Should I do it? - Xoom General

Alright, I'm deeply considering buying a Xoom. On contract, with the normal dock, a keyboard, and a case. It'd end up being about $800 in the end, so it's kinda be a big pill to swallow. My unibody MacBook Pro costed only $400 more! Anyways, I see the use on a tablet and how convienient it would be, I'm just not sure if I should do this. What do you guys think? What are your gripes about it, and what do you like about it? Any thing I should be aware of? And do you think I should get the 3G/future 4G version or just the WiFi version? :/ And does the hardware acceleration actually make things (such as browsing) as smooth as iOS devices? I still miss my iPhone's great scrolling... I've used Xooms in stores, and the browser didn't seem amazingly smooth (better than my phone, but not amazingly better) I heard that graphics acceleration is turned off by default though. Is that true? Because that would explain my not-perfectly-smooth experience. Your thoughts and opinions would be appreciated Random thought: from what I've seen, the Xoom forum here is filled with mostly friendly people, it's pretty cool.
I would be using this as a laptop replacement btw. (Minus PowerPoint presentations, Photoshop, and such)

I say go with the xoom. You will be happier in the end. It is much more suited as a laptop replacement than ipad. I would suggest buying off contract if you can. I don't know how you connect but wifi only xoom is 599. I use this model and tether 4g with my phone if needed. I also replaced a netbook with this. It was wifi only so I don't miss much. I rooted mine and OC'd and it runs very smooth. Homescreen page scrolling is not as "snappy" as ipad but I think that will come. Remember honeycomb is new and will only be getting better. And you can always find good support from the members here at XDA. Also, search online for your accessories. I found my dock and keyboard on Amazon for about 35% less than bestbuy. Hope this helps.

My advice having only used my Xoom for a couple of days is not to bother if you are going to spend that amount on peripherals for it.
I love my Xoom and bought it to replace my Netbook. It's quick, snappy, and oozes potential even though some of the apps are not yet up to the standard they need to be and Honeycomb is still a young platform. I'd recommend the Xoom definitely. However not at the price you are looking at when bundled with addons. Buy it as is or don't is my advice.

Get the WiFi only and tether.
I'd get one with the 3G/LTE if data rates weren't a minimum of $20/mo... when I probably won't use the data allotment. For the same price without a $1000+ two year commitment, I can just tether to my phone when I'm in places where I don't have WiFi... which is not very often.
ETA: I have a Nook Color right now, going to get a Xoom (WiFi only) probably next week or the week after, as soon as I have the coin. I just want some of the capability that the Xoom has over the Nook!

Wifi version only. If you think 800 is bad then don't forget to factor in 2 years of monthly data fees. It really won't restrict you. I went from a 3g I pad to xoom/tether combo and I haven't noticed any difference save for a lower monthly bill.

I agree, get the wifi and tether. This is what I do with my Captivate. I tether thru the Captivate's wifi.

If I hadn't gotten the 25% off deal when it was released I would have waited for the WiFi only version. Tethering with my jailbroken iPhone works great! I am actually tempted to try the Asus Transformer WiFi only as well. But the Xoom is definitely nice.

Through all this fog, let's find a glimmer of hope.

Okay, we DEFINITELY know that ATT (as expected), buzzkilled the SH*T out of the accessories for the Atrix. But, let's see possibilites of the future.
First off, I believe the phone can still be $149 if bought from CostCo/Bestbuy with the 2 year contract (hence, the proof of pictures and Amazon), and $199 through ATT. The accessory docks though... yeah, blew us out of the water.
Although, it's a tad bit early to say the least, to give up on these accessories (as for most people, the REAL deal killer is ATT's idiotic mindset that it is considered tethering your phone to an object that works only as good as my flashlight (laptop dock)). We have lots of brilliant minds waiting to get their hands on the dock (hopefully, if the pricing still wasn't enough to kill it), and there may be possible solutions for not having to get the tethering add-on price to it.
We all know many of us here already tether with our grandfather unlimited smartphone plan, what's the loss in trying it out with webtop.
Prerequisities:
We would have to find ways to buy the laptop dock not through ATT so they don't force change our precious current plans
Ideal:
We can use the laptop dock (regardless of price paid for the accessory) and we wouldn't have to be paying for the tethering add-on.
Possible Problems:
ATT and Motorola have figured out a way to "lock" laptop dock usage without the tethering plan. I've not the slightest clue as to how they will do it, but it's very possible.
Possible Solution:
Some devs find a way to bypass those requirements and we'd be able to use the dock scott-free. After that, we can treat it as how we treat how we tether our laptops.
So, we can look up to this, buy the Atrix for 149 or 199 JUST for now, and hope that in a couple of months there will be a solution to this madness. Hell, ATT may put it on sale because of low sell rate, or just competitive pricing, and by then some devs have figured out some ROMs that let us use the webtop app.
NOT ALL IS LOST YET GUYS..... WE DON'T NEED ATT!
Mark my words, bootloader will be locked far worse than on DroidX. They will encrypt the **** out of it.
This is the last straw, I'm spending my last days with AT&T and switching to VZW with MUCH better network, LTE, Xoom and Bionic.
I mean, it's still a bad ass phone by itself. I didn't plan on getting the docks either way, so I'll take my Atrix along with my unlimited data and have one of the best phones out there spec wise

It's still a really good phone. Basically a bionic with 1gb ram and finger scanner.
What happened to the 1gb ram thing is it actually 1 gb ram.
If not can some developers hack it so all the 1gb is used for android?

you can be all pissed off at AT&T and be pessimistic about everything or you can take it for what it is.... a very powerful phone with a great display, lots of memory, lots of battery etc.

For me, the glimmer of hope is that the most powerful and impressive phone to date can be bought on contract for $150-$200.
I never had a use for either dock.

yep I agree, IF the dock is not around $150 it's too much BUT I would forget about it and just look at the phone by itself. If alone the phone is not enough then I say move on, meaning, wait for a better phone to hit in a month or so. To me the phone alone seems like a great phone...as long as it itself is not too expensive... Time will tell I guess for all of us.
It is easier to be positive in my neck of the woods though cause I don't think Bell will block sideloading and tethering etc..

They didn't block sideloading for Samsung's Galaxy S. Can't see why they'd do it for the Atrix. And waiting for a better phone in Canada may take way more than a month The only other "big phone" announced is Telus' Desire HD! That's so 2010...
The reason the laptop dock will require tethering is because it uses a full desktop Firefox browser, hence you will be loading full desktop websites. If you were to use your standard dataplan, loading full desktop websites will immediately eat into your data usage.
My $.02.

Yep, that's ATT counterproducing itself. It's stupidity at it's finest.
I can picture how ATT thought about the pricing:
"Oh hey, the internet is mostly excited about the laptop dock and we are getting such a huge fanbase on our Atrix... Let's jack up the price of the laptop dock and add the so-called tethering on it... that'll DEFINITELY kill their joy."

Yea, if you aren't interested in the laptop dock then the phone is still a legit deal; I really, really wanted it though and the fact that it requires a tethering plan eliminates the possibilty of me geting it.

I agree. I think the reasoning for the tethering requirement is quite simple: economics.
Look at it this way: If Motorola prices the dock at $500, and AT&T subsidizes the price down to $300 (if bought as a package), where will the $200 come from? Obviously it isn't in their interest to give away something for nothing, and AT&T obviously subsidizes devices in exchange for a contract. So I'm sure AT&T is figuring that the $200 discount should be made up for by paying for tethering.
The fact that Moto thinks the dock is worth $500 is still idiotic, however. The real dealbreaker of the tethering plan is the loss of unlimited data that's required for those of us that have it.
I would bet that the laptop dock drops in price pretty rapidly, especially since AT&T/Motorola are going to sell about four of them at that price.

At $800 I still think I'll be picking it up pending a couple of confirmations.
The first being that the HDMI outputs the entire screen like on the Notion Ink Adam, and not like my EVO with only outputting from 2 specific applications.
Second is that they won't require a charge/service to activate WiFi. I have no interest in mobile data. If I need access where I don't usually have it I can tether it to my phone.
I want honeycomb, and I want the higher resolution screen over the Adam, so I'm willing to pay more for them. Until it's released or an official price (rather than a leaked possibly faked/mocked up ad) I'll have to wait and see.
same. my nexus one tethers very well. With unlimited 3g plan from tmobile, im all set on data.
I voted that the Xoom is too expensive for my taste. To be honest, the Toshiba tablet is actually better spec'd than the Xoom. I think I'm going to wait for that one. It's rumored to be $500 wifi only.
I'm getting it regardless. My verizon account is under a military suspension until I re-activate it at no charge, and I currently have a $160 credit on it lol. I just found out, so it's almost like I'm getting it for $640. Hopefully it gets subsidized by vzw for 300, then I can just get it and cancel, then really get it for $650.
I'm not worried about price, it will get worked out... all this talk about the price should show motorola there is a huge consumer demand for their tablet.
I'm a no but with a caveiat. I don't need a 32 gig tablet. If Moto comes out with a 16 gig version that would fall more in line with my price point.

I'll bite if the price is $700 without this bogus wifi activation fee.
But rather than buying first day, I'm now planning on waiting to see if TMo's G-Slate is any good. I doubt there will be Xoom shortages, so I see no reason to be first-in-line.
Yes. I don't think there'll be any shortages.
Although I can't see LG going significantly (or any) lower than the xoom given its 3d features.

I'm on board with existing conditions. Notion Ink Adam is still vapor to me. As much as I applaud their David and Goliath struggle that is increasing rare, I must face facts. There is no guarantee that they will be around in 2 years, hell they could be hemorrhaging funds and be under in the next 6 months.
I also don't think the 1.2" smaller screen on the LG G-Slate will make up for the extra 5mp camera, and 120hz capable screen. Plus, who the hell asked for 3D in a tablet. It's as bad as Sprint's stupid kyocera dual screen phone. It's an industry first AND LAST.
Toshiba Tablet seems like a botched job. How does a tablet get a fancy photoshop/flash website before a name . I don't suspect there will be many cheap tablets this year without sacrifices in quality. Example the semi-crappy screen in the Viewsonic G-Tablet I returned.
It's XOOM XOOM XOOM for me. I just hope I can hold back the tears when I charge 963$ for the XOOM and the Folio case.

How much do you think it would drop? I don't think there is much difference between the 16/32gb memory anymore. I highly doubt that the difference is more the $50 and that is probably a high estimate!
16 is standard on almost all new/upcoming devices. I think all the vendors are just depleting their stocks.
I think Toshiba has learned from the Folio 100 tablet disaster, and the will come with a much better product. Not too many companies get a second chance in such a short period of time.

One possible issue I have with the G-Slate is lack of an SD card slot. I've been looking at images and reading through descriptions, and not only is there no sign of a slot, but it looks like they're marketing it as a device with 32GB storage... period. Also, I agree that the 3D is pointless and unnecessary, but I'm still willing to give the tablet a fair shake.
If all reports are wrong, and the Xoom is closer to $650, I'll buy it on day one. If it's between $700 and $800, I'm waiting for another month. After all, we know that HTC and Asus are in the mix as well.
I think we need the option of "I will when the price comes down".
I told myself i would cringe and jump for the 700 price point. 800 - that is hard to justify. Yes, people, i know it's comprable to the ipad (with those specs), which is why i bought an iPad off craigslist for under 400 bucks - because it met my price point. I could literally take a weeklong cruise for the same price.
As for the contract - no thanks, this will be on wifi unless I am on a road trip or something. Even then - the Evo does wifi hotspot.

Looking around the market, I don't see much room for the XOOM to drop. After owning a Viewsonic G-Tablet, I think I see the shape of 500$ tablets. That tablet was good, except that it skimped on pretty much everything. It had a substandard screen(bad viewing angles), substandard touch sensitivity, a finicky wifi adapter(possibly software), and it seems that they installed the accelerometer wrong. Apps that only ran in portrait were always upside down.
I am not sure, but I think the Toshiba Folio 100 was only marginally less of a train wreck. A $650 XOOM would be fantastic, but maybe impossible. I think the iPad is only as cheap as it is because of some unique and smart investments by Apple, and their extremely iterative process of baby steps forward. This cheapens their process. Also they can, not saying they are, take a loss on the tablet, or use a razer thin profit margin and make it up in apps. Motorola has to make their money on the XOOM itself, Apple can play a different game. Then again there is a company with no buying power, Notion Ink, that confounds me. Perhaps the industry has me brainwashed.
I want to just go to sleep and wake up on the 24th.
DCVIPERBOY. There is no contract. Just Verizon forcing you to pay for one month of service to ensure they make some money on this.
Anyone see the FCC report on engadget? Looks like the wifi version is passing through. Hoping it'll launch the same day as the 3g/4g version. 650 could put moto back in the game.

If there's a wifi only version of the Xoom I'd really consider it...
I dont need a 3g plan with a tablet - I can use my phone as a hotspot for that if need be.... why would I want to pay twice monthly?
also I'd hope it would be cheaper wifi only ;p
Buying, but waiting for wifi only. Evo with wifi router ftw.

Anyone with the successful order with the 25% off coupon plan to cancel the order?

For some reason, after reading the many negative posts about the Xoom, I now want to cancel my order that I got with the 25% off coupon.
Things that is the deal breaker for me is the following:
1. Cannot play 720p .mkv videos
2. Mediocre screen/display
I went to Best Buy and saw the Samsung Galaxy Tab and just love the brightness of the SGT. It is so vibrant.
Also, reading the posts about the SGT indicates that it can handle 720p and even 1080p flawlessly. It can also be replaced with faster ROM to make the SGT even better.
So I am thinking of cancelling the Xoom order from Motorola with the 25% off coupon and just get the Galaxy Tab instead.
Anyone has the same feeling?
....or I can just keep the order and not open it once I have it and sell it for $750 on Craigslist. This would cause a little bit of a hassle though.
Heck no! I'm keeping mine!
If you don't want to keep it, you should sell it on Ebay or something. You can make a profit if you sell it for under $800. [ninja'd]
Even if they don't want it, why would they ever cancel their order? Even if they have no intent to use the device, they basically have $150 free on the way to their house when they sell it. Even if they sell it for $700 just to get it off their hands they just made $100. lol.
And good god why would you ever buy the Galaxy Tab, with several new Honeycomb tablets coming in the following weeks.
Is this a joke? It has to be. A galaxy tab over the xoom? Lol
It will play mkv files once the software gets fixed I'm sure.

People with issues are the ones who speak the loudest. I'm not worried at all about isolated incidents. As a launch G1, N1, and now Xoom (but not yet received) user it comes with the territory.
If I were worried about a lack of apps, bugs, or flash at launch etc. I would have trashed my G1 right away. I remember the android 1.0 days when I had to wait a month before the market was live. Even then, there was only a few dozen apps available.
I'm treating 3.0 the same way as 1.0. Full of potential. Just have to have faith after an update or two it will be amazing.
Xoom to Galaxy Tab...WUT?
The Galaxy Tab is good but its not in the same league as the Xoom. The screen isn't that bad, its bright and extremely responsive. Samsung will probably always have the lead in screen technology but it isn't as bad as you think. Once the Xoom gets an update it will not only handle 720p video but 1080p as well. Getting the 25% off this thing makes it a no brainer bye.

Typing this from my week old Samsung Galaxy Tab. I already have a large tablet device (ipad) but needed something portable, so the Xoom is out of the question especially after I picked it up and realized it's pretty much a landscape device.
The Galaxy tab is a great device and trust me 7 inches is the sweet spot if you actually want it to leave the house on a regular basis (other than vacations). Personally, if you care about having the latest OS, I would wait for the HTC flyer. If you don't care about portability, I would just wait to see reviews and releases on the other Honeycomb devices.
If you don't care about the latest OS, I would highly recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab. I haven't touched my ipad in a week.
Just sell the Xoom on Craigslist and make a nice little profit.

There is no way I would even touch a galaxy tab after using a Xoom. 2.2 was not meant for tablets and the processor is so slow.. even after I developed a kernel to overclock it.

[Q] Xoom advice

Hello,
I am after a bit of advice. At the moment I have the original iPad which ought in Dubai for £160 brand new. However iv found that I don't really use the tablet a lot. After a bit of thought I realized that it is because it's wifi and only and unfortunately there isn't a wifi connection everywhere is the world. If the tablet was a wifi one then I believe it would get a great deal of use, and lower my phone bills in the process as I'm using around 2gb+ of internet use on my mobile from Internet browsing which incurs additional charges.
So question is should I buy the xoom?
I looked at the lg optimus tab as I do have the optimus 3d , but after a little reading I discovered that it doesnt have a 3d screen so that's out. There is obviously the galaxy tabs coming out, however I'm not a fan of samsung in the slightest , had the original galaxy s for a little while and was really not impressed.
The tablet will have to be on contract as I'm not really able to dish out 400/500 for a sim free one.
I do like the look of the xoom and despite it still rocking 3.0 in the uk the 3.1 update should be around the corner , and I will be rooting the tablet anyway.
If anyone has any better suggestions for a android tab on paym contract except the xoom please surgest away. The only other one I could find was the htc , and despite owning a ton of there phones the lack of 3.0 is a seriously downfall.
If anyone could offer a bit of advice about owning the xoom as well as the app choice that would be great.
Thanks for your time ,
Jordan

Jordan, it will be best for you to hear from a Xoom owner with your same potential configuration as I have the US wifi only Xoom, but I wanted to answer you to get it rolling. As piece of hardware, the xoom is superior to anything currently available. That is my opinion but I believe that I speak for many others. The Xoom is heavier but stronger than many other tabs. Someone said it felt like something made for the military. You might not like that but I love its toughness. Also, it seems to be really hard to actually "brick" by rooting, poor installations, etc. There are some things you really shouldn't do, but even then, people have brought their Xooms back from the edge of disaster, so it's pretty well made. Google support for the US wifi model is excellent. Motorola seems to be getting a black eye in Europe for taking a long time to update, but you are aware of these issues according to your post. As you know, apps will or will not be available depending on your location. I am 97.5% satisfied that I have every possible app that I want or need to make my Xoom a superb tablet computer. I have good 4G coverage in my city so having an unlimited 4G personal hotspot works wonders with my wifi Xoom. It's a bit too large to use as a phone, and I don't always have my Bluetooth headset on, but I actually could get rid of my (non-android) phone and use the Xoom with Line2 for $9.99/mo. I use Splashtop HD to access and control my PC desktop from anywhere. I have sdcard, thumb drive, 750GB HDD and cloud storage on top of 32GB internal storage with the Xoom. As you can guess, I really love it.
Your experience may be different, though since you will root, you will have all of the same capabilities plus the 3G. If you have an android phone you can tether your Xoom and provide the connectivity that way. Maybe you don't need a 3G Xoom, just a good phone data plan.
Thanks very much for the advice and the notes about your xoom. It's fine to read reviews on products but they don't really tell the full story. So the facts you have stated and what you are able to do with your xoom is very promising .
I would consider the 3G wifi hot spot , I have done that on my iPad however if your doing it without a charger then the battery of your phone really doesn't last very long. (remember that iv got the lg 3d which isn't really a beacon of perfection when it comes to battery life) also due to the stupid uk networks vodafone do not offer a unlimited data pplan and tethering stacks up data usage badly.
To be honest I m pretty excited for it and may very well make a trip and get one come Friday.
As you say the specs are brilliant which helps the longevity and it's not difficult to keep it updated with later versions of android through root or motorola themselves .
Thanks very much for the reply ,

i too are interested in the zoom 3G, but i also have other choices which includes the galaxy tab 8.9 or the LG 3G tab. i do prefer the smaller tab of the three which are the samsung or the LG 3D, anyone can comment on these.
thanks

Some buying advice?

Well, I am on a low pay job, and with school and everything it is difficult to save as a university student. Anyway, over the year k have managed to save about $600 and I'm really thinking about either getting a new phone, or buying a tablet. I still have my EVO and it works fine, however I really like the epic 4g touch... Then again I also love a good tablet, but right now I'm leaning more towards the phone. Is there something I should wait for my 2year upgrade (in may) for, or should I dish out the money for the epic touch/tablet? I'm free for recommendations and also reasons on why I should get that specific stuff. Everyone knows the EVO has the best xda community, let's keep it that way. We don't need flaming, arguing, or iPhone lovers.
Thanks.

In my case I am hoping Sprint carries the Nexus Galaxy. I am due for an upgrade in April. Maybe go for a tablet if you really want one (Transformer Prime?) and keep saving for a new phone. Good Luck.

be careful with the tablets from sprint, most of them are not unlimited bandwidth, so I would spend your money on a phone.
If you want to save money, and you have a family plan just add a new line, you won't pay but more than $10 extra dollars a month, and have a new phone at a much lower cost. Which if you do the math actually saves you a lot of money doing it this way. Yeah you'll have a line with no phone on it, or you can put your evo on it and give it to a friend/family member and get some money every month.
I shelled out $500 for a phone out of contract once, and I will never do it again. You usually feel like the pne getting shaffted in the end. Especially when I had to send it back to tmobile multiple times because of the ECC chip being defunct. (partly why I switched to sprint)
Of course you're call, but just something I've noticed.
That's some great advice. Is there any phone on Sprint that I should wait for that would be better than the epic 4G Touch?

My GF just got a 4g Epic Touch. I have had an Evo since launch. I also have an Asus Transformer and have had an HP Touchpad.
If you like to mod and root, the touchpad is a good option if you can find one at the $99/$150 price point (which you probably can't). If not, I wouldn't bother with it. I sold mine for a profit and the only thing i miss about it is the aspect ratio. I preferred the taller screen in landscape when browsing the internet and viewing my computer desktop compared to the transformer.
The transformer is nice. Don't pay over $300 dollars for it. I bought from best buy for $300...it was a brief price drop, but I suspect it will become the permanent price soon enough. If you want a tablet it's a good option...others are too. Don't buy the dock unless you need epic battery or REALLY want to use the trackpad rather than touching the screen. Cheap bluetooth keyboards work fine otherwise.
As far as the Epic 4g Touch - In my time with it, I know several things.
I HATE samsung's android skin
I had to spend several hours on XDA to get the GPS to work at all.
The screen is amazing
It has a bigger footprint than the Evo...make sure it fits in your pocket
If you plan on modding it, the first one obviously doesn't matter that much. I considered upgrading at the same time she did. Now that i've spent some time with her phone, I'm glad I didn't. It just isn't a big enough upgrade. The screen is great, but the hardware isn't that much quicker in day to day life. If you want it for gaming, perhaps a tablet is the better option.
I've read some articles that Sprint will be releasing an LTE phone middle of 2012. Having lived in two Wimax markets, I think wimax sucks. I don't want to be locked into a contract on wimax when LTE comes out, so I will be waiting until then to upgrade.
Edit: Also, I don't know why you would buy a 3g/4g tablet and pay for data. Just buy a wifi and tether it to your evo.
Sprint will be going LTE by late next year. Personally, I'd wait to use my upgrade credit for that.
I've always had problems with GPS on Samsung phones. In my opinion, the EVO is the best phone Sprint has right now besides the Motorola Photon. Sure, it's not as powerful as the EVO 3D or the EVO design, and it doesn't have the Super AMOLED screen that the Nexus S has, but I like the large screen and the Sense interface.
Of course, with all things like this, that is my personal preference. YMMV.
I say you wait it out man I feel like 2012 phones are gonna awsome just look at the galaxy nexus. I'm sure the other phone manufacturers are going to step up there game also plus sprint is going LTE soon so I would wait

If you are really in dire need to upgrade I would buy on market place from reputable members, found a great deal on my evo and soon to be ns4g. You can sell your evo to balance the cost. That way you don't waste your upgrade and by the time lte hits you will be able to use your upgrade.

Keep your Evo 4G and use WiFi tether on a Evo View 4G tablet. The 32gb new in box has been $219 shipped recently and does not require activation. I bought a 16gb Flyer for my daughter, the scribe pen is awesome!
