[Q] Rooting and overclocking - Xoom General

When you do the root or over clock flash does it erase everything (my settings, apps etc.)?
Mike

I don't know much about all this but i do know:
Rooting = no
Over clocking is what I don't know about.

Unlocking bootloader will erase everything. You have to do this before you can root. As for rooting and overclocking itself no.

Could always do a backup before flashing using titanium backup, assuming it works on the xoom. Anyone know?

Yes and no. it runs but you can't backup anything. After restoring something it works until you reboot, then it will stop working. When you do a restore it creates a second folder, so I'm assuming after the reboot the link gets broken.

OK, now that my heart has calmed down, I have another question.
I have rooted my Xoom (3g/4g/wifi), and have installed all the usual apps for rooted devices, including "Droid Overclock".
My problem is that I have just the initial understanding of over/under clocking (had my DX overclocked). In the app, it says as follows:
Temp: 89 Slot1: 216MHz
Max Freq: 1000MHz Slot2: 312 MHz
Current Freq: 216 MHz Slot3: 456 MHz
Min Freq: 216 MHz
Governor: Interface
Module Version: N/A
Profile: Disabled
Is there a way that this can become better? I'd like to get it as high as possible without it becoming unstable.

pros and cons for ext4 on stock eb13?

I am stock cept for genocide kernel
On the Epic it is like going from fat32 to NTFS in Windows. I finally made the jump this weekend to EXT4 and am never going back to rfs. Just faster and more responsive.
Is the bluetooth still broken? The how to article on android central says the conversion breaks bluetooth, is that true?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I used it while I was on dk28. I noticed a huge jump in data processing. At least 300% uncrease. But what made me jump back to rfs was the random boot ups along with failing processes. But I'm back on it with eb13. Does anyone know if the random boots are gone? I'm on my 3rd day on ext and game not gotten any random boots.
Been rock solid for me.

The conversion broke bluetooth for me. Had to clear data to fix it. Never had issues on CWM 3.0.0.5, but when I converted using CWM 3.0.0.6, Bluetooth FC .
more efficient means battery savings?
can i convert and restore with CWM?

The conversion will automatically backup your system and data before it converts to ext4, and restore it afterward. As long as you are using a ext4 compatible kernel, you should be good to go.
nice!!! while the rom itself is basically stock the kernel is genocide .3
good to go?
will i see battery savings?
Never had a problem with ext4 and eb13. I am using both with genocide kernal and data from dk28 nandroid of bonsai.

Don't think anyone knows for 100%. The theory is that Ext4 with journaling turned off (like CWM 3 will do) does less writes. Less writes means less power consumption so you should see better battery life. Don't think anyone has done any actual analysis of what the savings is though.
Would the conversion save everything cuz my rom is odexed ima use a deodexed eb13 Odin rom with ext 4

Backup desktop

Is there any way to backup the desktop when doing a major upgrade with overcome ROM? A bit sick and tired of always have to recreate my desktop after a Titanium user apps backup.
Titanium Backup still restore all your Sytemdata inclusive Desktop, whats the problem?
When doing a major upgrade only user apps should be backed up. Not system apps. Well I just wantto backup the user accounts and desktop. Can't find that option in Ti backup.

Another problem I have is that my tab is not running stable on 1.4 ghz. Using latest overcome ROM with setCPU. The tab freezes up some time and I have to rebootit to get it started again. 1.2 ghz works just fine.
Thanks for help. I'm a Droid and tab noob.

With Titanium, you have the option to backup and restore just the data associated with system apps.
For example, there's a batch job that backs up all user apps and system data.
Sometimes, restoring system data doesn't work too well, due to changes in data structures, but generally it works ok.

Dave

Chances are you are overclocking your CPU beyond its capability. Remember that just because someone elses CPU can reach 1.4ghz doesn't mean than yours will.

Installed 2.3.3 but...

Hi all, encouraged by all the positive comments about JPK I decided to go on and install it.
All went well, rooted without trouble then went back to the stock kernel. I restored all the apps and system data with Titanium Backup and suddenly the process com.android.systemui (the top taskbar) crashed. I rebooted the phone but the error stayed.
I tried reflashing but this time I installed the apps from scratch and used Titanium to restore the apps data, after that the system responded very stable until an hour ago when the com.android.systemui error and crash appeared again.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes?
I was on JPY before, I guess I'll try JS8 or go back to JPY
Thanks

never restore system data unless whatever ur running is the same thing you were running when you did the backup.
I absolutely agree with you. That's why I flashed again with no system data restore. But the process crashed once more.
Thanks for your input Runedrune

Yes, everything but the (obviously) external sd card.
The only thing I didn't do was repartition. Do you think that could fix it?

Best thing for contacts is to sync with Google. As soon as you sign in to market after wiping and flashing things all contacts are restored. Clean and simple and always on hand if you lose your phone.

It happened to me exactly the same..its because you used Titanium and restored system data.

I've had the same issues with TB, i used it in the beginning. But now i just keep a list of have-to-have apps and i sync my calendar & contacts with google.
I'm also running on 2.3.3, it runs much faster and smoother than 2.2, some lags but a lot less then stock 2.2.

Ok, I'll give it Google sync a try and backup my data using other means. Does anyone know how long does it take to make a full backup via Google?
And will this include wifi and apn settings?
Thanks again

As far as i know, but i could be wrong, you can only sync calendar & contacts via Google. So settings of your phone won't be backed up.
Success!! Thank you all for your suggestions. Gingerbread works smoothly now. Working through the first battery depleting cycles now, time will tell.
Sadly my car home app from samsung for the vibrant car dock doesn't work anymore. It does trigger car mode but it won't play the music through the dock's line out nor keep the screen on. Anyone else experienced this?
Maybe wait for a Gingerbread supported version of the app?
Thanks once more

Which OC app?

Hi guys, just wondering which app you all were using to control your oc. I have the xoom zone and the tiamat kernel with gpu overclock. I have tried setcpu because that's what I've used on my Epic for a long time but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?
Edit: I did get setcpu to work. (Just started the app and hit autodetect, press ok, screen went black so I hit home and restarted, then app started up but said no root, backed all the way out of app and restarted and it requested root, then it had full access. Still wondering what other are using though
I use setcpu with mine and I'm not having problems

[Q] LP Core OC?

Hello fellow xda members. I was wondering if it's safe to overclock the, fifth companion core? Thanks in advance .
Sent with my Google Nexus 7 through the XDA Developers APP.
I think some kernels already do this. Not so much overclock it, but raise the speed that it will run at on its own before the other core(s) take over.

It is clocked at 500 MHz stock. Could I increase it to 700?
I wouldn't recommend something I've not tried myself. What were you going to use to overclock it?
I'd try it myself, but defo don't raise a 500mhz chip to 700 in one go, I'd start with 550 maybe then even go up 25 at a time after that, and DO NOT SET ON BOOT!!!
Doing this may save the 'big' cores kicking in when only doing light duties, like web browsing etc..
If you install trickster mood it will let you see what each core is doing. Let me know what app, or whatever you were going to use and I'd investigate too..

I have Franco R42, I mostly do Web browsing, but all the cores goes to GHz or lower. 500 MHz is not close to usable.
Sent with my Google Nexus 7 through the XDA Developers APP.
Isn't the LP core only used for (booting and) suspend state operations? (That is, screen off and no wake locks held anywhere)
If that is indeed the case, what would the point of this be? So the tablet emerges from suspend faster...?
" NVIDIA's innovative Variable SMP architecture (PDF 919 KB) enables four performance cores to be used for max burst, when needed, with each core independently and automatically enabled and disabled based on workload. The single battery-saver core (or companion core) handles low-power tasks like active standby, music, and video, and is transparent to the OS and applications." I have read that it should run when browsing etc
Sent with my Google Nexus 7 through the XDA Developers APP.
FYI LP core is disabled in Franco's kernel so even if you are changing the value in TricksterMod or his app: it isn't doing anything.
Really? Oh.. Thanks for the heads up, .

I forgot to mention it but try M-Kernel if you want the LP overclocked. Metallice overclocks it to 666mhz. Link is in my sig.
I tried, I had pretty bad battery life with it.
