love for the xoom - Xoom General

After like ... 1 month of headaches - ordered the xoom from the US, sent to a friend, motorola botched the order, had to reorder after 1 week, then my guy had some problems and another 2 weeks delays till he actually sent it finally i managed to get my hands on my Xoom today. YEY!
I have to say i freaking love the device. It's insanely fast, and i am completely impressed by the quality build. I got accessories the headphones (those i don't like a lot - s10 hd), keyboard, standard dock, and black gel case, and i think they are all nicely done, and have a polished look.
Well it will be a while until i manage to get my hands on it actually, because my girlfriend decided to take it over and she is toying with it and won't let it go. I'm afraid the xoom is her new boyfriend
I still love my Xoom ! I can go drink in peace now, my girl won't even notice i am gone YEY!
Thanks Motorola Xoom!

I have blurry yet very fond memories of my trips to Prague so go enjoy your drinks (have a Staropramen for me)!

Why did you buy now and not wait?

I'm just curious to get some opinions on why most of you bought the Galaxy S Tab now instead of waiting for better hardware, Honeycomb or any of the other fated reasons to wait?
Also if you choose to speak up as to why, can you also include whether or not you got it with a contract?
Thanks
Okay here's my answer . I know of nothing coming down the line that is worth waiting for...
The Tab seems to play videos fine, so I have no need of a faster CPU.
The screen is nice, and since AMOLED has failed (thus far atleast) to live up to the power consumption hype, and since I'm not a fan of unnatural "glowing" colors that's not a feature I'm particularly interested in either.
New versions of Android are coming out all the time, so that's never a good reason to wait (would be waiting forever in that case). Also Samsung has said Gingerbread is coming for the Tab. What makes honeycomb more wait-worthy than whatever comes after honeycomb again? I don't miss any tablet-features on the Tab, and the reviews that keep mentioning that Froyo is not tablet-optimized strangely never really mention in what way that is the case. It seems to fit perfectly on a 7" tablet as far as I can tell.
Battery life is very good, obviously pretty much completely dominated by the screen, and I see no reason to believe that's going to improve by a huge margin in the near future.
7" is the perfect size (since it fits in my pocket both in pants and jacket). The Tab is my only phone and does that job very well for my needs. Again can't think of anything coming down the line that's particularly revolutionary here either. The Tab is the perfect form-factor for me.
So I would actually rather be inclined to ask the opposite question. What is coming soon that should have made me wait?
Edit: And yes I got it with a 1-year contract (in Norway). About the same total price as at retail (~$950), except the contract includes 100 MB data per month for free.
Time is all you have in your life, the sooner you get it, the longer you can enjoy it . If you wait, when should you get one because there always will be better one and cheaper too in your future. Also, I predict when Android is optimized for Tablet, no tablet will have phone capability even though not many people like this big of a phone.
I had a galaxy S. Liked the phone but too many problems. The fact I sold my Galaxy S and only paid an extra £40 for my Tab that doesn't have the problems that plague the Galaxy S made it all worthwhile. Plus 7" screen doesn't hurt
Cause I cant stand the Ipad and its big brother attitude.
Because I'm very impatient
I am not an apple fan although I like the idea of the ipad I could never buy an apple. The ipad was to big for my needs, where as the tab is just the right size. I love the android os even though I have only used it for a month now
My need for a tab is to play movies and music, read emails, eboooks, surf the web and txt. This tab does all of this and much more.
I had the opportunity to do some overtime, the cash from which paid for my tab sim free.
And I love it.

My reasons
Ditto all of the above.
Had a tosh folio for a week, quite nice but screen poor and toshiba forgot to mention it wasn't finished! Waited for vega for too long and from what I have seen on the modaco thread today, I am glad I didn't.
Kept playing with the tab and my one concern, the price, got sorted when it dropped to £440.
It is great and i love it(but not in a sexual way!)
If I could pay $650 for a 7" phone/video/camera/music/web/eBook reader/navigation/tether and my two kids could enjoy it (playing zoodles) with me then I would do it Plus the fact that 7" is very comfortable in my hand vs a bigger size tablet.
I have the lightest, I believe, 13" laptop (2.9lbs) and the kids still want the tablet. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Yes
I'm just a tech enthusiast and knew there was enough hype within the hacker community to expect that this thing would see some awesome howebrew ROMs and improvements in the near future. I like to mess around with my gadgets rather than settle for what features they came with. Waiting for honeycomb is no big deal for me either. This things works great as it is and cant wait until the first custom ROM gets released which I feel is just around the corner.

I got mine on Sprint. It was $400 if you signed a contract.
So far I love this thing. It's size is perfect for everything when you are at home.
I love anything tech related and I think the Tab has something really good going for it.
It was the right timing for me. I was looking into the HTC Desire HD while i was travelling in Taiwan. I found I love Android (compared to iPhone OS) when i had the HTC Desire. But i "desired" a larger screen. As well, i use the phone mainly for work. When I noticed the Tab had cellular capability, i decided to look for it instead of the Desire HD.
The 7" screen, portability, quick performance and great screen size (for my old eyes) was the payoff.
I dont have a contract as i bought it outright from a local taipei store.

This guy speaks the truth.
You never know when you are going to die (seriously). You can walk outside the door right now, get hit by a car (god forbid) and die. Lighting can hit you when you least expected. A tree can fall down on you. You can get sued by someone else. You can get framed for something you never did. You can get robed. So many things can happen when you least expect it.
So get your Galaxy Tab now before its too late.

Lets hear it for the early-adopter mantra!
And by the way, one reason Apple does so well is that there is a veritable ARMY of early-adopters who then sing the praises so that the wafflers and fence-sitters feel comfortable making a decision..or rather, having that decision made for them.
There's a certain comfort in that, and a certain amount of common sense, but if we were ruled by common sense, we'd still be banging rocks together as race.
man to me this is the best device out there right now,and this is coming from a dude that had every ihone/ipad that apple made.my last apple garbage was the iphone 4,i got tired of steve and apple telling me what i can and can't do with my device that i paid for,i was able to do more with my galaxy tab right out the box when i got did not even have to root/jailbreak it lol.i got the euro model unlock man i will never buy an other apple device ever again, and i hope some one here from sumsung is reading these comments on how not to **** with your customers on the next tab that they make.give us the full functions of the device or you will lose customers just like apple.
I'm going to be totally honest, I bought the Tab just for the hell of it. I wasn't in the market for a tablet, Ipad, Netbook or laptop I just happen to be at Best Buy and ran acrosss the Tab that they had on display. After doing that for about 2 mins I told the rep to get it for me. I also have the Evo and while I love my phone, the Tab is getting a little more love from me. Once Samsung comes out with the new Tab with better specs and the Amoled display im selling this one and get that. Until then I will continue to enjoy my purchase.

at least you have something to look forward at having at Christmas.
I got mine now because I waited long enough for it. I'm sure there will be other awesome tablets that will be cheeper with honeycomb and whatever else will come out but looking at how it is with every other device there will be a way to get those on here too.
I was sick and tired from my WM6.5 device. I had the Samsung Giorgio Armani.
I waited for a Samsung Galaxy with hardware keyboard. Then came the Galaxy Tab and I went to the shop and the moment I was using it I told the sales person I wanted to buy it. Still getting used to the Android environment but loving every moment.
Still looking for a way to get the left and right arrows on my keyboard and all would be perfect.

Considering getting one, would like opinions...

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!

XOOM as a fathers day present!

Hey all, I've been an XDA regular for quite a while now, starting with the windows mobile devices, then my Nexus One, and now I'll be a regular in here since my wife got me a XOOM for fathers day.
I'd actually been hoping for a new Galaxy Tab 10.1, and even went to Best Buy on launch day (on Friday) but had to walk away empty handed due to their pathetic launch.
I've always been concerned about the lack of a micro SD slot on the GT since a main use of my tablet will be for entertaining my kids on car rides and the movies are usually over a GB each. Having 32GB internal on the XOOM plus 32 potentially on a card is a huge advantage.
The biggest downside right now that I've found with the XOOM is the weight. It's not exactly a feather weight, and heavy usage can lead to some tired hands and arms (especially laying in bed at night holding it above you). I'm not sure the lighter weight of the tab will really make that much of a difference though.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to playing with the XOOM and since she bought it at Costco for $499 I have 3 months to play with it in case I want to take it back.
Welcome. I was never going to abandon my xoom, but one reading all the trial and error's, I rooted and modded my tablet. Now we have full sd access, usbOTG, custom roms, and much more. You will be more than happy with your xoom. Have fun
Sorry, double post
I agree with Chris, you'll love the Xoom.. I am also a WinMo vet and you sound like you know your way around a device so you will have no trouble. Android rewards the curious who like to tinker.
Just read through a few guides on using adb and rooting, then flash Tiamat's new ROM. SD card plus overclocking and smooth as glass performance. Even better, this is just the first step in all the things this device can do.
As for kids the Xoom is ideal, the video quality is great using Moboplayer free from the market and Robotek is my son's favorite game. That and a bunch of downloaded Godzilla movies on the Xoom will get us through a 14 hour plane flight next week. He is even learning about modern computers and how android works by messing about with basic app design and sideloading his masterpieces on the Xoom (after a nandroid backup of course, I am not THAT stupid)...try doing that with an iPad.

First of all grats in the XOOM. Second, all I can suggest to you is please, spontaneous use it by holding it above you when in bed. I have learned from experience that when you fall asleep while doing so, your face wont be happy with the result.
XOOM is a good choice and its not heavy at all for a Guy, maybe to ur wife and kids. Its an even better deal if you are in US because if timely updates.

Too true. My other half says it's "heavy" but it's not IMO. If the XOOM might be too heavy for dainty arms. If so, there's a Tablet for that...but it's lacking in slots / ports. Won't use 'em? Prefer looks / weight over functionality? Then the Samsung Galaxy Tab was likely made for you.

Hello All!

Well I just wanted to say Hello and Introduce myself I have been in the Android scene for a little while now With my HTC ARIA Before that I had a dual boot Win Mo and Android on my HTC Fuze. Both great phones and mad with really good quality. Tomorrow I am going to pick up a Dell Streak since Best Buy mobile only has it for $50 with new 2yr agreement. Can't pass that deal up. So I will hopefully be more frequent on this fourm like I used to back in my Fuze day. I can't wait to have that big azz phone in my hands tomorrow. It's going to be awesome!
You're going to love it.
Best phone I have ever had!

fyi, there's a dell sreak syndrom effect and currently there's no cure yet. Once you get hooked to the massive 5" screen you don't want to go back to anything smaller and currently there is no similar screen size phone in the market. You're warned !!! You'll love it and enjoy it !!!
See my signature for some Streak references.
Welcome.
Hello!!!! Welcome to the club!
well I got the Dell Streak today. I fell in love with it at first site. Most people that I showed it to gave me a "HOLY ****, That's a phone" answer. . Updated it to 2.2 and it is a lot cooler. I miss the tablet setup from the 1.6 but oh well. I will most likley root it one of these days but I am going to play with it for a couple days just to get used to it. Moving from an super small HTC aria to this huge phone will take a little getting used to but man it's so much better than any phone I have ever had!
Welcome. I just got my used Streak 5 about a week ago. It's the best phone for the money I could have ever hoped to get, particularly for what I paid used.
It has a few minor cosmetic issues, but the screen and every functional component make me glad I bought it.
I got rid of the Stage UI and switched to ADW launcher and the Ray dialer, as I found the default dialer horrendously ugly, and I'm super pleased.
You'll have a great time.
'em in luv with my streak tooo.
got my streak some cloths from here, l00king sexier.:]

i have 2 questions :
1. is outterbox commutter worth buying, right now m having skins on it from above link (m really confused on this one , as buying outter box and getting it shipped to my country india will probably make the cost to 40+ $.)
2. How bestbuy gives a 300+$ device for 5$ , is it kinda contract like at&t or something?

My XOOM - still going strong!!

Hey all. So I love my Xoom but have had to purchase another unnamed tablet with 3G capabilities so for the last few months my 2 sons (3 & 5 years old) have been using the table for games and interactive books at bedtime. Of course they love it too now, but didn't realise how easy it is to use these things. The play the games and read the books without my help "daddy go away!!". They also love clouds and sheep and send me pictures they take of the game!!
I know ppl ***** and moan about the lack of updates for devices but for a device I really enjoyed but couldn't get over how bad Honeycomb was, well it's come a long way and is standing the test of time. I don't think I'll ever get rid of this device.

You should try JB from dream chech this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997434
I rooted mine and have the latest JB on it. I can't believe I waited so long to root it!!! My Xoom is still going strong, but I noticed the battery doesn't last as long. I still get days of use out of it.
my xoom is not really doing well, ... but i will keep it untill it is really bricked XD update update and update to the latest roms!
I was a Verizon Xoom owner, then sold mine to finance the purchase of a Nexus 10. However, I am now a Verizon Xoom owner yet again. A while back, a client had bought my company a Xoom to test our web development work on because their field agents all used Xooms out in the field. Well, they upgraded to Galaxy Note 10.1s, which means they bought my company one for testing. With no use for the Xoom, my boss was nice enough to give it to me.
I have to say that, even though Google and Verizon have yet to get a Jelly Bean update out for the CDMA/LTE model, ICS runs fine on it for now. Plus, did I mention how much I missed having a tablet with a cellular connection? I have a Nexus 7 and 10, and though I love them to pieces, the only way to use them while I'm out is to kill my phone battery by enabling WiFi hotspot. The Xoom costs me $10/mo to have on my shared data pool on Verizon. I can deal with that. It's worth it to have the connectivity anywhere and everywhere. It's also nice that the Xoom is a little older now because the official accessories are dirt cheap now. I was able to pick up the OEM Motorola OTG cable (dubbed the Xoom Camera Connection Kit), standard dock, and portfolio case on eBay, all brand new, for a combined $30 bucks after shipping. That's a win.
I agree with the comment above that owning a Xoom is like owning a classic car. It's still plenty fast for everything I would do while out and about, plus the thing is built like a brick $h1thouse. If anyone ever breaks into your house, you can beat them over the head with your Xoom to knock them out, then use it to post about the incident on Twitter while you wait for the cops.
I'm glad to have the Xoom back in my arsenal, if only for the times when I'm out and about and want a cell connection without having to kill my phone battery. I only buy Nexus devices because I like the stock, unfettered Android experience and getting updates from Google. As we all know, the Xoom is functionally a Nexus in everything but its name. So...if you want a Nexus tablet with a cell connection on Verizon, the Xoom is still your only choice.
P.S. Vegas currently has the over/under on the 4.1.2/JZO54K Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Xoom at June 1 (to commemorate the one-year anniversary of its last update, the one to ICS). I'm taking the under, but only by a week or so.

Been using my Xoom every day for over a year and it's totally awesome. I've had zero problems since i bought it. I'm still using it with CM10 because CM10.1 just seems a little slower and I dont use multiple users. I'm totally happy that when I wanted to buy the Galaxy tab, it was sold out and I got the Xoom instead.
The only reason why i would consider an upgrade would be because i like higher dpi screens. In every other way the Xoom is superb.
My xoom (wi-fi only) still rocks on and is wonderful as well. It gets used every day and regularly lasts over half the week on a single charge, watching netflix for an hour or two most nights. I'm probably the freak of the bunch, running complete stock and being utterly satisfied with it. I mostly keep up with the forums here because of looking for things on my other android device (Epic 4g, i717 Note, Moment) histories and figured I might as well bookmark the Xoom too.
In any case, yay Xoom! I love my choice of tablet :]

No shame in stock, man. Check my signature. All five of my devices are bone stock. haha That Android 4.1.2/JZO54K ROM runs like a champ on the Xoom. Compared to ICS, Jelly Bean made the Xoom feel like a brand new tablet. All of us on Verizon are still waiting, but it'll show up eventually.
I feel like owning new device each time I try new ROM and its amazing xoom still gets really nice support, I've been using it for two years and its brilliant.
Best of luck to happy xoom users!

best ROM
could someone show me which ROM is the best at battery and gaming? I'm a bit confuse of it's GPU on EOS and CM10.1 Or does this belong to the hardware?
EOS Rom
I am very happy with the EOS rom:good:
Mine is still going strong, with a lag here, a lag there...
I'll solve it by flashing a Custom ROM on it since it's running official ICS...

I've also had my Xoom for a number of years, I GEDified it when 4.1.2 was first available and left in untouched until very recently. It's now rooted running dreamcwli's 4.2.2 rom which has given the device a new lease of life.
