Temp rooted with Z4root
I am following the More detailed perm root instructions by BrandoKC until i get to step 4. I have tried to verify both files but it says "md5sum: not found". I put the files in both the SHIFT folder and in the root sdcard folder. I even tried to verify the files on the sdcard root but i get the same message. It did work when I thought I was temp-rooted with visionary, but now with actual root I cant access the sdcard. Any suggestions? Thanks - Viperspike
sorry. noob here. found Busybox...on the way to perm root now

okay. you need a total of three file. in the folder.
Do this,
1) use the Astro manager and go to /mnt/sdcard and create a folder. And name that folder "root" (all lower case). Or you can create a folder via a mounting the SDcard and using a computer.
2) Then download This File.
3) Once you download that extract the file. In that file are three scripts.
4) Move those three scripts to the folder that folder you created in step one.
5) then try your command again.
The reason it's not finding /sdcard/root is because it's simply not there. It cannot find what doesn't exist.
Also make sure its CD / not cd/
hello! i am hoping someone can figure out what i am doing wrong. I am completely new to rooting phones.read lots about it but this is my first attempt.i have had help from a friend that has rooted several phones (including his mt4g) Now i just got this phone yesterday so its new with only the required apps for rooting on it.
both my friend and i have tried several times this method:
6. Run visionary to gain temp root.
7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type “su”, and hit enter to gain root privileges.
8. Type “cd /data/local” and hit enter.
9. Now type “chmod 777 gfree” and hit enter to make the program executable.
10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.
11. Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot to see if S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked
then hit a brick wall with this step '10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.' we get a permission denied error.
i have also tried this method several times:
5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator
6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button
7. it should say S=OFF
but after the reboot in step 6 it is still s-on
hboot-0.86.0000
hoping someone can help
oh and i followed the steps to a T, thanks for any info
So you are able to temproot? Does typing "su" in terminal emulator give you superuser privileges (if the prompt symbol changes to a # instead of a $, it worked)?
If so, make sure you've downloaded the gfree files and copied them to the proper place. You want the files themselves to be in /data/local on the phone. You do NOT want a folder named "gfree" containing these files. The commands should work exactly as written.
I'm the one that was helping the op. Does the gfree folder need to be renamed or does the files need to be moved out of the folder and placed in /data/local directly? I rooted with the above method in like 5 minutes but when I tried with the op we got ./gfree permission denied as stated above. Thanks for your help it's much appreciated and we'll post back with results.
that worked perfectly!! had to take the files out of the gfree and put them directly in local and rename the gfree folder something else. Thanks!
okay we got it figured out and s-off. For those wondering if you manually add the files through root explorer copy the files in the gfree folder and drag them to /data/local and paste. Do not put the gfree folder in /data/local. Thanks again jdkoren for the help!
would it work if you just put the files on your sd card instead? Also its a brand new mytouch 4g correct? Meaning bought in 2011? I just bought one and the unlockr method didnt work. Im going to try the method you guys did next and i saw a video in which the guy did the same thing (gfree version) but just changed data local to sdcard. Im just wondering because im about to root soon. Thanks.
Yes it was bought in 2011. Use the guide found here briefmobile just make sure to use root explorer and copy all the files inside the gfree folder and paste them to /data/local.
i tried the search and google but find nothing on this. Im not new to rooting, i rooted my OG droid, but now im trying to root my Mt4g and having trouble. I have the .86 boot loader and im trying to do the gfree method of rooting. Only problem is when i go to transfer my gfree files to data/local, i cant find data local. Im using astro file manager and i hit the up button to get as far as i can go. Once i do that i select the data folder, and it just says empty directory. so i can find /data, but not /data local. Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
Astro file manager will not show the /data/local folder. If you don't have root you have to push gfree using adb.
i'm on a 4g slide with this same problem, i need to move a file to the /data/local, and my file managers cannot find 'local', and do not let me create one.
i am already rooted.

you need to use a root explorer.
or use the line command
Code:
adb push <file_name> /data/local
Another thing you could do is download visionary, temp root, use a root required file manager to move the file to data/local. Then un temp your phone an run gfree
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
I have rooted over 8 different myTouch4g's with no problem and I used the same s=off guide on the development forums.
I am using Visionary to gain temproot. I am able to gain temproot but when I run the terminal sh root.sh command I get this error:
insmod: init_module '/sdcard/root/wpx.ko' failed (Function not implemented)
It continues with the hboot duplication and it tells me to reboot into hboot to see if i I have S=Off...
I have done this about 20 times now and I cannot get S=OFF. I have uninstalled visionary and reinstalled it, I downloaded the root folder with files to make sure they weren't corrupted.
I still cannot get S=OFF... Another thing I notice is that Superuser sticks on my phone even after restarting it.
Any ideas??
switch to gfree instead of root.sh
work off local instead of sdcard
find the 5 minute abd thread
you just basically unzip the attachment in that thread, and put folder /adb on your PC's c: root
then you open a dos box in that directory
put the contents of gfree v0.2 zip (find the "check this out even if you're rooted" sticky) (if will be a folder named gfree_02 or something like that with like 7 files)
in the c:\adb directory so it looks like c:\adb\gfree_02
rename it gfree to make it easier
c:\adb\gfree
goto your dos box and pusg the directory to your connected phone (with usb debugging turned on)
continue to follow the "even if you're rooted" thread
use visionary 11 not 14, ive seen more failures with 14.

Or you could use a root explorer and just place them in data/local/ and continue. Its what I did. No computer involved in rooting mine

well, meister, you in business?
First off, I have a Nexus S 4g from Sprint (d720) rooted using the method as posted in the thread titled "[GUIDE] Nexus S 4G Simple Root/Unroot" by kpkimmel back a few weeks ago when that was the ONLY method available.
I am trying to edit an XML file located in my /root/data/data/ directory but I can't access it from adb shell nor the app "Root Explorer", I can however see and 'cd' to the directory but it shows up empty on both "Root Explorer" and through adb . As it seems, I don't have the proper permissions to be able to view/edit the files/folders in the root folder.
SuperUser permissions have been granted for both adb shell and Root Explorer as well so I know that part is in order. I guess I could just be missing an obvious step in accessing the /root/data folder but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Should I just unroot my device and re-root using a different method? Anybody with adb and permissions issues experiences please help. I'm more than frustrated at this point.
Thanks in advance.
try mounting it as rw
Would you be able to list the steps please?

My /root contains nothing either. What is it exactly you want to edit?
its a empty folder.
