ICS is expected to hit devices officially sometime in Q4 2011. However, today we found something that made our jaws drop.
I don’t know how stable this is, or if was even supposed to be out. The fact remains that I found this.
I stumbled upon an Ice Cream Sandwich leak on the popular Samsung Galaxy S.
So, without further ado, feast your eyes:
Taken from my post here: http://zomgitscj.com/2011/05/12/ice-cream-sandwich-leaks-on-galaxy-s/
Did I take your breath away for that one second where you hoped it was true?
Saw this coming from a mile away. Been punked before with this one!
Did make me chuckle though
Looks more practical than the Honeycomb leaks a while back.
I'm lovin' it. chuckles all the way
Tricky will have it in the beta kitchen this weekend.
hahahahaha
Seems to be quite stable but I have some concerns in the long run.
But what about battery consumption? It will get messy if the battery overheats.
@snapper.fishes Yes temperature management won't be too easy. But then again, its a very early beta
Sick joke...
Was too obvious but still made me laugh.
dont you have anything to do?
seriously....

The ice cream sandwich isn't 'leaking' in your photo. Next time wait for the ice cream to melt a bit and run over the screen... then it'll be an ice cream sandwich leak. Poor execution.

We don't even have froyo never mind gingerbread. Honeycomb is next and that's 3.0 and they haven't even started working on that and your worried about ice cream being 2.4. Ice cream would be 3.x since google goes in alphabetical order

Fair enuff but gingerbread was just finished. I'm sure there taking a short break and then working on honeycomb. I wouldn't expect 2.4 our ice cream in the summer if this rumor is true

Honeycomb is all but done my friend. It's been seen running on tablets already and rumor has it we may even see a Honeycomb tablet next month.
Here's Google's leaked demo of Honeycomb. I'm pretty sure that's not all CG'ed.
EDIT- I can't help but notice that FroYo was released last Summer, Gingerbread released during the holidays, Honeycomb will be showing up in late winter / early spring, and Ice Cream again in the summer. Interesting!

My guess is that they renamed gingerbread to "ice cream" for the phones instead of calling it gingerbread also

I didn't realize honeycomb was done already. From what I see is honeycomb will be tablet only. My question is if the tablets get 3.0 and smart phones get 2.3 what's going to happen after 2.9?
I never realized there update schedual to you pointed it out.
Sent From Da Hood.
The OS version dubbed honeycomb may be tablet only, nothing about that means that phones won't see past 3.0
Unified versions. Phone OS and tablet OS will eventually merge into a single OS.

Yeah, all signs point to Honeycomb being tablet-only. It looks like they will go to 2.4 for Ice Cream and at some point they will merge the two as muyoso mentioned.
I'll bet Google put a different team on Honeycomb then they did on Gingerbread; I'm sure they collaborated but since Honeycomb is going to split off as the Tablet branch of the Android tree, they've probably got a separate team working on all the Tablet features like sorting out app / resolution conflicts and tablet UI enhancements. Anyhow this would explain the relatively short time between launches.
From my understanding Google wants the Chrome OS on tablet and netbook. I think honeycomb is something to hold tablet people over til Chrome is ready. And Android has already jumped a lot of numbers they can easily jump 3.x and go to 4 for phones.

Chrome OS is going to get dropped or at very least put on the shelf for a while. Android is too popular for Google to abandon it at this point. Its on everything. Also, at this point chrome os is no where near ready to publicly launch for consumers. Consumers would hate the OS for the most part. It offers zero advantages over android. Also, it looks like Honeycomb is running some modified version of chrome, so I am sure chrome OS apps will work on honeycomb. Maybe it wont be natively, but if there is a reason to do it, XDA will provide.

This is my first Motorola phone and I actually hopped to ATT for the Atrix and so far, I really dont have anything bad to say.
Now that my intro is done... anyone have any insight when MOTO/ATT will push Gingerbread to the Atrix?
I'm hoping summer... what does everyone else think?
edit: when I poll for winter, its winter at the end of this year, not right now....
So far we're speculating for fall...
Hopefully with the attention that MOTO has with the Atrix and the Xoom, maybe they'll hire some extra engineers to push something by summer...
look at Milestone, they still on 2.1.
so I guess we won't get 2.3 until 2012
I really hope they upgrade directly to Ice Cream in winter, skipping Gingerbread. Ah well, hope springs eternal, as they say...
Crap in one hand and wait on gingerbread in the other, see which one gets full first.
It is bs the phone should not have been released without gingerbread.
They are already developing ginger bread. Look in dev forum. Someone had a dev dump if ginger bread at some point
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
gingerbread is pointless.
ice cream is what we need. I rather have them skip gingerbread and work straight onto ice cream.

Actually Motorola are known to update their flagship phones. The milestone never for updated because it was not one. The Droid x was released with 2.1, updates to 2.2 and will be getting 2.3 soon.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Since the Atrix is a flagship dual-core, I think we'lll see it sooner rather than later. Especially since we have a Gingerbread dump in the dev forum already... that's some nice signs for a spring/summer update.
Its really interesting seeing the wide range of dates when people think we'll get it.
I would really like to see the update soon, but it doesn't look likely. It is more likely I will end up with the Galaxy S2 / iphone 5 or some new HTC phone before we see an update.

Mehhh, we got a mostly working CM7 build now anyway.
I'm pretty sure that they're referring to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS as they are calling it). It sounds like what our Devs are doing to port over CM7 on the Froyo kernel.
And I read that the phone will be supported for 18 months from release date which will be extremely nice.
For them to be able to do this, I think it'll require what our Devs are doing...

For the moment I am very content with my phone, I think as long as manufacturers keep the phones fully up to date users have really nothing to whine about.
So after 18 months your phone is released, they wont care anymore?
Might just be interpreting it incorrectly...
After 18 months you can get a new phone, so no they won't care.
I doubt this is for older phones. Seems to be just a future plan.

That is a trademarked brand name so I think Jelly Donut is closer than Jelly Bean. Or maybe Jelly Roll.
I think they're going to do Jelly Bean, but I could see Jelly Roll also.

noun

2.
British. a serving of fresh fruit after the main course of a meal.
I admit that a desert full of jellybeans got to be really funny just thinking about it. Glad to see that someone else knows the difference.
Jelly Bean seems to be the most likely option. Jelly donut won't happen, because they've already used donut. Jelly roll might happen, but I bet they'd rather have the new statue be a pile of Android shaped jelly beans than another log to go next to the eclair

So, you piqued my interest, and I went and started searching for ICS features and stuff. Anyway, what are the main differences we'll be seeing on our transformers? It sounds like this update is more important for phones because a lot of features sound Honeycomb-esque (except for the swipe on the multi-task roulette to kill apps, that sounds awesome).

There are so many changes this update is from the ground up in comparison to honeycomb
Think of honeycomb as the brainstorm and testing ideas and ice cream sandwich as the finished product
Framework changes UI changes memory management changes face detection improved multi tasking etc etc theres to much to list but its huge!!!!
What dog testing means is that google employees are now using a OTA of ice cream sandwich a mock up public release so to speak they say its a alpha but really its a late beta if they are sticking to there schedule plus why would they OTA a very ruff build no point so it has to be late stages or theres no point testing it on a specific device right?
Id say if they are doing this its a sign of fine tunning and getting out real world issues and bugs
Have i read but im hopefull for late december

Android is still a baby in OS terms, Windows is an Old boy now but Windows 7 was the first decent OS since .... maybe 2000 or XP if you like that kind of thing
Computers are only just becoming powerful and affordable if you look at even 5 years ago

While I have no argument with Matias' comments, I do think that Android is, by now, a mature product compared to where it was with the 1.x or even 2.x versions.
