Going to get my Nook Color now! - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all! I'm and Evo 4g owner and am familiar with rooting, flashing custom roms, kernels, themes etc. I just got a Nook Color (Craiglist $100) and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for the most current root method and best Rom (I'm running CM 7.0.2 on my Evo 4G currently) By the forums it seems like CM7 is the most popular ( I love it on my Evo). Thanks in advance....
WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO I have a nook color!

Yeah, CM7 is the way to go. But look towards to my guide for dual booting stock and CM7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053665

No need to root if you're going straight to CM7

Congrats, thats a great price!

[POLL] What ROM do you use?

What ROM do you use, and why do you use it? What other MODs have you applied to it? For the poll I just chose the ROMs that seem most popular. I'm sorry if the one you used isn't listed, just post it here anyway.
For those that flash a number of ROMs, like me, just choose the one you use most, or the one you "fall back on" when you're done testing other ROMs
And yes, I'm aware of this one, but it's a bit outdated with the ROMs.
Other ROMs commonly used that I didn't list
I'll update this if there are a number of users that use ROMs that I haven't listed (There will be, lol)
List thus far:
SuperFroyo/SuperBler (I still just count these as CM, but hey) - No users in this thread yet, but it's apparently popular
MoDaCo custom release - 1 ex-user so far
Plain ol' rooted stock - 1 user
What about the all famous superFroyo (now called Superbler If I'm not mistaken)
Not that I've every used it but there's much attention for it.
I dno what to vote for yet
I've always used CM but I now I use blayo's to test the data2ext (which isn't really great, yet)
I might go back to CM when CM7 has the fixes for GPS and 3D. But I would love to have flash on CM hopefully someday,...
We'll cross the SuperFroYo bridge when we get to it Anyway, it's basically CM.
I started with Modaco MCR r4, but now changed to B 0.2
It's Sense-based and already has most of the changes I made to the MCR rom (update Gapps, facebook, move busybox in /system, circular battery...). Only thing added is DrRomca's "amibios" bootanimation from Modaco forums
I use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870662
It is a rooted stock rom. I can't complain about it.
BlaY0's B.02
I tried every single ROM in this section, except variations of rooted stock ROMs and this is the first that really feels a good bit faster then others (data2ext enabled).
Other then that CM is very nice of course. Used pretty much every version from Indigo Beam to the latest nightlies until 2.2 got released.
I use CyanogenMod since Azure. Now I have 6.1 and I'm waiting for a fully functional CM 7 experimental build.
I haven't tried other roms, but I follow the updates on the forum. The main reason is that I don't think that roms based on the stock one will be upgraded to Gingerbread, therefore I don't want to change rom knowing that I will be forced to return back to CM.
Big fan of CM but I use BlaY0's now. Waiting for CM7.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
CM all the way. Haven't tried BlaY0's rom but seems to be getting positive feedback from users. Won't flash it though, waiting for CM7. Sorry Blay0.
CircleMOD battery with themed notification icons, BiosAnimation bootscreen, remove some system apps. Well thats about it.
Right now I'm using CM 7, because.. well it's Gingerbread Went from BlaYo's B 0.1, and it's pretty good. Actually made me like Sense again.
using CM6.1 atm (couple of days)
but as i am reading more and more, everyone saying that Blay0's b0.7 is showing better performance than cm, but cant say till i try
i am kind a new in android word, i will use cm for a while till i get the guts to install new rom without messing something up
cheers
EDIT: from 26.02.2011 blay0's rom and it rocks
CM from the very beginning (love the tons of features/settings added)...use now CM7 (usually flashing nighties as they came out), snakehult 130DPI LCD screen density, data2ext2 (thanks TGM), CWM3 (not S-Off unfortunately) , Honeybread theme
Have tried many, now on CM7 and B0X time to time.
I need better sd ...
Standard stock rooted rom, but I'm about to test CM7-RC2.
Tried CM6.1 and it has horrid for me, so I switched to blay0's 0.7 ROM and never looked back.
I'll look into CM7 when it's pushed as a stable release. I'm not one for nightly testing.
cyanogenmod7 #8 here
First real custom ROM was CM6.1.
Then got a little bored and tried Blay0 B0.X for awhile.
Now on the first release of CM7.0 and seems stable enough for me!
Only issues I've spotted so far on CM7.0 are the Menu button/Optical pad wake, all else seems sweet
Cm7, I'm loving it

Mytouch 4G tweakin!

***If you feel that this post does not belong in this section of the forums, please just send me a pm and let me know where to put it, as i am a complete noob to the whole forum thing. I have never been part of a forum whatsoever before xda. ***
Ok guys, i recently sold my motorola defy and upgraded to the mytouch 4G. It wont be here for a few days, as i ordered it online, so i figured i would take the hiatus and gather up some info and ideas from you wonderful people at the xda forum. That said, any ideas as far as easy rooting, sick/reliable roms (honeycomb preferably, but i am completely open to all and any ideas), and generally anything that you think would benefit me. I will also post a complete video run through of the whole operation upon request, and i will deffinately give bigups to the contributors and use the info given to help others along the way.
Thanks, guys.
PS. This is the dopest forum i have ever found when it comes to phone hacking, and I greatly appreciate all that contribute.
I would suggest either the visionary or gfree method of rooting. After rooting it is recommended to flash the engineering bootloader as it will be easier to recover if you soft brick your phone. Do alot of reading on these items in the mt4g android development forum. There is not a stable honeycomb ROM at this time, but there are some amazing Sense and AOSP ROM's out there (also located in the development section). I use and highly recommend Royal Ginger 2.1..which will probably be 2.2 by the time you get yours. Also, take this time to read up on and set up ADB as it makes life alot easier.
Thaks! Too bad theres no stable gingerbread roms, as i figured there wouldn't be.(I REALLY want a moto xoom) But on the other hand, I had a gingerbread rom on my defy and i really liked it. My battery use was good, it was really fast, and exceptionallyt user friendly, in my opinion. Also, I know that the MT3G had a massive problem with freezing and it was pretty unstable all around. Is this problem persistent in the 4G? And if so, would the rom you recommended fix or at least dampen this problem?
No no. PLENTY of stable and amazing gingerbread ROM's. RoyalGinger 2.1 like I mentioned is gingerbread. In the OP you mentioned honeycomb, which at this time there is not a stable ROM.
No, yea sorry i meant no stable honeycomb roms, my typing got ahead of my thinking XD.
I dont think there are really any stable honeycomb roms on any phone. This is to be expected since honeycomb wasn't open sourced (And might never be, but it's reasonable since honeycomb will be outdated once ice cream sandwich is released for both tablets and phones.)
Either way, welcome to this community of copious amounts of development and cool people. And if you are having issues deciding on a ROM, cyanogenmod is never bad. it's working great so far on the Mytouch 4g.
Also, a bit of input on the rooting method you use. It's not proven 100%, but rooting with the visionary method is safer in the long run. here's the thread with instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
Many people prefer the gfree method because it gives you "real" S-off and allows for a few more options like sim unlocking the phone. If you don't need that, just use the one i linked. people who used gfree have been getting errors in recovery that effectively brick their phone. If we learn anything more and it turns out to not be gfree's fault, it's not difficult to use gfree even after using the method i linked. Using the visionary method will still let you do everything you want otherwise like flashing roms and whatnot, but has recently shown to be safer.
also, using the method i linked will flash the engineering hboot, which will help get out of many sticky situations.
I am currently running Virtuous Fusion 1.0.9. It is by far the most stable HTC 3.0 rom out. Its a gingerbread rom, not honeycomb but most honeycomb builds are for tabs anyways unless its one of the few recently or to be release HTC phones anyways.
Virtuous Fusion is the 4th most used rom for the MT4G and is updated regularly by eViL D.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070444
It is fully compatible with Faux123's kernal
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070444.
As my signature states I am currently OC'd at 1.2gHz but the kernel is capable of 1.8.
EDIT: I rooted with the directions on theunlockr.com Mytouch 4G but its not any different from the link posted in a previous thread. Read up on the dev and general forums as they will provide the most knowledge about your newly acquired phone.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
Follow those instructions leading to perm root. I am just posting what I did. The instructions are easy to follow and those that post on the unlockr.com follow XDA as well.
Oh and welcome to a fantastic community.
Hope you enjoy your MT4G, its a fantastic phone.
Happy flashing buddy.
Thanks for the heads up kim. I will most deff. use visionary, as, currently, i dont need sim unlocking and if i do, im sure i can take it to my uncle and he' ll do it for me.
Also, thanks to rillusion. I'll be trying several different ROM's, so ill make sure to the the forementioned rom in mind, as i love gingerbread. And i know that honeycomb is for the pads, but ya gotta agree, it would be extra beast on on a phone.

I do agree it would be beastly on a phone, sadly a 1gHz processor wouldNT run that the way I would want it to.
Welcome to the community, grubbyfoot!
I also highly recommend Virtuous Fusion by eVil D:. I love the Sense interface and find Virtuous Fusion to be the best ROM I've ever run on any device. It's being updated to version 1.1.0 (waiting for the upload to finish as we speak).
When rooting, Visionary is recommended over other methods for now because of some issues that may or may not be related to gfree's method of rooting. Unfortunately, some devices will just refuse to be rooted using Visionary.
Im gonna slide this on over to Q&A...........
Oh..... almost forgot, welcome to XDA
Lol, ok. and thanks for the welcomes, guys.
You should also try the InsertCoin Rom.
i am also a complete noob, and have never been part of a forum before xda. just rooted for the first time using the visionary method a few days ago, and i am completely wowed at what rooting did. i run the faux123 aosp gingerbread rom, blue bionic theme from the market, and a custom system font from dafont.com. my friend tells me im still just scratching the surface. good luck and happy rooting! go noobs(with help from the dons, of course).
MyTouch 4g rooted, running Faux 1.2.0 AOSP 2.3.4
I recommend RoyalGinger 2.1 as well. After rooting my MT4G and flashing it with that ROM, I can finally say I'm proud of my phone!
OMG!!! THANKS SO MUCH YOU GUYS I JUST GOT DONE PARTIALLY FAMIARIZING MYSELF WITH VIRTUOUS FUSION AND I GOTTA SAY BIGUPS TO EVIL DEE AND ALL WHO DEVELOPED THIS ROM I AM ECSTATIC!!! Sorry for yelling I'm in mild shock n I'm having problems controlling the volume of my typing

New owner some quick questions please :)

I have a new nook on its way to me and ive been reading up as much as I can on the potential this device has.
From what I have gathered so far it seems best to install Phiremod on this device.I dont have any real interest in the Barnes and noble software as I prefer Alkido and use this alot on my current tablet. I also want as trouble free experience as possible.
Questions I have are as follows:-
1) Is phiremod v7 worth going for yet? Or should I stick to 6.3?
2) Is it worth upgrading the tablet to B&N 1.2 update and using ManualNooter 4.6.16 to root it or should I stick with 1.11 and use something else? What is best here or does it not matter?
3) Can I use phiremod as my main rom installed to the internal hd and have say one of the honeycomb mods or cm7 run from a sd card? Naturally the sd would need a menu for this.
Many thanks to any help in advance
1) Phiremod is kinda old. I suggest the latest CM7 nightly, or MIUI (which is extremely simple to use)
2) If you install custom ROM, the BN Software is trashed. What's the point upgrading?
3) Stick with a good functional OS on the internal hd (call it the emmc) and put an OS you like but is not stable on the sd card.
1) But what about the latest version? I understand its based on a recent cm7 nightly anyway? Maybe you were not aware of it.
2) Yes this was what I wondered. Thanks for the confirmation.
3) Yes I was thinking this.So I can have say cm7 or a variation on main drive then honeycomb on sd then from what your saying. Thats great. Thanks
I believe Phiremod was built on cm7 and development has either stopped or is well behind. I would also recommended CM7 though. It really makes this device very useful.

Phiremod is just a themed version of CM7. The stable release of Phiremod is based of CM 7.0.3 and the test version of Phiremod is based off cm nightly 110 or something like that.
So yes Phiremod is outdated and the CM 7 nightlies and Miui releases are the most current roms you can get.
Thanks alot for the info guys I will go with cm7

[Q] 2.2.1 Iced Glacier to Rooted 2.3.4 FootBall ROM Help

It's been a while since I have messed with Root on my phone since putting on Iced Glacier 1.6 for 2.2.1 Android for my MyTouch 4G.
So I need a little help or clarification.
Following this post directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175536
I updated to the 2.3.4 ROM and for some reason occasionally get the phone showing the "MyTouch" white screen after exiting an app.
Also get "MySense" failed to load or forceclosed when starting up the phone. I think that is what it says...
I re-installed my apps using Titanium Backup, but I think I am missing a few even though I made a full App and System back up the night before doing any of this new ROM rooting. I also did a "Fix Permissions" in ROM Manager.
1: Is Footballs the most basic stable rooted ROM out right now?
Or what is recommended for battery length and smoothness?
2: How does Virtuous Unity compare in stability and speed and battery life compared to other ROMs right now?
I liked Iced Glacier for it's baseness and speed and lack of bloat-ware and I don't change ROMs often. I want one that works and is stable and I want to stick to it.
Not wanting to brick my phone moving to new stuff.
My other big question is:
After installing Footballs Rooted ROM, I still get the 2.3.4 OTA update reminder.
How do I remove that ????
And yes I did a lot of searching before posting this in order to refresh my brain but could not find a precise answer...
So thank you to anyone that can help with these questions and steer me in the right direction.......
I run virtuous unity on one of my my touch 4gas and it is stable and all functions work including tango,,, love the fact there is no bloatware.

It all depends on what you like actually. For a stable rom that you will stick with for awhile that is just like the update to 2.3.4 without the bloat. I would recommend GenerationX v5, its the most up to date rooted/debloated stock version. If you like sense, but not mysense. They Virtuous Unity 1.29 seems to be the favorite stable right now. Keep in mine there are AOSP roms out there like faux's and cm7 that people enjoy as well which are excellent speeds and awesome battery life over stock type roms.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I'm honestly not sure what the difference between Sense and MySense is since I don't keep up with this stuff anymore.
And if I flash one of the ROMs I of course need to make a full wipe and then install. will this erase the homepage icons and need to re-install all my apps again ?
Like i said before i'm not looking for flashy themes, just no issues & good battery life & speedy response when doing things on the phone.
Thanks again for the help....

New Droid X

i just got a new droid x and want to root it. what is the easiest and fastest way to root my device and which ROM is stable and smooth?
There are plenty of fast and easy methods for root... Just check the DX n00bs sticky. Just make sure your DX hasn't taken the .621 OTA. As far as roms that is really more of what you are looki for. For Gingerbread Vortex is the best of the blur based roms otherwise cm7 and miui are both full of extra customization but aren't as stable. If you are falling adventurous there is always the cm9 beta based on ICS. Since it is a beta there are a few issues but I have been running it a daily driver for a month and it truly is the fastest my phone has ever been. Camera even works now(to an extent)
is there a way that you can give me links? please
I just wanted to toss out the Liberty 3 v2.0 ROM is pretty good as well. I run at 1350ghz max 400 low and the battery life is fantastic. I've gone a day or two without a charge many times. It is a gingerbread ROM still however. I haven't found a great working ICS ROM. The ICS roms are good but not perfect.
Everything you need for Liberty 3 v2.0 is here:
