2) Wipe Data
3) Wipe Cache
4) Wipe dalvik cache
5) Go to mounts and storage
6) format everything that doesn't start with SD, so format boot, system, data, dbdata.
7) Install your new ROM
8) Reboot
Basically 100% chance of NO bootloops or running into errors. Don't know why I put 99.9%.Good Night~

No Offense, but there's plenty(I mean tens hundreds ) of posts saying this.
And step 6 is not necessary, I have flashed over 20 Roms and havent had to format my sd.

Thanks xHoLyx, you beat me to posting the same thing. And step #6 is classic gunnermike speak. I'd recognize that anywhere. Adrynalyne just released EC01 ROM and radio, and both he and GizmoDroid have posted slightly different methods for installing the new ROM and radio. Would you like to also post those exact steps in a how to thread and make it seem like you came up with the steps?

So I was reading the Royal Ginger Rom thread, and his instructions on the 3rd page I believe say to:
"Make sure when you wipe you wipe both on the main page of recovery. Then go to advance and wipe dalvik then go to mount and format boot, system and format sdcard. Then flash."
Have I been missing something here with all the ROM's I've been flashing? With all the ROM's I've flashed, I've only done "full data wipe", "wipe cache", and "wipe dalvik"
I've never done a format boot, system and fotmat sdcard.
And doesn't formatting a sd card wipe everything off it? Or am I thinking of something else

When you do full wipe /system is untouched so you should go format the /system, /boot, do full wipe. You can manually remount it but this is done auto when reflashing and reconstructing the image. Far as the format sdcard goes I take it that it access /sd-ext part which you should leave it alone if you don't understand.

So I should always do a FULL wipe then with whatever rom I flash? Could explain some "oddities" I've been getting at times lol
And just leave the format sdcard alone?

1) Keep your battery 100% (trust me saves you alot of time recalibrating)
2) Format /system, /boot from Recovery
3) Wipe dalvik, full wipe
4) Flash whatever via SDCard

Ah ok, I was totally unaware of step 2. I've just done "wipe data/factory reset" and the two cache's.
Interesting what I'll get from here on out now. What do you mean by "recalibrating" when you said to keep the battery at 100%?

Thats why we are here. Normally most leave it alone and only time we recommend it is when user is doing major upgrade for example switching roms or having some issue that none else can replicate. You are now good to go

thats sorta interesting
ive not once seen it mentioned in any of the rom threads or just around xda to wipe both boot and system until seeing it in the royalginger thread
not saying its wrong...but it should be maybe conveyed that only wiping date/factory reset, cache and dalvik isnt always sufficient

Well normally people just do full wipe (/data, /cache, /sd-ext, /sdcard/.android_secure) and wipe dalvik but if you want to properly do it then you can format /system manually or do it via adb fastboot erase system -w. This is more clean way to do it as you get rid of the /system which is not normally covered with wipe.
A point of clarification. As I understand it, the Dalvik cache (used by Mobile Java apps) is a structure within the /data partition. A "full wipe / factory reset" formats /data, so a wipe of the Dalvik cache in addition wouldn't actually do anything.
Wiping the Dalvik cache along with /cache is usually recommended for ROM "upgrade" flashes, when /data is left intact.
I had a really hard time installing custom recovery... I finally thought I had it and
wiped data/factory reset
format data
format system
wiped cache partition
but I did not flash a ROM
when I tried to get back in the custom recovery it just keeps going back to the factory recovery.... so i am stuck...
what to do please help...

My suggestion is that your read through the forums here as there are several "beginner guides" that will get you started.
After you installed your first custom rom the process proves itself to be easy:
- Flash a stock ROM (2.2 nordic)
- Acquire root using SuperOneClick
- Instal Clockworkmod recovery/2ndInit (I prefer 2ndInit)
- Transfer the nandroid backup (.zip file) to the root of your SD card
- Reboot phone when led turns blue hit volume down
-Wipe data
-Wipe cache
-Wipe Dalvik (It's under advanced)
-Restore -> select update zip from sdcard
- Browse to the nandroid backup file you put on your sdcard in step 4

Might be a stupid question, but anyone know how to do this? I want to only keep PSX And neo with no other data on it (Such as games that require downloaded data, apps and etc). Wiping data on CWM doesn't wipe everything (Yes I did cache and dalvik as well), would wiping the sdcard wipe everything and leave the ROM? Hopefully someone can help, thanks
Also, if the only way of wiping brings me back to stock/unrooted, would I still have CWM installed to install custom ROMs and such still?
These are the wipes you are looking for:
1. wipe data/factory reset
2. wipe cache partition
3. mounts and storage > format sdcard
4. advanced > wipe dalvik cache
That should leave you with a empty/clean internal sd card, no data (apps, settings, etc.), and your current rom and kernel.
if you want to completely wipe everything and go back to stock Android, just use one of the toolkit and flash stock image. it will wipe everything in the phone.
Or just fast boot the images including the userdata file it'll erase the entire phone memory. Toolkits are convenient but you should know how to use fastboot too it saved me when my recovery wouldn't boot and there was no ROM on the phone.

I installed it after my battery died during updating Cyanogen to newer version - I panicked a bit and needed working phone asap, so I used mcGyver hack and flashed it with RSD Lite as I found in some guide.
Now I want to install any better system on top of it (it's real crap - all google apps crashes immediately for example) Cyanogen 10+ would be best.
There are some similar threads, but they wanted to downgrade system, not upgrade.

II. Installing SndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk
III. One of following:
a)
1) Go to Custom Recovery.
2) Wipe data/factory reset, wipe Cache and go to Advanced ► Wipe dalvik.
3) Go to install zip from sdcard ► Choose zip from sd card.
4) Flash cm-10-20131030-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip
6) Wipe Cache and Dalvik again
7) Restart.
It didn't boot in 10 minutes (Motorola logo) so I flashed sbf again and returned to I.
b)

Well.. After I flash something I don't wipe cache and dalvik , this maybe should be the problem..Before I install something I do a data/factory reset , wipe cache , and then wipe dalvik. You should try after you install something don't wipe cache and dalvik..
OK, i fixed it.
With DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_CEE_ROOTED_No_Signed.sbf from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542956 i got root, after that i installed SndInitDefy_2.3.apk and was able to flash CM10.
Hi, I'm from Nougat 4.5.14 and these are the steps I made:
1. Flash codeworx then reboot to twrp
2. Wipe cache and dalvik
3. Install OS 5.0.2
4. Install magisk
5. Wipe cache dalvik
6. Reboot to system
However after rebooting to system it started bootlooping so I decided to reflash OS and wipe data as recommended. So I power off the phone then hold volume down + power to boot to recovery. However when I boot to recovery, file folders started to become random names like its encrypted. Luckily I backed up my internal storage and data so I'm okay to flash everything but can someone help me how to fix the twrp random file names and the steps for reflashing the OS?
EDIT: I rebooted to recovery, wiped dalvik, cache, and data. flashed OS 5.0.2, wipe dalvik cache, flashed magisk, wipe dalvik, reboot to system and it does not proceed to circling dots. So what I did is just, wipe dalvik, cache, data, flashed OS, wipe again dalvik cache, boot to system and it proceeds to circling dots however it takes so long that I can consider this as bootloop. I'm very tempted to wipe everything (data, system, internal storage, cache, dalvik) then just flash again the OS but I don't know if it would work so I hope someone could give me some steps how to fix this

You have to format data... Not just wipe it. From TWRP go to format data, write yes, and let it format everything. Then transfer over to the phone all the fil a you need (ROM, kernel, no verity zip) and flash them as per the instructions of your rom thread. You should be fine.
