Hy all
I have a strange problem with my X10! The will not go off in a call! (or at least most of the times it won't) The sensors should turn the screen off while the phone is to to my ear but most of the time it will not!
There is a hidden menu that have tests for almost every hardware component but the test for the proximity sensor only shows that the sensor is OFF and won't do the test!
Ideas?
The sensor is the little black circle (sort of) above and to the left of the "n"
e.g. Sony Ericsso'n'
Have you tried putting your finger over it during the test?
same problem here i tried the finger-trick doesnt work
I tried it and the test shows ON while my finger is there! So the sensor works properly but why the dialer is not using it to control the screen?
As stated before, if you cover the 'hole', the screen would not react to any of your finger touches. The screen would still be on but would turn off according to your settings (like 30 seconds or 1 minute or whichever). Try it. Call someone, cover the hole and try to hit 'end call' or slide up the keypad and then cover the hole and try to hit numbers.
The purpose of the proximity sensor is to turn the screen off in a call while the phone is to your ear! if i cover the sensor it must turn the screen off! but it doesn't! There is some kind of timeout set to this! The screen will turn off but after some time! this makes the proximity sensor almost useless!
No, it is to disable touchscreen buttons. It will turn off when time you've selected is over and turn on again and enable touch buttons when you take the phone out from your face.
Though i think you're right, it should turn the screen off to save battery, it is silly to have the screen on when you are using it.

Quite right!
I guess the expectations are again set by Apple's standards. Their proximity sensor functions as one would expect.
However the sensor on the X10 does what it was designed to do, and that's to deactivate the touchpad whilst the device is held up to your ear.
The screen timeout is a different setting all together (unfortunately).

Not the expectation set by Apple. It's expectation for any right minded individual.
SE software is just well known as one of the worst top players in the industry.
FFS, they spent all the time on DRM, lock the phone, developing battery hungry useless software on 1.6 rather than push out 2.1 asap, that tells you something.

Why not go through the Manual once before abusing Company left - right.....
Let me copy and paste it for you guys........
Sensors
Your phone has two built-in sensors – a light sensor and a proximity sensor. The light sensor is used for automatic LCD backlight control. The proximity sensor turns the touch screen off when your face touches the screen. This prevents you from unintentionally activating phone functions when you are engaged in a call.

Yes and this is plain stupid use of the sensor! Take the HD2 for instance! Its proximity sensor turns the screen off the second you take the phone to your ear! This is done with every HTC device having the sensor! It is just misused on the X10! I hope that somebody here would correct this with a little program some day!

This is the main problem with us ,,, we start to compare and complain rather than think why did SE will give two sensors instead of one.
Answer is not known to me but this much I know they know better than us.
If you think you know better, be my guest and throw some knowledge here. I am new to Android but not to SE.
So im new to the forums, but I was having a problem with the proximity sensor...
As stated in a lot of threads, the proximity sensor does work and will "lock" the screen so that once your face is near the screen it will not allow any clicking of the buttons.
Also the screen is supposed to turn off about 15sec into the call. Mine turned off, but then all of a sudden turned on again...this would happen repeatedly.
I found out the solution...it seems advance task killer was not allowing the screen to turn off.
I had auto kill enabled and set it to when the phone was locked to kill apps.
I turned off auto kill, and everything seems to be working fine with the screen and proximity sensor now..
hope this helps anyone having this issue!
thx, same problem here !!
so its pretty clear none of us know the answer to this, but yet we're still bashing each other. LOL! ppl let's get constructive, we dont have the answers so lets accept the fact and seek help some where else.
o2 Germany told me, that Sony Ericsson will bring us an update within the next 4 weeks to all devices.
It will be an update with alot of bug fixes (e.g. proximity sensor ) and speed improvements.
So, be cool. Sony Ericsson is working on that and with Eclair in autumn, our battery will perform very well.
I know many people are having issues regarding the cases that wake your device. A supposed fix is to turn on wifi or bluetooth. I just noticed today that if you're using a custom kernel with doubletap2wake or sweep2sleep/sweep2wake, that enabling either the doubletap2wake or sweep2wake fixes the issue as well. The screen auto wakes using my Slimline if that option is enabled. I feel like this is a step towards narrowing down what the issue is.
Actually, I flashed a kernel with those features because of my wake issue and it didn't fix anything at all for me. It was exactly the same, which I expected. It was annoying, though, so now I just leave Bluetooth on and call it a day. I'd rather leave Bluetooth on all the time than have to double tap every other time I open my cover.

I've had doubletap2wake on all day. Airplane mode on. Works every time. The moment I turn off doubletap2wake--the issue pops back up. Maybe I'm just lucky/unlucky?
I always read around the forums that everyone has problems with the magnetic wake lock, but my supcase works perfectly fine each time I open it. I'm even running CM10.2 Kang FLO version. Could it just be the cases people are using?
Highly doubtful. If it was something where the case would intermittently work all the time or it was something that only happened if the case was folded back, then maybe it is the case.
In this case, the case works all the time until there is some wifi event or the unit goes into deep sleep under certain situations.
The case is a simple magnet. It just needs to be strong enough to be recognized consistent. It has no idea about those states.
FWIW Google/Paul mentioned they were able to duplicate the problem and are looking into it.

Rather than using airplane mode, have you tried leaving bluetooth off and WiFi on but setting WiFi to sleep when the screen is off? That's how I can reproduce it consistently.

Dammit. That did it. Oh well, I was wrong.
How i solved the wake lock/ lock screen hang issue
Guys I solved the issue you will not believe how simple this is lol.
The issue isn't hardware or software for that matter, YES NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR DEVICE, but rather the cases themselves. My issue was that the device would lock whenever i had the case folded back in either Landscape or Portrait mode. Whether watching a movie or reading my books/ comics
I tried toggling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi no success. :crying:
However, I realized that using the Tablet in the case while it was in "standing mode". The screen would never turn off. So I tried something and took a leap of faith.
Instead of having the power button inline with the magnetic strip on your case, i just turned it upside down i.e. swivel the tablet so that the power button was no longer inline with the magnetic strip. I held the edges near the power button as hard as i could and it never once turned off lol. :good:
Yet as soon as i turned it back to be inline with the strip it turned off instantly with every try. After several exhausted tries I am certain that this works and solves the issue. as a matter a fact once you remove the magnetic strip side away from the power button it doesn't hang up, the effect is instantaneous.

Glad you fixed your own issue, specific to your (badly designed) case. This thread is about the 2013 Nexus 7 not waking after being asleep for a while, using the magnetic case sensor.

Sometimes I have to knock knock twice in a row to turn on the device. It works well turning off, but on half of the times it won't turn on. Gotta do it twice. Anyone else encounter this?

I do not have that issue, but I have read in a few posts that it can be dependent on where you are knocking on the screen.

I think the biggest issue is knock speed.... mine works damn near 100% when I slowed down some, and knock slower like it showes at the end of the G2 commercials....
I think it's partially related to the proximity sensor. There are times when I can't get the knock on to work at all and when I hit the power button the screen shuts right back off.
Usually a few swipes over the sensor makes it work again. Sometimes I'll go in and turn the Knock On gesture off and back on and then it seems to work great for a while too.

This is my exact problem. The phone just decides it doesn't want to wake up with knock-on...but after I press the power button, it only turns on for half a second and it's out again. I never tried swiping over the sensor, but hopefully it works because it's mighty annoying when it does it during a call!
I wonder if there's a fix for this?

this, if you are trying to do it like you did on the nokia n9 or nokia 8800 then it won't work
slow deliberate knocks are the only way
waiting on the g2 to arrive, but on my review unit, knock knock wouldn't respond correctly if i left the phone on the table, but if i picked it up, it would work nothing scientific here just an experience of one person and one prototype
I had the same issue... What fixed it is: 1. I found that the screen protector was hindering it somewhat. 2. Go to settings->display->screen-off effect-> and change it to simple. This REALLY seemed to help. Let us know!

I did notice it does seem to behave better when set to simple for the screen off animation.
My screen protector does have a cutout around the sensors. Keeping the sensor area clean enough to qualify as having OCD does seem to make it work properly the first time, every time. Maybe it's overly sensitive?
Edit: Scratch that. 30 seconds later it's behaving erratically again. Maybe it's not the fact that it's clean, but the swiping over the sensor that temporarily resolves it.
it also seems to work much better when knocking at the top of the screen where the statusbar would be.
So I ended up swapping the phone out over the weekend for a new one and now everything seems to work just fine. Seems to indicate that it's not a software problem, but rather a hardware issue with the proximity sensor.
Guys if your covering the sensors when turing the device screen on it will turn right back of on you. It's a feature LG implemented so the device wouldnt wake up in your pockets. Don't cover the sensors.
Need a little example? Grab your phone and cover the sensors and knock knock knock. You can knock till the cows come home but it will not turn on. Same thing goes for the power button but its a little delayed and will turn the screen on for half a sec and turn right back off. Practice not to do this because your phone isn't broken. There is actually a thread on this deep in the forums somewhere but its been forgotten now.

This is true however there are indications of problems with the proximity sensor as well. Some of the devices are behaving as if tree sensor is covered even when it's not.

Thanks for this.. Very insightful.. I tried it immediately LOL
I had the same issue. I have no case or screen protector on, and was not covering the sensor when trying to wake the phone. For some reason though, knocking wouldn't wake the phone, and pressing the power button would only turn the screen on for a few seconds. I want even given enough time to get past the unlock screen. I went into the store and they are sending me a replacement that should come in later this week. It doesn't happen all the time. It is much more noticeable after receiving a call though.

Definitely is dependent on the proximity sensor. If i just have my thumb on the edge of the phone by the sensor it will display this problem. Even with my finger a half to one inch above it will do this. I will be paying close attention to the proximity sensor from now on when it doesn't work. Still have a few days to return and thought i had an issue but maybe not.

sometimes its also greasy fingers, at least in my case, rarely though
As long as you tap twice the same place it's working fine. If distance between first and second tap is greater than 1 - 1.5 cm it won't work.
Got the same problem on my d802...when i left the phone on my table for 2-3min it wont wake up on first knock knock even power key wake it up for 1sec after auto turn off again....even with no screen protector....i noticed that sometimes there is a delay about 5-10sec after knock knock and screen turns on....other thing i noticed when i knock on immediently after turning off it works 100%....BUT i also noticed when i knock on after a while it turns on and i can unlock got vibration and sound of the unlock but i cant see anything. Screen looks like its off but when i look closely i can hardly see widgets and when i set effect to tv out i can see the effect by pressing the power button...when i press the power button again screen turns on like normal...i noticed sometimes on a rerboot the lg bootlogo disapears the led is working an showing all colors but the boot animation is gone like the screen is off at the bootup...dont know why after the bootup the pin lock screen is showing up normal....sorry for my english^^
I went to the Moto app and turned off the ambient display and I've noticed that for the past 12 hours my screen hasn't been lighting up anytime I jiggle the phone
That's basically what it's supposed to do. The screen will turn on and display the clock and notifications whenever you pick it up. It'll turn off once you put it back down.
i realize that but it was causing my screen to turn on when i wouldnt be touching it or when it was in the dashboard holster.

That's because it relies on the gyro to detect when you're lifting up the phone. Sometimes, when you unintentionally move the phone, the gyro triggers the ambient display.
Its not a perfect system, and a lot of work needs to go into it, but for most users its fine. Best part? You can turn it off if you don't like it.
Cheers.

I bought a used V20 with a defective screen. I change it, everything work for fine, but i notice a strange behaviour with the second screen.
The second screen is always on and i can unlock it by only touching the finger print sensor. BUT at night (or in the dark), the second screen turn off and i need to press 2 times on the power button to wake the phone.
The Knock On feature doesn't work too in the dark.
The light sensor seems to work correctly.
I would love to post a video but i can't......
This is an issue or it is normal ??
Thanks for your help !
Sounds like Doze.
I don't find anything related to Doze or "standby" about this screen.
check "daily timeout" on Show when main screen off. Seem u turn this function on at night

Sounds like there is an issue with the proximity sensor (not light sensor).
It's setup to turn the second screen off as well as disable knock on if the phone is in your pocket. Even during daylight hours if you put your finger within an inch of the sensor when the main screen is off, it should trigger it.
It seems your sensor may just be messed up.

There are a few apps on the play store you can try to fix it if you are rooted. You could also try a sensor app to see if the proximity sensor is showing feedback properly although you might need to be rooted for the apps to show the proximity sensor properly (not sure). My note 4 had a hardware test in the service menu not sure how to do it on V20 though.
Same Issue
Edit: Resolved the issue. Please read this post. There is a small rubber gasket-type thing that sits in the hole of the phone's frame where the proximity sensor is positioned. That rubber gasket was not included with my replacement screen. I pulled the rubber piece out of my original, broken screen, and installed it into my replacement screen. I am no longer having issues with the phone in the dark.
I am experiencing the same issue. I have a T-Mobile LG v20 (H918) and I cracked the screen last week. I ordered a replacement LCD assembly and installed it myself. Everything works fine during the day or in a well lit room, but at night, in a dark room, I experience all of the issues you are reporting. I am finding other posts online with our same issue, but as of yet, no resolution.
Even though the second screen is set to always be on, at night, in a dark room, it turns off almost immediately after locking the phone. It is almost as if the phone is in a "deep sleep" or something, because the following also occurs:
Knock On will not wake the phone
Fingerprint sensor will not wake the phone
Even connecting to the phone via AirDroid / AirMirror the phone doesn't wake
Need to press the power button multiple times to wake phone
Providing a light source immediately turns on second screen and resolves all issues
