I was thinking to myself if I were the CEO of SE the first thing that I would do is opening the bootloader and giving GB to x10. Some companies started to put bootloader follwing the SE path. Now what they are going to do.
ANDROID IS READY TO (FREE)
Also, please note that you may void the warranty of your phone if you unlock the boot loader. See your phone’s warranty statement for details. Additionally, due to the modified phone software, Sony Ericsson’s repair network may not be able to properly test and repair your phone according to our normal procedures. Consequently, if Sony Ericsson does perform a warranty repair, Sony Ericsson may charge you a handling fee for any additional incurred costs due to your modification of the software.
Therefore, you should only unlock the boot loader of your phone if you are an advanced developer with good knowledge of the technology and risks involved. We strongly recommend that standard users NOT unlock the boot loader, as it is not needed. We are proud to deliver great phone experiences through our rigorously tested and official software releases.

Thats very good news, even the x10 dont get the unlocked bootloader all this will help our devs to learn more about se and make easier to them the cracking of the bootloader
Guys, sorry to disappoint you, but there are only two possibilities:
1.) the london drug cartel spoiled the drinking water around SE headquarters with a ****load of LSD (accidently?)
2.) Some bastard hacked blogs.sonyericsson.com and spreads ****.
*sry, joking*
Seriously, who is this at SE that turns a whole company's concept upside-down?!
Very good news and the first time I suggest to buy another XPERIA phone!
edit: Did they perhaps recognize that their upcoming phones'll have a hard time around the competition due to hardware specs? I think it makes sense. Their flag ships don't look all that good (if you look at the hardware only!) and the XPERIA Play received some quite bad reviews out there. So to stand out from the crowd, they open the bootloader while every other company starts to lock it up. Only my suggestion.
****, most probably need to buy the Arc Now ;-(
I really like my x10, but more fun with open bootloader

Are you trolling? Sony Ericsson isn't suing anyone for trying to unlock the bootloader of the X10.
Are you getting the Sweden-based mobile phone company Sony Ericsson confused with the United States of America-based video game publisher Sony Computer Entertainment America?

Wow, SE has really made some wonderful decisions! This is more than what any another non-nexus android phone has done. Kinda hard to hate SE after they at 2.3.3 for the x10 and unlocked bootloader option for their next phones. They've pretty much made sure my next phone purchase will be an SE.

I personally tried prototype versions of the Arc, and you'd be surprised how smooth SE's Gingerbread is. It feels a lot more polished and complete than the stock Gingerbread.

I agree. The whole firmware lockdown of a good smartphone is purely about future sales. The PSP-phone explains everything, eg. why Flash is not supported by long delayed 2.1.
Companies shouldn't get away with treating all users like idiots. More power to the hackers..
You should be happy that the X10 isnt bugridden like the GS. It was SEs first android phone and i think they did a commendable job. I am sure they have learnt and will treat us better the next time. All said, i love my X10.

SE is acting like they are market share leaders instead of near the bottom. If someone asked me if the should get a SE phone unless it was dirt cheap I would say no.
I honestly don't know why people still complaining
First of all there is not a single help-desk that knows everything about products.
Second of all, X10i was their first Android OS, and yet if you looked at any device that used that O.S you will find a huge difference in terms of performance or stability.
And I do liked the fact they locked the bootloader ( yes I do ) because I always want to be different than others, look at all the other devices ( same menu same interface ) with a little difference in applications used.
plus if SE will skip 2.2 that means 3.0 will be released as soon as it is available in the market, in other words, SE will be the first to get it
You guys should hop over to the nexus one general section. It seems HTC has produced some horror stories too.

This thread is a waste of 30 seconds of my life.
Hello everyone
I know this thread has not important purpose.
But I just wated to ask some of the XDA members who are also working in SE development team.... what was their and their colleagues' in SE team reaction to the bootloader being bypassed...
Was there any blame naming or a solution finding tasks....
As in total was there panic or were they prepared that this day would come?
As SE is technically deprecating X10 and the other first Xperias, and they're focusing in Arc/Neo/Play, they shouldn't have a negative reaction about it, unless they're afraid that ppl is not going to buy the new Xperias just because bootloader is bypassed, but thinking in that way would be a mistake (one more...), particulary if they stated that the new phones are good and fast enough; under that point of view, a custom ROM won't be needed, so bypassing the bootloader shouldn't be necessary and there should be nothing to worry about, new Xperia owners would rather to stick with SE stock ROM.
So, I believe that the reaction from SE shouldn't be hard, they will only say something like "we encourage people to keep using stock ROM because is better, improves a lot the UXP and blah blah" or something like it.
So has the bootloader been bypassed?

Why would they be annoyed or bothered?
Every developer knows that there is no 100% security on software world. The bootloader will be solved sooner or later and they know that
What can be locked can be unlocked or in this case, bypassed
I don't understand threads like this yet. It is still in a very early stage, will probably be months at least before we can really benefit from it. By then the arc/play/neo will probably be orphaned just like the x10...
What is with other members creating threads attempting to get attention from SE for other dev's work, or representing themselves like they are embassadors for xda?
Did you even think to ask Bin4ry if he wanted their 2 cents yet? It seems to me that calling out the SE devs like this can only insult their pride leading to even deeper security measures in the future making things harder for the devs. Think about it! Don't instigate them.
On top of that, let the devs get it working even a little bit before you start advertising it, or trying to rub it in SE's face.
Total panic? It's not like we broke the launch codes for a nuclear weapon.

And no, I don't care to listen to what SE has to say bout it. If I were SE, I would not like it and from SE's perspective it makes perfect sense. So, the less people rub things like that to them , the better.

You really need to get a grip on reality. The idea that a stupid thread would have such an impact is preposterous
Although i understand why Sony is pissed at GeoHot for unlocking the PS3 (since it provides access to piracy), i can´t understand why SE would be as pissed with the X10. Unlocking the X10 doesn´t allow us to pirate software. We´re all using free software or pay for the apps, and we would still do it in the future.
Geohot discovered the keys to the PS3 (money, money, money.... ups the key got leaked... i mean, i discovered it!), but the same will not happen with the X10. Not only is the process quite different, but after what happened with the PS3, i can guarantee that the key won´t be leaked (or found by a famous hacker).
This thread doesn´t even tickle SE (nor the hundreds of threads about progress on the bootloader). What causes an insane itch on SE, is the fact that the dev's are going in the right direction. I know that the unlocking of the X10, or the Arc, Neo, etc, doesn´t cause any serious problem. I cannot say the same about Xperia Play. If this phone is developed the same way as X10, Arc, etc, piracy will be again enabled on the Play, therefore causing huge losses on the software houses.
Eitherway that´s my point of view...
Our devs are great They worked so hard at finding the key to unlock the door, and stumbled upon a way to go through the window XD

This is what I think is the main purpose behind the bulletproof bootloader. Sony wants to create and control a higher end mobile gamming platform that will be licenced to other cell phone manufactures, giving them a huge install base. The x10 was just a pawn to test the bootloader's security.
Looks like all the QQ did some good. For x10 owners at least.
http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/¸
P.S. Probably has something to do with the x10 bootloader being bypassed and the good progress devs are having with loading custom kernels.
yes i think also SE is scared about loosing conrtol about there own devices. So they want to bind us again to themselfe.
Yeah,we already know that
nope we already got 2.3..through xda dev
Meh! Again we are left high and dry.We didn't get dual touch update either and now this too.
Why can't we get both x10 and x8 ,2.3, because SE doesn't have resources. And here we have J providing gingerbread to entire xperia series with help of some devs!

They have to prioritize their team to provide 2.3 for only X10. While most work to bring CM7 to X10/X10mini/X8 has been done by only 2 devs: jerpelea and racht. Such a shame to SE.

Don't get me wrong, I love my X8. However this is the first, and last, time I shall ever buy a Sony phone. I only bought mine last December, after a big Christmas marketing push by Vodafone here in Portugal. Imagine my dismay (and disgust!) to discover, after less than a month, that Sony already considered the phone obsolete before I'd even bought it :-(
Oh well. Live and learn I suppose (but it also makes me much less likely to buy anything Sony in the future...)
Rendering my x8 obsolete after only 4 months after seeing 1 proper update (1.6 --> 2.1)... not good.
Was planning to upgrade to Xperia Play, but I no longer trust SonyEricsson and have given up all plans of buying any of their products again.
That being said, XDA makes the x8 a very decent little phone. But still the XDA devs are fighting an up-hill struggle against the lockdowns imposed by SE. Thank you XDA, screw you SonyEricsson

the real idea is to bypass bootloader so sony ericsson will update x8
Well mates, I think it's time to make some noise in SE blogs, this is not only a discrimination, this feels like your older brother was given by it's mother a bigger and better toy to play with, and we, the younger sons, can play with lego for eternity. Ah... This is a lack of respect, lack of sense, we do not only need that upgrade, we need recon. We are costumers, we spent our money buying the phones, we are SE future, our opinions and thoughts will count in next sales. We can't just be left behind, I know SE certified some firmwares recently, but, if they were thinking to upgrade us, they would have done it now at same time as X10.
Well it seems this is a way too give further security to bootloader, and remove kexec exploit. There's no downgrading after this. It's a terrible choice (my thought). So, we (x8,x10mini/pro owners) don't really need this upgrade since we have J & racht & so many great developers contributing, and I have so much to thank them for the hard work, precious time they take to do it, and for sharing it with XDA community, well I can say, with all users around the world. We are very near to reach total freedom.

Hi all devs,
Thanks again for all the great replies and feedback!
First I want to mention that Xperia mini and Xperia mini pro will support unlock of bootloader under the same cercumstanses as communicated for the other Xperia 2011 products, i.e. not all phones will support unlocking of the boot loader, as it is based on customer customization.
I see quite a few questions in regards to the X10, I’m sorry if below is not the answer you were waiting for. Below is a summary of my answer in another thread.
Q: Why can’t you unlock the boot loader for X10?
The boot loader is not updated in the Gingerbread upgrade due technical reasons and the risks involved. For example, if the boot loader was to be updated with the Gingerbread upgrade and the upgrade fails for some reason, it would mean that the phone is bricked. So in general we never upgrade the boot loader when we upgrade phones in the market.
Some operators have SIM-locked phones, meaning that these phones can only be used with SIM-cards from the specific operator. This is a common business agreement in the phone industry. The reason for this is that many operators subsidies phones that are bought with a subscription.
In difference to 2011 Xperia™ products when Xperia™ X10 was produced the devices were not populated with info about if they may have an unlocked boot loader or not. This means there is no way for a boot loader to find out if boot loader unlock is allowed. A boot loader with unlock functionality would unlock all Xperia™ X10s. But we cannot do that since we have agreement with several operators regarding what software is in the devices.
Explaining what we mean by “secure way”; when the boot loader is unlocked the phone is wiped. This means that DRM certificates and sensitive keys are deleted along with the user data partition (containing downloaded apps and games, all user data like phonebook, sms etc – very similar to a factory reset).
Hope to continue the dialogue with devs! Tomorrow I, and people from the SE Developer Program, will be at GoogleIO, please come and meet at the Sony Ericsson booth!
Regards,
/Karl-Johan

He says it's similar to a "factory reset" something some people have already done several times.
I find it odd that they aren't bound by the same agreements with the mini's as they are with the X10. Plus the talk about accidentally bricking the X10 is pretty funny because people who buy high-end android devices are usually more accustomed to tinkering with their devices than the ones who buy the cheap low-end ones. Hardcore vs. casual.
Edit-
Omega beat me to it. I should read better, not just scim through.

This all just supports the SE wants to sell more phones BS.
Or maybe they are scared about what we may find.
If it's just a factory reset then
i am a few seconds away from a complete rage fit.
There's a simple work around for this..
Let us choose to unlock or not..

This is going to turn to be like your other thread OmegaRed.
Our X10 is capable of matching the new generation of xperia in performance.
They know it and they want to limit it.
The company will be screwed if everyone decides to buy used x10s instead of their new product lines.
I already see heavy advertising of Xperia play from Rogers.
Exactly!!
There has been alot of different stories from SE.
All of it looks like lies to me.
Cuz so far they keep changing the story.
I'm getting pissed of now.
But i can't deal with this closed source nightmare.
They may have unlocked future models.
but this story makes them look even worse.
Pretty amazing in my opinion, Sony Ericsson has really stepped up their game with their newer line up of phones and different commitments. Read this:

Ahhhhh... um.. i feel like a idiot.
I forgot they released the new mini & minipro phones.

I disagree. Sony have confirmed they will not be using Android on there devices in the future.
SondreVAIO... Stop posting 1001 threads about the same damn thing. You've done this multiple times with multiple topics.
source? they will be using around and windows mobile and said that while unlikely they may persue buying palm OS from HP.
however this deal does not go through until early 2012 so expect business as usual.
my source...my uncle who works for S.E in sweden
I think I am going to get a Samsung next time I get a new smartphone, If Sony confirmed there not using Android.
I don't know if I'm gonna like this unless it means more big budget titles come to the Xperia PLAY.
Sony's got a long streak going for dip**** decisions, poor marketing and absolutely dreadful ad campaigns. SE's Kristen Schaal ads for the Xperia PLAY were easily better than any of that garbage Sony tried to market the PS3 with.
who needs sony we have our own comunity here we will build our own ultimate rom if sony leave us in a pit.

Source for this? I know the Vita won't use Android, but it would make sense for them to do it for cellular and tablet devices...

Unless you have an r800x then, like me sadly, you need sony to release some kernel sources for your device, which may never happen, so in some way I agree with you because Im sure a dev in this community will figure the lil ol' r800x out sooner or later
If sony drops android though I will more then likely go back to Droid line up , Im seeing Droid 4 on Lte kinda tempting
But at the same time Im enjoying the challenge of my r800x, it will be defeated!

I second that. I'm a bit worried too. Indeed Sony has a history of making very very bad decisions by trying to go their own way and fail.

well....your gonna have to show a link for that, SE mentioned a while ago that 80% of there revenue came from their android phones, why would they jump ship now?
in fact i got a quaot for you from engadget:
"Update: Sony president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer has just addressed the media on the proposed buyout and confirmed that the company will indeed move away from feature phones, as previously stated. This effectively heralds the death of the Walkman line and the dawn of Sony's exclusively Android era, though Stringer's not ruling out the possibility of bringing another OS on board. When asked whether his firm would consider buying webOS, the exec said simply, "Never say never."

what? are you spreading bad information on purpose or something?
Engadget pretty much says the exact opposite of what your claiming, sony are ditching feature phones and are going 100% into android
