Hi All,
Running CM7.0.3.1 with Savaged-Zen 2.1.0 BFS kernel. Also using v1 of viperboy's undervolting at -100. There was a time I had stellar battery life (back on an early CM7 nightly and a way earlier version of SZ kernel), but for the life of me I cannot get back to that point. I've been checking spare parts and it is showing k9 and palmary weather with some partial wakelock but it doesn't look too severe from what I can tell, or maybe I'm reading it wrong.
Anyway, here's a view of my battery history. Does all that awake time seem odd? I'm kind of at a loss here for what is going on and how to fix it.
Thanks!

this question should be address in the cyanogen sub-forum. there are literally people there with the same setup as you that can better help you.
I wasn't aware there was a sub-forum dedicated to CM ?
There is a CyanogenMod forum thread in the development forum and one for the nightlys in the general forum.

Right, I just didn't know that there was an actual subforum. I did know there were threads.
Thanks!!
That doesn't look like a wake lock to me. Your history shows your phone being asleep most of the time. I would guess that that is an app or apps that are using too much data or cpu time. Use spare parts to check app usage, partial wake lock, ect. Make sure you don't have facebook, twitter, ect set to update every 5 mins.

What criteria have to be met for the phone to actually sleep? Does it sleep immediately when the screen is off? The only apps that auto update are palmary weather (2 hours) and k9 email which gets imap push.
The way I understand it, an app can request a wake lock which prevents the phone from sleeping. This can be normal for certain functions, however sometimes the app won't release the wake lock and that's when the battery drains constantly even with the screen off. Spare parts will tell you everything you need to know to find the battery drain.

Thank you, that is very helpful. Here's where I am now:
On battery 2h16m and I'm at 91%.
On spare parts under partial wake usage:
Android System - 38m23s
k-9 mail - 10m1s
Those are the two highest. The other entries are negligible.
CPU Usage:
k-9 - user time - 24s
Everything else is way under 24s
So you think K-9 is a big contender here? How about whatever android system has going on?
How much of that 2 hours have you had the screen on and doing stuff? Android system has been on for almost half of the time since you unplugged. That sounds high. I would do a full wipe and reflash the ROM or try a CFS build of savagezen. A reboot usually stops the battery drain if you catch it.

Hardly any. Been just letting it sit with the screen off, letting it discharge.
Thank you again for your help!
Yeah you've a problem with android service. I would first try another kernel maybe CFS this time. If that doesn't help I would completely wipe everything and flash again. If you use titanium to restore your apps, only restore the purchased apps, not the system apps and data.

Woke up today with about the same rate of battery drain. This time, it didn't look like an android system problem at all, so know knows?! So frustrating.
I still may do a complete wipe though.
You're not alone..My battery sucks and I even bought 2 new batterys and its all the same..I just carry an extra around with me..I got tired of monitoring everything.

Hi all,
The battery life of my 4month old SGS is becoming shorter every week! I can 'almost' last a work day (8 hours) with a fully charged battery and minimal use.
I had this problem also on the stock firmware, Darky's rom 8.x was a slight improvement (much faster tho!), Light-ning rom and Darky's rom 9.x.
Everyday I charge my battery untill it is full, when my alarm goes off it's already at 98% (it's still hooked up). When I'm in the train to school, my battery already dropped around 86% (being idle). I check some mobile websites, my e-mail and read some twitter messages.
Because I know services as Twitter (I'm using Tweetdeck) uses alot of resources and battery, so when I'm done looking I always shut down those programs. And I often do an 'end all' task in the 'System' app which I purchased from the market lately to monitor my battery.
During the day the only thing I do is check my mail and some websites, but not for long, mostly it would be around 5minutes or so. So WiFi is turned OFF, GPS is turned OFF, and only GMail synchronizes with default settings. So what's the deal? Is my battery slowly dieing because of oldness, or is there another problem?
Thanks in advance for helping me! You're doing a great job!
Sincerely yours,
S1GNZ
after flashing your custom roms of choice... did you ever do a battery calibration?
like let your phone drain till it dies on its own... turn it on againa nd let it die again to completely drain it to the point where u cant even turn it on.
Then plug your phone in to charge and let it charge to 100%. Keeping the phone plugged in turn on your phone into recovery. Then clear battery status.
Then reboot your phone into normal mode and let it continue charging till it says 100%. WHen you unplug your phone it SHOULD say 100% still.
This normally fix the problem but if you notice that your phone is dying quickly still then PM me.
One small advice, try logging out google talk,of-course if you are not on it much,it will give you at least 2-3 hrs more.
Also, there is already a thread active on this forum 'dont kill your phone
,give it a life' give that a read.
Mainly this battery drains are there because of apps doing sync. or polling.identify them and adjust settings.

I've been browsing these forums lately, and I've also come across a thread which advice is just the opposite and that you should NOT do this, any advice if that's true? And is it also true that deleting the batterystats helps?

Am I auto-logged in on Google talk? If so, how do I log myself out :$? So Google sync might drain it? (Mail, Agenda, Contacts?)
Thanks for the quick replies! I really appreciate it!

I am not 100% sure if you auto logged or not.I believe not but if not so , then open app, press menu/setting button on phone, select logout.also if you not intending to use data network, press power key till you see a menu turn off, data network, turn it on when you need it.These small things saves some power.
If you dont want to mess around with this little twiks then 'juice plotter' is the app for you.it will manage lots of things and defi. saves battery.
BTW based on your usage desc., I think I use it in similar way ...almost and yet phone makes ~2 days.

You of course wouldn't be doing this alot nor should you NEED to do this often. It's only something you do when you're experiencing what you currently are.
Personally I have no idea why anyone say u "Should NOT" do this.. it's not like you're altering anything hardware wise. It's mainly software and power usage aspects.
Like I said to each their own. Some people say custom roms are a "No-No" cuz it messes with the phone in more bads than good and some says stock roms are for noobs. You dont HAVE to try what I said, it's merely a suggestion of fix or methods that seems to solve the problems others have encountered.
Clearing the battery status pretty much resets it's counter to 100% and from there it will "calculate" the life of the battery from full to empty. It's a calibration thing.
Now on regards to usage, keep your data plan off and auto-sync off when you're not using it. Leave your wifi off and gps off as well.. pretty much keep anything you dont need off until you need it. Some samsung apps does a background run thing where it'll auto turn on and auto run in the background which drains ur battery quite badly. If you don't use goggle talk or samsung chat apps, there are many ways to remove them completely so it won't mess with your battery life
Simple you installed a rom with multiple posts on battery drain problem .
A rom that also tells you about battery drain problems /fix on its front page .

Don't be offended by what I said! . I only wanted to make sure I'm doing the right thing, I appreciate your criticism though. I did what you said and fully drained my battery yesterday, kept it charging overnight, cleared the batterystats through recovery mode and at the moment it's charging till 100%. I will see if it helps!
And according to my usage, I have Wifi and GPS turned of as default. And because I reinstalled a new ROM inclusive data wipe I don't have much chat apps installed, maybe there are some default apps that don't show up in the 'System panel' app though?

Care to explain a bit further?
FYI, I installed these ROMS:
past: Stock firmware 2.2.1
past: Darky's ROM v8.0 Gingerbread edition
past: Light-ning ROM 2.2 (if I'm correct, it's probably the latest)
current: Darky's ROM v9.2 Extreme edition (9.2 should've fixed the battery drain, am I right?)
Can't thank you enough for the replies!
Sincerely yours,

im having similar problems too. calibrating doesnt really make a difference.
i installed an app called task identifier which is brilliant it tell me whats happening when the phone is asleep. the only trouble is i dont understand what these processes are so i cant disable them.... is there any sort of app out there that completely logs / signs you out of every app ??
i have 108 apps (not including system apps) and its hard trying to eliminate the battery drainers
Care to explain a bit further?
As it says post lots of with battery problems big big percentage running Darky rom .
current: Darky's ROM v9.2 Extreme edition (9.2 should've fixed the battery drain, am I right?) You would have to ask on dARKY Post .
Look at Battery drain thread LAST POST OR SO MAY BE OF INTEREST .
I am of the opinion that if a rom breaks something then installing more roms will often not fix the problem . I prefer a blank completely wiped phone in such cases with no trace of any rom left on it .
jje
@azzledazzle 108 apps? really ????
I don't have that much on my PC!
I think we should start narrowing down which apps drain most juice. I've been using Advanced Task Killer just to narrow down a couple.
example:
Sound Hound - starts on its own
Facebook had an issue with notifications push, when disabled, it still sent notifications to my phone. But I think they fixed it in the latest version.
We could start adding versions to know which app is a 'juice drainer'
Could people who have managed more than 10 hours or 15 hours on their galaxy s3 post screen shots of their battery stats and include information of what special settings they used, what kernels and Rom they used and what battery you used and what they used their phones for like apps and games so people like me who only manage to get 6 hours out of their s3's can hopefully get more out of their phones.
(You don't have to say exactly what games or apps just that you used some)
Think it would be very helpful

Defiantly get more than that between recharges.
Stock deodexed Wannam ROM, with the below configuration basically.
I removed most Samsung stuff,
no S-voice (Google Now is enough), Kies (including kiesexe), tracking services, remote controls etc.
Look for the list of unneeded services found here somewhere and freeze what you don't use.
Your going to have to do that with most ROM's, even light editions don't remove everything.
Other tips, freeze Facebook when not used or use 'Fast for Facebook' instead.Too many others tips to mention they can all be found here but.
I leave Wi-Fi, GPS and Google services on here. Plus pesky Facebook (for the calendar sync). But am happy with battery so far...
Battery is now 68%, Screen time 56%
7.45hrs on battery.. No calls, just Tune in radio, YouTube, XDA, Firefox etc over WiFi. GPS turns on hourly for weather, along with syncing for 4 email accounts, Facebook, Twitter and G+.
Facebook, Twitter are system syncs NOT application syncs. I use Android Pro Widgets to display what the system syncs and only open those two apps when needed..
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLJ4 - Siyah kernel 1.7b1 - JKay framework -

Thanks, I've tried only one Rom which was omega but that really didn't help my battery and tried the phenomenal extreme and shiyah kernels (found the explanation of dual booting a bit confusing)
Don't like the whole thing about wiping my memory for Rom installation as I've done a nandroid backup which backs up the state so if I install a Rom have to add everything back (not tried titanium backup yet though, might be the answer)
I don't have a facebook app as usually use chrome to visit it and don't really use s voice and haven't really used Google now as my battery seems to just drain by pressing buttons and if I play a game for even a short time my battery seems to drain 20%
Don't have GPS or syncs or any location settings on as thought that would drain battery and tried battery saving apps but they never gave my battery a better life.
I'll try removing some bloatware though as that might help a lot

I practically always have Wi-Fi on, and I'm constantly checking facebook, emails, the odd web page, other social apps etc.

I am on stock and use green power premium. I get 1d16h with 100min call time, listening to FM radio tuner, occasional flip board and Gmail. I do not use Facebook but have outlook configured. I am sure I will get more battery life as I had rebooted my device and un/installed a few apps while trying out and spent a lot of time trying to setup Tasker which I will not be doing on a regular day.

Two good apps that could help to reduce battery usage are Tasker and Juice Defender. They can schedule turn on time for wifi/data for syncing, rather than having them on when phone is idle

I've got juice defender but yet to master it as it seems to be doing all sorts.
I put it on aggressive and it changes settings for WiFi itself and other things that I don't want it to do and now it's put itself back to balanced and it really hasn't done anything for my battery other than annoying me and playing games.
Think I'll uninstall it cause it ain't really helping me

I just read that after installing a new Rom or buying new battery the best thing to do is re callibrate your battery from 100 to 0% maybe for this after factory resetting phone not sure about installing Roms though but I rememner after installing a rom the battery seemed worse.
I also remember having better battery the first having my phone after callibrating it so trying that might be a good option.
Anyway that's my input.

You can wipe it from recovery (Delete battery stats option), you can install an app to that for you or you can delete the batterystats.bin file located in /data/system/ folder. You need root for all three methods and it is recommended to do it on a fully charged battery.
Calibrating battery means that you delete the batterystats.bin log file so you get fresh stats in the battery log in setting (im not sure if the option in recovery does anything more) so if you are not experiencing weird battery behavior (like phone shutting down at 30% or not fully charging) than this might hele other than that I don't think there is any benefit. But it is up to you if you want to try and see for yourself.

Also by letting your battery die from 100%, only have to do this first time though as you can then just charge your battery when you want an extra boost before you're going out.
I've found that after installing a new Rom or factory reset and just charging my phone from half way or at 30% my battery drains quickly from 100%

I did read somewhere it maybe has to do with roaming or WiFi.
Not sure what phone you have or what Rom or mod you're using as you have 4.1.2 jellybean which I'm guessing has only been released to nexus.
Sorry can't be more help other than check your applications and see what processes are running and what is keeping your phone awake.
It can even be a widget or launcher, maybe someone else can be more helpful.

could you just let me know if this looks normal, and if not, any suggestions?
Its the Android OS battery consumption that i don't like.
BBS doesn't show anything out of the ordinary. I have searched and read alot of tips and tricks, but nothing has helped so far.
Im on Slimbean 2.9.

That will tell us a bit more.
Hey,
I'm running stock nexus 4. I have been having terrible 8 hour battery life with "Android OS" taking up all the battery in battery status. BetterBatteryStats tells me that "sns_perioidic_wakelock" and "sns_async_ev_wakelock" is using up most of the battery. See attached. Any idea what apps are causing this?

I'm pretty sure I've seen those wakelocks when making a lot of phone calls. Seems likely related to cell radio use some how, but that's just a guess.

Actually the crazy thing is that i have airplane mode with wifi on most of the day cause I have really bad service. And I only have 100 minutes of talk, so I never talk on the phone.

Just checked mine and those wakelocks are really low today despite several phone calls, I've been on wifi all day though. The right way to figure those wakelocks out is to download the kernel source from one of the devs github and do some searches through the source to see where those wakelocks are logged. You might also search the battery impression thread in general, some smart folks have dissected many kernel wakelocks in there. Seems weird that you would have them in airplane mode.

I have the exact same issue. Wakelocks/Android OS killing my battery (Android OS usually 45% or higher when it should be my screen that is the biggest battery sucker).
I barely use my phone to make phone calls as well. I'd say 1 call every 2 or 3 days.
Same exact wakelocks here. I made 0 phone calls. There is defiantly something up.
I had these two wakelocks too and it turned out to be my live wallpaper that was causing it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35277041&postcount=20
Same wakelocks on my N4....
Solution in my case, delete widget locker....... My Nexy sleeps again:angel:
exact same situation: N4, sns wakelocks killing battery, phone not deep sleeping. culprit? Shake 'n Rotate! app. so add that one to the blacklist as well!
Are any of you running stock kernel and ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Im Running stock kernal and Rom and i still get sns_periodic_wakelock and sns_async_ev_wakelock Does anyone have any idea what they are or what causes them or how to fix? They seem to be on the whole time my phone is on and they suck battery crazy not as bad as most but my android os is always 2nd battery use to my screen or more depending on how i use it and it sucks cause i know i would have pretty awesome battery life if these were fixed or gone. I appreciate any help!
Apparently you can also add: lightflow vibrate on pickup feature and adding a widget to the lock screen..
PowerManagerService and sns periodic wakelock are my main culprits but I'm not sure these numbers mean there's an issue or not...
I just checked BBS for todays use and I have on 9h use 4h on sns_periodic_wakelock. I have been using DashClock on my lockscreen. I will remove that and post back later to see if that helped.:cyclops:
Hmm can anyone say if this looks problematic?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yes it does look problematic.
Basically sns_periodic_wakelock kept the device from sleeping for almost three hours.
I have the same issue and don't know what's causing it.
EDIT: Apparently live wallpapers do.
Just writing back to tell you guys how it went. I removed DashClock from my lockscreen and that wakelock seemed to be gone for a few days.
I then later updated the app, and just by updating it, I think it caused the wakelock. This time I'm uninstalling and checking if it comes back again.
Is there a known list of apps suspected of causing this?

I've had dashclock for the past two days.. Not seeing any wake locks. I have all the extensions from the app enabled.
Sns is related to facebook. If you use Titanium backup, go to apps and you can see a blue icon with a letter f on it that looks like facebook letter and labelled sns. Uninstall that and your lovely nexus 4 will enjoy its sleeeeep....
My Android OS is showing a stay always time of over 17 hours (out of a 20 hour run time where my battery is completely depleted). Is there anyway I can find out what cause it?
I am already on 4.2.2

Android os = apps . Facebook maybe ?
You're experiencing wakelocks. Might wanna do some research on the forum so that you can post logs for people to analyze what's really eating your battery.

THIS. I was having problems with wakelocks and traced them back to these few things below which got my battery life to greatly increase once disabled.
1) using dashclock extensions like FB and gmail
2) leaving google sync on in settings for the various google services
3) corporate email exchange servers
4) setting a long time variable for the phone to lock after the screen turns off (i did this to prevent putting in a pin to unlock but it kept the phone awake after the screen turned off)
5) live wall papers
There is also a known issue in the stock kernel that causes the phone to stay awake when it is supposed to go into sleep mode during extended periods of inactivity. This can be solved by using a custom kernel just as Franco r90 which has implemented patches in order to allow the phone to go into sleep to preserve battery. It is expected to be fixed in the next official OTA from google although this was also expected to be in 4.2.2 and was not fixed fully.
Same issue here. 4.2.2 stock kernel+rom, rooted
BBS shows "suspend_backoff" is at 45% no idea what's causing that.
Disabled pretty much all of the sync services but no improvement.
Interestingly right after the 4.2.2 update, the battery life was good.
Download this app and it will keep your applications from running in the background.

I'm having the same problem with the Android OS draining lots of battery. When I reboot it sometimes helps but not consistently unfortunately.

I turn off my wifi when not home so I don't think that's the issue here.. I've tried removing a few apps like dash clock and my live wallpaper to see if it helps my issue. Will report back.

Google play services has something to do with the high usage. Yesterday I was near 20% usage today I disabled it and android os is at 7%. It only affects YouTube app for me, but the browser version is fine. I haven't seen any adverse affects other than maybe losing updates to the play store and ota updates which I don't care about because that's what xda and Roms are for. Now it may be placebo, but it also seems like the ui is smoother. Battery has improved greatly with sot of 3 hours with 57% left.
Hi,
how do you disable Google play services?
Try using the app greenify if your rooted.. It's been helping my battery life. Use it on maps and that will help. If maps is set as a system app, move it or just install banks minimal gapps so you can download from play store.

I've noticed this phone has hit or miss battery life depending on what you have installed, greenified and frozen. I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where everyone could share their battery life tips and tricks on this phone.
Below I posted what I have done to maximize battery life. I have not rooted my phone yet, so none of the below tips require root.
I disabled all bloatware apps that came with the phone. I did not disable any of the Asus applications.
I utilize the Asus autostart manger and denied auto start to all my applications except music applications, messenger applications, and google photo sync.
battery sucks. drain to much.
Just use until you have 5% free battery, this should make at least your day
With Android OS taking so much thanks to lollipop, there is not a lot to hope.
We wont see a good battery improvement until we get 5.1
Luckily, that is in the future for this device acc. to Asus.
Since the issue seems to primarily be Android os draining the battery I don't think most battery saving measures will make a difference. We will just have to wait for an update
When I was looking at the phone reviews people were claiming 8 hours screen on time, I can barely get 2 hours screen on time.
The problem I'm having is that the phone never goes to sleep and is constantly awake. Has anyone else seen this issue?

I had the same problem after the latest update, no deepsleep in BetterBatteryStats (I'm rooted), I wiped everything and now it goes to deepsleep.

Which firmware version are you on. I've wiped the phone once already, did you clear any caches? It's driving me mad

I'm on 2.18.40.12 (ZE551ML of course), I restored the phone from backup & restore in settings (It may take 30 minutes or more). Before restoring I had 45+% of Android OS during the night, now 20% more or less, but, as said, also in BBS I can see deepsleep in frequencies.
Someone posted on Zentalk to turn off remote lock and scan for security threats in google settings. Not sure if it helps or not.

I wiped my phone yesterday and restored back up like you suggested and it seams to have sorted out my wake lock issue. I wonder why that is?

Glad you solved, but don't know why, maybe they are working hard on the firmware and there are lot of changes that can cause problem, maybe we have to wipe after every update, Intel processor and Lollipop are so unstable right now!

Ok so this is my battery with a normal day of use... Tomorrow ill show the results with your sugestions. My normal days have gsm calls(normal phone calls) whasapp (chat) youtube, twich, game like plant vs zombies 2, look at gmail, surfing internet, taking pics like 25 today.
I notice that battery drains a lot more while photo app open.
I use doble sim as you can see
If you want to test app battery drain, try GSAM Battery Monitor, or for some extra functionality the Pro version. Also very useful to determine what is causing wakelocks when you run into them.

Everyone is always wondering about Android using the most battery. Without doing some in depth debugging and tracing I would guess Houdini falls under Android. Because the ZenFone 2 uses the Intel processor a binary conversion for ARM instructions takes place with Houdini. More than likely you have a lot of apps native for ARM.
Force closing asus support app and zenui services app from apps setting gives me good amount of battery boost. Apart I have also disabled google books, movies, plus etc. I don't know if its placebo effect but someone can try and confirm. These app tend to restart at times so if you feel the battery decreasing at high rates again, make sure you force close them again.
Roughly speaking, I tend to get 3-5 min per percentage of screen on time with this which totals to 5 to 6 hrs on SOT on continous usage. Without the apps being force closed, I barely get 2min/%. The usage scenarios are normal web browsing, chats etc. This is using mobile data. It gets even better with wifi.
Try and let me know if this helps.
Maybe I don't use my phone as much as other people. I posted this last night on another forum. My phone was unplugged at 07:00, It's now 21:00. I have 80% battery left and the battery monitor shows 3 days left
I have received email, 3 phone calls and text messages. I checked Twitter a couple of times with the browser. I have read Google News a couple of times and played GSN Casino for about 20 minutes.
In Auto Start Manager I turned off Docs, Sheets, Skype, Slides, Translate, Amazon Kindle, Data Transfer and Web Storage. Everything else is Allow, but I have no social networking applications installed.
Its looks like battery life is a right mixed bag. At the start of the week I was suffering wake lock issue, my phone wouldn't go into deep sleep and was constantly awake. I wiped and restored from backup which seams to fix the issue.
Got up this morning and it looks like the wake lock issue is back. I don't know what to do to fix it.
Feel like giving up on the phone and sending it back if I can
