Hey there. This morning my device offered to get fresh updates, but failed to install because of some system .apk files deleted before, I guess. Anyway, I downloaded a full archive of default system files and tried to restore the necessary ones. However, the updating failed again and I applied data factory reset from the settings menu. The problem is after the reboot Acer is stuck at the welcome screen, offering me to choose a language of the system. There is only one box to choose a language and a "Start" button. Also, there is a 'back' arrow in the left corner but it doesn't help. Any suggestions?

Here's what Acer support answered me with:
Dear support,
this morning my device offered me to get an update;
however, it failed somehow, and I decided to go for factory data reset after searching over some forums. Now my tablet is rebooted and showing the welcome screen. I can choose any language it's offering, press the 'Start' button or ever the 'back' arrow in the left corner, but nothing happens. How do I fix it or is there a way to hard reset the device?

Dear Captain Anusthegreat,
Thank you for contacting Acer. My name is Able and Badge Number GWSI1194. I’ll be happy to assist you with this issue.
Captain, after reviewing your email, I understand that you are experiencing a booting issue.
The Serial Number XEH6LEN0121161C40E1500 failed to match any existing system information in our database, we recommend you verify the correct serial number which is a 22 or 13 alphanumeric character or 11 digit SNID number.
There is no physical label with the serial number on the Iconia Tab A500, but there is a label with the tablet's SNID number on the underside of the MicroSD/SIM card cover. Also, both the serial number and the SNID number can be found in the tablet's menus. To locate both the serial and SNID numbers, simply follow the steps below:
- From the Home Screen, tap on Apps, and then Settings.
- Tap on About Tablet, and then Device Information.
If it is Iconia Tab W500 :
The serial number and SNID number for the Iconia Tab W500 can be found on the lower left side of the back panel of the tablet. Also, the serial and SNID numbers can be found in the tablet's software menus.
To locate both the serial and SNID numbers, simply follow the steps below:
- On the home screen, tap on Start, and then All Programs.
- Locate and tap on the folder titled Acer, and then Identity Card.
We also recommend you confirm if the system was brought from US or Canada as we only have information about the systems purchased from US and Canada.
For further clarifications please feel free to visit our website: http://support.acer.com/
Thank you for contacting Acer.
Have a great day!
Respectfully,

Ridiculously failed imho.
Have you tried to ADB? Just plug your pc to your tablet and see if you can:
ADB SHELL
SU
if this gives you the ROOT #, then I imagine you can PUSH/COPY the files that you are missing (probably the phone.apk) onto the system.
Otherwise, I regret to inform you that as of now, the only recovery that is available IS the Chinese update.zip.
BE CAREFUL SINCE THE UPDATE.ZIP CHANGES YOUR BOOT PARTITION AND YOUR OTA UPDATES WILL STOP. There is a work around... we're working on it... jejeje
I like how you put "...it failed somehow..." in your original email to Acer and when they responded in a way that doesn't meet you're expectations, you get angry - with them!
Your actions are the kind of stupid **** manufacturers have to deal with all the time when people do unsupported things to their product. And what happens when you screw up and they can't help you? You ***** and whine and hold Acer accountable.
You screwed it up, take responsibility for your actions.
jeez, rascal, calm down.
@op, I had a problem similar to this on a froyo tablet I used to have. I was able to get past the welcome screen by tapping on each corner. I believe you need to tap top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left.
Not sure if this will work on Honeycomb, though. It's worth a try at least.

I'm all for 3rdP development. Totally. Root all you want - I will, when it becomes beneficial to me.
It's the irresponsibility of some people who take those steps, voiding their warranty, then when things go wrong they lie and point fingers at the manufacturer.
That, alone, is just wrong.
Yea, it is, but do you need to be so rude to him about it?
Yes because patting them on the bum and sending them off to play, wishing them well, just perpetuates that problem.
How about you turn your brain on and see the details of both mine and support's messages. I was asking about a concrete problem with the startup screen when the Acer manager is trying to explain me how to find out the SN through the menu (which is obviously not working for me since Android doesn't load), not a single word about the problem itself.
Thank you, Netham. I managed to return it back to the retailer and got another tablet now.
rascal, as he said, he was just asking them a question. He wasn't asking them to replace it, he wasn't asking them to give him anything more than an appropriate answer to the question he asked. Instead they went the route of giving him a 'We can't help you until you open a ticket, you can't open a ticket until the problem you have is solved' answer.
Guy's I'm not interested in reading how you rationalize irresponsibility and lack of accountability.
anusthegreat, it's obvious you're are all to willing to criticize Acer for their handling of your self-induced problem - a problem you created and one you didn't own up to them about, essentially blaming them. "Failed somehow" not even providing them with a correct account of the event. Then, given their response, you call it a fail.
I've been pretty clear about my stance and I won't hesitate to say it again. Like it or not, I honestly don't give a **** guys.

Hello,
First of all, I hope am posting in the correct location. Anyways, in windows mobile, we receive different tooltips, ex: call summary report from the provider, credit report, and many others, the ones am talking about are the tooltips that appear on the top right corner of the screen.
These tooltips are so annoying since the buttons they carry are totally not finger friendly. After using "Yota Phone" on my HTC Touch Pro, i noticed that they mapped/changed the default tooltips with the title "PHONE" with their own nice finger friendly one.
Is there any program that does such a thing? searched a lot and couldn't find any. If nobody knows a program that does this, can someone tell me what are the commands/code of those functions/events? maybe i would do a small application for that one.
Thank you

Find me a cure, please doc?
This is an awesome idea!!! I too am suffering from sausage fingers syndrome
I'm not exactly sure how this could be done but I there is another application on XDA that changes the way our Context Menus look. He does is via dll injection and my guess is that that is how to do this also.
This would be awesome, I hate those little popups as well!!!! Maybe you could ask francarl (creator of FingerMenu), your idea sounds similar to what he did.

thank you m.schmidler. I was thinking about how to replace standard tooltip. It will be very useful if someone finds which is the Win32 API (if exists) that opens the tooltip!
I would totally use this! Anyone wanna pick this up?
Great to see you guys interested in this idea, but wish someone could actually implement it. If only creators of "Yota Phone" would reply. Since they successfully changed the "Phone" tooltip.
If only they share the knowledge. already posted a question regarding this matter on their thread, but no replies on that so far.
I will look into this as soon as I get some time. I'm working on wFacebook for now but as soon as I release a new version (hopefully by this weekend) i'll do some research and post my findings.
Add me to the list of the intrigued.
while you're at it, could you have a look at the default windows popups as well? you know, the ones with that incredibly tiny and impossible to hit ok thingy in the top right corner? even *with* a stylus it is annoyingly hard to press ok.
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/miscctrl/ToolTip_Class.aspx or http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/02/15/373120.aspx do there help any? I am not a programmer! so if they don't help at all!

Oh, yeah those too are so damn annoying!
If there are things that amaze me in pocket pc they are the following:
1. PPCs are more than 10 years old, and we still have THAT FEW RAM with SUCH SLOW PROCESSOR?
2. A message to Microsoft, WTF are you doing? We here at XDA can create a better OS with MUCH smarter tools and you as an enterprise suck that much in your own OS?
Hope we get a fix / program for the tooltip AND those middle confirmation messages, like the one that appears when you try to shut down the device. Buttons are non user friendly and still needs a stylus. Idiotic menus/tooltips.
Cheers

So I thought I'd start collecting what sucks about the mandatory rom.
Please, restrict your posts to just the problems you're having with the rom, no ranting, *****ing or whining
If you need space to host your videos/pictures, let me know and I'll host them for you.
My problems with the rom:
Ancient 1.5 build (let's face it, we're not getting a newer one)
Home app is not responsive after being idle for a while (I've missed calls waiting for the phone to respond to my key presses)
Home app often hangs for a few seconds
The 'drawer' often doesn't come up for the first few times that you drag your finger over it
Screen corruption when you open the keyboard (see picture below)
Many problems sending text messages
The screen takes quite a while before rotating when you rotate the device or open the keyboard (see other pic below)
The number buttons stick when you're using the on-screen keypad (i.e. enter your voicemail password)
Sometimes multiple key presses are recorded when you use the on-screen keypad (i.e. instead of dialing 2, you get 22 or 222)
Some times when you flip between the home screens, the animation stops halfway (i.e. half of each screen) and resumes after a few seconds
Significantly reduced battery life
a lot of market apps refuse to install (old SDK)

It's not to complain about the phone, but to collect the bugs/issues in the latest build that was forced onto HTC Dream users on the Rogers network (hence the no complaining clause).

losing the reception
dont forget to add losing the reception and not getting it back...dint realize until tried sending a message dint go through.... tried calling ...dint work.... friend tried calling me.... goes to voicemail......... gotta fkin restart the phone to get the reception back....funny thing is...connection shows all the bars.... fkin hate rogers...
Another crazy problem they introduced: if you use a screen lock pattern and you SLIDE THE SCREEN OPEN, then it bypasses the unlock screen.
I'm starting to wonder about this build. The 911 patch was trivial, so what is the deal with all the extra changes (that make the thing less than usable)? Robbers does NOT create the builds... they are all in the hands of HTC, and we know that HTC is better at it than this.
I'm starting to wonder if somebody at HTC decided to stick up for people saddled with robbers.... by making a build SO TERRIBLE that robbers will be forced to order another software update.... hopefully to the latest.
called rogers and tried to get them to remove the flag they wont. i was able for him to escalate the problem, i gave many reasons why i wouldnt update from this thread. he said they have fixed the sms problems but nothing else.
just heads up for those who got stuck with the update and are having problems call in.

Can anyone who has performed the new Robbers update post the information on the About Phone screen (in the settings menu), specifically the (1) Build Number, (2) The Kernel Version, (3) the Firmware version, (4) the baseband version. Or just post a screen capture that screen? Thanks.

is there anyway to get rid of the lockscreen in 3.1 so when you wake the tablet you are on the last screen you saw. i can disable it on my phone with cm7 2.3.4 rom, and had apps that work with 2.2 or 2.3 but i can't find anything to work with 3.1. i know it doesn't take long to unlock it, it just bugs me that i have to everytime i wake it
No Lock worked perfectly when unrooted on 3.0.1 and continues to work with 3.1 rooted. I never lock the screen on my A500 since it does not fit in my pocket.
I tried to post a link but I am no allowed to yet. Just search the Market for "no lock" including the quotes.
You need to have a special feature called fingertouch
- Try to find the application FINGER on the hand.market.google.com
- Install It or Find a friend who have it already
Now you should see on your Real Life Desktop this

Looks strange no ?
Ok now get ready for the most hard part, require at least a doctor degree in information and technology
Your tablet should be locked as following.
Use your new feature TOUCH (it's installed with FINGER by default don't worry) on the screen of your tablet like that
then when your tablet is unlocked, you should be on this screen (may differ of yours but it's ok don't worry)
Now use TOUCH again on the top right of the screen (there is a kind of 6 square, 1 is one other are grey, and a text on the right side "Apps")
Now you are on this screen, you can slide from left to right or right to left, you need to find the SETTINGS icon, then use TOUCH again (I know you may hurt FINGER but after you will use to)
Then now use TOUCH on the text "Location & Security"
Use TOUCH again on Configure Lock Screen
And Finally use TOUCH on Off (never lock the screen)
and Here we are you just figured how to not install junk application and save time
have a nice day.
sanaell said:

then...
with your FINGER touch the screen, where it's write APPS (top right)
then SLIDE from right to left, until see an ICON named SETTINGS
Use again your FINGER to touch the TEXT "LOCATION & SECURITY"
Now that going to be tricky but you can do it, use your FINGER on CONFIGURE LOCK SCREEN
and press very very very very carrefully on "OFF"
I know it's kind of hard and very advance, but with this method you are sure about two thing....
your screen will turn off but will not be locked when you turn it on
you will save space by not installing junk application

There was no need to sugar-coat your response. That is a good tip. Thank you for presenting it so eloquently.
Since that option is not available on my Froyo phone, I did not even go into the lock screen menu on Honeycomb because I did not want to set a password or pattern. I should have done more exploring.
No Lock uninstalled on my A500 but still necessary on my phone.
Could you please provide a Market link to the "FINGER TOUCH" app that you mentioned? I am unable to locate it. My insatiable girlfriend has expressed extreme (and urgent) interest in it.

Hi there
so I should not have asked this as a Q/A thread. I was hoping with the update they may have fixed the issue but no such joy. Hopefully someone has a work around or a fix:
I have been looking for a replacement for my Moto X Pure (because I am idiot and lost it). I liked the specs and the price of the Axon7 (having an support for an external SSD won me over vrs One Plus). Anyways I should have checked here first as there is a serious limitation for my use case. I use my phone for my work. Due to the way the work policies were setup we have to enable the password for Android start up. And as some of us have found out the hard ware that option is NOT supported with the current OS on the phone. From what I have read the phone is pre-encrypted so this option was removed.
My question (I know finally) was is there any way to get the start Android password working? I heard something about the un-locked boot loader but not sure if that is the ticket. I am not sure why the folks at ZTE removed that feature/option. Without getting this option re-enabled I have no choice but to send this phone back (take advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee) and look for something else... other than that I really like this phone! As always thank you XDA members!
Here is what I am seeing:

But when you try to touch to change the setting, it takes you to the area where you set/reset your screen lock password. And you get stuck in that loop.

From all I have seen, the startup password protection is not present on the ZTE rom. You can hit up the official forum mods for an answer, give them the app that is causing this so it can be verified. There are instances where people were prompted for password on startup after installing and wiping in TWRP. This is most likely the Android Device Manager suspicious behavior protection based on wording of the prompt
http://en.miui.com/thread-324522-1-1.html But i don't think this can be made a permanent prompt
peramikic
thanks for the info. I ended up calling ZTE tech support on this issue. And after some digging they came back to me with "this is a know issue and we are working on it with no ETA yet" reply. So hopefully that will get some traction. The personal question is do I want to wait for them to fix it? Or should I return and get something else to support the cooperate work needs. But that is more of a personal question I have to answer... Thank you again!
Same problem here - I would buy this device but work requires the PIN (and no root) so currently not able to purchase. This and the lack of T-Mobile Wifi calling in current builds are the big blockers for me. I don't have trust to purchase until both are addressed. Hopefully that is soon as the new Google "Pixel" phones next week (despite the higher likely cost) are the alternative option to me right now.
This is far fetched, but some removed settings like screen on time are accessible through custom launcher activities like SOT. Maybe worth a shot?

This is the screen on my junsun v1 pro when I go into the trip computer on my Peugeot 208 1.4HDi. The gear icon (ringed in red) asks for a code when I tap on it and I cannot find a code for this anywhere. I have no idea what it's for since the other 2 screens just have a clear button to reset the trip memory. I assume there are some settings but since I can't find the code, I have no idea. If anyone knows what this code is I would be grateful!!
[edit] I have tried all the obvious ones: 8888 8878 1234 5678 etc etc etc
As per usual, post Android system information including MCU version.

I assume this means that no-one here knows, or can hazard a guess. I posted the question in the wild hope that someone might have the same setup and know what the code is. To be honest, if you don't know what the code could be then I doubt that the system info and Mcu version will make any difference unless you have a magic key to extract it.
I don't have access to the car just now but, if it will make any difference I'll get the info when I do...

Usually it's better to post your question in a thread related to your head unit because many users will get an email with your question.
Most users will not read a thread with the generic title "any ideas please?" because in most cases it only contains a thrown down question asked by a lazy user.
Please install this tool

and open the screen you posted in your first post.
The app will show the technical name of the app (package) and the technical name of the screen (activity).
Package name should be com.ts.MainUI but activity name needs to be provided by yourself to allow further investigation.

It means you haven't provided enough information and crystall ball not working. Perhaps the seller might be a better choice for support.
Looks like the question wasn't important enough to provide further information.
Sometimes I wish to be an admin with the authorization to delete whole threads.

Oh dear.
It would have been useful if someone with the same setup had happpened upon the question and know the answer. Every other feature works fine so I didn't expected someone to put in days of work to solve the issue and, honestly, I'm not that worried about it.
FWIW I have not had access to the car since last I posted the original question, so have not been able to get more info. I realise it was probably very rude of me not to say that before but the post had dropped down so many pages I assumed it would fade into obscurity, like an 80s rock group.
I don't really want to get into an argument here, TorstenH, but are you a little bitter? Do you feel the world is treating you unfairly? It's the only reason I can see for that last post from you. I don't spend a lot of time on this forum and when i went looking for my post it was, something like, ten plus pages down so, as i said, I assumed it would be forgotten. Lighten up.
