Motorola Investigates Atrix Voice Problems - Atrix 4G General

Anyone with this problem?
http://www.pcworld.com/article/223254/motorola_investigates_atrix_voice_problems.html
https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/45510?start=0&tstart=0

I noticed it on the very 1st call I made. I called a coworkers desk phone and he immediately said he could barely hear me. We swapped phones and I could hardly believe it.
I did notice one of the forum posts mentioned a new SIM card. My phone shipped with one, but I am using my old one. I guess I'll try putting it in the phone. Will there be any issues caused by putting the new SIM in?

I read a post where someone stated that turning off the noise cancelling helped out a ton.

Settings > Call Settings > Noise suppression. I'm guessin that's what he/she is talking about.

Did not help my phone. Thankfully the overall consensus is that it's a software issue...
Waiting for an update.
In contrast the Atrix' back speaker performs better than my Vaio's one...
(PowerAmp helps)

Jumped ship

I'm sorry guys I jumped ship. I wanted to like my atrix so much! Literally the only problem I had, seriously the only problem was the people couldn't understand me when I talked to them. It was a great phone but I'm starting to like my phone more.

So you went to the inspire?
Im thinking of leaving the inspire for the atrix

Well I would assume working on your speaking or getting a less defective Atrix would work just as well. Not like anyone else has a probably with the voice quality...
I had the same problem. I turned off the noise cancellation feature and that fixed it. The noise cancellation feature sounds like it has a gate with a threshold that's too high so it cuts off the beginning and end of words.

Yea I got the inspire sorry for not being specific. Well I talked to the guy at best buy and he looked at me like I just wanted a new phone. But I'm pretty sure I know how to hold a phone and even when my phone was two inches away from my mouth when I was on speaker and people are still complaining I don't think that it's the position I'm holding it. It's not user error and now all of the sudden after I got the inspire people have been commenting on how they can hear me for the first time since I got my atrix. They didn't know I got a new phone. I'm not trying to say the atrix was a bad device it just didn't suit my needs as well as I liked. And I didn't know how I was going to be able to prove that my atrix had bad call quality to the best buy guy since it's a qualitative example.

you probably coulda called him and walked across the store to show that your mic was bad, nobody has any problems understanding me whatsoever.
I've had complaints on my phone as well... they say it sounds muffled basically. I'll see if things get better with noise cancellation off. That's one of the few complaints I've had about the phone actually. I never really had much concern over call quality, but it's been mentioned enough times that I think it's a reasonable issue.

If you didn't think you could convince the BB guy with a phone call and then you state that the Atrix didn't suit your needs, it tells me that you really did just want a new phone. If you didn't like the device just be honest about it. If you liked the device you would have exchanged it for a different Atrix as defective.
My phone sounded muffled on the first day of owning it. Now I have no complaints, not sure if it was a setting or what.
I had the same issues with speakerphone, but after I turned off noise cancellation everything was better.

Actually a lot of people have issues with the voice quality. I've gone through 3 atrixes and still have the same issue, even the employees at the ATT store notice it. Motorola said they were working on it and some people have had some luck exchanging the phone, others have not been so lucky. The issue is only with the mic in the phone, if you use bluetooth then voice quality is crystal clear.
Bell atrix here..

[Q] Person on call does not hear me when I first answer the call

When I answer a call, the person on the other line does not hear me if I speak as soon as I answer the call. Is any one else having this? I have to call someone, wait till they pick up, say hello, hello. They catch the second hello every time. I can't help but think this is not normal.

I've had that happen a few times.
This happens to me every time. My last two Android devices didn't do this.
Same here, but it happened on other phones I've had, so I'm guessing it's more of at&it's issue for me.

Happens to me too? Are you using a bumper?
According to my fiancé when I have the bumper on she misses my first hello when I answer. Naked N4; hears me just fine.

I'm having the same issue as well and I am using a bumper. Maybe I'll try without it. Thanks. I wonder if the op is using a bumper as well.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I am not using a bumper. Currently using an s line case. I do not think its the case as I do not change the level of my voice, just say hello twice and they always hear me on the second hello. I too have never had this issue with any of my other phones. But if others are having the same issue I will not try for a replacement. Just trying to see what everyone else has to say. I will start a poll to see if its just AT&T or T-Mobile as well.
is this infamous "hello hello" bug from Samsung Galaxy S?

I have this issue and my phone is naked as a baby.
I'm having the same issue. First discovered problem yesterday when leaving messages for people and them complaining they couldnt understand my message.
Did an extended call test with my GF this morning at the house. I called her using my phone and she called me using my phone so we could both experience both ends of the call. The best way I can describe it is it sounds like a speakerphone conversation. The voice from nexus is muted unless speaking, and the unmute doesnt happen as soon as they speak but rather a moment after they begin speaking. I'm on TMobile.
same issue with me. Maybe is related to the buzz noize from the speaker during the call.

My speaker buzzes even when it's not in a call. If I just put the phone to my ear I can hear a small crackle...
To the OP: That seems weird. I wouldn't know about that for myself just yet, being that I haven't activated mine on any network. I'll be doing that when I get into work today. I still have a T-Mobile sim card there. Can't wait to test out the call quality and what not.

Yeah I have had it as well, I didn't think too much of it since I had the same problems on the iphone. It's pretty much a habit for me to wait a second and then say hello.

I noticed from a post in a similar thread that there was mention of a recent commit to CM, so I have a feeling that if that gets pushed in there sometime it'll most likely be fixed in the other ROMS in the time to come. Don't think there's anything you can do to fix it yourself- unless you're a developer.
I have the same problem. But I really don't care. People can wait
the latest cm10.1 nightlies supposedly have fixed this. I don't get a lot of calls so I haven't really checked.

Call problems

I have talked to 2 other g2 owners, both on Verizon, and they have the same problem. While on a call randomly the other person can barely hear me, it doesn't happen every call but enough to be considered a problem. Anyone else experience this and what carrier. I tweeted @lgusamobile to no avail. I am on my 2nd g2 and it still does it.

I'm beginning to wonder if it has something to do with Verizon changing the mic holes from 3 to 1?
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Just started using my G2 today. Made a couple of calls and had no issues until this evening. Two calls in a row and the person I was talking to could barely hear me. So I put it on speakerphone and he could hear me just fine. I sure don't want to have to keep doing that. I'm on T-Mobile.

Exactly what I started experiencing abotu 2 days ago. When I hold the phone with my chin (slightly slant) they cant hear me but when I hold it with my hand facing my mouth they can clearly hear me. its weird, what gives?
Ive noticed the same problem as well. I figured out last night that if I hold the phone higher on my face, so the ear speaker is a tad above my ear, people on the other end say I sound way better.
Sounds like LG has some call quality issues it needs to hammer out on these phones with software updates.
ok, add me to the list for call quality/clarity issues; i'm using an att stock, but rooted ROM. people i've talked to on my phone say i sound muffled, like my hand is covering my mouth. they can't understand what i'm saying. . called at&t - from my phone - to report the problem and the tech support person confirmed my issue. they're sending a replacement device overnight. i hope the new device does not have the same issues .
Yep, I'm also on T-Mobile AMD having the same issue

sad to report that the replacement device i received today exhibited the same issues. chit! i'm really disappointed that the problem was still present. i was (supposedly) talking with a manager/tech who asked me to call him from my other phones (S4/HTC One) to see if he could hear the difference. to my disappointment, he said he could clearly tell how muffled i sounded on both of my G2s. another phone is on the way for me to test. fingers are crossed that the 3rd device will work.
I had this problem when my gf called me. She said i sounded very low and that i sounded as thou i was sick. That was the second day i got the phone. since i don't really use it for calls that much its not a worry. plus i past my days of return.

So if I'm correct the mic in G2 has strait direction and does not hear and amplify sounds going from other directions except nearby mouth voice. So I suppose people should fire voice recorder and tinker with recording self muffling some chatting and keeping mic in different directions. Then listen to what other part probably hear. Probably someone would find the best position for mic to record voice. Me thinks that it's a distinctive mic's feature &specificity so software update would never come being not needed in the first place

So then its not mic-related. Were you holding phone above a shoulder like when talking or display in front of face? or either way it records same?
If it's not mic than it's something AMR related. Probly on bad line and signal phone chooses AMR-NB instead of AMR-WB, does it?
well... received a 2nd new phone, spent another 45 minutes on the phone with another tech, testing the G2 and a HTC One only to have the same results: muffled voice on the G2. i have never, ever, ever had this kind of issue with Android device. i was given a case number (what ever that means) told to expect a call from another tech person and, that it's possible at&t might ship my phone back to LG. WTF!! apologies for my rant, just very disappointed. think i'm going to buy the T-Mobile version, unlock it and test on at&t.

Just got the Nexus 6p...Lag Problem?

So i am going to do more testing on this but i just got the Nexus 6p and i use Google Music ALOT! But when i am using it and turn the phone and it rotates...There is a slight lag with the phone and music. This is right out of the box with the most recent OS update and all updates from the app store. No other apps installed other than the stock apps.
Just wanted to see if this is normal with the phone or a problem. I want to stick with this phone but can not live with t his lag problem at all.
Let me know
Thanks!
I'm not too sure about the phone lag you're talking about, but the music lag when you rotate is because of the speaker channels being swapped; when you hold it portrait, the left channel is played on the top speaker, and the right on the bottom. When you rotate is so the top speaker is now on the right side, the phone will rearrange the channels so the music is now correctly playing on the right channels (right on right, left on left), which is why you hear small gap in the music while rotating.

Why is there always someone like you here? If someone has an issue with your beloved phone, this is how you act? The guy is personally having an issue, it doesn't mean the phone sucks. Give him a break while he tries to fix his issue.
As to the OP, it's probably what has already been said and the slight delay are the speakers switching orientation.

My point is you attacked him, telling him he didn't read the OP, and that he has reading comprehension issues, but he was never talking to the OP, he was talking to the person who said he was experiencing general lag when he first responded to this thread, which is when you first engaged him. That's why he told you to check who he quoted. Your entire argument with him here is based on your incorrect assertion that he was taking to the OP. For the record, I don't agree with him at all, every phone has lag at some point, including this one, whether people want to admit it or not.

I appreciate you clarifying. Yes, that;s exactly what happened. It's actually a pretty silly argument. I was merely commenting on a drive by post about a "general" lag with no details. I think that is the person that should have to at least explain themselves and not simply post a drive by.
For the record, I've only had the 6P for about 2 months now, but I have NO lag whatsoever and have a LOT of apps installed. Each to his own I guess.

Stuck the SIM card tool in the wrong hole (**sigh**)

Let's get all the "that's what she said" jokes on the table and ready to go...
I switched my Essential phone from Verizon to Sprint and upon taking out the SIM card, I stuck the ejector tool in the microphone hole, which is literally RIGHT next to the SIM card tray. There is a post on reddit about this happening on the Galaxy S8 and the consensus is that it isn't a big deal. Well, I felt a definite click and then it went in even further after that supposed click. Crap. Also on the iFixit teardown, they mention this and what a poor design choice it was. So, anyone done this yet?
I can't notice any ill effects just yet. Voice still sounds clear on the other end and the microphone appears to be functional. I emailed Essential and asked about this, and they told me I may experience poor call quality on the other end and I may be unable to use voice search. To me, this = broken microphone. I asked a few more times if this would be a costly repair and if the microphone can actually be damaged, but they just told me to "monitor it going forward." Not very helpful. It seems to be working fine, but something definitely happened where I felt a click and then it went in further. So I wonder what the heck happened? Anyone else done this yet? Let this be a warning to those who are quick to stick the SIM card tool in the first place it fits
-Collin-
Does seem like odd placement, but is it just me or is it pretty intuitive that the Sim card hole is the one that's inside the Sim tray and not the one outside?
My guess is you pierced a piece of fabric that was acting as a guard from dust and to reduce harsh frequencies.

Maybe you're right. The microphone appears to work fine, but it still bothers me to know that something may have happened. I'll continue to "monitor" as Essential suggested.

I think they designed it that way for the sake of symmetry lol

Wouldn't surprise me!
Pay attention. All sim holes are inside of the Sim tray. I've never seen a single tray where the ejection hole is not built into the tray.
It has to be there because it can't be close to the speaker.
Couldn't put it up top because of the magnets, may interfere with the sim

I just did the EXACT same thing. I heard two click/pop sounds pushing tool in. Now I hear high pitch noise on the other end of a phone call.. I was done listing the phone for sale also, and was taking the SIM card out because I was placing the phone to the side
Waiting to hear back from Essential to see if they can help with replacement mic...
Worst part is, I remember reading this thread when I first was interested in purchasing the phone and though, "no way I would do that".
UPDATE: I'm still an idiot. The phone appears to be fine. It happened to be my girlfriends pixel 2 with a high pitch noise in the earpiece (to be addressed in software update says duder googler support)
I did the same. I'm. An idiot. Nothing bad seems to. Have happened though...
Ditto, did this too and have not noticed any adverse affects. Even heard the "pop" noise.
Lol I did the same thing but I did it at Best buy when I was returning the phone. Lesson learned and got a replacement anyways.

Lol I too heard the pop noise
I also did this, and felt like a tool. No issue with that phone since doing it though.
God damn, just did the same thing to my brand new PH-1. Should I return it?

There have been multiple posts on Reddit about this. Someone reached out to an Essential team member who basically said they suspected users may do this and designed the mic at an angle so nothing could be stuck down to damage it. Doesn't even affect the IP rating apparently.
They are very responsive to customer emails if you'd like personal confirmation.
I also did this yesterday right when I got the phone before I even powered it up or took a second look I put the simtool in the wrong hole... My heart stopped after the pop sound and after I realized what I just did... However I have made plenty of calls and ask everyone how I sound and no complaints. So I assume it's no big deal still really sucks I didn't spend that extra second to see where I was sticking it...
On a side note this phone is amazing and I must have bad eyes because every photo I take is flawless. Not sure what is up with all the bad hype of the subpar camera. I have no issues with it!
LoL. just did it too. made me upset at first , then I got angry with essential for poor design....
now I'm overwhelmed by how many people this happened to
Yeah, add me to the list.. jeez, wish I had read this post FIRST.
When I got the phone at Best buy the lady wouldn't let me help her with it... She said people had been sticking it in the wrong hole and damaging the phone. I thought to myself ? Wrong hole? Of course after thinking, thats what she said lol.. if not for her forward thinking I may have done the same thing and potentially caused some unwarranted pain.. pun intended
I've emailed them about this...

Hi There,
Thank you for contacting us.
We have had a few people inquire about this, and thankfully our developers also thought the location may be an issue. Our development team created a specific shaped canal for the microphone hole. This prevents the mic from being damaged by any foreign object that may be put in the incorrect spot. It would not be possible for the mic itself to be damaged from the SIM tool, but the canal itself may have been.
If for whatever reason an issue with the microphone arises, we would recommend you go back to Sprint. They will be able to provide you with the best steps to move forward.
I appreciate your time, and hope you have a great day!
Sincerely,
Sarah
Essential Customer Experience Team"
It's not funny...but I feel much better now since I'm not the only one who did that. I keep blaming myself for not being careful enough!!
Merry Christmas and good luck to all!!
