I've had the Asus Transformer since it was released and got the keyboard as well once it was available. I never really liked the way the Transformer looked with the bezel, and really found the extra keyboard kind of pointless. Anyways, yesterday I went to my local Staples and checked out the Iconia A500 and here are my thoughts, the build quality on the Acer is actually better than the Asus, I didn't care which one weighted more but screen quality was very important to me, luckily, the store had a Transformer on display as well and after some comparing I found the screens to really be on par and viewing angles/colours are just as good to the naked eye on the Acer as it is on the Asus. Overall though I thought the Acer Iconia A500 is a better choice than the Transformer if like me, you don't care for the keyboard. Aesthetically I like the way the Acer looks better and also feel that the build quality is a bit better with the Acer. So I ordered one from Staples and will be selling my Asus Transformer + Dock.
I'm just worried at the frequency of updates from Acer as I've owned other Acer products before and they are not the best when it comes to Support, as well it seems that development for the Transformer is moving a long faster than for the Iconia.
Acer is a directly partnered with Google while Asus is not, but Asus seems to be more community friendly.

I can't find a Transformer to compare the screens anywhere. I noticed the Acer's screen is kinda washed out or muddy looking. How did you see the blacks and contrast between the two?

I think you miss the point - both Acer and Asus are on that list, hence both are partner with Google (at least for handsets as it says nothing about Tablets).

acer is at the top of the list, because the list is in alphabetical order. not because they have any preferential treatment or are more "in with google" than any other member of the OHA
true, that technically is for "cell phones" but thats all android was originally for.
i havent been able to see anything anywhere about tablet manufacturers specifically =\

I didn't really look at the blacks I was more comparing viewing angles and colour reproduction and like I said, I can't see much of a difference between the two tablets. To be honest I didn't really care much for how real the blacks are as this was mainly a gaming/surfing tablet and wont be used to watch a lot of movies, I much rather enjoy watching movies on my 60" TV. Build quality wise the transformer just felt so cheap after holding the Iconia, I also really don't like the power button on my Transformer cause sometimes it takes me a couple presses for it to be recognized, while the power button on the Iconia feels a lot more precise and feels like it will last. Basicly just small annoyances with the Asus, and since the hardware is almost identical as well as software, I really think it comes down to if you need the dock or not, if you don't then by all means go for the Acer, I also got the Acer for a very nice price as well $429.99 for the 32GB version so that was a major plus.
Thanks for your comparison. How did you get the 32GB version at that price? That is a great price.

That's sort of an apples vs. oranges comparison.
Both are Google partners, but this has nothing to do with how frequently they get updates. The oha is an alliance of Google partners which simply means they officially get Googles android 'code', open or not and Android is built with these companies devices/components/drivers built in.
Those NOT in the alliance must wait on public code (example, viewsonic, etc.).
Regarding updates, recently, Google is encouraging an 18 month update pledge which from what I've read isn't 100% clear, not to me anyway. The pledge seems to be more focussed on handsets, not tablets per se, and really is just a 'best practices' scenario which they are trying to push throughout the collective that is the oha, and while the oha does include tablet makers Acer, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung, etc. it doesn't mean it applies to tablets since they all do/will also make handsets. Assuming Google DOES intend for it to apply to tablets, that still doesn't guarantee a thing because getting different partners to follow any kind of a timeline just isn't feasible, not even if perks are on the menu.
We can only hope that each company sees fit to adhere to a best practices scenario, spurred maybe by customer 'preference' for/toward those companies who do issue updates on a more frequent and timely basis. For example, the whole Samsung debacle where the carrier Galaxy S phones weren't updating until months after promised caused fallout with many customers - then what happened? Samsung now seems to be the first to update their phones with new firmware, even doing it through Kies (vs. the carriers) and in response, seem to be the hot sellers of the Android smartphone market right now with millions sold in weeks. Likewise, Asus and Motorola are showing that they are on the ball with updates, more than likely in order to entice customers to feel 'safe' with investing in their brands.
I don't expect Acer to let us down....not especially since they seem to be in it for the long haul.

Not so sure about that.
Viewsonic say they will be first to market with a 7" Honeycomb tablet, and there is no public Honeycomb source code.

Well just ordered my Xoom.
Had a poke on the Otterbox site and thinking of ordering one of them (Got the commuter on my DHD) as well as a matt screen cover (again on my DHD).
Then I came here, thinking perhaps I should of done that first as there seems to be mixed feelings about the Xoom, I mainly decided on the Xoom as it was the only one with 3g that I could get at the time..
Maybe I should of gone for the Flyer or A500 instead

The Flyer is an interesting looking device but the screen is significantly smaller than the Xoom (7 inch vs 10 inch), and it is running Gingerbread rather than Honeycomb. Also, it's bootloaders are still locked tight so rooting and modding will be an uphill struggle.
The A500 is a nice machine, but a bit heavier than the Xoom. Also, I have had bad experiences in the past with Acer which tends to skimp on Design and build quality at times. However the full size USB is a nice addition. On the minus side, the dev community for the Iconia is not nearly as far along or as active as here with the Xoom. In addition it is still waiting for 3.1, which if you are in the US your Xoom will have via OTA right out of the box or it is easily added using XDA guides.
I feel you made the right choice ordering the Xoom...and I agree, Otterbox cases are the gold standard, the crowning touch on a great device.
i have had the otterbox defender case for the xoom since early last week. it ROCKS! bullet proof construction. can be configured in a couple ways, ports are secured by flaps. they took the time to get this right. worth the money spent and the time to wait on it.
Not in the USA, in the UK so no OTA for me, guess I'll be checking out the ROM's soon enough, dont think I've had a device thats been supported here thats had stock ROM on it for more than a day after it arriving

Me too! It will replace my not so bad Gtab
I was looking for a small device, but so far the smallest announced is the LG but it doesn't have GPS and the price point isn't that great, one of my friend have a Transformer, it's a nice unit for the price but it feel too big!
The Flyer is't as powerful as the Tegra, and other model where bigger, beside the accessory for the xoom seem interesting!
Not sure yet what I am going to do with the gtab, I might as well keep it to have a testbed for rom flashing, not sure!
anyhow, ordered from costco in canada, so I have plenty of option in regard of exchange or credit (I expect the canadian version to follow the US pricing down to 499)
The reason why I am upgrading is that I want to use the encryption on the unit, I can't help to think about the nightmare if It got stolen!

I returned my A500 for the Xoom last week and haven't looked back since. The Acer is heavier than the Xoom but it actually feels lighter because of the weight distribution on it. Overall the A500 is a very nice device but since Costco had the Xoom on sale for only $20 its an easy call.
The pros for the A500 are the full size usb connector and working SD card slot.
The pros for the Xoom are the software updates, dev support, and more accessories to name a few.

Whats the deal with custom ROM's, same sort of thing as the phone, unlock, root, clockworkmod?

Since HC sources are not available, ROMs for the Xoom focus can only focus on overclocking, optimizing and adding small features but I can say that BigRushDog's work really adds to the performance of my Xoom.
BigRushDog (BRD) creates the Tiamat kernels and custom ROM (along with Solarnz and the rest of Team Tiamat) and is definitely the one to watch as far as custom romming on the Xoom currently.
Also keep an eye on the Launchpad kernel by TDR as well.
Whata bout the dreaded Tegra HD playback issues, that sort of thing fixed in the customs, what about the SD card slot working?

i personally hate Samsung products, the quality is cheap and they always break very easily. As well i think the xoom looks alot better and if i'm not mistaken it has a 5mp camera vs. the 3.15mp on the tab 10.1.
I had a Samsung N220 netbook, was ok tbh but the complete lack of support from Samsung was enoguh to put me off any of there stuff again..
The reason I went for the Xoom was for the 3g in the end as its the only Android tablet my supplier had in that was 3g, I would of looked at the Transformer but they dont stock Asus...
My requirements were, in no particular order.
Expandable storage
Bluetooth
Wifi
3G
Media Playback
I was also looking at the Flyer but they arent getting stock of the 3G one until the end of the month and I want it before then..
Xoom seemed to tick all the right boxes..

3G is pointless with a 4G Thunderbolt to tether to.
Galaxy Tab has better battery life
Screen is WAY better.
32GB internal is plenty of data for me, I had a Xoom for 3 months and never used the SD Card even after I rooted and installed the kernel for it.
Dont get me wrong, I loved my Xoom, but I think its outdated now. Its big and bulky, and has a sub par screen.
Just my opinion, but I think my SGT is ALOT nicer.

Try this experiment, that I did, only don't use your GT. I went into a BestBuy and tried to flex/twist the iPad2, Xoom and Iconia, The iPad2 and Xoom were solid, no give. The Iconia flexed and creaked. Let us know how the GT fares, but use a display model, not your personal GT.
As far as viewing angles go, I've not found the Xoom to be problematic as once the angle gets extreme the viewing experience goes down hill because of the angle, not just the change of image quality. Although I wouldn't complain if the Xoom had an IPA or equivalent display.
flyer is extremely laggy

goto best buy, and slam the ipad2 on the ground. Does it break?
Point is, im careful with my devices. Im never going to "twist" my tablet. Its thin, so yes, its vulnerable. Luckily I am careful. If you want a brick to make sure you can twist your device without it breaking go for it.
hey guys
planing to buy new acer iconia a500 tab
but i have couple of questions before buying it
as samsung tab 10.1 : does it lags too much?
and how is the touch interface as compared to ipad2 ??
It not lags too much. All tegra 2. but i suggest you to buy galaxy tab 10.1. It feels so good and the screen is much better than a500. At last, if u have enough money to buy an iPad,don't buy android tablet. There are too many problems with it. Due to my poor English, it's just a suggestion. Maybe my explanation is not clear.

No, your explanation is VERY clear. You just haven't a clue what you're talking about
if you want to be sure, i think the best is to go to a store and try the different tablets you may be interested in (iconia, galaxy, ipad).
everyone has its own tastes and its only a few models for you to try (3).
all i can say is that it's worth its price (a little less than 350 euros in France for example) and that when (if?) ICS is ported to iconia (with hardware acceleration of course) it will be smoother than it is now
WAIT FOR TEGEA 3.WAIT FOR TEGRA.
Did I mention if you wait a month or two tetra 3 will be hitting stores. This will drop prices on tetra 2 devices.and offer a even better android experience if you are willing to spend the cash.
Goodluck and .wait wait wait.

The Iconia is excellent. Mine doesn't lag at all, even on stock it didn't. Also the touch interface is just as good as the IPad2.

The currently available Samsung tablet is like the ipad.It will break looking at it to hard.
So in sure they both will fallowhe same suit on the new coming out tabs.Idont like having the glass go to total outer redge one tiny drop or bangnd its broken.acer has more protection and feels stronger in your hand.the saw goes for comparison on computer laptops made from both companies.

will the Gateway TAB TP a60 run ICS, as gateway is a subsidiary (sorta) of acer?... I just bought one for a decent price but it might go back to the store...my sister is looking for something to take notes at school and to do basic tasks on, either she will use this or the blackberry playbook (with an android app loader handrite notes program...if it works)

+1 on that.. this is still the best tablet in my opinion. I even bough the thinkpad tablet with the active digitizer and returned it to stick with my iconia.
After enjoying my Nook Color with CM7 for about 8-10 months, I decided I needed a fully functional tablet. After striking out at Staples this morning, I found a refurb with a case on Best Buy's website for $270. Can't wait to get Thor's ROM up and running on this bad boy once I get it on Wednesday.
So is it only a matter of time before we get it?

Hm, now that's interesting. I guess we can more-or-less grab the A200 ICS ROM and slap it on A500. Camera likely won't work, but everything else should. Not bad news, not at all.
ICS on A200 Experience
I was over at the STAPLES store on 2/9/2012. They had the A200 on display which had ICS. I played with it for around 5 minutes and it was smoother than my current A500 with stock Honeycomb. It was fast in normal usage and browsing like my HP Touchpad with CM9. The feather I liked on the A200 was the added rotary GUI. By pressing the round button/dot at the lower middle of the screen, a rotary dial pops up allowing you to control volume, settings, and programs. I can't wait until we get ICS on the A500.

even if/when we get it, dont expect the ring. thats part of the a200 3.2.1 rom as well, and the a500 doesnt have that. they have it to make up for the lack of dolby mobile, rear camera and docking port (possibly hdmi out as well, i cant remember).
To me this shows how acer feels about there existing customers. I am leaning toword the a500 might not get the update. The a500 should have been first . But of course because its been replaces financially its better for acer to take money from new customers instead of Supporting the existing and NOW QUITE FURIOUS Ones.. I would imagine that Acer, like any other company, is in business to make money. It makes good business sense to upgrade current models before older ones. The update will help it compete with the xooms and transformers out there on the same shelves. I wouldn't say this automatically rules out an update for our A500s. The A200 seems to have slightly simpler hardware as well, so less work in making the update, less bugs to QC before public release, etc. I would give it another few months before unleashing the Hulk rage. My SGSII and my Tab 7.7 are still waiting also and Samsung has a bit more muscle to develop with. All good things to those who wait.... (I hope)
I have seen my fair share of these threads pop up all over xda within the areas I frequent, I seen it with the captivate and att with the gingerbread update, I seen it with the the locked down boot loaders on the evo 4g. Yes good things do happen to those who wait, I believe that there was an article with an official statement from an Acer rep that Yes ICS will be pushed out to the A500 and that other smaller tablet but it will happen most likely after the newer devices have been updated. And if Acer doesn't put it out then there will most likely be a developer come along that will be able to build it for the A200
Haven't yet seen the update on my A200, and system update isn't showing it.

As always, these updates are released cyclically, one area gets it first, the next a few days later and so on. Could take up to 2 weeks for your area to get it.

That's what I thought too, both are after all Tegra2 with the same resolution and all. One thing that could cause issues is if they have different partition layout, but I don't see why Acer would've messed with that without a reason.
The main difference is the lack of the rear camera, and I assume the 2MP front-facing one is different from the one in A500.
Since the A500 is no longer available in many stores, makes sense to be selling current models with the latest Android version otherwise punters will go with a "more up to date" tablet from a competitor. We will get the update next, and quite probably sooner rather than later.

And it looks like Acer America says A500 and A100 will have ICS starting mid-April.

Since there´s no dedicated section for the A510 (at least I can´t find any) I decided to ask my question here. Many apologies for this.
Does anybody knows if the A510 come with a Gorilla glass I or II or without?
Edit:
The Acer homepage as well as GSMarena didn´t have mention of what display type is on the A510

Well, considering nobody has one, and nobody has done a review on one, and Acer only showed a glimpse of one earlier at the CES convention, I would say....
Who knows....
I'm hoping for gorilla glass VI. After seeing them drop a 20kg from 50m on that tab. Wow! Man, the glass didn't have a scratch one!!!
.....tablet was flattened to a pancake though...
The tablet would be a good steal if it comes with a gorilla glass.
Chat with Acer
I decided to ask Acer directly because info on web is unclear. Here are the relevant parts of the chat:
Gayathri S: Hi, my name is Gayathri S. How may I help you?
Beth: I would like to know if the new A510 has Gorilla GLass like the A500 does?
(pause, wait, get coffee, wait for info to be looked up, voila!)
Gayathri S: Now a days all the models in Iconia Tablet has Gorilla Glass display.
Beth: Excellent news! It's unclear and some reviewers have speculated that it does not.
Beth: Any word on actual shipping dates?
Gayathri S: unfortunately, I am sure about the shipment dates. Once it confirmed you will get the information through online.
Beth: Ok, thank you for your assistance.
So, take it for what it is I'm hopefully my amazon pre-order will ship soon.

That´s a funny response. Not confirming if it has gorilla glass or not but making a general assumption.
Well waiting for the availability in Germany as it seem it´s now available in France and Luxemburg.
yep,
i just got mine in france yesterday.
some hundreds of tabs were delivered by acer all over france, really tricky to get one, with pre-ordering only.
only one vendor has, nothing online.
playing with my new toy, waiting for a dedicated place and rooting solution !

Zero issues following a review from a user in the Amazon store.
http://www.amazon.com/review/R1PGJ6...e=UTF8&ASIN=B007E8TWPU&nodeID=541966&store=pc
Well let me start off by saying I am quite pleased to be the first one to be able to rate this awesome tablet. I've owned the original Acer Iconia A500, the Asus Transformer, the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab and liked them all, but this, obviously is the next generation of tablets. First off, the price blows the (somewhat inferior) Transformer Prime out of the water. Insiders (as of 4-16-12) have told me that the Prime has been discontinued this month but news has not hit yet. They will be making this up by producing the T300 which will be a prime at less money the way it should have been from the beginning.
This tablet does everything it should with the amazing speed of quad core tegra3. The screen is crystal clear and the viewing angles are quite deep. There is plenty of memory with a cheap way to get 64gb out of this by getting a microsd card (32gb). The wi-fi is strong and the gps has zero issues with lock or signal. Sound is very nice in stereo and sounds expensive for such an inexpensive unit. All in all a great buy and you should not hesitate to buy this for its amazingly inexpensive price!
Update: The tablet, hooked up to a 56" lcd tv streaming hd movies works perfect with no issues.
I also had it hooked up to a wi-fi hotspot from my phone through Sprint to use google maps in the car and it works very well.
I already had a chance to drop it on the ground accidentally and it fell screen first onto pavement and not a scratch on it. I wish there were already cases and protectors for it but have to wait on those. Again, I wouldn't hesitate. That video review right below my review seems to be of a defective unit.

no issues at all.
i got a replacement one, because the first was defective (random reboot, freezings..)
but the new one works perfectly..
The wifi is good but my GPS doesn't work at all. I ran a speed test with the speed test.net app connected to a cable connected wifi router and it averaged 10 to 11mbs. Only had 3 out of 4 bars. The GPS issue kinda sux cause my a500 had a bad GPS unit in it to. I always have my phone but still. May send it back for repairs .. and I think they have already found a rooting method I'm just waiting to decide if I'm gonna send it back or not before I try it
No lucky
My a501 was quite good on gps, but the a510 is definitively better. I've got a capture even inside my house.
This tablet has been out for a while now, it would be much appreciated if the mod in forum can get a dedicated thread for the acer iconia tab a510.
Its not fun going through the Tab A500 thread for information and review of A510
Iconia Tab 510 forum please
I second that.
