[Q] Bugs after update and additional information - Acer Iconia A500

Long time reader, first time poster.
I've had the Acer Iconia a500 a few weeks now and here are some things that I want to share.
Fist off, information about my Iconia A500.
Purchased:
In Norway, where I live.
Model numer:
A500
Android version:
3.0.1
Kernel version:
2.6.36.3
Build number:
Acer_A500_1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3
One of the things I've noticed regarding the 1.141.01 update:
I was reading around this forum about people getting the update, so I thought I'd go check for updates to see if my Iconia had one.
After "Check for updates" manually, no update was avaliable.
First thing came to mind was "Maybe I have to registrer with Acer to get the update..?"
So I did, and after I registrered I went and checked for a update, and this time
I got promted to update.
I dont know about the rest of you, but I had to registrer with Acer to recive a update.
Could this be a reason why some have, and some havent gotten the update?
You need to registrer with Acer to get it?
It worked for me.
Now that that is out of the way, and my A500 is updated, here are some bugs that I've gotten after updating:
First off, a WIFI issue.
Before the update I had no problems with WiFi what so ever.
Good connection even with only 2 bars of signal.
After the update, I'm having these issues.
When my Iconia goes to sleep mode, and I hitt the power button to be able to ulock the Iconia, the WiFi Status says "No Internet Connection".
But as soon as I unlock the tablet, it connects again.
In "wake mode" I have no issues whats so ever with WiFi.
I get disconnected only when it goes to sleep mode.
It kinda seems like going to sleep mode, it "drains" the WiFi signal down to zero and disconnects.
Anyone else have this problem? Or a solution?
Again, this happend after the recent patch/update.
Another thing I want to add is when using the stock browser sometimes the browser lock up after 10% of loading the page. I can open more tabs, and restart the browser, and thay all stop at 10% loading.
I've tried disconnecting, then re-connecting to WiFi, no dice.
I've tried going to Airplain mode then back again, still nothing.
I clearly see in both cases that the wifi disconnects and reconnects, but it still has no internett connection.
Only way to fix this problem is to restart the Iconia.
Then it all works.
I understand the internet connection will from time to time lock up, and I have to restart the Incona but it seems to happen kinda frequent. A little to often.
I'm also having issues like the rest of the people here, like wakes up from sleep from time to time by it self, etc.
I'll wrap this up now, seems the post kinda got long. I just wated to add as much information as i could. There are more things I have issues with but I'll start with these.
If you need any more information, just let me know and I'll provide it.
Thanks in advanced.

I registered my Iconia with Acer pretty much as soon as I bought it, but yet I still don't have an update available.

1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 is what I have now, after the update.
Failed to check what I had before the update.
What I do know is that it was GEN3 before the update.

I would suggest checking your wifi settings. Make sure your Wi-Fi disconnect policy is set to Never. I updated manually with the US update and I have yet to have any issues with wifi.

Hey, thanks for the tip.
Never knew such an option existed.
I'll check it as soon as I get home (In about 8-9 hours) and give you a report back on the issue.

my is 1.135.02
i live in china.
i still can not get any update since i bought it two weeks ago.

This is probably a silly question but trying to narrow down our diferences.
To those who say they've registred, did you use the application within the Acer Iconia a500 to registrer? "Acer Registration"

No, I went to the website and did it on my PC because my tablet was doing it's first charge. To me that first charge is very important.

I registered my A500 the second I had a wifi signal (was on vacation in Malaysia when I bought it) using the Acer app on the tablet but I still haven't received an update. Its gotten to the point where I'm checking msnually every hour or so now. Still on 1.016.04 ATM. :/ C'mon Acer! I love this thing and I want to see it run even better!

I registred via the application "Acer Registration".
To recap;
I was trying to update, but could'nt. The message I got was "You're device is up to date."
Then I registrered via the "Acer Registration" application.
As soon as the registration was complete, I checked for updates again, and this time there was an update. So i did update and ended up with the 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3.

And I am staying still at 1.105.01. Such serial numbers can update and other no. I hope that somebody pushes button and update will be on the way to me too.

I used the Acer Registration app that was preloaded on my Iconia.

I used both method...no difference.
It could been just a timely coincidence when the OP register.

i had that same browser issue where it would stop loaded and the only way to fix it was restarting. I haven't had it since the update though.

[Q] Skype giving bad sound quality

Have anyone tested skype on HTC tattoo with Custom ROM ?
Or are anyone using it ATM?
I have recently tested 3 different ROMS:
[ROM] nFinityROM 2.2.1
[ROM] nFinityGB Gingerbread 2.3
[ROM] KalimochoAz 2.2.1
And I have the same problem with each ROM... The other person can hear me loud and clear. But I'm getting very bad quality, choppy, sometimes robot like and higher latency/delay between each us than normally.
Summary: I recieve bad quality but send OK quality.
Problem in how the ROM decode the sound or? Issue with Skype on Tattoo? How can we fix this?
Anyone could test this and give me some feedback? And help me out.
Problems in the Custom ROMs perhaps??
I've tested over Wi-Fi only, with two different networks, one 3-20Mbit and another at 100Mbit ISP connection. So the problem is with the Phone or the ROMs, i guess the ROMs! As I have a X10 Mini pro with excellent sound quality.
Other phones tested: My iPhone works perfectly over skype aswell as my other Android X10 mini pro.
Help me out!
Anyone else with the same problem?
Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem.

Anyone else? Solution or problem?
I had the same issue when I tried Skype. I didn't put too much effort into testing, though I did find the audio some what better when clocked to 710MHz. It still wasn't great. Have you looked at the CPU load when running Skype? Is the Tattoo up to running the app?

Havent tested clocking.
Havent checked the load either, howto do I do this?
No idea if tatto is up to running the app...?? But i would assume it is as the phone doesnt differ that much from x10 mini??? Or am i wrong?
Perhaps there is a huge difference...
Perhaps someone could compile a Rom that pretty much only has skype?
Hi,
I checked skype forum and many other android devices have this problem, even the powerful ones.
What I don't understand is:
Why when I was using skype over fring (when it was permitted) I had crystal clear audio even on 3g?
On skype I get often force closes...
I think the software it's just bad engineered
It sure seems to be crappy engineered. Tested with setCpu to ~630MHz and I hade quite an improvement. But it's still crap!
Anyone know how to modify skype? Force it by editing its apk fil to use lower quality "bit" call? Or know what to.. I'd like to fix it!!
And if i won't get it to work i will throw this crap phone out the window.
I wanted to have it as a "plugged in skype phone at home"
Help?

From a shell type:
# top -m 20 -s cpu
This will display the top 20 cpu resources, and the system load will be displayed on the top line, which I think are 1, 5 and 15 minute averages.
Skype works with setcpu
I've tried to work with skype on my HTC Tattoo but skype was very slow and doesn't work very good.
I've tried Setcpu and now it works great it works fast and sometimes in the beginning of the call it is 1 second bad and than it's great!
Just use SetCPU and it works put it on 710 mhz or somthing like that!
sorry for my bad English i'm from The Netherlands

It just work for me!

Have you tried any other ROM? Could you try dualbooting nFinity GB 0.4 and test?
Or perhaps make a skype call to a pc and copy the call tech details and upload them? -could have something to do with codecs in skype and ofc bad engeneering from skype team.
It doesn't matter how many ROM's you are going to try, it wont change unless skype releases a new app for low end phones
check out following post from skype forum, you will get an idea
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=762893&view=findpost&p=3211233
An Improvement suggested in following post http://blogs.skype.com/garage/android/ is
"Saving Skype for Android to an SD card (with Android OS 2.2)"
As mentioned in the above posts move app to SD and then tried to overclock while using the sound test under skype.
audio you hear is worse with cpu set at anything less than 610Mhz
I have increased upto 730Mhz it gets kind of better at 710Mhz and above
But it is not worth the risk it is not that great any way.
I am using [ROM] nFinityGB v0.4 with overclockwidget and i am using skype 1.0.0.659
You could try old apps from following web page
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/skype
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/skype-lite-beta
you might get lucky
According to the skype forum on wildfire many people have good skype experience in november, so may be old ones are better
All the best
Request to Moderator: Could you please move this topic to Click apps as it related to skype app
Hi,
No luck in clocking the CPU, sure I do get some improvements but it still sucks.
Tried some older version of skype but with NO LUCK
Haven't tried Skype Lite Beta though, don't know if it's worth it...
I assume skype won't make the app low-end android phone friendly...
Guess I'll throw the freaking thing out the window and get buy a used IPOD TOUCH instead.. ? =) Atleast that'll work fine ;p
Thanks anyway everyone. If someone finds a solution please send a PM or put it in this thread?
Still kind of disappointed when I couldn't get it to work :x
They have the same problem on high-end phones too, so I don't think it's the phone that's at fault, but merely a badly programmed app.
Aaaaaaargh for skype! Even the backgrounding is crap! Eats the phones battery for breakfast
Iphone backgrounding is so much better, superb is the word for it.
Still id like to use that tattoo as my home skype phone...
While Skype app is adapted to low-end phones...is there an alternative for skype voice now that fring and nimbuzz don't work with skype network?
Is there any news or fix for sound choppy for skype?
I'm using CM7.1 v2.3.4 and the latest Skype (in this moment) and my listener can't unerstand neither of my word, but I can here him clearly!

[Q] Thethering on CM 7RC0

Hello everybody.
It is possible using usb tethering (or wi-fi also) with this rom?
I can't find any option regarding that functionality.
Thank's in advance.
Nope, USB tethering in Gingerbread requires newer kernel than we have. Native wifi tethering has never worked, as the firmware for our wifi chipset doesn't support AP mode. There's a couple 3rd party apps you can try for wifi tethering though. Barnacle is one, can't remember the name of the other one.
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com works
Thank's a lot.
you're welcome, I got the tip myself from arco68s Gingerbread ROM thread.

Jag förstår inte riktigt frågan, wifi är trådlöst nätverk, wildfire är en annan HTC telefon, eller menade du firewire? I så fall, nej, det är bara wifi internet delning.
(in eng)
I don't really understand your question, wifi is wireless network, wildfire is another HTC phone, or did you think firewire? If so, no, it's just wifi tether.
Ok, works perfectly out-of-the-box (wi-fi, can't test bluetooth).
Just install from market and use it
Another chance: "android-wired-tether" (search in googlecode) works perfectly on CM 7002 and implements usb tethering.

fantastic to see dell users getting the update...
now if only there was a way to unlock em...
Strange. I went to see if I could tether and I was able to install the USB modem drivers but I can't get it to dial. Interesting though since beta didn't even give me the option to install those...hell it wouldnt even charge in composite mode.
If anyone gets theirs to dial, tell me.
Microsoft provided info on the timing of the phased rollout:
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...27/windows-phone-7-5-mango-update-begins.aspx
Basically 10% this week, 25% next. If all goes well everyone should have it within the next 4 weeks.
update done
no difference on system itself.

Currently down but here is the URL http://www.wpcentral.com/force-mango-update-early-through-zune-software
It seems the old “disconnect the internet“ trick from the NoDo days also works for forcing Zune to deliver the Mango update to your phone.
The step by step instructions are:
Connect your Windows Phone to a PC and launch the Zune software
Click on Settings/Update. Allow the software to tell you whether an update is available. If so, skip this guide. If not continue to the next step.
Click the check for update button again, and this time immediately disconnect your computer from the internet. Do this by pulling the Ethernet cable, disabling Wi-Fi, etc.
Wait 30 seconds or so and you should receive a notification that an update is available.
Now reconnect to the internet and continue with the update process through the Zune software.
Seems simple enough. Let us know if it works for you.

Click to collapse
Did anyone actually get a notification on their phone or just after connecting to Zune? Dont think there was one for Nodo either but want to confirm.

Hey nutnithin, I'm planning to buy a Dell Venue Pro in India (possibly from Flipkart). After getting one, what are the steps I should take to upgrade to Mango?
What can this error code C101007c be, when I am updating my DVP to 7720?
I found I cannot boot it up when the update is finished, what can it be?
Can anyone tell me what are the update contents? (7403, 7720 and firmware update?)

According to the Microsoft troubleshooting document:
"C1010007 Make sure that you are using the USB cable which was included with your phone.
Try to reconnect your phone to another USB port on your computer. Do not use a USB hub or ports on the front of your computer."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484484
Update contains OS update (mango) and firmware update (219).
The latest Zune software said I had an update yesterday. I let it remove the RTM version of 7720, install the "latest", and I hoped I finally had the Dell version on my unlocked, but AT&T version of the DVP.
But when I look under wireless networks, I still can't connect to hidden SSID networks. The option simply isn't there. Does anyone have that functionality after their update?
I should mention that when I ran the update, my sim was still in my Motorola Atrix. I did the update connected to my wireless network on the phone, and with the USB cord attached to my primary PC... an ASUS G73 laptop.
I updated late last night, but finding out this morning that I have no audio. I cannot listen to music, hear ring tones etc. Audio IS turned on. Could this have been a bad update? Should I reset and try again? I fell asleep last night while it was updating so something could have happened during that time.

I also thought of having a faulty cable. The phone turned off by itself when I touched it.
However I remembered that I have flashed the firmware 2.0 on the touch panel some time ago, that may cause the problem. After that I rolled back the update and flashed back the firmware to 1.6, the update was then successful.
Anyway, many thanks.

I updated late last night, but finding out this morning that I have no audio. I cannot listen to music, hear ring tones etc. Audio IS turned on. Could this have been a bad update? Should I reset and try again? I fell asleep last night while it was updating so something could have happened during that time.

I tried that but nada. When I do plug in my headphones I hear the audio playing. It must be the speaker. Anything I could do short of sending for a replacement?

[Q] mobile network is not working well

Hi all,
I'm new at xda forum, nice to see all of you.
I have new Viewpad 10s for a week and i got an issue on it. Since my first time i plugged my SIM card to this device until today i see the mobile network is not working properly. I already did the APN setting. Some times it does get internet connection (G,E,3G,H) some times it doesn't get any internet connection for a long time. i already try to disabled and re enabled the data setting but it can not make it work too.
Is it just happen with me or is there any one have same issue with me? is there any solution for this condition?
Welcome to the Vega Forum!
As far as i am aware this is a known issue. Vegacomb was not made for that tablet, it does contain drivers for 3g but not the ones for your viewsonic. There is a version knocking around called viewcomb. Of what i have read it has been ripped off from newbie5 work, Not cool!! But your choice to try it. I will not post a link as i dont approve of its use as its not been given the go ahead by rebel1 or newbie5 (or any of the other devs i have forgotten)
Take it easy

Thanks for your replay. But is it still happen when you are using stock ROM from Advent Vega? I mean is it an issue came from this variant or it just happen only on viewpad 10s?

Hi!
If you're using stock ROM you shouldn't update your ViewPad 10s thru the Advent Vega website because I think their ROMs don't include the 3G drivers (I could be wrong).
You should update only thru the official ViewSonic site.

Hope this helps!
There is no "Advent Vega" tablet that has 3g, so the firmware does not have it. As yani2000 said, best stick with roms made for your tablet
all right mates, thank you for your suggestion...
Report back if your 3G connection would still be failing after the update.
Then I would recommend to try different SIM card (preferably on a different network) from your friends/relatives.
i have a 3G Viewsonic 10s running on VEGACOMBS .. my 3G works beautifully but if the tablet goes to sleep for a period of time, once i turn it on again, the 3G will not be able to get a signal.. only way to fix it is to do a reboot .. and it works again...
Try to re-activate data connection or go into airplane mode or re-search for mobile networks instead of rebooting your tablet.
The Vegacomb is still beta grade software and not all bugs have been fixed.
Sorry, but I can't help you more on that.
thanks.. beta grade...
i am one very happy user..

I have the same problem that I did install the Viewcomb 3.2 and my Viewpad 10s does detect the SIM card. However, the 3G just does not work and there is not connection to the network. Anything can help?
