Why are you posting this in the Atrix forums???
Doesn't mention the Atrix anywhere!!!

People here are just so touchy o:
It states that the first three devices are the Captivate and those others, and says that "select" devices will receive the update. I see no good reason why the Atrix would not be a "select" device, being that it's still one of AT&T's major Android phones. Just be patient.

Not touchy. The OP is saying after reading this article that the Atrix is one of the phones. It is not mentioned anywhere in the article. Nobody is being touchy. People just need to stop posting "assumed" crap and post facts. Other people need to stop assuming that the assumptions are correct and posting not one iota of supporting evidence.

In retrospect, you're probably right. Sorry about that. At least there's some news of hope on the horizon ^.^

I suggest rereading that immense topic and post totally a whopping 6 words. I don't see "Atrix" anywhere
He's simply sharing an article showing that AT&T is becoming more open, which may mean a future update for the Atrix, and, while a bit far fetched, potentially even hints at them allowing a bootloader unlock.

I was glad to see someone not let their anger at AT&T fly back at the OP so they update some of their older phones that are probably easier to do at this point. This is obviously a sign that they have realized they cant treat us like Apple does. If we really want open phones we can and will have them. So they are going to just give them too us open. It will probably cut down on warranty claims from stupid people doing shoddy jobs of rooting and flashing their phones. Im sure motorola wont leave us hanging theyve taken good care of me so far. so just be patient.

Why should I care if At&t enables side loading, we have a hack for it. Is At&t taking a page from Apple, "were adding something users already figured out how to do, we initiative!!"

I love hacking, Don't get me wrong, But I'm not going to risk being stuck on Froyo cause I deleted some important file, or have to panic about the sbf. official updates are official for a reason.
This thing cost me 250$... Not gonna risk it :S

Has anyone actually gotten the update via OTA on one of these devices?

I manually ran the OTA update for my wife's HTC Aria this morning. No joy. It just searched for what seemed like 10 minutes before I quit it.

Um, you can't get stuck on FroYo for rooting. If you deodex/install a P-ROM, you'll have to flash back to stock, however.
I haven't seen anyone get completely bricked by modding the Atrix. There's almost no risk if you understand what you're doing currently. It's not like the Captivate where you might get the black screen of death and have to make a jig.

Considering the extensive testing that AT&T requires before allowing firmware updates to be released, along with the fact that 4.1.83 was literally just released, its not surprising to see the Atrix not on the list.
I also agree with the bootloader thing, if AT&T was the reason it was locked, Motorola now has some incentive to unlock it. Not that they definitely would though, as other motorola devices on other carriers show.

UPDATE:
New article with word that the Atrix will be updated as well.

Evo 4g rooted before Incredible?

This is the word on the 4G forum here on XDA! Hope this soon leads to the incredible root but for now ill just be jealous.

Lol not like it would hurt, that **** already full of spam and beggers haha
it was somthing in the bootloader that found that the incredible does not have. But rest assured that its bieng worked on and im sure we will have root.
nah, it wasn't the bootloader
looks to me like he flashed a leaked image based on where he starts the video and seeing how he doesnt show us the bootloader or anything involving recovery/fastboot. My guess is that since this was an evo prerelease is that someone at htc with the shipping rom weasled a su apk in there while also having the test keys to sign. I never see anyone talking on irc and i assume we are months away from root.
edit: after looking on the website it seems as if they have done deeper work than i assumed. I believe there may be similarities in what they did and what we need. He mentions that he used his linux background and knowldge of hacking bootloaders. maybe something is in store for us unlucky incredible users
nope it has been stated that it will not work for us. And it looks like my bootloader theroy is wrong..... mmmmm i wonder what it could be.
are you judging by this little footnote? "At this time, we believe that this specific exploit cannot be applied to Incredible." - taken from grack.com . If they did anything to the bootloader i would assume an exploit can be derrived from this method. we dont need to use their entire method. From what i hear their bootloader is a higher version than ours which should make it more difficult to crack. If they ever release how they did it Im sure we can find some hope to help us.

Knowledge is power and not sure what was up your rear when posting but any bit of information on semi similar phones never hurt anyone. Seeing how this isn't a post about an accessory app theme maybe could go into general but this is more of developmental news then general.
Well, I at least feel better knowing others are going through the same "pain" I am faced with. I'll donate my time and resources (I still don't have the Incredible thx to it being sold out everywhere... maybe I will try the Best Buy closest to me... although they kind of stink, they don't even carry any Apple computers while most ever other BB does) to get this fix0rz for the peeple!

Nothing to do with test keys, no leaked images. There is no way to modify it to the incredible.
lol, I knew it was going to be rooted before, but I had some hopes it could have been used to help with the root for the Incredible. Oh well, such is life. I'm sure there are some Verizon Android developers that are still working on this....All the give me root and where's the root and other I want root spamming is not going to help with anything other than the continuous spamming of this section.
I really hate this waiting for the Unlockers/Root for any phone as it's nothing but spamming.
Just be patient and it will come. Then it's time for you to show your gratification to the developers for their hardwork that I'm sure most do in their spare time and not as their source of income...

G2 Rootkit

I saw a story on BoingBoing indicating that the G2 has a rootkit installed on it.
boingboing.net/2010/10/05/t-mobile-sneaks-root.html
I am wondering if anyone can confirm this? I haven't received my phone yet, but that would suck.
yeah, any changes you make are reversed upon reboot
It is a very loose use of the term "rootkit", but from the owner's perspective, it is technically correct.
So is that it. Game over?

I'm hoping there is no real merit to this and that the XDA community finds a workaround. I have faith in the devs here. The first one to get a working, solid root will definitely get a donation from me, lol.
My question is.. if the phone always resets the firmware.. what happens when T-Mobile pushes out the next OTA?
They obviously have a work around that needs to be exploited.

I think in cases like these, their hands are probably tied. It's hard to say who to put the blame on. The carrier could've requested the block or they would've rejected HTC. Either way, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The end user pays a monthly bill and has purchased the phone. Why are they now disallowed to alter their investment? I don't see how the carrier or HTC loses. Preventing us from tinkering will just make us grow to hate the carrier, the phone manufacturer or both.
Where are we supposed to go when Android gets completely locked down? That doesn't sound like open source to me and open source is what drove me to Android in the first place.
I'm sure the big difference with the OTA is the fact that it's:
1) a newer version
2) signed
Failing to meet these requirements probably prevents writing to the "permanent" memory.
Well this is quite irritating. Has this sort of thing been implemented on other devices? And if so, has XDA been able to root it?
I guess what im trying to ask is, if this is true, does that mean the G2 can not be rooted? Need to know because im purchasing one soon and if its impossible to root and get roms on, It would be a deal breaker for me.
Well, it can't really be impossible, but if it requires hardware mods or for the signature to be cracked...it may never happen.
Honestly, I'm happy enough with the phone that I wouldn't be upset it if it was never rooted, but of course I'd prefer that it was. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that one of the expert rooters can get the job done.

Anything that can be engineered, can ultimately be reverse engineered. I'm sure once devs like Cyanogen and others get a G2 in hand, they'll have some sort of solution or at least a better explanation than what this website gives. One can only hope. If it turns out to be hardware-driven, that scares me a bit.
Wow, what a boneheaded move by Tmo considering that so many people considered the G2 to be the successor to the N1 as a dev phone.

That shouldn't matter then.. remember the CLIQ and DROID were rooted by adding SU to a signed OTA w/o changing the signature bits in the compressed OTA.
iT cant be impossible cause then we would never be able to get updates so like everyone is saying im sure some Pro Moders / Hackers will find a way. Will it be as simple as other roots? Prly not but im sure at some point we will have it. I to am happy with the phone as is and rly the only thing that we are lacking (correct me if im wrong) is the built in teathering and becoming a WiFi hotspot. I can live without those things but some people might need them. At any rate my fingers are crossed =)

He wasn't referring to an actual "dev" G2 phone...he meant the G2 was perceived as the next big "open" phone for devs to have just how the N1 was widely accepted/perceived as a phone for devs (being able to root, load custom ROMS, etc. freely) (ie. moto's execs telling disgruntled X owners that if they wish to have custom roms and such they should buy a google n1).

The problem with this position is if you have a need that T-Mobile refuses to meet, then you cannot override them.
But as others have pointed out, it can be reversed engineered. Physical access to the hardware essentially makes it vunderable to whatever security counter-measures you wish to invest in.

Verizon released Froyo for the Fascinate yesterday, but they just won't give it to you. Why? We're not sure. Maybe you didn't pay your bill on time, or maybe they're prejudiced against people with {insert your hair color here} hair. They can be pretty capricious that way.

Samsung charges providers with the update, verizon does not want to pay for it since its open source. More info: EB13 to EC05

While searching through some sprint forums, I came across the admin stating this about those who have EB13:
The official Sprint OTA update is for devices on EB13 and will update your device to EC05. You should receive it by midnight CST.
I know people might think this is crap, but the one thing the admin gave away is the TIME ZONE. Now we know the time zone to base it on to see if it will come true.
Just a thought to get people a little more hopeful.

I mean, my statement is just a theory, of course, based on a Sprint Admin (the one who actually posted the info all about the new update on the Sprint forums), so I'm taking his word for it.
Also, it being CST makes sense since the Sprint Headquarters is in the Midwest. (I think)
That being said, I think that confirms that the update is being run by Sprint, not the Google servers, like some had suggested.
Yep makes alot of sense and explains the texts everyones been getting.
Thanks for posting bro.

No problem. Since I live in the Midwest, it's easier to keep track of the time
For those who don't live in the Midwest, it is currently 9:00.
Only 3 more hours until we all get EC05, or Sprint had lied
Edit: Holy crap, I think I might be getting it right now O_O
It's checking for the software update, and it's taking way longer than usual. I know it's checking correctly because whenever you check for any update, the little "3G" icon in the notification bar disappears. I'll let it keep loading for a while. *FINGERS CROSSED*

Alright, well:
1. You have to click "Update Firmware" and then the System Updates section will show it downloading.
2. It IS available; people on DI18 already have it. Sprint claims EB13 will get it too. Maybe not today, but one can only hope right?
Look, the best way to look at a situation like this is to be optimistic, and that is what I am attempting to do. Sure I might be wrong or get my hopes up, but sometimes the feeling of having the optimism is enough.
So please, don't just make statements like that. I know you weren't intending to bash me or anything, but having that negativity does not help.

Agreed. I just checked three forums posted by Sprint admins that confirmed ALL SOFTWARE VERSIONS WILL BE UPGRADED TO EC05 BY END OF TODAY.
Now I agree with you that we may not get it TODAY, but we will get it EVENTUALLY. And @dbpaddler, I would but I have a Mac, and do not feel like wiping my data. Also, I do not want to do the Root method because if I root my phone I want to put ext4/cwm3 on it, not cwm2.5. (I realize I can update, but not worth the hassle in my opinion)
This was just posted today:

You people act like this would be the first time sprint said something that didn't come true. Hell, the Epic was coming with FROYO since November. It's only 4 months later, and they still aren't shipping froyo on the phones, and it came out in what, last may?
Facts? Yes, how about the FACT that it WAS stated that 18 and 13 were BOTH getting 05, then it changed it changed to 18 getting it, and 13 by 1am est, NOW it's changed to 3 previous getting the update? However, the FACT still stands, only 18 is getting 05. Everything I've posted is FACT, the only one inferred was that it's not coming tonight.

Agreed. I don't want this to be a back-and-forth argument.
However, if you can cite a source proving your statements, I would accept them and be on my way.
Edit: @NoSoMo, look, I understand why you're feeling like that. However, it is Samsung who is developing the software, not Sprint. Samsung develops, Sprint delivers. Besides, people already have EC05, which means Sprint ISN'T LYING.

You state that it is not available (assumed currently), which is a fact as of this minute. You then make a very bold FACTUAL claim that it will not be available this week. I am asking you to site the source of this FACT. There are people that read this forum for FACTUAL information, and when you make a statement like that, it is going to freak people out, POSSIBLY FOR NO REASON.
If you would have said "and I bet it won't be available at all this week", or "watch it not be available at all this week", that is an opinion, and that is cool. You made a FACTUAL statement off of what DOCUMENTED FACT???
In the end you could very well be right, but not because of fact, but because you took a chance and got lucky, I am just asking you to take a little responsibility in what you post on forums, especially about such a hot topic.

You bring out a good point Milkman, although a little too argumental (I'm trying to keep some tranquility here )
@NoSoMo, he's right. You are basing everything on opinion and past events that make you believe Sprint will not deliver their promise. An inference is fine, but please reword it so you don't say "facts".
Guys, look. I didn't want all of this to turn into an argument. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Please, I do not want a flame war. Can we all agree to drop this?
I just got tired of waiting so I went to Androidcentral and and used their rom and flashed from EB13 to EC05. It worked great and I didn't lose any data. http://forum.androidcentral.com/epi...ooted-cwm-v2-5-1-0-rfs-odexed.html#post761525

I'd do that if I could, but I have a mac and no availability to a PC as of now. Also, I would prefer to root my phone to ext4/cwm3 (I realize you can just update over it, but eh, I'm more comfortable with my own preferences)

4.5.91 Upgrade - Is there a "no flash back" warning?

Since I am on KP's 4.5.91 I have not flashed the released OTA.
I see many people already bricking after installing the upgrade, then trying to flash back.
Do you get a warning either before downloading the OTA, or before installing the OTA that you cannot flash to a previous version afterwards?
If not, it's possible you could return your phone, blaming AT&T/Moto for not warning you about backwards flashing.
If there was a warning, sorry, but you will probably be SOL, and it's your own fault for trying to downgrade after installing the OTA.
A bricked device will display 0x1000 on the screen when trying to boot up.
If you see this, go here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160408
Of course not, why would Motorola put in a warning like that. Motorola never excepts you to flash back to an older firmware.

CaelanT,
I updated to gingerbread on rooted atrix 4.1.83. I did not notice any warning as you are hoping. Though the phone's root privilege is no more, Motorola has enabled the sideloading and I am happy with that.

Are you serious?
Why would AT&T or Motorola be to blame for you bricking your device?
There doesn't need to be a "no flash back" warning... If you're 'flashing back' you are most likely using software you're not technically supposed to have to flash firmware you're not technically supposed to have.
It's really tiring reading these forums where people blame everyone but themselves for their bricked device. (Even after the "THIS WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE" warnings..)
Technically, people shouldn't be able to flash back... we're not supposed to have RSD software or SBFs to flash in the first place.

Because technically, if they do not warn you that you can ruin your device by flashing to an earlier version, you have a case to sue them if you so choose to go that route. It's their failure to secure the software, updates, and upgrades they have which allows people to flash something you say they should not have, but is freely available to download through software update. Please do not spout what you hear from other people and think this makes you knowledgeable in any way. There are many legal implications with Moto and AT&T not disclosing what their updates/upgrades will or will not do, especially when they say "you will have unlock ability", then switch that at release with no warning, or for any number of reasons.
I can see you have a large contribution to this community by the grand sum of 5 posts which you have.
Now, I am trying to help some of the people out here who were obviously stupid enough to blindly flash an update released to them without first consulting XDA, because of course when you buy the Atrix it tells you to consult XDA on any matters relating to the Atrix!
Go back to ebay where you belong chuck!
BTW..........yes, I am very serious!
So the boot loader on the OTA is still Locked?!!!
yeah you could try that argument. they could give you the run around that you flashed using stuff not from their site or from their customer service portal and there could be some line in the warranty that would cover their ass from that stuff. but hey, worth a shot.
I updated to ota 4.5.9.1 during the soak and there was a big warning on the website, but nothing that I remember seeing when I downloaded and installed the software. They know the risk obviously. Surprised they wouldn't cover their behind during the install.

As many people have said.. Motorola does not give you any offical path to unlock your bootloader and flash a previous version. People like XDA do.
I have no problem with putting a custom Rom on my phone. I've hacked every device since my first Windows CE pda. The problem I have is with people like you that want to Sue Motorola because they... What? Told you to unlock your bootloader and try to flash unsupported software? No, they didn't.
Oh, and by the way please show me where you got the Official Motorola Atrix Unlock from.

The unlocked Bootloader is one thing, the fact that some users are bricking their phones after using OTA's is another.
Granted the 0X1000 is coming more from XDA users who have flashed, but Motorola needs to embrace the Android community better.
I'm not a fanboy of any company by any means, currently I own both a SGS and an Atrix.
^ With that said, Motorola needs to be a little more like Samsung.
* Paying attention to forums like XDA would be a start. Giving phones for free to developers would be another. (Samsung had no problem doing this).
*Getting rid of the bootloader FOREVER would also be in their best interest.
* Finally not forcing MotoBlur accounts down people's throats would be a friendlier approach as well.
Android consumers have helped Motorola get back in the game.
It's time for Motorola to repay the favor and start treating Android like "Android", and not like an iPhone...

Yeah, it would be nice if they'd support their more advanced users like Samsung and HTC have been doing. It seems like they are about to make some kind of change with Motoblur so maybe they'll ease up on the requirement to use it.

I've seen the Motoblur "improvements", but you still need an account, which is BS. Plus its a waste of time to freeze things in TiBU.
Between the last OTA that bricked many phones and the current Motoblur BS, I hope we can get Vanilla Gingerbread on this device more than ever. This will definitely be my last Motoblur phone I ever purchase.
Don't get me wrong I like Motorola a lot, but I also like to have a drama free phone...
I have a question for everyone that upgraded to GB.
After reading about the bugs in GB (like the "battery jumping issue" for instance) -
If you "could" go back to Froyo's latest build, would you do it or are you happier with the current GB?...
Nah.

Even with the few problems i'm enjoying having GB.. I guess I just like something new to look at.
I only miss a few things.
- The Happenings page that used to be attached to contacts. It was nice to be able to see the last post a friend made when calling them.
- Access control in Wireless Tether. (I can't remember if it worked on the Atrix or just my previous phone)
- Working Wired Tether..
- Setting review time on the camera.

"Hi Motorola, I'm using non-public tools that have been leaked, and non-public SBF files that have been gotten in an unofficial capacity to downgrade my phone after the latest update. I'm not breaking my warranty, am I?"
