Trying to get hulu and other video content on my xoom while I"m in the kitchen. (Velcroing it on the cabinet gave me a computer/media center where I never had one before). I've gone over the following options:
* So I couldn't get the hacked flash version to play hulu and even if I did I was hoping for something a way to get more content.
* Playon costs $5/month, don't want to pay that much
* I tried remote desktop to my computer, too choppy.
* I know that vlc is fantastic at streaming (I could create a desktop stream for hulu if need be). Is there any app out there that can catch vlc streams?
* Are there any other options out there?
Thanks!
For free? None that are legal. Some people choose the Bit Torrent way of doing things. Personally I can't wait until Netflix and Hulu are native apps. Plus I hear that Xfinity will have an app soon. I think the biggest mistake that Motorola made in releasing the Xoom was in not making sure that both of those apps were ready at release.
It looks like this might work:
just stream the screen to the device and run hulu (or whatever) in full screen. The only big question: framerate.
Hulu is working perfectly for me with the hacked flash and Dolphin mini browser
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Thanks I'll have to try it.
As for VLC. I managed to get it to stream, but it doesn't work so great with desktop capture. Streaming videos isn't that bad though. I'm using the Vplayer app FYI.
So Hulu doesn't work for me because I'm stock, and they say it only works for rooted phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060374&highlight=HULU
I wasn't going to root because I was going to wait for the 4g upgrade to make sure everything runs smoothly. So everyone who is rooting I assume you will just unroot before you send it in (or you trust when they say that rooted devices are acceptable for the upgrade)?
Feel free to root, motorola already said on their official forums they will upgrade any xoom root or not. Even if they are unable to get it to work due to a software error, they will still put the hardware in and send it back.

Rooting the Xoom – will this make it ineligible for 4G upgrade?
Hey hey! Check it out.
All Motorola XOOM tablets on the Verizon Wireless network are eligible to receive an upgrade to support 4G LTE. This includes those that have been unlocked; however, those units must be submitted for upgrade with the original factory software reinstalled and the device relocked in order to receive the upgrade.
For devices that are returned unlocked, Motorola will attempt to complete the upgrade, but may be unable to update the software. In these cases, the device will be returned to the consumer with just the 4G LTE modem installed.
More details on the process will be available closer to the upgrade availability.
You could try splashtop. It is an rdp but it plays video Inc audio smoothly. It costs $5 but only a one time costs. You can try the lite version first which connects you for 5 minutes to make sure it works for you.

Thanks for the suggestion takos. It worrked well but it has a serious flaw.
If I want to stream hulu to my kitchen for my girlfriend but at the same time work on my computer this is a big problem. The solution is to connect to the workstation via remote desktop (127.0.0.2 should work) and you might need to run this hack:
http://www.missingremote.com/guide/how-enable-concurrent-sessions-windows-7-service-pack-1-rtm
Such a solution allows you to stream hulu to your kitchen and sill let someone work on the workstation on a second session.
The problem is splashtop always defaults to streaming the console desktop. This makes it useless for the solution that I (and many others) would look for.
I submitted a bug, but my bet is they wont redo their code for something so not used as often (even though every probably should if they knew about it) and because this whole thing might seem a bit iffy in their eyes as it involves mostly people running a hack on their computers. We'll see.

Just read that T-Mobile have started offering TV on 3G devices in the UK. Just tested it and it works a treat - it's free until 30th June for 24 hour passes
For some reason, I don't get the link on my Vario II on the homepage but this link works to take you straight to the EPG
http://10.111.189.31/servlet/download?page=download/epg/jsptemplates/onNow.jsp
Enjoy
Smiffy.
I know the link is truncated but if you hold your mouse over it, you should be able to see the full link in your status bar
Smiffy.
Nice one Lord.
Also got the link from t-mob
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/pages.do/our-services/internet-on-the-move/mobile-tv-costs
Yeah, I had a look at that too but it doesn't mention any of the WM phones and I don't get a link off the w'n'w homepage - it's as if they don't want us to use it
Mine didn't work straight away either - I had to tell the Streaming Media program to connect via the "T-Mobile Internet" connection and it works a treat
I'm running Black 3.5, btw...
Smiffy.
Wow
and the tv hr pass works well. Only works over 3g though not over WIFI.
How did you find this out

Thankyou, ideal while I am sat in curry house waiting for my tea!

This should also work, and is easier to re-type....
Hi,
I have just got the Vario 2 and tried to use the mobile TV. I got as far as clicking on the link and streaming media opened.
All I then got was connecting..... and then no network found.
What did you have to do to get it working?
Thanks in advance.
when the player opens have a look at menu, connection. it could need setting.
web and walk t&c's?
Just had a thought; under the terms and conditions for the basic web and walk, audio and video streaming explicitly banned. Where do those users (like me) stand with this? where did you find the link?
link is on the tmobile home page
the tinyurl link was to make it easier to put the really long link into your hermes if your viewing this from a desktop browser.
As for getting it to work. i had to click the link, agree to 24 hour pass, and then it allowed the links to open. It failed everytime for me, so idid a soft reset and since then its works faultlessly.
Awesome find.. It works perfectly on my cheap as chips pay as you go system.
One thing I'm not sure of is do I still pay for the bandwidth used ?
PAYG has a outrageously expensive £1 limit each day.. yes £1 for all your browsing etc. However its not unlimited.. and they "may" get funkey if you go over 15 meg per day. streaming video will zap this up real fast..
Down pub was streaming music vidz and news,- a nice channels selction available.. (>< Holyoaks channel too.. sigh) followed by a quick google maps to show m8's how nice the hermes is. They were all amazed. I just dont know how much bandwidth it all uses up, thus how much ultimatly it will cost, or if viable.

Reading thier t&c's , It seems that MobileTV is excluded from webnwalk and is a separate product. So you don't need to even subscribe to webnwalk to use Mobiletv.
However, you DO need webnwalk to access the t-mobile webpages related to mobileTV. So if you have a 1 day pass, each day you would need to access the website (and incur webnwalk charges unless they are included in your price plan), plus the mobile tv charge.
I think on other devices (non WM), you can instal an application to handle the charging and playing of TV, thus avoiding need for web page accessing.
Now, i wonder if the MobileTV charge is an 'extra' or whether it is deducted from my FlexT allowance?
cool, something thats works for me 1st time!
the big brother 8 channel is the E4 live footage!
A way to keep her happy down the pub
Well, I managed to get it working once, via GPRS (was downstairs, rubbish 3G reception downstairs).
Subsequently, reconnected on 3G and tried to make it work - making sure the Streaming Media app was set to connect via T Mobile Internet... No dice.
Not been able to make it work since then, I think there must be a problem with their streaming platform somewhere or the way the variables are being passed to the streaming app, because why else would it work once and then never work again? Very annoying.
you are rather fab Lordsmiff, I have spent AGES trying to find that stupid link
Not having to top up....?
Being a bit of a tight a#*e and wanting to give this a go, I was wondering if t-mob give any free credit if you register you SIM or anything like that. I just stuck a new PAYG SIM in and wanted to give it a go but am at work so can't/don't really want to put any credit on it. I know o2 and Voda do...
you do need some credit on your account to sign up for the service via the webpage which is on your phone.
However t-mobs online billing site does work with pay as you go too. so I can check how much I've used etc, and you are not charged for the streaming video bandwidth, which is cool.
One strange thing is I notice listed is a
TMO Network Coupon 2001 QOS1000 - a data link.. saying 21k,
This has been poling every hour for the last day.. I have not been charged for this.. I have no idea what this is. or if it is linked to the tv system... odd.
shame the service has been down since at least 5:45am!
Hi my thoughts (using Tytn Vario II);
- Streaming works well. I hate streaming over 3g but this works well. No breaks in audio or video. The framerate sometimes is low for the video but audio is fine all the time. Again fairly acceptable with current technoloy.
- the electronic program guide could have been better, but i guess they are trying to keep it simple for compatability with less specification mobile devices.
- Not quite 'live' TV (except maybe Big Brother). Seems to be preselected scheduled content. Most programs are small snippets - but that is fine since most mobile TV usage is about wanting to have a quick 5-6 minute view.
Can't wait for the day we can view on our mobiles the exact same content that is being transmitted on normal tv.
- Hopfully more content to appear if this trial is sucessful for T-Mobile.
- Dont really like the built in Streaming Media Player but it does the job ok - anyone know of any 3rd party alternatives out there?
- shame no BBC channels.
Finally,
- would I pay for this service? ....hmmm..maybe - a little more choice in content and so long as once I pay for say monthly access AND dont have to worry about data charges....
PROS:
Reliable and acceptable access compared to similar 'free' alternatives
CONS:
Limited choice of channels
Not enough of 'live' broadcast content
Bil
Hey guys,
Just wondering if I'm all on my own here with this problem or if others have noticed/solved it.
It seems that using the "Video Button" in Skyfire fails with error "media error: 1: -1" anytime I'm connected via 3G OR 4G, but seems to work via wifi just fine.
Any ideas? I find it hard to believe that both sprint AND clear are port blocking this feature.
its not sprint since the evo ran skyfire video fine. I haven't tested skyfire myself to know if or why that would be happening over 3g.
Agreed, it worked fine on my TP2 (although WinMo may use a different port to transport the video). Can anyone else confirm that theirs is or isn't working? I'd love to watch the daily show at work as I used to and since we're still waiting on 2.2 (I will continue to fight the urge to ask the developers to work faster )
ive also noticed that Skyfire would crash when it hit pages with some flash on it... also i get the same media error on my epic
Same problem for me. It worked fine on my vogue...
Sorry, I should have posted here. I found the fix. Sprint is filtering our traffic. Looks like they want to emulate AT&T with their crap-phone limiting what we can do with the "unlimited" data connection we pay for. Find the fix here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791156
Now if we could force skype not to require wifi we'd be in business...

Didn't try any videos through skyfire before I did the proxy fix, but my skyfire videos on flash video sites work fine for me.
I want to be able to sideload apps.
I want to be able to "tether" without the tether data plan, so I can occasionally use the Laptop Dock without spending $20/month.
I want to be able to load my apps from Google, which I think means using a different "ROM" and loosing MotoBlur, but tell me if I wrong.
I'm a long time smartphone user who's used a few different ROM changing apps. Willing to put in the time after the "rooting" I did yesterday didn't seem to do everything I hoped. Got pretty frustrated when I could only webtop in the laptop dock.
1. att should be releasing the ability to side load apps soon. they are allowing it on the samsung infuse. until then:
go to android central and search for sideload wonder machine. thing works flawlessly.
2. Im new to the tethering part here but from what i understand there are two types. sorry
3. currently there are no ROMS yet, there are pseudo ROMs available: greyblur, gingerblur. im using greyblur and the guy did some awesome work on it. both allow sideloading all day, as well as hdmi mirroring and webtopdock hack.
good luck
You can still use Google apps and Google Market surely? Otherwise it wouldn't be a proper android phone!
I can use the Market, but obviously if you normally install 30+ apps, it's awesome when you boot up a phone, sign in with your Google account, and all your backed up apps and data just show up on the new device. I did this with my Motorola Milestone and Xoom every time I'd update the OS, etc... and it works FLAWLESSLY, not to mention saves a LOT of time trying to remember all the apps you loaded.
The Webtop hack worries me, simply because I wonder if that isn't what is preventing my Laptop Dock from seeing my phone. I used Gladroot updating my phone to 1.57, and root works fine. But when I put the phone in the laptop dock, it wants to do Multimedia or nothing... and the dock doesn't "just work" like it did at the store. And I didn't think Gladroot did anything with the HDMI connect, so I wasn't expecting any issues because of it.
I think for this morning, I WILL just wipe it, removing root, etc. Update to the latest firmware again, and setup with the default options for now. Then I can at least see if the Laptop Dock works at all, using that different APN to try tethering without the $45/month plan, and I guess I'll go from there.
Once I have the Amazon Store loaded with that sideload program, I won't need that feature very often anyway.
Just signed up, so sorry if this is not the right spot for this. I tried posting in the Themes and Apps section, but the system wouldn't let me due to me not having any posts.
I was wondering how Splashtop and/or Kainy works on the Nexus 10. I wanted to have remote desktop access, but also be able to play my computer games away from home. I see videos of people playing Skyrim and Diablo 3, but I am a little skeptical . I just wanted to get opinions before shelling out some money for these apps. Thoughts?
Splashtop 2 is free to use on the same network (maybe VPN might work too for free, but I haven't tried). The anywhere access pack (AAP) is $0.99 for a month.
Splashtop works "well" but seems to have minor hitches on my own network (this could be from various of reasons though). Trying to access my computer on another network is horrible though due to my desktop's internet connection (90KB/s up, 333KB/s down). I asked if there was a way to test the AAP before I paid just because of my internet, and was told no, however, I could be refunded.
Never heard of Kainy, but I'll check it out
Edit: Kainy sounds too good to be true lol... I'll have to definitely try it out.
I've struggled with Splashtop being reliable enough to do anything with. Now that they want payment for monthly use I'm looking for a better alternative. I'll give Kainy a shot if nobody posts with any viable alternatives
I am running Netflix version 3.9.1 build 4105 and Android 4.4.2.
When I open Netflix the program just sits and spins and spins then gives me a "Sorry we could not reach Netflix Service. Please try again later (-9)". Then I clear app data and after I do that and relaunch then I get the extremely common 15001 error (that is impossible to actually troubleshoot..).
I have read multiple people having issues with Netflix, but that was when they released a patch that broke it and I am pretty sure that isn't a common problem anymore. I have one of the apps that show network activity and all I get is random hits of like 20-30 KB/s max while trying to launch Netflix. I have tried this on two completely different networks, so I don't think it has anything to do with my network.
My device is rooted with TWRP installed, but I don't see how this could have any affect on Netflix (it never did on my old rooted Nexus 7 running Cyanogen Mod).
Is there something I can try that maybe I haven't heard yet? I even tried clearing the Google Services Framework cache/data (as this helped people in the past) and that changed nothing above. Not being able to use Netflix is a huge problem for me and I am hoping someone has run into this on our devices. I imagine Netflix is one of the most common Apps used.
Thanks for any help or ideas anyone can provide. If I need to I'll restore the tablet with Fastboot, but there is no guarantee that will work and an obvious pain if it doesn't.
Edit: Read the latest comments on Netflix and it seems there are still plenty of people having problems just like mine. I guess I may be waiting for a new version to release??

I have the exact same problem! No matter what it's the same error, restoring the tablet doesn't work either.
Screw Netflix, use TV portal! https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzI_9bXSPgLUX0kwVV8wd3lsTGM/view
When you grab a movie with TV portal, then use Tubemate to download mp4 quality movies of your choice. (touch the green arrow above to get the download interface)
http://www.androidfreeware.net/download-youtube-tubemate.html
I don't think anyone has problems these days ripping off movies, however streaming thousands of movies and TV shows is more convenient by a mile (especially on a tablet).
That is indeed one reason Google & apple push to get rid of the power of personal storage and force the cloud.
When Netflix won't work when you finally settle for a movie, it's nice to have options.
The measly amount Netflix charges is worth it, they have a good service....
But as you know, traveling you are forced to use sporadic data on the road that cost. Until they fix that, I want my storage.
Thank you for starting this thread driving me nuts today! Thought I was alone. It's my son's tablet and Netflix is one of his major uses for it. Tried so many fixes and none are working. Guess we'll keep an eye out for an update.
Also, anyone have trouble with Netflix in general? I had to install an xposed mod just to get it to run!?!
Edit: I tried a much older version of Netflix and it's working perfectly: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/netflix-inc/netflix/netflix-3-2-0-build-1340-apk/
I then updated the app again and it refused to load at all. Rolled back and turned off auto updates.
How do you turn off auto updates for a single program? I know how to turn it off completely, but is there a way to do it just for Netflix? It's not like we can deny it network connection..
Also does anyone know the last Netflix version that did work? I think it was around December 2014.
I can also confirm that Netflix 3.2.0 build 1340 does work.

Go to Netflix in the play store then hit the three buttons in the top right and the option to disable auto updates should be there.
Never got around to testing other builds as that on works fine for my kid.
I believe the reason behind new versions beyond 3.7.1 not working is because of below;
"As of version 3.7.2, Netflix has begun using Forced Google DNS lookup for their Android app. This means that the Netflix app bypasses any DNS servers you setup on the Android device or on the router and uses Google DNS instead.
Traditionally we were able to block Google DNS lookups on the router and force Netflix to use alternative DNS. However, the Android app seems to not work at all if Google DNS is blocked."
In any case I can confirm that version 3.7.1 build 1711 does work as it should.
Also as recommended earlier you have to stop the app prom auto updating.
Hope that helps.
