i thought n1 had 720p playback

i have a video thats in 720p. its avi which the n1 couldnt play so i renamed it as an mp4 like the other movies on my phone but it still wont play, the phone "cannot play this video"
I use doubletwist but it wont sync this video so i had to just click and drag from the folder to the sdcard
Is the problem that the n1 cant playback 720p? Am I not transferring the file properly? Because i was under the impression it would play 720p...Ive had three android phones and trying to play videos on them has always been like flapping my arms to fly, it never works and i feel stupid for trying...thanks for any help

I'm no expert, but you can't just rename a file to encode it in a different format. I don't know what double twist is, so can't help there.
Android hasn't been good for video playback, but all my videos that I encoded down for my Hero play much better on the N1.
The fact it wont play the 720p video files you put on there doesn't meen it can't, it just means you need to encode them into a format that the N1 likes.
I think the biggest problem is the amount of data the video uses per second compared to the amount of data the N1 can get off your SD card. Is it class 6?

The problem is the video is in the wrong format and the Nexus One doesn't have the proper codec. No you can't add codecs to the Nexus One. You will have to find software to convert it into a format it can recognize.
The supported video codecs for the Nexus One are on the Google Nexus One website.

Um.. you do know that N1 and the Passion are the same device, HTC first gives their own personal code names (from my understanding) to devices they create. I'm assuming whatever company asked for them to make the device then gets to rename it, or just keep the name (like the HTC Hero).
For example(s) the HTC Dream, is the G1, the HTC Sapphire, is the MyTouch. The HTC Passion, is the N1.

And myself I don't see anything wrong with saying HTC G1 either.
I understand your point, I just think mine is an HTC device that people call the Nexus One, so it's an HTC Nexus One...
I also have in my sig HTC Universal, wasn't that called the JasJar by HTC?

Staying on topic, in my understanding android by default cannot play .avi files. As AndyCr15 mentioned, you can't just rename a file and expect it to magically reencode itself. Just like how I can change the Ford badge of my Ford Focus into a Porche badge doesn't really make it a real Porshe does it?
You'll have to get yourself a video file converter and re-encode it to the approriate format.

^what they said. it's done in the wrong codec. there are avi files it will play, i believe, but it can't do divx or xvid right now encoded avi files. you need to find an h.264 something encoded avi.
doubletwist 'should' be able to do conversions for you. but, it takes forever and a day. probably faster to do it with ffmpeg. google for instructions

Archos 5 android internet tablet has the best media player but i don't know if anyone can extract it and make it work on N1.

Use handbrake to transcode your videos to mp4.
Just use the iphone profile, but make sure to change video resolution since iphone screen is smaller.

He's is talking about 720p even if you try to play an 720p Mp4 it wont play

I reencoded the shuttle video from youtube in 720p and it plays without a hitch. (its already in .mp4 container on youtube, but still needs to be encoded)

yea i take that back think something was wrong with the mp4 vid i was using all i got was sound no vid at just re encoded wall-E 720 and plays fine

um guys. I hate to break it to you, but seeing how the screen resolution of the nexus one is 800x480, it is very fundamentally incapable of displaying 720 lines of vertical resolution.
Sure, you may have a video that is 1280x720, and the nexus one may play it, but it's scaled.
It's like hooking up a 15 inch lcd monitor to your computer and watching a video whos resolutions is 1920x1080, you can't say you're watching it in HD, because your display doesn't support an HD format.

@kyleroden — we kind of realize it will be downscaled to fit the screen
but if you dont feel like transcoding (which takes time) and have enough free space on the sd card, why not leave the vid as is?

It shouldn't be that hard if people can rip the Nemo Player from the Acer Liquid.

Think the reason why many 720p mp4 files won't play on the nexus one (or even iphone) depends on what encoding profile was used to encode the stream. The 3 mainly used encoding profiles are "baseline", "main" and "high". Anyone worth half their salt would encode 720p material in the "high" profile since is supports more bells and whistles like b-frames etc. and is normally intended to be played on a HD screen/TV with a more powerful player/decoder/PC etc.
The majority of mobile players don't really support the "high" profile since it requires more processing power to decode compared to "baseline". So chances are most 720p and higher materials need re-encoding for it to play unfortunately. Well since you are gonna transcode the stuff anyways you might as well set it at the correct resolution since the encoder software is going to a much better job scaling than on-the-fly scaling on the nexus one.

So is it a codec issue or a hardware limitation? I was expecting a 1GHz Snapdragon to be capable of playing back 720p h264 videos.. Yes I know the N1 doesn't have a 720p display but it would be convenient if transcoding videos weren't necessary..

converting movies to mytouch 4g

I'm not sure if this is posted or not but i use Xilisoft program to convert videos. What should I used to get the video full screen on my Mytouch 4g because it very tiny when i upload a video.

I have all kinds of movies on my phone that play full screen. And they are either .FLV or .AVI.

did you convert them or what? mine seem to be all tiny and not the full screen i dont know why

I just use arc media from the market to watch videos. Don't need to convert anything. It plays divx, xvid, avi, you name it. Plus it's free.

I am officaly going to say hello to all since this is my first post. I have been watching XDA for a while. I had the first G1 fully rooted with CM and enjoyed it a lot but now I just got the MTG4. I LOVE THIS THING!!! Just a small intro! (And yes I have it already rooted!)
I am also using arcMedia from the Android Market to watch movies. It works well so far. I have tried a few avi/divx files and no problem.
Another program from the Android Market is I have also tried that works is RockPlayer. Not sure which one I like best but I have both for a while and will be switching back and forth.

So you guys just transfer the movie you don't convert? If not doesn't that make the movie file bigger? But I tried just transferring the movie and using those videos players you said to dl but yet it still not full screen dont know what im doing wrong. Sorry if i keep bugging everyone with this.

The media players listed will play your files without you converting them. Your conversion has made them tiny. Just copy em to your phone as is.

There's built in support for xvid/divx if people hadn't noticed yet. Hardware decoding in the latest generation of snapdragon, yay! I just tried xvid and it played with the default media room no problem

I tried using the default media room on a movie downloaded from the internet and it wouldn't play it - ArcMedia played it just fine.
Is there a max resolution that the video needs to be in?

I didn't do anything special. Just grabbed an xvid file from eztv and it played no problem.

I did a test and moved three movies to my phone. I tested them all in the media room and only one worked. That is why I use a video player.
In each of the players I mentioned before you can change the size of the video to your screen.

Movie conversion
Hey guys I am having trouble with any player playing my converted movies. I am using the Divx Plus converter. I wonder if there are any other ones you could recommend.

dont convert the video. try using it in the orinigal format, see what happens

This phone doesn't really play very many movie files, sadly. Coming from the Vibrant, this is upsetting...

of the reviews i read, a lot of them said that video support was hit or miss, presumably on the stock video player. on my phone i use rockplayer, it can play everything i throw at it, without having to encode.
is rockplayer in the tablet market or can you sideload it?
if so, does it scale properly, and can it play most anything?

I played a few AVI's with no issue. Haven't tested mp4's, though I think the native player handles those.

Downloaded fine for me, was really choppy so I enabled hardware decoding in the settings of rockplayer which made the video extremely smooth but the audio didn't work. I know it works fine on my computer in vlc. it was 720p MKV, high quality encode. That was all I tried, it didn't play the avi. Though I played an avi in another program and it played fine. But I assume since Rockplayer was able to play the video fine with hardware decoding enabled it should work good, not sure why the audio didn't work... could have just that one mkv but thats all I have tried.

i don't have too many mkvs, mostly avis, so yay.

The only thing I don't like is the inability to play high profile h.264 video and all my video is high profile.
There is no reason Tegra 2 shouldn't be able to play videos that my 3rd gen iPod Touch can handle without breaking a sweat.

I read all the comments about the bad quality, and them tried AVI on rocketplayer and it looks amazing. the only problem I'm running into is the volume not being able to change.

I am not having any issues really playing movies with either the native player or Rockplayer. Though, most of mine are MP4 files.
If you bump into file type issues where you have one kind that works great, but another that does not I would recommend Tunebite. It can take any video and make anything out of it... as long as your PC can play it, it can convert it. DRM junk included.
I used to have an iPhone (hangs head in shame) and had taken a few movies from Blu Rays download copy thing and put them into iTunes (hangs head again in shame). When I went to Android (stands ups proudly) I needed to bring them over. So, Tunebite to the rescue.

Well yeah that's transcoding the videos. Of course that works - it lowers the bit rate and takes hours to do. Its really sad that a 2 core CPU and a 8 corr gpu can't decode high profile 720p video. I can't get the zoom to play anything my Streak can't. Pretty sad and disappointed now. Some how the notion ink adam can though.

This may sound completely stupid, but how do you play video on your xoom? I mean there isn't even a dedicated video app. How the hell do you release a tablet and expect it to compete with the I pad without a native video player or support for most video formats? I just transferred a couple of avi files that don't show up anywhere because there's no app to play them.

Theres an icon on your homescreen that says gallery. It plays movies as long as they are supported format. Try rockplayer universal it will play avis

Great just what I was afraid of. I have almost a 1TB of movies/videos/TV shows. So my only options are to convert them all or use a non tablet android app to play unsupported files. Thanks for the info though guys.

mkv high profile will not work on Xoom with any current player and I tried them all.

Ya i just tried a couple of files i had already converted for my moms ipad. a couple were DVDrips and those played pretty much fine using rocklayer. But one was a converted 1080p music video. The music video played fairly well but there was a noticeable difference in the frame rate from the standard def videos.it wasnt at all choppy but it wasnt as fluid as i would have liked. If this is what im going to have to expect from HD video then im definitely not sold on this tab.

It is certainly not what i expected. Hopefully it can be fixed with an update or app.

i downloaded dvd catalyst 4 online it was 9.99 (normally $20) and has a preset for motorola xoom
just load any dvd into your computer click go and when its done it will have you connect the xoom and transfer it
then click on the gallery app and there it is. the quality is great too

You can use Handbrake, a free video encoding program. I found that redoing h.264 high profile to h.264 main profile(see the link) and dropping motion estimation method to diamond, Subpixel ME & Mode Decision to 0, and avg bitrate to 4000 kbps makes for a lower encode time(20ish minutes for 1 hour on my i7 920 win 7 64bit). Excellent quality too vs original.

I'm attempting to convert a 720p copy of inception using handbrake right now. (6 hrs estimated time) what a pain in the ass. I set it to the APPLE preset. Which I'm hoping/assuming is what one would use for the ipad. Ill let you guys know how it turns out. If it does work won't be so bad as I can just set a bunch of files to convert in queue while i sleep.

Iceytea posted a handbrake preset for Xoom. I am trying it now and it is going much faster. 2 hour 720p movie took me 1 hour estimated with Apple universal preset and with this one 45 minutes. Can't comment on quality yet as it is still converting.

mkv works with stock player as well just have to convert it to baseline. High profile mkv works with nothing on the Xoom. I tried them all.

Dude, the SDK was just released this week. There will be a tablet optimized app within a month or so... your video files are not wasted.

[Q] Local HD Playback and Clear.Fi

I'm still entertaining picking this up instead of the Asus Transformer but I saw two things recently on a video that discouraged me.
1) Local HD Video
I've heard MoboPlayer can tackle most formats so that helps a bit, but what is HD playback like on the device? Does it stutter? Does it have a hard time playing anything 720P or perhaps just 1080P.
For some reason, the lady had a really hard time playing 1080P on this thing.
2) Clear.Fi
I haven't seen a review that actually covered this feature. This is so important to me. I sold my iPad because I wasn't happy with it. I loved Cydia and having XBMC on it though because I could pretty much watch anything.
I was hoping Clear.Fi was going to make me forget about XBMC but I haven't seen any videos on Youtube or heard people discuss Clear.Fi too well.
What's your experience been like? Do you have problems streaming specific types of files? Does it convert on the fly or does it only stream specific file types?

I'm still considering buying the A500, one of the points I had noticed was a statement from Acer that 1080p playback on the device will be available via a future update. If I recall it's due June/July

to OP.....Yes no one has touched base on the clear.fi features but from my experience just mp4 files.......and it streams over your wifi network so there isn't any converting on the fly since it only plays mp4's but it will see avi's and wmv's but will not play it ....it says cannot play format unknown hopefully when rom developement progress may some how we would be able to watch other formats like video codec installs but it kinda sucks because all my vids need to be converted to work which is sad lol

Have you guys tried streaming with the help of a File Explorer and a video player like MoboPlayer.
I remember I was able to use the File Explorer on the Gtab to find videos on the network and then watch them with my choice of app.

Clear.fi is just a transport as far as I know. In essence, it's an app like upnp that sees shared compatible media across your network. It then allows you to use a media player on the device to view the file.
So for example, if you have Windows 7, media sharing enabled and put videos into your Windows 7 Video library, music in your Music library and Photos in your Pictures library, clear.fi will detect it all over your wifi network.
Because of this, I don't think it has any hard limits as far as what clear.fi will play as it depends 100% on what your tablet hardware and software will play. For now, that's just mp4s using a certain profile when it comes to videos. Some mkvs will play too as those are just wrappers. I've also seen a thread where someone has claimed to play some realplayer files I think. I myself have played mp4s that are smooth as silk in both 480 and 720p and I have had others that were extremely jerky. This has to do with profiles which I don't have the details on. I can tell you what I THINK it means, which is that mp4s come in several "parts" and that the newest one which compresses the most data is referred to as h264 which the device can't seem to play well at all. I converted a 720p movie and left everything in tact except for specifying the resolution needing to be up to 1280x800 and for it to be in MP4 format and it played flawlessly. I use a program called Freemake. I haven't attempted to convert any 1080p.
I have an intel quad core 6600 with 8GB of RAM and that took 40m so there's no way I'm converting my entire library however it's no problem converting a few movies and maybe a season or 2 of TV in prep to hit a roadtrip or do some sort of travel. I also have an Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll membership so I don't even really need to do any of this.
This isn't a brand limitation afaik, it is due to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. We know Tegra 2's hardware can support a myriad of formats, but we don't know if Nvidia has released a full Honeycomb dev kit yet and since Honeycomb isn't open like Froyo and GB, I'm not sure if it will be indicated on Nvidias site when it is released - for all we know it's already in the various tablet manuf. hands so we just have to be patient. So far the promises for updates in June by both Acer and Asus have me hoping that the 1080p upgrade is a sign of more supported formats and some fixes as well.

Yeah I've been having major problems getting HD files to play at all- converted 480p movie to mp4 had no problems, but can't get the same converter app to spit out a 720p to mp4 file except in mkv container format. Keeps insisting on 4:3 ratio on mp4 files. Once I get it figured out (if I do lol) I'll post the app & settings

Every Tegra2 device has problems with 1080p, 720p and anything encoded with h264 with main profile and high profile (so with almost any HD video out there). So it's a problem on A500 but also on Xoom, Trasnformer and other tablets too unfortunately.

Every Tegra2 device has problems with 1080p, 720p and anything encoded with h264 with main profile and high profile (so with almost any HD video out there). So it's a problem on A500 but also on Xoom, Trasnformer and other tablets too unfortunately.

Not every Tegra 2 device, every Tegra 2 device with Honeycomb.
Tegra 2 has been out since last year and a number of the ones shipped with Android 2.2 don't have an issue playing HD video in any format. For example, this is what the GTablet by Viewsonic supported:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Mind you, I don't know if the native resolution has anything to do with it as that has a 1024x600 resolution, I do know that it played 95% more files than my Iconia does.

Do you reckon the stuttering will be fixed with an update, and when do they usually come out?

I have been doing this to help stream content and it works like a charm.
1. Download UPNPlay from the market
2. Download Rock player from their web site (the one optimized for the tegra 2)
UPNPlay detects your server and will allow you to browse your contents and will play the video with Rock player. since Rock player supports a slew of codecs you should never have a problem playing anything. I even threw a .OGG file at it and the tablet played it with no problem. Also note that the quality (lag) of streaming HD content depends primarily on your home network.
The Clear.fi app sucks...

Thanks man. You saved me $5. I was about to buy PLEX because that would take care of most format issues but I'll try this first. Appreciate it!!!
* Just tried it. Worked like a charm. I enjoy being able to pick from all the video players I've got installed but everything on my server is playing easily! Thanks again.

You still cant play mkv h.264 right? From what I have read on xoom and gtab forum its a hardware issue and not software.

Yeah I play mkv with no problem using this method. The problem is with honeycomb not with the hardware. Try it out and let me know if it works. Its been working for me.

I would agree on clear.fi sucking. I've been using Skifta with the standard WMP12 media sharing in W7 and it works great.

Its a hardware issue and every tegra 2 device has this issue. You source is not hd 720p if you can play it. Tegra 2 can only play substandard H.264 baseline profile videos and its still choppy. Most people are using MPEG4 to get reliable play back with tegra 2. Read any of the xoom & Toshiba tab forums.

I actually went to edit the post about it not being a hardware issue as soon as I posted it but couldn't because I had to wait due to me being new to the forum. I didn't have the proper information to make such a claim... Either way I have not ran across a video that I wanted to watch that I couldn't. I have been mostly watching anime on it (hi rez MKV) but I will try out an hd movie when I get home and report back.

so is it a hardware or software is that the device can't play back movies smoothly and can it be fixed?

ok so I checked out a few movies yesterday. All movies were in HD. 50% played fine while the other 50% played but with so really bad hiccups. The files I had less issues with were MKV that were displayed at 720 and were a smaller file size (probably not true 720P). 1080 video murdered the tablet lol. I have had 0 problem playing HD anime but again they are smaller file sizes. This method will play all non hd video without a hitch. Hopefully this issue is fixed shortly in the next update but that is me just being hopeful.
