I walked in store 437 and informed Assistant manager "Nick" that my usb port has more than likely detached from the motherboard because it stop charging last night. I also informed him, once he finds its defective i cant wait for another phone. I need him to get one off the shelf. Nick "assistant manger informs me he doesn't have any EVO's. So tech "mike" took phone apart and USB port fly's on table. Mike "tech" says...this is the problem, the port is no longer soldered on the phone. I looked at him like he was a dummy and said your exactly right, lets get me a phone. Tech says "oh!! this is your fault" . Lmao Oh yea, i carry the mother board around in my pocket or something.. Long story short they refuse to replace phone. Called Account services "retentions and they sent me to another store telling them to replace it" I get to store they take phone apart and say... oh yea, this is a defect that effects many first generation EVO's. They gave me new phone box cables everything and i was out the door in 5 minutes! I went back to the store 437 to ask Nick "manager" why he told me he didn't have any phones when inventory states he does. Nick said "i didn't say that, i said we dont have any repair phones" WTF What is a repair phone first of all and second i assume you mean refurbished, which no store has refurbished phones!!!!! <-----My story for today Feel free to give your store # that gave you issues regarding same issue or similar!

I hear ya, I a electronics student myself. I took mine apart when it happen to me (around launch date). I was amazed how not thought out the part was. Ok i understand using surface mount components is quicker to have a robot arm placing them and then basically putting the motherboard in a oven to make all the connections its how everything is done. But not to form any plastic around to give it no where to go would have been the best thing to do.
It is the most used port and really needs to be a tad more rugged. Honestly it just sit there with space all round it and only that touches it from the case is the outer rim of the case. Only way i could have made it work would have been to hot glue the thing I ripped all the pads
Yea mine is doing this too. It charges but only if the cable is in the right position. Since its a bad esn phone I doubt ill get it replaced. Im looking for any successful stories of anyone who has fixed this on their own or even attempted it.
i assume you mean refurbished, which no store has refurbished phones!!!!!

Actually most stores carry more refurbs in stock than new ones, so customers dont have to wait to order one.

I worked for a Sprint tech store and a charging port coming off the motherboard is 100% not covered by the store. Chances are you called customer service off hours where the calls get directed out of the country which is why they said that they will replaced the phone for you. Basically so they can get you off the phone. Listing the names and numbers of the store that exchanged this phone for you is dangerous. You should be praising SPRINT that they were dumb enough to replaced this for you when you should have had to pay $100 or buy a new phone. PORTS BROKEN OFF THE MOTHERBOARD ARE PHYSICAL DAMAGE!!
Refurbished /reconditioned phones are what you receive when we order you replacement phones. Every service and repair store will have some of these in their inventory.
Well, just so happens I had this very problem yesterday.....took the phone in to my local store.didn't even bother to unroot..came back in a few hours, they said they couldn't fix it.but, they gave me a brand new phone.the bad things was, I was running the rooted stock OTA.on the new phone was froyo.rooted it and I am now back to rooted ginger!!!!

Not 100% of the time. Yes, if the person dropped their phone, or treated it like crap, that is physical damage. But for most of us, who take care of our phones, and the charging port just happens to break by just plugging in a charger, that is NOT physical damage. That is a hardware failure.
I just started having this issue last night and I hope Sprint lets me get a replacement. I have insurance, so hopefully it's covered.

No, in Sprint's eyes, if the charging port is completely broken off the board, then its considered physical damage. I am a Sprint employee at a repair store, and we deal with this every day. If its just loose, they will normally cover it. But once they open the phone up, they determine if its just loose, or broken off the motherboard. On the other hand, it is up to the tech that you get and the manager on duty.
As far as the type of phone you get, they would normally give you a refurb, unless they are out of stock in the warehouse, then it would be a NIB.

No, In the real world that is a global defect affecting many first gen evo's. You know what makes sprint a **** company? the fact that they dont issue a recall for faulty craftsmanship. Keep backing your sheepishly run company. Poor buisness decisions and poorly made products will inevitably be the last straw for many diligant sprint users.

this is my issue!
mine started to come off and in trying to solder it with a very low wattage DIY kit it ended up falling off. the solder material (not sure what it's called, my dad did the soldering, he's a professional welder (although read: not in electronics!)) wouldn't stick and it kept coming off. after that my screen wont come on, although the battery has about 70% left and the phone does turn on.
is this something I can get repaired at a sprint repair store and pay a fee, like say when your screen gets messed up?
when answering above, in case it makes a difference, i'm on MetroPCS and NOT a sprint customer.

Wouldn't HTC issue the recall? They manufactured the phone sprint is just the carrier. Every one is quick to jump on sprint, but I see the issue being HTC's. Just my opinion...
Poop
I had a 0003 and just had it replaced about a week ago because of the USB breaking off. At the time I hadn't seen a thread with anyone mentioning this happening to them and I thought it was just me but over the last week I've seen several. When the tech opened mine up he pointed out that the moisture strip was red indicating the phone had water damage. That phone had never been remotely close to water, I'm sure it was probably due to me taking to phone in the bathroom while showering or something. I ended up calling Asurion and had a brand new 0004 at my door the next afternoon. I'd rather not have had to pay the $100 deductible but I figure I'll get that back after getting my 3D and selling this one.

So, this weekend I noticed some dirt under my screen. It isn't too bad, but I paid good money for this phone and I pay $7 a month for TEP, so I want to be completely satisfied with what I have to make it all worthwhile. I'm one of those paranoid people that pre-order the BodyGuardz full-body kit before the phone has even arrived. Anyways, my phone is absolutely mint condition with the exception for some noticeable smudging on the top left of the screen. I even have a Case-Mate Barely There case on top of the full-body BG to protect the camera.
So I took it to a local Sprint store and waited nearly an hour for them to start working on the phone. The local rep told me it would be 2 hours to get it fixed. No problem as Outback was right next door. I grabbed some food and when I returned I was handed back my phone. Only, the screen was completely scratched up and the top and bottom front edges of the phone were chipped. I calmly approached the rep and said that I wasn't going to accept it as it is in far worse condition than when it arrived. I wasn't surprised when the rep said that they had replaced my screen with one that was laying around. I should have taken pictures of the condition so you guys know what I am talking about. I'm surprised they expected anyone to be ok with that. Anyways, so I have them put my old display back and they said that I would have to wait for a new screen to come about so I can get it swapped.
On the way home, I called customer service and explained the situation. After explaining to him that I was not going to waste any more time going through a similar situation in another store he was able to get an advanced replacement sent to me. He told me it would be a couple of weeks as the device was being preordered. I didn't mind as he told me that I would most likely be receiving a new device rather than a refurb due to the low availability. Sweet right?
So I get home today and I am pleasantly surprised to see the replacement waiting for me. I open it up and I noticed a crappy, $5 USB charger (that's odd), what seemed like an original EVO battery but turned out to be a black battery wrapped in red paper (I thought this one was pretty funny), a brand new back cover, and what looked to be a brand new EVO (display sticker was on and everything). Awesome!
Not quite. As I turn the device over, I notice the camera is completely scratched up. I mean, really scratched up. The rim around it was also all chipped. The kickstand had some scratches on it as well. Here we go again...
After being transferred about 3 times where I had to verify my account and explain the situation each time, I was able to get another replacement sent my way. Same story, might be 2 weeks as it is low demand. I explained to the rep that I don't want to keep going through this and I have had similar experiences with replacing my Palm Pre in the past and asked if there was any way he could request a new device. He said he wasn't able to as was not presented to him in the system. He then proceeded by saying that I could keep the charger and battery for my troubles. I giggled. It was as if they knew they were screwing me over and sent me those as if it would satisfy me. I have dealt with my replacements from Sprint and never have they just given me extra "goodies".
I'll most likely be cancelling my 5-line service with them if I don't get a flawless refurb or a new device from them. I have spent way too much time and energy dealing with this type of situation with my Palm Pre, and now with my EVO.
I was already pissed about the $10 additional smartphone tax and the screwed up discount limitations, but this is just pushing me over the edge.
That is exactly why I don't even bother with insurance... they are especially horrible on sprint but I got am illegally rebranded motorola when I was on centennial... Hated their insurance service
There is a reason why Hitler blew a gasket yesterday.

Good Luck...
Good luck with that flawless idea, I went through 3 refurbs before I demanded brand new phone. On inspection of the new phone, it has light leakage around the gasket and a pin hole next to the home button that light comes through.
I have given up on HTC and Sprint. Once my contract is up, I am either jumping overboard or researching phones thoroughly
Im sorry to hear about that dude. I have had some trouble with sprint but just recently I got a BRAND NEW out of the box phone for free. My battery was shot and it wouldnt charge or turn on so I went in and told sprint that it wouldnt turn on and apparently they didnt think to try a different battery, they gave me a brand new phone and sent me on my way. needless to say, I had an extra bat and it worked just fine.
How is it Sprints fault that you got dirt under your screen and then wanted them to fix it? You should be happy that they do anything for you. If that was an Iphone apple would have looked at you and then laughed for about 3 hours and then said sure sir will replace your phone for $600.00. DO you really think you will get better service somewhere else? I've got news for you, you won't. I for one am very surprised that Sprint does anything for cosmetic damage without a deductible. Take your 5 lines somewhere else and when you come back wining we will welcome you back.

The moment I am liable for a 2-year contract when purchasing their phone AND pay their full-protection insurance, it is TOTALLY Sprint's responsibility to address the dirt under my screen. It isn't like they're paying for the device out of their pockets. They're simply acting as the middleman between the client and HTC's warranty department. It's the least they can do for someone who is devoting 2-years of their wireless service costs to them and is paying their TEP fees.
I don't know what you're talking about but I used to be with T-Mo for 5 years and NEVER had issues such as these. I always got brand new devices as replacements. I don't know how it is nowadays, but that's how it was 2 years ago.
BTW - Dust under the screen is not cosmetic as it is affecting visibility of the display much like dead pixels would. It is also something that is not supposed to occur on any device.
Finally, your little condescending attitude is not going to help you in life. Good luck!

He's right. T-Mobile has the best customer service. I replaced my G1 twice in one year. Might have been a refurbished one but it was like new. The best part was I never had to go to a repair center. I made a phone call explained my problem they asked if the water indicator was red and that's it. Sent me a new one in the mail and I sent mine right back no charge.

Actually, they are paying for the device, out of pocket. You know how the phone actually costs 500, and you're getting it for 200..?
Akarol,
Being a service manager for a sprint store it bothers me that people have to deal with that stuff.. if any of my service techs did that to people i would slap the **** outta them.. I'm sorry that a service center has treated you that way and with 2 phones none the less. Was it a corporate or just an authorized service center?

Makdasamurai: Thank you for understanding. The sad thing is that it was a corporate store. One of the largest ones here in Orlando (by the Florida Mall). I made the mistake of going to an affiliate store in the past with my Palm Pre (Five Star Cellular) and I will never do that again.
What bothers me is that there is this disparity in service from store to store. I read stories here about people going in and getting a brand new phone on the spot. It's not like they're not being reimbursed that phone by Sprint. Right?
Backdown: I understand what you're saying, but that's nothing new. That's how contract works. They give us a discount, for our commitment with them. Some situations don't even require contracts but the compatibility itself locks you into a commitment such as video game consoles, printers, etc. Trust me, they're making a ton more money on the service than they're losing on devices.
I've been through a very similar situation, so I'll give you some advice. The ONLY people on the phone that can send you a NEW phone, is retentions (account services). If anyone else TOLD you they were sending a new phone, its a lie. That's why you got it so quick, because they send out a refurb instead of waiting for the new one to come back in stock. The lower level reps do not have the power to order a new phone, even if they think they do.
Good to know. I'll be sure to tackle that department if my new replacement disappoints. I just wish I didn't have to go through all this turmoil.
So I'm getting out of my car yesterday, and my phone was in my case attached to my belt. However, the magnetic flap the prevents the phone from sliding out apparently didn't make good contact and the phone slid out of its case and landed right on a corner and turned the screen digitizer into a spider web of broken glass.

I don't want to go through my insurance for several reasons. Therefore, I went on eBay and ordered a new digitizer for about $34 shipped with Priority Mail. However, I'd also like to replace the actual plastic case that holds the phone together, as it has some broken clips and the phone looks like it wants to come apart. However, I can't find anyone selling it. There are some video tutorials on Youtube and it seems like an easy enough process, I just can't seem to find the part.
Does anyone know where I can purchase an OEM exterior case for this phone?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Resolved and I double-posted the thread like a moron.

Doesn't Sprint have some new repair policy where for a flat fee ($35) you can bring your phone in (even out of warranty) and they'll repair it?

I have to double check with my supplier, I used to be able to sell them fo 65 plus shipping but you knw nowadays, prices go up everyday lol, I'll try to get back ASAP for you guys. I might hurry too seeing as there is interest in it. When I mentioned it a while ago when I had them, no one was interested
Go to global direct parts you can get oem cases and parts there for good prices. I think an oem case in there is 30 dollars or so.

Well, I double-posted this thread trying to edit the subject line to add "resolved" to it. My other thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12141063#post12141063
On this thread, I added a link I found to a US seller on eBay. I got the housing for $25 shipped, and it brings the adhesive already. All you have to do it peel the tape and place the new digitizer in place.
Digitizer = $35 shipped
Housing = $25 shipped
Total cost= $60
Yea, I could have paid $40 more and had Asurion send me a refurb, but then I'd have to start over from scratch and then if I have one more claim within a year, they kick me out and I have no more insurance. I'd rather save my claims for when I do something really stupid and completely break my phone or flat out lose it (knock on wood).
In the meantime, it really sucks because I feel like I'm going to cut my finger on the screen. Works flawlessly, though.......incredibly enough.
Edit: The $35 Sprint deal was a no go. I was told by the in-store rep of the repair center I went to that they are not allowed to even touch the phone because there are obvious signs of physical damage. Even then, the $35 charge was for people who did NOT have insurance on their phones. I asked if I changed the digitizer myself, could I then bring the phone back in to replace the case for cosmetic issues and pay the $35 and was told yes. However, I do not think she knew what she was talking about and I called a different repair center where I was told they couldn't do a damn thing for me. That's when I went ahead and ordered the parts myself.
This just happened to a co-worker of mine and a Sprint repair center here in Kansas City replaced his screen for him. It was covered under his insurance with no deductible. Surprised the hell out of him.

Well, your friend is a very lucky guy. Even when Sprint was doing this a short while ago, there was a $35 fee associated with it. Your buddy's luck was as good getting the problem fixed as it was bad when the phone broke to begin with. lol
crap, I never bought insurance. So they don't do the 35 dollar thing anymore? That was very appealing which is why I waived insurance on my girlfriends evo.

Same happened to me less than 2 months ago. My heart stopped when my Evo slapped the hard tiled floor. One repair center told me to go online (Asurion) and file the claim. Instead I went home & went to a different repair center the next morning. They replaced the screen & didn't charge me a dime.
The $35 repair fee does cover exchanges or repairs without insurance. However, the policy was slightly modified as of Feb 1st. Any LCD/lens/digitizer with multiple cracks or a single crack longer than 1 inch is considered damaged beyond repair (DBR). An insurance claim would have to be filed. If the digitizer simply stops functioning, it can still be replaced under insurance or the $35 repair fee.
For those that would want to do the repair themselves, be warned. There are two different types of Evo screens. One made by Sharp and one made by AUO. They are not interchangeable.
Update:
The process did not go well. It was actually very easy, IMO, but it turns out that the LCD cracked along with the digitizer when the phone fell. Therefore, it broke even more during the process of removing it from the digitizer and became useless. However, I feel that if the LCD would not have been damaged during the initial fall, that I would have been able to do it.
With that said, I called Asurion for a replacement and the Evo is back ordered so I have to wait 7-10 days for them to send me another phone. In the meantime, I have been reduced to this:

I have two of these, and like 7 Motorola Star Tacs. Yes, Star Tacs. lol I picked the lesser of two evils.
I've been having issues with my charging port for some time now. I've had intermittent issues where the port would not charge and then today, it finally broke off apparently. The Sprint corporate store said they could not fix it and to call Asurion. I'm sure I have the same issue a lot of Evo users have had in that I'm sure they are going to want to charge me the $100 deductible.
How can they call this physical damage to the phone? Plugging it in is a normal activity and there are plenty of documented cases of the charge port coming loose or breaking.
All I want is for Sprint to replace my Evo so I can be on my way. I'm having nothing but bad luck in my endeavor. Has anybody successfully gotten Sprint to replace their phone without going through Asurion? What did you do or say?
I have the same issue. Your phone is probably covered under manufacturer warranty still. Contact HTC. Takes two weeks.
I haven't sent mine in yet. I purchased a battery charger and spare batteries until I figure out how to live with my phone.
Good luck!

I've heard of Sprint doing that, claiming it's 'physical damage' and and that they refuse to fix it. Asurion, if you have it, is actually quick, you'll have your phone in a day or two. However, you get dinged with the $100 deductible. If you are unsuccessful at getting Sprint to replace it, I gaurantee you that you could find an electronics repair place and have them re-solder the charging port. Supposedly, for someone who knows how to do that type of thing, it's a simple and quick task to do. I'm sure it would be far less than 100 bucks to have it re-soldered. Also, I was reading a thread about this very topic, where someone who did have a lot of electronics experience, said that the solder joints on the charging port are terrible, and a poor overall design to boot.
I wonder... being that any sort of plugging in of a cable puts stress on that charging port, do you suppose that a charging cradle is better or worse for the phone? I'd guess better.....?
FYI- I had the same exact issue and the Sprint Corporate store replaced it for me no questions asked. I wasn't even able to unroot because the battery died.

Same deal for me.my charger port broke while rooted.I just took it to a repair store not the corporate one, they looked at it then pulled up my account information then activated an evo they had behind the counter and I walked out, that easy! Sorry your having problems, if I was you I'd try a different store. I used the store in Tavares, Florida so you can look them up to see exactly what type of store they are. Good luck to ya!
easy answer: its physical damage, if something is broken then it is not covered by warranty. doesnt matter how it happened, if its broke you did it. use asurion.
real answer: its a grey area. sometimes these ports do break off, and while yes technically it is not covered by warranty or esrp, generally if the phone shows no other signs of physical damage a tech will replace the phone for you. keep in mind that the letter of the law states it is not covered though, so if that store choses not to replace it they are properly doing their job. the techs and stores have repair quotas, and exchanging those phones does cost sprint a lot of money.
if the port is just lose it would have been fine, but its its completely off the board its considered physical damage because it could have been from normal wear and tear or you could have used a pair of pliers and pulled it out. you can try htc but its gonna take for ever and you still have to pay for the parts.
sprint fixed mine in jan...no 35.00 charge (i dont have insurance) it broke again this past week. The ordered a replacement phone. Will be here monday...no 35.00 charge.
Guess it just depends
I took mine in the day after it started acting up - not rooted. I just took it to the Sprint store closest to me. I have insurance & was past my 30 days. I told the guy, he didn't even ask questions about it. He filed it through Asurion and told me to come back the next day after 2:00. It didn't cost anything. But then again... he was flirting with me, so that could have something to do with it.
I'd just try another store, I think it depends on who you get behind the counter with stuff like this. And if you know any pretty girls that will go for you - try that. I've had 3 EVOs and didn't pay for any of my replacements.

Sorry, but I have to call BS on most of this (not what you are saying, but rather Sprint's policy)
These devices have a 1yr manufacturers warranty. Sprint should take the hardware for the customer and swap it with HTC....so it shouldn't be costing Sprint a dime (except for labor, which is payed for already).
And frankly if Sprint doesn't want to be the middleman for manufacturer swaps then they need to stop putting their name on the hardware.
Its the same issue I have with the different Corporate vs Franchise Sprint stores...seriously, if you put a sign saying "Sprint" on your store, then you should be prepared to represent them 100% by offering the same services. Sometimes its like showing up to a McDonalds and being told that only the real locations have fries.

I've had my Evo since launch day and my charge port was having the same issues.
Called HTC about the warranty and they said it would not be covered.
Took it to Sprint and they swapped it out for the $35 fee since the device was still under the manufacturer's warranty period. I think some stores know this is a recurring issue with this phone and are not putting up much of a fuss over replacing them.
My advice, keep trying different stores until you find one that does it.

Call customer service and ask for Account Services. Tell them your situation, and how this IS a manufacturer defect. Tell them you will cancel your account if they dont do anything about it. They will either send you one, or put a note on your account for the store to replace it.
IF by chance that doesnt work, email [email protected]. That's the Executive Offices, the same people you would talk to if you were to file a complaint with the BBB, only this takes a day to respond, not weeks like the BBB.
fix it yourself
i had this same problem. i took it in a week earlier when the port was just wiggly and the store said they couldnt do anything.
a week later the phone wouldnt charge at all. i take the phone and and the tech takes it
he took the port out of the phone and taped it to the reciept and said that the phone was damaged beyond repair.
i ended up calling sprint form the parking lot and found a sprint person who would setup an invoice to send me a new phone and id mail back the broken one. however the tech at the store refused to take the "damaged beyond repiar" tag off my phone.
after 2 hours on the phone and at the store it ended up getting replaced.
i was massively pissed.
tl;dr: try a different store.

What a bad mentality to have... Account services will do everything in their power to help resolve your issue, however they have no ability whatsoever to send a replacement device, they will need to contact a store or tech support to have your device fixed/exchanged. If they deem the device unrepairable, you will have to use insurance or go through the manu warranty.

Yes I agree, but sometimes it is unfortunately a last resort that works. :/ But to put this all to rest just try another store and keep trying. Its worked for me and countless others. Some people just dont give two $h!ts about anyone or there problems and wont go above and beyond to help.
I went into sprint last week because my charging port broke and I couldn't charge my phone. To my surprise they said that it's not a defect or hardware problem and that I would have to claim it on my ins and pay the $100. Well with the 3D coming out soon and me being such a tight A*% with my money, that $100 wasn't going to cut it. So I figured out a way to get a New Refurb phone from Sprint for only $45.
Here's what I did
I called around to some local cell phone repair places here in DFW area. I found this shop in Fort Worth that would replace it for $45. I took it in to get repaired and was told that when the charger port broke it pulled the sync strip off the board. Which means my phone will charge now just fine but I won't be able to sync it up with my pc again. Noway i could live with that.
I know enough about the evo and the hardware to know that the mic is soldered onto the board and that it cannot just be replaced at the Sprint store. Sooooo! I bet you know where I'm going with this? Your right!! I blew out my mic on purpose. How I did this is very easy and truly undetectable. All I did was blow air from my air compressor in the mic hole, maybe 5-10secs. I then opened the voice recorder to make sure it was out,It was.
I took it back to Sprint and told them my mic wasn't working. he said that's a real common problem with Evos. he began to tell me that they repair it and give them 10 mins. I knew they couldn't do it on site. 5 mins later he comes from the back and tells me that the mic was soldered on the board and they have to replace it, which I knew. 2days later Sprint text me and I picked up my new evo for $45.
The bad thing is that you'll have to use your blue tooth or headphones to make calls until the new phone comes in.
we shall not discuss insurance fraud here

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
instead of being a dipster like the OP let me give you all some actual advice.
First my Background
X-Corporate sprint employee
Close ties with management, techs, and sales reps at retail locations.
Charging port failure on the EVO 4G is a known issue, there the corporate store should know this, if for some reason they are stupid, which can and will happen, politely inform them of this, if your not getting anywhere with the rep, politely ask to speak with management to look into this.
if your charging port is broken due to normal use, and not you plugging it in and swinging it around your head like a lasso, you will be covered, even without T.E.P. insurance plan (and unless they changed policy its covered even after the 1 year warranty on the phone)
As a cautionary note, if you bring your phone in to a corporate store, and they take your phone to the techs, and see your phone is damaged beyond repair, it will be flagged and notated in the system as such, and even if you go out and do some crazy stuff like this guy, and bring it back, they will Pull up your device in E-Ticket and see that its DBR and will not fix it anyway.
So guys, if you have this issue, do the smart thing, and handle the issue politely as you cannot expect every rep to know everything.
I wasn't asked for any of my info from Sprint to flag. I was just asked what the problem was and then it was taken to the back. The TECH not REP was the one that came and spoke to me and explained to me what the problem was. He stated himself that he thinks the ports should be covered due to the fact it does happen so often and that the port isn't connected securly enough to the board with the proper temp grade solder.
Is what I did morally right? NO!! But Sprint and other cell phone companies screw over the consumer everyday, but that's ok! So when the consumer finally gets over on the corporation its sooooo BAD!!
In no way is this ins fraud because Asurion was never involved. This was under hardware warranty and being my phone was bought in Jan I really don't think me or anyone else should have to fork out more money for something that's only 5 months old.
2 wrongs dont make a right, and they don't need to ask you for any info other than to just scan your phone.
and I never said that it happened to you, I said it could and properly should happen.
not to mention the solution to the problem was so easy, you just were to lazy or inept to handle it properly.
also, yes, it was still fraud
and now the phone may get refurbed without the original problem being addressed.
If the charging port is pulled clean from the board, solder joints intact, then it's covered under the known issue.
If the solder joints are broken and circuit board is peeled, it's damaged beyond repair.
Unfortunately in our store right now we have no RECON phones so we are swapping with new in box since they are also backordered...mildly frustrating!
Ur story is awesome. I think the 116 dollars a year should be the deductible. I know there are always people that take advantage of the system. I have done it before but I also thinks it sucks for the real problems we get screwed out of with deductibles on top of monthly premium charges.
They should consider your premium as the deductible unless its more than once a year. I can understand water damage or lost/stolen. I just don't think physical problems should be cause for deductible.

The "damaged beyond repair" can be argued as long as there's no obvious signs of abuse and if cust. service gets involved, we both know that we're ordering a replacement for the customer.

Who cares, insurance fraud or not. It's not insurance fraud if you not playing $7/mo for insurance in the first place. They should have just fixed it the first time he was in the store. Most of the people (techs) I've dealt with in the Sprint stores are complete idiots that won't even read Sprint's policies on Sprint.com. :|

Sprint EVO Replacement
I have been a customer of Sprint 12+ years and my experience with repair/replace of devices seems pretty typical. Some repair centers have treated me fine and one other consistently work at screwing me over. As with all new devices, there are manufacturer issues which have nothing to do with the user (bad screens, charging ports, non-functioning buttons etc.). As a corporate customer I always had a rep that would take care of an issue even if the local operation couldn't/wouldn't. I have not abused their staff nor have I abused my equipment in any way, I still have a perfect functioning Samsung i300, PPC6600 and Touch (Don't ask why I keep them around, I don't know). Each one of these needed some repair over the 2+ years I had them activated. Sprint has had many repairs centers around Metro Atlanta over the years, closing or consolidating and re-opening them from time to time. It has been my experience that you have to avoid some repair centers, those that take your device out back and come back to you withing 10 minutes with the "Wet" battery story - I have never had any of my devices ever get water or moisture on them except one and I willingly paid the deductible for that one. Recently I had the not charging issue on my EVO purchased June 4, 2010, 9+ months. Because I had to take it to the local/nearest repair center which I had problems with in the past I was apprehensive but confident I had done nothing wrong or abused the device. The tech took it out back, came back 45 minutes later and informed me that I had abused the charging port on the device and that it had come unsolder-ed and would have to go through Assurance to replace it, to which I asked her to show me. I insisted that was a defect as opposed to abuse and got nowhere. It took some insistence that I believed I should not have to pay ANY deductible. She ask her superior and was granted a one time exception to their policy to replace my (Abused, according to her) device. I have since then gone to what was my local Sprint store with my son for a new phone. This store, near our mall had closed and the independent repair center a half mile away had taken over the Sprint space. I recognized an employee who had previously worked in that store for Sprint and we stuck up the conversation about my recent repair and the trouble I had. He informed me that Sprint was well aware of the charging port issue and if I had brought it there there wouldn't have been any problem replacing it at all. He checked my device and discovered that the battery had become over heated and swollen, most likely due to the charging port problems. He ordered a new one at no charge as Sprint was aware of this also.
Moral of the story, sometimes you may have drive to a different repair center or take unscrupulous measures or insistence to get a problem resolved with big companies who aren't able or willing to do the right thing on their own, Sprint being no exception.
This charging port issue, which mine phone has, is another reason I'm leery about getting another HTC phone. I think the quality of their phones is highly overrated.
Everyone keeps saying that the broken charger port is a known issue with Sprint, but I recently did not have any success from this angle.
I took my phone to a local Sprint repair store and the tech opened the phone and said my charger port had came off the motherboard. It looked like a clean solder break to me, and he said he wasn't allowed to fix it and it wasn't covered.
I then called customer service and they also said it would not be covered by warranty. I mentioned that this is supposed to be a known issue with HTC EVOs and they said it wasn't. I spoke with her supervisor, and she also insisted that it was not a known issue. I then spoke with another supervisor who insisted this wasn't a known issue.
Is there something that I'm doing wrong? How can I get them to acknowledge this?
Yesterday I wasted about 3 hours of my time with Sprint. The power port on my 7 month old EVO began acting up, so I went into one of the authorized retail stores. All the lady does is blow on the power port like an NES cartridge, and sends me on my way. Sure enough, her idea didn't work. So I called tech support, explained my conundrum and that's when they informed me that an employee at the store (who happens to be my ex's friend), had ordered a refurbished EVO for me when he found out the power port still wouldn't work. I told the tech on the phone that I will not accept a refurbished EVO when A.) It's still under warranty, and B.) I've got insurance on it.
The tech says there is nothing she can do, so I demanded to speak to her supervisor. I'm a polite guy and was never rude to the staff, but I reminded them that ATT, T-Mobile and Verizon had all replaced my phones no questions asked (AT&T and T-Mobile I pulled out of my ass). Immediately the supervisor offers me a choice of either an EVO Shift or an LG Optimus. I went ahead and chose the Shift because I like having 4G along with a physical keyboard.
The next day the guy at the store texts me and says the deal can no longer go through because the refurbed EVO he ordered had arrived at the store for me. Again, the replacement I never asked for in the first place. His stupid mistake caused me to spend an hour and a half on the phone with various customer service reps who tried telling me I was SOL. They even had the balls to offer me a refurbished Blackberry and a plethora of refurbished dumbphones. I told them I knew it was in their notes of what deals were being worked out, and I wasn't going to downgrade my phone over this. Finally I threatened them that I would be more than happy to pay the termination fee and return to Verizon, and they caved.
Finally the idiots running the customer service line put in the order for the EVO Shift. I was ready to bludgeon their "techs" with a blunt object over their stupidity.
So final note, did anyone switch from the EVO 4G to the Shift? How did you like it?

*Note: Not all Sprint customer service folk are bad..just 75% of the ones I dealt with yesterday.
I went from the evo to the shift in may, and I just re-activated my evo to take it for a spin again. The main thing i was missing was the root ability (I took the OTA update on the shift). I just got bored of the stock phone. I definately love the physical keyboard though, and although the Shift screen is a bit small for my likings, it did the job. I'll most likely be going back to the shift shortly, it's a solid phone and if you like physical keyboards, you'll definately like it
I feel for you. Yesterday I spent 3 hours on the phone with customer service then tech support then finally the tech support manager. Only to find out blasted those three hours because the tech support manager had never heard of the screen separation issue. You know the issue the phone has had since launch day. At least you got a replacement out of it. They refused to replace mine and told me to co.tact HTC.

The Shift is a decent phone. The size of the screen takes some getting used to after the EVO, but the battery life is definitely better stock because of the reduction in size. The keyboard is pretty good, if you want one. It feels zippier than the EVO.
My wife likes her Shift a lot.
I told the tech on the phone that I will not accept a refurbished EVO

Umm, you have a 7 month old used phone, and you want a brand new one? That's asking a bit too much. Yes, your phone is under warranty, but it's standard practice for ANY company to replace warranty issues with a refurbished device.
B.) I've got insurance on it.

Then call Asurion, and pay them 100 bucks. You will still get a refurb.
Anyway, even if you would have taken the refurb, most of them are fine. Once in a while you will get a bad refurb that still has problems, but its not that big of a deal, just take it back or call, and ask for another refurb.

Please explain why you deserve a new phone on an old 7 month old phone? You, don't.

Only reason you got a choice is because the EVO is on backorder. More than likely your replacement is a refurbished phone as well as there is no magical "new" or "refurbished" button when replacements are sent out.

Good job on an empty threat. Every company will send you a refurbished phone. You're lucky to get a new one. The only idiot is you thinking you are owed a new device for your broken almost year old phone. I will say the store rep should have let you know a replacement was ordered though, other than that, you are in the wrong. Cancellations threats no longer work, notice you still had to speak with tech for the replacement and not retention?

After I got a refurbished they sent me a new one due to screen seperation and a crappy vibrating motor. I asked for a nexus but they are out of stock so they're gonna call me in two weeks when it's in and gimme a nexus. I have tep

Yet I call and the tech support manager says the screen separation isn't a known issue.

It depends on the rep you get. I just happened to have a really awesome one. I told him I had a refurbished. He didn't know what seperation was so I explained it pops out of the bezel and the crappy vibrator. I explained that I understood the tep program and he told me I could get a shift or a nexus cause he assumed the EVO was on backorder. He checked for a nexus but they said they're out for the next 2 weeks. Then miraculously the evo was in stock somehow after he did some digging. He told me this was to hold me over till the nexus is in. He put me.on with a super. I complemented the rep and the super and it was a pleasent enough experience. Lesson is: cross your fingers and hope you get a good rep and come across as a customer they would want to help.

Screen separation isn't a known issue, there is no ID tag in the S&R systems for it.
"Known issue" doesn't actually mean what you think it means. Sure, everyone may know about it, but unless Sprint labs can verify that the issue can potentially affect all devices currently in the field, it's not flagged as "Known". When a customer comes in complaining about the bright spots or digitizer separating, I replace the screen. That's it, nothing else.

So final note, did anyone switch from the EVO 4G to the Shift? How did you like it?

THANK you. i work for sprint and pride myself on good customer service. and i HATE it when someone tells a story about a handful of idiots but assumes that is an accurate representation of an entire corporation. once again, thank you for your clear headed thinking.
