Okay, I'm still reeling from the results I got from Speed Test.net app over my provider's network.
The last time I ran a speed test was May 3rd of this month, not including tests done over WiFi. Results were as follows;
"2011-05-03 19:33","Hspa","45.52528","-73.70986",2776,1211,111,"Montreal, QC","xxx","xxx"
I ran three tests today, these are the results;
Date,ConnType,Lat,Lon,Download,Upload,Latency,ServerName,InternalIp,ExternalIp
"2011-05-30 07:00","Umts","45.52528","-73.70986",5078,1217,96,"Montreal, QC","xxx","xxx"
"2011-05-30 06:59","Hspa","45.52528","-73.70986",5086,1203,89,"Montreal, QC","xxx","xxx"
"2011-05-30 06:53","Hspa","45.52528","-73.70986",4574,1210,89,"Montreal, QC","xxx","xxx"
Now I have no clue why my download speeds doubled. I mean it's as fast as my WiFi download speeds. Could this be the new FW & BB? Or is it my network provider..did they do something right???

Same here, BB61 & 67 give massive improvement in signal.
At home was:
1 or 2 bars, "G" data
Now:
Constantly 3 or 4 bars and 3g or H data.
Basebands are location dependent. I would not flash it if it is not released in your region since it is optimised for particular regions.
My WiFi speeds have not changed in the least nor has my upload speed....I'm tempted to restore a backup and BB.55 just to see what's up?

Hello, I heard T-Mobile launched their new HSDPA network yesterday. I had a mytouch on the old 3G network and after doign a speed test i was getting ~110KB/s (thats kiloBYTES). On the about phone page in settings it showed me that my mytouch was on UMTS. (I live in NYC btw)
Now I have a Nexus One and T-Mobile has rolled out their new network. On my Nexus One about phone page it shows that my network type is now indeed HSDPA and no longer UMTS. HOWEVER im still getting the EXACT SAME SPEEDS as I did before on UMTS. What is up with this?
Ouch. Hopefully they'll work out the kinks in NYC. I almost always get around 3mbit in Philadelphia since they rolled out their new network.

I also did not notice an increase in speed in Des Moines, IA. I think they need to increase the backend support of the network. I am pretty sure the towers are enabled for HSDPA around here...
They didn't launch any HSDPA network, you we're all misled by some moron that completely mistook a tweet from TMOUSA.

Their network has been mostly HSDPA for a while now. It's still not 7.2mbps HSDPA. Any UMTS ("3G") are going to HSDPA (3.5G). Those are fairly hard to find, most of the network is already HSDPA.
I tested by navigating to www.mobilespeedtest.com. Using the app or a small test file doesn't show an accurate speed. At that site, I was able to choose a 5mb test file, and my peak speed was close to 4100kbps.
In a nutshell, I think that most tests use too small of a test file and the speed is still accelerating when the test ends.
my mytouch showed me 2 weeks ago that i was on UMTS, it literally said UMTS on that field. now it is showing HSDPA.

That site isn't accurate in the slightest, why people keep using it is beyond me. Use the speedtest app in the market. Some parts of Philly and NYC have 7.2Mbps HSPA already, maybe a few other places but it is NOT on a nationwide or even widespread scale.

Hmmm... well I guess I'm wrong then. But why would there be such a large disparity? With the speed test app from the Market, I'd get up to 700ish kbps... That's a HUGE difference, and I don't think that mobilespeedtest.com would be off by that much, would it?
I'm in Philly. I used to get around 400kbps on average and never more than 800kbps. About a month ago it dramatically increased. I generally see anywhere from 2.5Mbps to 3.2Mbps download speeds using the speedtest.net application from the market. I just ran the test and got a 103ms ping, 3.74Mbps down, and 1.08Mbps up (a bit faster than usual). I'd post a screenshot but am unable to upload from the android browser.
Strangely enough in the settings it shows I am on UMTS, not HSDPA. Not sure why my speeds would have increased so dramatically if I'm still on UMTS, but they have. I'm sure other users in Philadelphia have had a similar experience.

UMTS has a max speed of 3.6Mbps, so they probably have all of the backhaul in place for HSPA (Fiber) but it hasn't been switched up yet..

This is different. Philadelphia is currently the only test market that has HSDPA+. The rest of the country got HSDPA which is much slower.

Didn't realize we were the only market getting HSDPA+ so far. Strange that my cliq still tells me UMTS, but I guess as heygrl noted it's in place but hasn't been switched on yet. Can't wait until they do, because by then my Nexus One will have arrived
All of philly isn't HSPA+, only certain areas. The phone should be showing HSPA regardless, and if it isn't the tower is still UMTS (limited to 3.6mbps)
In Seattle, Fremont specifically, my Nexus One shows HSDPA in the status. Once I head a bit north outside Seattle proper, it shows UMTS.
Cheers,
Kermee
used to average 600 kbps in austin on my mytouch 3g using the speed test app... with my nexus one and the upgraded network i'm averaging 1 mbps, or roughly 1000 kbps downstream
Everyone,
T-Mobile is running HSPA in the entire network. Why your phone states UMTS versus HSPA is beyond me. Now, Philidalphia is the current TEST market for HSPA+, not to be confused with HSPA. HSPA + is capable of much much faster speeds.
Also, like the previous preson stated, only parts of Philidalphia have HSPA+ launched.
To add to all of that, in order for your phone to recieve faster speeds the cell site requires more bandwidth. As T-Mobile is continuing to expand their 3G netowrk, they slowly adding more bandwidth (more T-1's) to the 3G sites so some area's will see higher speeds and again, Philidalphia is a HSPA+ test market so those sites that have that enabled will surely have more bandwidth ran to it.
Lastly for clerification:
HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) capable of 14Mbps download
HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Packet Access) capable of 54Mbps download
HSDPA just adds a D for Download (High Speed Download Packet Access)
HSUPA just adds a U for Upload (High Speed Upload Packet Access)
Weird.
In areas where I have a strong signal (Max Bars) and the Nexus One shows "HSDPA" I get about 2.2-2.5 Mbps down using the Ookla App.
When I'm in areas where I have a strong signal (Max Bars) and the Nexus One shows "UMTS" I get about 1.2 Mbps down using the Ookla App.
All tested using the same test server.
*Shrug*
Cheers,
Kermee
Uhg! Okay maybe its me but I think people are not understanding Kb KB Mb MB. Kilobits, KiloBytes, Megabit, MegaByte.
If your Tmobile data connection is a 7.2Mb connection, you should be downloading at 921.6KB(KiloBytes) a second, if you go by kb(kilobits) it should be going 7372.8kb a second. So speed test is wrong or tmobile is jipping us the speed we should be going.
I'm using stock rom on the t-mo hd2 & saw news that they updated their network to the hspa+ in the Long Beach area. I was wondering if any one seen the speed incerease that live in or around the area. i'm getting max about 400kbs if that.
San Fernando Valley, Ca
I saw this speed last night.. I did not see it browsing on the phone itself.. My Internet service provider had their system down and I have to use my phone to tether.. hooked it up (USB) and I was surprise how fast my connection.. so I did a www.mobilespeedtest.com test and there I saw 7000kbps speed!! at one point I even see it 8000kbps. on a wireless tethering I was getting 6000kbps
im only getting 400kbps dl and a notably faster upload at 750kbps. no noticeable changes in speed here on the westside of lb as I have tested both my hd2 and vibrant.

My house is in a weaker spot (On both AT&T and T-Mo),
T-Mo 1 month ago used to be appx. 400k/s~700k/s
Now is close to 5000k/s !!
Appx. 10X more!!
PS. Max I got with AT&T is Appx. 1500k/s
I guess Long Beach isn't fully active yet. Been testing it all around Long Beach area. Still the same result. Those with the 5mbs+ download did you really see a different or was it just random spike when you ran the test?
orlando, fl with hspa+ tethering I downloaded at 4 megs. I love it.
It suppose to be in Anaheim now too....we will see. Right now I see a speed of 1.5 MB on speedtest.net
HSPA+
has anyone seen this speed on the phone browser?? I only see it when I tether.. i'm getting 777kbps running mobilespeedtest on Opera.

The real question for me is whether Mobile Speed Test is as accurate as some of the other websites referenced in this thread.

T-Mo HSPA+ in Orange County (HB/FV)
I do know the speeds in the OC have increased... Or at least I think they have? At work, cell reception in Santa Ana has gone down a little.
Using Mobile Speed Test.
Speeds from my phone (2MB) - 771kbps, 1430kbps, 1724kbps.
Tethering my phone to my laptop (2MB-5MB) - 7692kbps, 20408kbps
Even a few more numbers close to my highest, - 34356kbps See image.
Aren't we supposed to get a consistency in speeds, but particularly more speed when using my phone then tethering it.
2nd Tier Support is looking into it...
I got the vibrant about 2wks ago and using the speedtest app I was getting about 2-3Mbps at my house and other places in San Antonio; but now all I get is .05Mbps at my house and max of 1Mbps if I'm lucky when out and about. I called T-mo but they gave me standard line of depends on location and type of phone etc...but using same phone from same location my 3g should drop so much right? heck if I turn it to 2G only mode I get better speeds, and I have only used about 1.5Gb of data so far. Also when using speedtest app it seems to get my location wrong could the bad GPS be screwing with my 3G speeds? Any one else experience anything similar?
I too have encountered this, I'm in Birmingham, tried speed test shortly after they launched HSDPA and got ~ 2.5 megs down, but here lately I MAY get 1 meg.

My phone is returned waiting on a GPS fix or HS phone, but my buddy with a 3G Touch got between 1000 and 3000 at a fixed location, 4 tests in about 5 minutes. Very strange. Verizon was 300-500. AT&T was 900-1500. Tried a couple different speed tests, dslreports & mobilespeedtest.
hello everyone, just got my sgs2, its totally awesome. im using my sgs2 and sgs1 side by side, first i did a speedtest.net test, my sgs1 got 6.5mbps, my sgs2 got 300kb. then i was like ew speedtest.net is being weird, lemme try the app, similar results, so i was like speedtest server is whack, lemme download a 1080p video from youtube.. and thats where i started to realize, side by side the two phones downloading the exact same 164mb video, the sgs1 finished 2 minutes ago, but the sgs2 is still at 41% ... the speed they downloaded the video was sgs1: 9300kbps sgs2: 1200kbps..
why is my sgs2 downloads so much slower than my sgs1?
Does having a EU phone in USA might be part of the problem?
both my sgs1 and sgs2 are from europe, and both have the same bands
this is interesting, and hopefully not characteristic
did you try upgrading to latest fw via kies?
did you try swapping the SIM cards between sgs1 and sgs2 and testing that way?
Ok...
If I was in this kind of situation, I would probably do the following (out of desperation) and see, if any help:
1) Swap sim cards between phones and see if it makes a difference,
2) Hard reset the phone,
3) Flash newer/same firmware using ODIN...
If this does not help, I (out of even bigger desperation) would start swearing and wait for others to come up with better ideas
You are on ATT and not TMO, right? You don't mention anything about signal strength or whether you're getting H on the S2. Are they both set to Auto? Try setting the S2 to WCDMA only. I hope the signal strength on the S2 isn't so much lower that it's kicking down to GSM, with the S1 running 3G.
(sorry, just saw your ATT logo. ignore first ?)

both phones are full bars of H, i live 8 houses down from the AT&T so my signal is as ideal as it could possibly be, normally my mobile ap is faster than my DSL, so signal isnt the problem..

That ping time is absurd. Try changing speedtest servers. You may have been accessing two diff speedtest servers on the two phones. But the movie DL speeds are so different that's not likely the whole story.
(In Speedtest you can choose "Settings" then "Change Server" to select one near you. Can make a big difference.)

yes with the sg1 hehe, the i9000 one, i live in a really prime location, i mean i could take a picture from my porch and you would see a big AT&T sign, with 5 dozen AT&T vans parked out in front. as far as 3g in the US, my speeds will beat anyones, just not on my s2 =[

If swapping the sim cards does not help, try calling ATT see if they can help you trouble shoot it, maybe it needs some provisioning tweaks to get just right.

I've actually been noticing faster downloads on my SGSII compared to my first (both unlocked, same network and SIM).
This includes via WiFi too.
just picked up my new phone, however 3/4g data speeds are crap. speed tests come out at less then impressive (when i can do them) but real world performance is far bellow what the speed test says. i am pulling about 1Mb/s down and about 1Mb/s up (usually less but im rounding), now the fun part, if i try to pull up a website, it is slow as hell or times out. google market also times out 70% of the time. downloading a 1mb app can take upwards of 7 minutes as it pauses while doing this, facebook app usually times out or works for a few minutes and then stops receiving data. all this said, my battery died at noon today because my phone was constantly trying to sync with gmail, FB, google+, etc. if i watch the data activity icon it looks as if my phone repeatedly sends off requests but does not receive data back. i have seen that some at&t users with an unlocked i9100 are also having the same issues, but they seem to mainly be a apn issue. others are using root explorer to change some config files. am i alone? is my phone defective? or is this just my new galaxy s2 ruined by bell?

If I am correct, I think you should be able to experiment with the different modems avaliable for the SII.
For me the newest euro one has the fastest speeds, but that depends on the network and country you are in!

I did not have any of those issues so I think you have a dud.
Take it back before you start trying other fixes etc as that's what the return period is for.
I've used it since yesterday (Thur/21) and didn't notice any issues/problems with WiFi, or HSPA+ speeds.
Hrm... mind you I didn't actually use it on Bell, could be their network.
As soon as I got the sucker I rooted / unlocked so I could pop my Rogers SIM in there and it's fine on Rogers.
Actually there is one thing you could check before you return.
Do a *#0011* and make sure your WCDMA says 850 Band 5, if it says 1900 it will be as slow as *[email protected](.
How is it that you change it to 850?
My baseband version changed to XXKG2 when it was originally UMKG2. This is probably why I'm showing as 1900 band when I do *#0011#*.
I'll have to wait for someone to post the UMKG2 modem file.
Could be Bells network. I thought maybe the custom ROM I am currently using was to blame but I am experiencing everything you are with my sgs1 and have been for about a week now. I'm in Calgary.
Edit : Also I get the best speeds on 1900, 850 is only useful out in the mountains here.

Dude you do realise that this is quadband GSM and quadband hspda phone. This means if you are on 1900 currently blame your provider or maybe you screwed band selection which is easily corrected. I usually turn off euro GSM and 3g frequencies and leave only our 850 and 1900 bands to save battery so it does not keep searching for 2100 for example.

Bell throttles their upload speeds, haven't touched their download speeds as far as I know.
Speedtest gives me 800kb/s but downloading I get 1.2Mb/s.

Same boat. On Rogers network and only getting ~1.5mbps.

Weird.
I did not have any of those issues so I think you have a dud.
Take it back before you start trying other fixes etc as that's what the return period is for.

ok, i am running on the 850 band 5. i did notice a slowdown on my sgs previously but not the timeouts/drop data connections/etc. i just finished a factory reset and lost all mobile net access for about 2 hours but have it back now (kinda). popped my sim out and back into my sgs and am having similar problems with the sgs but not as severe. i guess i can chalk it down to network issues that started up within 5 hours after buying the new phone. talked to the place of purchase and they are saying the network is loaded do to "rib fest" which in all reality only pulls maybe 1k to 2k of people that are already up here cottaging so i have trouble with there theory that the local towers are loaded as really its only one tower thats loaded more than normal. love the phone, wifi speeds and page rendering is retarded fast. i was watching a 720p video streaming from vimeo through the phone and scrolling around the page, it stayed smooth as butter. i just want my mobile internet to work. past that, when i have been able to do a speed test i have got no more than 2Mb/s, a far cry from what the technology can do. I hate you bell!
I have by Bell Galaxy S 2 running with telus, I am getting between 2-4 mbps download, and 1-3 mbps on upload. I an only getting up to maybe 1mbps on wifi, download or upload. I am using a 2.3.4 custom Darky Rom.
I'm getting 3 to 7mbps download on 4g and 1.5 to 4mps upload. Purchased from bell. On bell network.
On my home wifi 16mbps to 19mbps down, 1mbps up right next to the router.
I am using KF3 modem(radio) and it has improved the speeds and reception.. slightly (5 to 10%) but i do find the wifi signal doesn't crap out anymore which as my problem.
Try KF3 modem, put the file on your phone and flash with CWM http://www.mediafire.com/?fnkld9swo6u99
keep in mind there is no official ROM for bell yet so if u flash custom roms you wont have warranty until stock firmware is released for it.
maybe u gusy are in low 4g coverage ares? im around the don mills and lawrence area in toronto.
first one is 4g, second is wifi
Its probably most likely bell. Its nothing but corporate ripoffs. If this was the U.K they would be out of business. I dont see anywhere near 2mbit in newfoundland either.
*#0011# showd 0 HSPA+ connections so im guessing either bell doesnt have hspa+ here or bell has severely crippled the provisioning in favor of their internet sticks. But even then when a person pays nearly 60.00 a month for an up to 42mbit connection, it states that average is only something like 5 to 8mbit.
I share the same slowness and timeouts as you.

It seems they have bad coverage there. Why don't you get people in your area to sign a petition for Bell to install some antennas in the area and send it to Bell... worth a shot.
I am on Sasktel and the data on the Galaxy S II is quite poor. I have been getting aroud 2.5 Mbps Up and 2.5 Mbps Down max, this is including build.prop edits. I have tried KH3, KH1, KG3 and KG2 with KG3 yielding the best results. These numbers are about the same as my Nexus S but the Nexus S yielded much more consistant results.
2.7Mbps down and 1.5 up with KG6 on Telus
8 Mbps down & 1 Mbps up - On Virgin Mobile, HSPA+
Try flashing the KH3 modem using Odin, it's said to work extremely well on the Bell/Virgin network.
Just put the KE7 modem on my phone, pulled the best numbers I've got yet and I have tried MANY modems. 6012kbps up and 2633 down. Will continue to test and report back if there is a change. This is on Sasktel with a KH3 based rom.
Decent speeds for me in Guelph on Rogers.
*edit* After seeing some of the above posts maybe it's not so decent after all. Maybe I'll try some other firmwares for kicks.
