Is there an app to enable / disable 4G based on GPS? - EVO 4G General

I've been thinking about this for months and I searched through the forums. I can't find an application that uses GPS data to enable or disable the WiMAX radio automatically. Since 4G is really not that widespread, even in a big city like Austin, it would sure make sense to save on battery while enjoying faster speeds when available. If you just leave 4G on, battery life is destroyed.
I was thinking it could be some sort of widget based solution. 4G off/on/auto. When in auto mode, it's pairing 4G availabily (signal too) with location information. This data could be stored locally or stored remotely (anonymously) to better the community.
I am honestly confused that Sprint doesn't have something like this already integrated to save the battery. Why can't the tower just alert the phone that it has 4G hardware present? That would be pretty sweet as well.
Another idea could be to use Sprint's 4G coverage map along with user-sourced data.
I would pay good money for something like that.

Havr you tried juice defender? Im not sure about 4g data, but i know it can do wifi based on location. I dont live in a 4g area, so ive never tried testing it. Pm me, or gtalk me and ill give ya any guidance and help i can.

Locale. Its expencive, and takes a small amount of a month to learn how to use, but with it; you are able to control everything and automate anything on your phone based off of location, time, and condition. Pretty nifty if you take the time to configure the thing!

I didn't think about locale. You are right though, after you learn the software it is amazing. I haven't really needed the automation recently, so it slipped my mind. Great software for your purpose.

What sort of resource demand (battery drain) is there from Locale?

+1 for Local.
Battery use is minimal. It sleeps for up to ten minutes, wakes up, checks your situations and then goes back to sleep.

so you can give it detailed map data of the entire U.S. WiMax coverage and have it automatically enable the radio when in range?

sounds like you want the Sensorly app to integrate with the Tasker app. I swear by Tasker, but as of yet, it doesn't seem to want to toggle the CM7 WiMax.

Gps

Why do people need gps on their phones? this is a serious question
I have never needed or used gps in my life
I like using maps better I guess
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
My biggest uses:
Find restaurants/activities near me to try new things (or in a new location)
Geo-caching - fun way to hike
Navigation - maps are dangerous and slow to use in a car, annoying to carry, and out of date depending on your source. Phones aren't the best for this but Android's Navigation is basically the cream of the crop.
Um if you dont know what good a gps is you really need to get into the tech. age.
I use it for EVERYTHING.
The real key is that I use google maps to look up anyone or anything around me. My friends all use latitude on weekend nights so we can find each other. If my gps doesn't show where I am how are friends supposed to find me?
I use it for pizza on a random night... or out on the boat when I'm going to a restaurant on the water.....or on a Friday afternoon when traffic is horrible and I want an alternate route.
There's plenty of reasons why the GPS NEEDS TO ACTUALLY WORK on this phone.
Well I'm not making an excuse for the gps problems I just have never needed gps is all
barely any of my friends have an android phone
Still stuck on blackberry and feature phones

I use GPS to navigate around unfamiliar locations. I cannot memorize the entirety of the planet's geography so I must rely on tools to bridge this particular shortcoming and I cannot safely read a map while driving.
What the hell did you expect?
Just hoping for something I could use

Gosh. Where to start: Geocaching; geotagging photos ("the accident|family snapshot|scenery is right here"); tracking athletic runs (Cardio Trainer, etc); self-geocoding of addresses to avoid intellectual property issues with online geocoding sources; geocoding any physical object surveyed for a multitude of GIS applications and databases; "I am here" apps for emergency use; wardriving; geo-based social networking; geo-based shopping (Barcoder, Shop Savvy, etc.); calibrating speedometer and odometer; orienteering; mapping trails; tracking hikes and bike rides; of course, real-time vehicular navigation; recording and analyzing delivery routes ...
The list is really open-ended, and is expanding as democratized GIS, mapping, and GPS functionalities expand.
The integration of GPS with other technologies on the "phone" -- really a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls and is enhanced by cell-based GPS hybrid location and thus orders of magnitude more useful than a dedicated GPS receiver-- is what provides the power. I can be driving down the highway at lunch, speak "Taco Bell" into my phone, and it will find the closest choices with directions on a dynamic map.
This is why an accurate and functioning GPS is integral to Android smartphones. It enables things you didn't even conceive of, and services still being invented.
Geographically-based "to do" items, so the phone alerts you when you're getting off the freeway and reminds you to stop at the grocery store to buy toilet paper and cat food on the way home from work.
Location-aware ringer preferences. At the office, it turns down the ringer volume so half the floor doesn't hear the theme from The Great Giana Sisters (starting at 2:18) performed by Machinae Supremacy whenever somebody calls

Well then you need to expand your horizions Sometimes it's fun to go get lost and then of course have a nice gps to bring you home.
I use sprint nav when me and my friends get lost on a random night in the car or when we're driving with no where to go, I'll use sprint nav to get us to some random restaurant in another state or something.
I also use google maps to find trainstations nearby when I'm in some random part of the city. And when I went to my friends college 7 hours away, thebus had to make a random stop and I used it to figure out where I was.
Its also entertaining to ride a train and see a little blue arrow scrolling across the screen following your path with a Speedometer.
If you have intimateknowledge ofplaces bfore hand, then you have no reason for a gps considering you clearly don't care about the tecnology. This gps bug effects quite a few people adversely. I for one didn't realize how much I used gps until I upgraded from my hero

Improve 4g signal

I've ben reading through many posts and can't find anything on improving my 4g signal. Is there any way to improve my signal. I was the manager for an indirect dealer a couple of months back. When I was at the store I would get full bars all the time. At home I only get one bar on a good day. There is also one window that I can stand by and get 2 bars.

Are you using your phone for your home Internet connection? If so, I can understand your being upset about not getting 4g in your home, but outside of that, why would you care? I get 10mbps a quarter mile away from my home, but not at all in my home. But I don't care, because in my home I'm using wifi anyways.
If you are relying on it as your Internet connection, you might want to look at Avas rom, as it has some 4g tweaks. Good luck!
I am sharing my internet at home with several computers and 4g would make a huge difference. I was hopping not to have to root to improve my signal. Thanks for pointing that out I'll look into it.

well there is a way to improve 4G by tweaking the radio but you need your MSL in order to modify those settings. I remember pulling them from here in the EVO development forums

search for msl reader in marketplace (it's free). then use "search" to find the two threads on making 4G connect faster (idk the direct links off-hand, sorry)

MSL reader requires root access. You're going to have to call Sprint to learn your MSL.
But the threads about 4G don't really improve signal strength. They just allow you to hold it for longer.
There's not much you can do to increase 4g strength as far as I'm aware.

If it's the indirect dealer i'm thinking of(the same shack i bought my evo's from) some of them were putting up 4G repeaters which could account for your increased signal while at work.

Battery life seems imoroved as well....but i am using "powersave" governor and underclock (MIN368/MAX1068)....lasts 25% longer
I'm kinda new to all this so i might be wrong. I've been having this same issue before i even rooted my phone. I'm using cm7 rc 4 right now and having the same in and out of 3g/4g problem. When i was on stock i called tmobile's android department to complain about this cuz when the 3g and h kept going in and out i couldn't use internet at all. They told me to switch to 3g only for awhile instead of keeping the data setting at auto. I'm still looking for a solution to this cuz right now on 4g my speed is less than 2mbps. i have the speed test to prove. cm7 doesn't have an option to set to 3g only! so i'm pretty much f*ed unless someone has a solution. P.S. i'm not throttled ive use 1.5 gb this month.

cm7 does have 3G only option....
You must add the status bar widget to access it
are u sure cm7 rc4 has access to it? or are you talking about a different build? And I don't understand what you mean by status bar widget. Are you talking about the power control widget that comes with cm7?
Yeah..i mean notification power widget
Menu >> settings >> cyanogenmod settings >> interface >> notification power widget >> widget buttons >>toggle 2g/3g
After adding this you must scroll down to "network modes" and select one of the "3G only" modes

4g on CM7 vs Sense?

Hey guys,
I was hoping I could tap your brains for some EVO knowledge. I've been rocking CM7 for awhile now and love it. The only "problem" seems to be how it handles the 4g connection. It seems like it will either use 4g OR 3g and if I turn on 4g but there is no coverage (or it drops out) it does not immediately default to 3g. I know on Sense roms that when 4g stopped, 3g kicked in. Has anybody else seen this?
I find 4G on CM7 more unstable than on sense when I use it. It's hard to keep a connection and seems to take longer to connect. One of the reasons I recently switched back to a sense rom.

I've actually experienced the opposite.
I could barely use 4G on any Sense ROM. It would spike my CPU at 100% (even after full wipes), it would disconnect and take forever to reconnect.
Since moving to CM7, 4G connections really quick and usually stays established with no problems.

That's going to be in 7.1.
I've found WiMax on CM7 to be about the same as on Sense, which is to say it's flaky on both. I don't think it's really the phone or the ROM's fault. Sprint/Clear just hasn't built a strong enough 4G network to provide a good experience. Any time it constantly has to switch back and forth (which is going to be the case with the high frequencies they're running at and insufficient power or tower density to compensate), the experience won't be very satisfying.

I was using cm7 for a little bit...4g in chicago was slowwww to connect if it did at all...i just switched to virus's gingersense b3 and it is awesome...waiting on his kingdome port with sense 3.0 sometime tonight
i think it's pretty expected that two unpaid coders won't make as good of a code than a multi-billion/million/lotta$$$ corp can. amazing work either way though. that said, try one of the cm7.1 nightlys (any #60+ nightly, not counting stable 7.0.3, that's still 2.3.3) as the new android 2.3.4 has google's own 4g wimax coding in it.
Waiting to download the Kingdom ROM from XxXViRuSXxX. Apparently 4g works great and it has the new Sense 3.0, which is beautiful! It won't be bug free but I plan on jumping in and helping out and soon it will be a daily driver
What is cm7?

Compatible portable wifi booster

My thorough search for a compatible wifi booster has left me empty handed, and with a headache.
I am a paramedic, and am usually never sitting still, but when I do I would rather not have to park my rig on the router to get a signal.
Everybody knows the wifi signal is weak on our A500, is there a compatible antenna or booster that would allow me to get a decent wifi signal? Little side note, it would need to be portable, and slightly compact.
Thanks in advance

In a word, nope.
Of course I don't know everything and am quite unqualified at a lot of this kind of stuff. So your solution may still be out there.
That said. If you find a better solution. I am certain that there are many of us that look forward to hearing about it. So don't forget to share.
Working solution..
Here at our home we have over 1acre lot.. its very deep and not so wide . but we have a Gazebo type structure about 400 feet past our back deck. our router is in the basement its a a average price netgear.. I bought a netgear router . that can be set in repeater mode.. this router we have will find all wifi signals and boost them.. I have used it on Construction sites as well. in a similar fashion from my work van to boost the 3g from our work computers in there...
So get a cheap router i think they are like 40.00 for the netgear one. make sure it says on the box with Repeater mode. i think is how its worded.. it will pick up open networks with a bit of setup.. you can find all of that on there website..
back when i was in the pc repair business NETWORKING WAS My big thing..
Good Luck..
Thanks er, but I'm looking for a portable solution, like maybe a plug n play antenna or something, I'm rarely at home, mostly mobile.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
my router i use for a repeater.. is pluged in the garage.. .. The one in my work van plugs into a invert-er.. its very small.. i think 1x4x6 to 8 inches.. they draw very little voltage..
But yes i do understand what your looking for.. I have looked for something similar for gps.. as you with wifi no real solution..
Good Luck...
This is a shot in the dark, but, .....
I see you are on T-Mobile? Happen to have an WP7 or rooted android phone?
Go the tether route, it really is your best and only solution.
Many, many options at that point, from paying for a tether plan to *ahem* 'circumventing payment'....
- for instance -
I have an HD7, the last update HTC gave out included 'internet sharing' - basicly a mobile hotspot when turned on - and I have not paid for, nor have been charged for a tether plan *seems I got lucky*
As far as android is concerned, there are some apps that will do tethering for you, and sets the data through a proxy, as to lessen alerting the phone co. as to whats *really* going on.
Good luck to you!
I do have a rooted android, the ability to tether and as well as a wireless hotspot. I use that when I can, other areas where tmo service isn't that great is what I find wifi for, and when I get capped lol.
Just trying to find an alternative to siting store front or on their router. An antenna is all I need lol.
