Did you rename your backup? If so, chances are that you either used spaces or odd characters and the caused the failure.

[Q] please help, trying to fix x

ok, so it all started when i tried to update gala x. the update seemed to go ok, but then i kept getting stuck on the m screen. i was able to boot into koush's recovery (not sure how i did it), and i tried to do a restore. however the restore i did was from an incredible, and now it seems i can't get back into koush's recovery (i can get in normal recovery). i may just be doing it wrong though. and if i try to apply update.zip from normal recovery i get failed to verify whole-file signature, signature verification failed.
any help is greatly appreciated

[Q] Rom Manager/ Bootstrap help?

So I accidently flashed CW Recovery before I used bootstrap and now I can't boot into CW Recovery or create a backup. Any ideas?
Ive searched all over the place, Ive found some threads that describe what each do, but I guess Im just trying to understand the whole picture. I have the Bootstrap program on my phone, I also have Rom Manager (Im rooted and have SuperUser also.)
I guess where Im confused at is what to do with each of them.
On other phones Ive just went through Rom Manager, Flashed CW Recovery, created a backup then I was up and running.
Do I need to do this before running bootstrap, do I run bootstrap first?
Sorry for the rookie question, I guess this boot strap thing has me confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated
You have to use the bootstrap to get into clockwork recovery, run the first option in bootstrap, it should say "success" then use rom manager or the reboot recovery option. You need to do the bootstrap option every time you want to go to custom recovery.

So is it bad I flashed the CW recovery before using bootstrap? If so how the heck do I fix it, lol
I flashed CW recovery before I hit bootstrap. Shows I have the current Recovery Image
If I hit "reboot into recovery" through Rom manager it doesnt do anything. If I hit "bootstrap recovery" through droid x bootstrapper it says success, but when i hit reboot recovery it doesnt do anything either...
power+home button on power up just brings me to stock recovery screen..
im lost
Try running the first option in bootstrapper again, same with reflashing clockwork... rom manager can boot to recovery.

Would it have anything to do with me having the official 2.3.15 update already on my phone? Its rooted of course but even when I click S.U it opens up but its just a blank black screen and says S.U permissions at the top

something is wrong with your root. try to re-root your phone the first time you run bootstrapper and rom manager you need to give them permission and it looks like you haven't yet so they can't work right. redo your root and it should solve your issues. also i find i need to bootstrap recovery before each time i try to use rom manager. kinda a pain i use recovery from bootstrap more often as its the same thing.
So even though Im rooted with the stock 2.2 I need to re-root it? Like just download a one-click-root and do it all over?
Should I factory reset before I do this?
The thing is I got the phone from a friend and it already had S.U on it, I just dont know what program he used to root it and what not...neither does he.

Installing roms

I have rom manager installed and am trying to install a rom from sdcard I keep gettin error message after it boots into recovery mode can someone tell me what I am doing wrong

Try giving us a little more details on what the error message says. Otherwise it's hard to determine what exactly you're doing wrong.
We can start with the basics, do you have ClockWorkMod installed?
Yes clockworkmod is installed, the error message e: file signature failed
E:failed to verify
Installation aborted

Try installing the ROM without using ROM Manager. Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery, then manually choose the zip and flash.
This usually means that clockwork is not installed correctly and that you are not flashing the rom from within clockwork.

I installed it from rom manager and it said it installed right, hold down vol down power and camera to get into recovery mode correct? Then how do I manually choose the zip file?

I rooted my epic w one click and I did a factory restore did that take out my root privs ?

It definitely sounds as though you haven't properly installed ClockWork -- IT appears you are booting in to the stock recovery, which will not allow you to flash a rom.
Assuming your phone is rooted, you will want to goto this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782300
and download this method of installing clockwork. Follow the directions on the post, and you shouldn't have an issue getting clockwork to run.
I'm just curious....did you rename or move this from inside the phone? I know I moved a couple roms using astro and then tried and no go.....maybe it was just me tho...

Not to be a jerk but you're more likely to get an answer from the General board.
Sorry for being a noob. Thanks for the advice. Like I said I'm new at this

Did you install CWM correctly (by using Odin and flashing the .tar file)?
If so, you can boot into CWM by using ROM Manager and pick "Reboot into Recovery"..
Then when in CWM, select Flash .zip from SD card..
Ya. I posted it in general and figured out that was the problem... Got it all fixed up and running super well. Thanks guys

just boot your ROM , plug your phone to the computer , make sure you have USB debugging ON
using ADB or Android Commander , push new recovery into </system/bootmenu>
you can get it from your custom rom ZIP <cm7 , cm9 , cm10 , nvm>
