[Q] Using Android phone with desktop Microsoft Outlook - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

This question has been raised many times, but I couldn't find a single definite answer. To sync with Outlook there is software like Touchdown (albeit only for MS Exchange) and cloud services like Soocial and Funambol. Now, how do you sync ALL fields in Contacts, for example, if they are not 100% identical with Google? The later lets you name your phone numbers, for example which is impossible in Outlook. I am using Outlook both for business and personal, and it would be very difficult to move away from it, especially as my company uses it for business. However, I find WM 6.5, or Windows Phone 7, or Blackberry not particularly suited for my personal needs. So I bought Optimus 2X, but I have not started using it, because I don't know how to painlessly migrate to it from HTC Touch Diamond 2 with WM 6.5, which is seamlessly integrated with Outlook. I have about 1600 well-organized contacts, many tasks, recurring calendar items, almost all of them with applied custom-made Outlook categories. Filtering and sorting by categories really simplifies things. I am daunted by the task of re-categorizing all of my outlook items by hand. But I need to start using Android somehow AND desktop and laptop versions of MS Outlook with the categories I have set up. What is the least painful way to do it? I can't believe there's only me faced with this problem. Thanks for your help!

Syncing Multiple Calendars

Hello,
I'm trying to get my Hermes to sync with the 3 calendars I have in my Outlook Data File - Personal, Training and Work. I haven't been able to find any calendar software that supports multiple calendars, but am using Pocket Informant with a custom view for my training and filters so that my personal and work calendar is combined on the device.
As things stand if I move something out of my personal calendar in Outlook into either of the other calendars, I lose it on my Hermes, what I'd like is to sync the contents of all 3 calendars into the single calendar on the Hermes, where I can use filters to set up the displays I want.
I've tried using PocketMirror Professional, but despite claims for Vista WMDC compatibility I couldn't get the desired configuration and it wiped my calendars completely - thank god for the recycle bin!
Anyway, anyone any ideas of an alternative work around?
I'm using WM6, OUtlook 2007 and Vista Ultimate. Thanks.
Try with new PocketMirror (WM) version 2.2.2 is compatible with Vista.

Microsoft Outlook Replacement?

Anybody know of a program that is a suitable replacement for Microsoft Outlook which can sync to the Touch?
I'm coming from the Palm platform and the Palm Desktop was so much easier and simpler to use.
I've seen replacements for the Touch contact program but nothing to replace Microsoft Outlook for the desktop.
I'd like to remove Outlook from my computer and find something that would sync contacts and or appointments to the Touch.
http://funambol.com/
There are a lot of other possibilities to replace outlook and/or activesync. But after reading the adventures blog of someone who tried them all out it was very convincing that this is the best. Actually he described 8 different solutions on his blog, most of which I had not been able to find googling for over two days.
For those of you who are still relying on Outlook: it has proven it's reliability to me from 1997 till last week. Then it crashed, refused to open my pst file with all my contacts, my appointments, my tasks and an email archive of overr 3 years. It also refused to start with a backup pst. It also refused to start from scratch with a new profile and import either an old pst or comma delimited backup.
It'll take me some time to recover from this horror scenario
I'd just like to pipe up and say that I'm not a fan of the ActiveSync/Outlook combo either. I always end up with duplicate or even triplicate contact entries. A friend of mine who uses Hotmail as his primary email says he doesn't have this problem, but I refuse to be forced into Hotmail just for this purpose.
If your primary email is GMail, then follow the directions here:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
And your contacts and calendar will stay in sync via Google's own Exchange server. Unfortunately, they don't have Mail syncing via Exchange yet for some reason. But you can set up GMail with IMAP in your Email client, or you can download a third-party push-email software which will allow for a further realtime-ness to it all.
As for desktop software beyond Outlook, I don't think I can make any suggestions, I've been on GMail for a long time now. And even more so, I've been using Android full time for nearly a year now, which is even better than my above suggestions, as long as GMail is what you use primarily.

[Q] Where's the File Explorer

I was in an ATT store today to check out the Focus. I played with it for about 20 minutes but never found a file explorer app. Does Windows Phone 7 have the same access to the file structure as Windows 6 did?

Nope. And though I'd like it, not really needed. Its quite closed on how everything works. Zune app to load music, vids, pictures, Skydrive (cloud) to load documents. Marketplace for apps.
I just came from a WM 6.1 device (HTC Hermes) and it takes some getting used too. Here at work we're still on XP and Skydrive wont work with it (and they probably shoot it down) and no Outlook coordination though I suspect MS wont ignore that forever.
Android is the closest to WM devices in that you can add and access everything.
Thanks for the reply. IMHO that is a very unfortunate thing. I am assuming that the ability to customize the device through the registry as in the past is also not possible. Which makes me wonder what Windows now has to distinguish itself from the competition. From what I have seen this is a major step backwards from my WinMo 6.5 Tilt 2.
Can you explain what you meant by "no Outlook coordination"?
Past WM devices used Active Sync or WMDC to sync Contacts, Calendar, Files etc. WM7 at this time does not use those tools or talk with Outlook directly, so there is no sync with Contacts and Calendar from Outlook. I think they will add it someday, but its not there now.
I found a work around here and got my old device to upload my 1100 contacts to the Hotmail cloud, and then they showed up on my Focus. I had to build my meeting notices though for the most part.
I'm sure a File Explorer app with show up someday, but its not a deal breaker, the phone works awesome and is a huge jump from WM6. And the iPhone is no different in having no file explorer or reg editor and its the #1 selling device.
I used a reg editor on WM6 cause I had too, to create things like short cuts etc...on WM7 its not needed that I've seen.
I also use my Live account to sync contacts & calendars. I didn't want to do that initially, but it's the best way I can find. I tried all different ways to Sync direct to Outlook, or use Google, but there is no Free way of doing it (Also not stable on the programs I tried). I still use Gmail for my mail, but not for calendar or contacts.
Once done, it works very well. I can update contacts or calendars from any pc or phone and it all syncs up nicely. It was a pain to transfer all my info from Outlook to Live. It lost some of the formatting at times, but a couple hours and I'm done. Even if I were to move to another phone in the future, I'll likely keep Live as my Calender and Contacts manager. Might even move back from Gmail? I LIVE by my Calendar because I forget EVERYTHING!
I know that someone will create a way similar to a File Explorer to explore the device and sync directly with files on a PC etc. For now though just the awesome screen, excellent web viewing and speed are enough to keep this guy happy
Ive come from all WM phones like a:
HTC Tilt
HP 910C Buisness Manager
Sony Ericsson X1a
So is the lack of Outlook sync just with personal Outlook accounts? I mean, will my calendar, contacts and email sync over my corporate Exchange server as they have in the past with 6.5?

Froyo and Outlook Tasks and Notes

So what's up with Outlook syncing in Android 2.2? Why is there no simple notes application on this new version of the OS? Why can't it sync with all Outlook features as it did in version 1.6?
It looks as though I will be forced to use Google docs and use something to sync that with Outlook. I use Outlook notes and tasks for work and really need them back on my phone.
I just needed to type and store a quick note on my phone and discoverd that there was no native application for that. Will there be a solution for this in Gingerbread??
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
no native.
i use VCOrganizer (tasks, calendars, notes contacts and categories)
(use only 1 way contact sync or u find doubled contacts on the phone)
it works also with outlook 2010 64bits
i treid many but this is the only one i found that sync also outlook notes
not free

...feel your pain. This has been my biggest challenge too coming from years of (relatively) painless Outlook to phone syncing with WinMo phones...but I am loving this more and more every day!
Basically I ended up "moving to the cloud"...using CompanionSync (worth the $$) to auto sync O2k10 to google.com (includes tasks) and EverNote to sync notes. DropBox for documents and folders. Tasks appear in the google calendar on the due date.

This problem (and a full list of potential synchronisation solutions) is well documented over at http://www.syncdroid.net/
Does anyone know is there have been any further developments towards getting all of outlooks features to sync with android??

I use enhanced email. Not sure if it supports tasks and notes, but the developer is very active on his forum for enhancements.

Synch Android w/ Multiple PCs

Tried to search on this but the terms are so generic, I didn't have much luck.
Is there a way to set up two partnerships with my Android phone, so that I can have contacts from work on my phone and home machine, but keep my personal contacts synchronized from my home Outlook private and out of my machine at work?
In other words, I want to synchronize some, but not all, groups, based on the desktop.
Thanks in advance.
Are you running Outlook at work too, keeping your contacts in separate folders (one being personal and the other work related on your home computer), if so do you have your contacts on your phone setup identifying the differences as well? How can your phone move files, can they be fed directly ibro Outlook or are they transferred as a csv file? Worse case you use one Gmail and Live accounts to sync and the Live accounts to sync with your two Windows computers. I have gotten creative when it comes to getting the information I need to me from my computer at another location regardless of what operating system it is. Gmail, Live and Cox accounts are great storage accounts and servers.
If you still need help and haven't found a solution I could help you out, it would just be easier if I knew the details of your current syncing program (if any), its capabilities (if it interfaces directly with Outlook or creates csv files) and any thing else you use to transfer your files.

Sorry, should have included the information you ask about.
Running Outlook 2007 on both desktops. It was my plan to use HTC Sync. I do have my work contacts categorized into their own group, so if there's a way to synchronize only specific groups by desktop, that would be ideal.
Bump. Still looking for a solution.
Ping. Nobody has feedback on this?
