 8GB card and had about 5GB left to use on the 4th partition.
If you are using a previously used mSD card (like...one you already put an image on for backup purposes), then you should wipe it clean with Panasonic SD Formatter v.2.0 and wipe the card.

@OP, most of the time when you see "FC" error, it's most likely the uSD as a culprit.
In your case, the Sandisk, hmmm. Where did you get it? ebay?
For now, my suggestion is completely reformat the card (using MiniTools Partition Wizard) then reinstall CM7 nightly build follow verygreen's instructions.
@patruns, what you try to suggest him? He has FC running from uSD, m8. CwM has nothing to do in this case.

The uSD card was purchased from amazon.
Do I have to just format the uSD and then start over or do I have to do anything with CWM and/or the NC itself before moving forward??
I trust amazon.
If you are running CM7 off uSD using verygreen's, I suggest you do a complete reformat the uSD and start over again.

I'll try it tonight and update the thread afterwards.
Thank you for the help thus far guys!!!!
Pretty sure I got it going now! Thanks again everyone.
For future reference, the video I had watched in conjunction with verygreen's instructions, had instructed me to do gapps and cm7 at once in a slightly different manner.
I did gapps after finishing with cm7 and it now works beautifully!!!

Thanks for responce, the wife does not want me to do all that to her beloved NK, she has it setup the way she wants and does not want me to try and fix it. She saw what a process it was for me at 1st to go thru with my TF101 so she has lil faith in me after 30 yrs---sheesh. Besides, for her use the 1.3 update would not impact her performance as she just reads and checks email...lol
Well, back to the Transformer and trying diff mods---luv learning this stuff and the constant improvements you guys do around here. 1.7 prime runnin like a dream--woohoo

[Q] Upgrading to CM 7.2 RC

Hi all,
I just had a question about upgrading to CM 7.2RC. I am currently running the stable version of CM 7.1. It has been awhile since I changed out the rom. Did I have to do a full wipe of the device before upgrading to the RC? Or can I just wipe the cache and install the update so it maintains everything else on the device.
Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just do the second thing. No full wipe.
This thread down in the cyanogenMod forums shows you how to upgrade if you did not know how or want to gleam more information on this. Or for anyone else that is interested. http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/40698-installing-nightly-builds-and-new-71/
Ok, but what do I do if I'm running off a bootable SD card? I was told to just copy the new rom to my F boot, then boot into recovery. I have done this over and over again with no success. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. if I'm supposed to copy the rom to a specific partition, then Im screwed because I don't know how to do that.lol. By the way, till about 3 months ago I could count on one hand how many times I'd sat down at a computer. Got a nook color as a gift
,and have been in love ever since. I'm running cm7.1 stable, at 1200mhz. I've had to teach myself every step, every step of the way. So if I sound like a idiot, its because I know nothing about computers, but I am learning. Thank you for your patients

You are probably not renaming the zip to begin with update-. You must do that before the installation script will recognize it.
Sent from my Nook Color running ICS and Tapatalk
Yes I have renamed it. it was cm-7.2 and I changed it to update-cm-7.2 but still nothing. here's the thing, when I try to format this card on my PC, its saying its write protected, and to switch it off. I assume it means the lock switch on the sd card adapter. If thats the case, something is screwed up, because its not locked. I don't think its my adapter cause its not saying that with other cards. When I copy the cm7.2 it says its copying just fine and I can see it on the card but if I take it out and put it back in, its not there. Sorry for the pain in the butt question, and thank you for your time.

I had the same thing happen to one of my sdcards. I could not format it, or write things to it. I could read it fine, just not change anything. I tried all kinds of readers and software (formatters, partitioners, etc.) It would look like it wrote to it, but take it out of PC and put it back, it was not there. I finally had to throw it away and get a new one. This all happened on my phone, not my nook.

[Q] Help getting MT4G ready for sale

Hi all, former MT4G user here, moved on a bit ago...but decided to sell my old MT4G since it's just sitting around...stupidly did a factory reset, totally having a duh moment and forgetting all the root stuff, and now it's stuck at a glimmer "Android" screen, not going anywhere...
It's been a while since I rooted, can you pls. help/remind me what I need to do to get it working again? Flash a new ROM I'm guessing, since I must have wiped the one that was on there (it was a Sense ROM). Ideally since I'm selling it, I'd love to get it back to 'stock.'
Problem is, I'm not sure how to mount it to my computer now to load stuff on, since it's stuck booting...I guess I'll dig around and try to remember the whole rooting world, like I said it was like a year ago and I haven't played with it since...thanks for any help

Download one of the files from this thread, verify md5, boot into hboot, phone will scan and ask to update, select yes and let it do its thing and you should be good to go.
I am not sure about other recoveries, but if you have clockwork, there is an option to mount sd card so you can transfer files, otherwise remove your sd card and use a card reader...

Thanks! Yeah after doing some searching I re-figured out how to get into bootloader mode (is that the same as hboot?), and from there to recovery. Now I just have to find the sd card which I apparently removed a while ago!
Thanks for the link too, will try it once I find an sd card.

Also - just looking at that link, so if I flash that PD15IMG file, it will revert the phone to stock gingerbread? That would be perfect.
NM - just reading through the thread and it looks like that's exactly what it does. Awesome, thanks again!

Thanks, and sorry for posting in the wrong section!
Just wanted to update and say that I finally got around to doing it. Buyer brought his own sd card, as I couldn't find mine (fear I may have accidentally trashed it during a recent massive spring cleaning). Loaded the file on, went through hboot, phone booted up stock and ready to go.
Thanks again! Love and miss the xda community...

[Q] Error flashing CM 7.1 on NC

I downloaded CM 7.1 stable for my Nook color, and when I go to install I get an assert error with a "status 7".
I've done a lot of flashing of ROMs on my DX, but I'm wondering if there's a step I'm missing. I've pretty much just done the usual routine for flashing a new ROM:
- nandroid backup
- wipe cache,system,data,dalvik cache
- flash ROM zip file
No luck for any ROM I've tried. Anyone know what I need to do to get this to work?
Go over the steps in my sig. If that's no help check out the links in it particularly eyeballer's and mrg666's.
Thanks, I'll try it out. Why don't the official CM7 and MIUI builds work?
Are there other Mirage Kangs I can try out? Any good ICS ones?
Thanks again,
Mike
Also, I'm assuming if I have CWMR already installed I don't need the boot SD, correct?
Same problem. I get
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "encore" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "encore" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "encore"
E: Error in /sdcard/download/encore_CM72_MiRaGe-06082012.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Does this mean I have to do the SDcard boot?
In theory you could put any ROM in place of M-K you wanted but if you are wanting ICS I would install using one of those instruction threads. All I was suggesting was that you go over the basic steps I outline to make sure you weren't missing anything.
And yes, it sounds like something got corrupted and you need to start from scratch. I would at this point. I always look at it as time to flush the old and try out some new.

So, I tried unrooting and doing a stock recovery, then using a boot-sdcard to flash any number of ROMs. I still get the same error.
At this point it seems something is fundamentally wrong. I tried several options on the flashing, nothing seems to get around this error.
Is there anything else I can do here?

When you say you were able to do a stock recovery, what did you mean by that? Were you able to flash a stock ROM to emmc with recovery? Or did you do an 8 failed boot reset?
Also, what version of CWM are you using?
The problem you are having is the install zip cannot verify that it is flashing to the correct device. If it can't find that 'encore' in your properties it will abort. I'm not sure where that property is stored on your emmc, but the zip is not finding it.

I'm using CWM 5.x (don't have it handy to check, I can get the exact version if needed).

Embedded Multimedia Card. The flash memory internal to the Nook Color.
Keep listening to leapinlar. Nothings broke beyond repair and he's teaching more than you in this thread.

Emmc means embedded multimedia card. It is basically an SD card built into the Nook. It is where all of your internal information is stored. It is partitioned into 8 partitions to hold various kinds of information, like the system files for your ROM, and data that is specific to your installation (application settings, your login info, etc.).
When you did the factory reset it cleared the data info, but not the system info. That is good if you want your stuff off, but it does nothing to the system files (including the root files). So someone else could put their info in and yours will be gone.
Somewhere on one of those 8 partitions is info stored that tells the zip you are an encore. (It's 1, 2 or 3, I just don't know which). The zip is not finding it. That could be because one of those partitions is corrupt. Or the data could just be missing.
If you truly did a factory restore, like flashing a factory zip to emmc, then the info might come back.
OK, thanks! Looks like I've got some homework to do.

I also think I had modified some of the system info when I originally rooted this thing. It's not my device, and now the owner (much father in law) wants more than just a rooted device, he wants the full tablet experience. And I like hacking someone else's device.
Long story short, I'm learning quite a bit here, so thanks...

Try looking here (post 148). It is a Stock Rom zip for 1.4.1. Try flashing that with your CWM. Use the first one. It still has an assert statement in it so it may also fail, but it is worth a try.
status 7 error
I'm on and a nook tablet and I'm trying to flash 7.2 stable, I already have CM7 Alpha on the nook which the install had gone smoothly. I tried to use rom manager which gets me to clockworkmod but I get the same error - status 7 when trying to install the cm-7.2.0-encore.zip that I downloaded from cyanogenmod.com.
I've tried downloading it a couple of times, I've tried a bootable sd card but I still get status 7 when trying to install. I've followed the install guide cyanogenmod's wiki to the letter but I cannot get past that error. Anyone have any idea what might be causing it? Right now I'm back to CM7 Alpha.

It's because you are on a Nook TABLET. CM 7.2 is for a Nook COLOR. They are completely different devices. If you want to brick your Tablet, keep trying to install this!

mikecico, are you sure you are on a nook color? They look almost identical, but the nook color has a black bezel and the nook tablet is silver. Like I said in my post above, they are different devices and that may be why the zip is rejecting the install. It's doing its job.

I just did a check on the model number, BNTV250. It's a tablet.
Sorry for the noise guys. I think he had told me it's a NC, and I used a NC root method successfully, so I had assumed that was correct.

[Q] Nook Color 1.4.2 refuses to boot to SD

I have followed every SD boot guide on this forum, and watched countless videos on how to do this.
I download the generic and/or CWM IMG, I burn the IMG to a class 4 SanDisk SD card. I copy over the ROM and GAPPS zips. Put it in the powered down Nook and fire it up. Nothing. Not a god damned thing.
I need someone to explain it to me like i'm 5 cause I am clearly not capable of getting this to work. What really pisses me off is that I had this thing rooted way back when I first got it, but have recently restored to factory settings. So I know its been able to boot to SD in the past.... I don't know what could of changed or how to undo it.
Any and all replies appreciated thanks.
