Netflix advertizes on the XDA Xoom pages but I can't get it to work even tho they claim it works in Android(?)

No there is no Netflix app for Android. A third party solution like PlayOn will work once they have a tablet version.

You're right that PlayOn will not work until there is flash on the Xoom.
lu plus will be another app we need on the tablet now. I'm sure if we give it a month there will be alot of new apps such as this.
There is definitely a Netflix app in the making... it is just that the terms of their rights agreements with the studios require some specific DRM features. AFIK the Xoom complies with most of these, and its just a matter of Netflix releasing the app for Android. Probably something akin to the iPad app. No need for Silverlight or flash. I had heard sometime in Q2.

Pretty sure you won't see netflix on the xoom. They are only releasing it for certain CPU chips that meet the Dr requirement. Unfortunatly that is not the tegra2. Only way to get netfix is preinstalled from the manufacture.

Playon + Netflix works with Xoom. I tried it with a prerelease of flash 10.2. Playon is a bit buggy (netflix login a bit quirky), bit it did work.
There will be a netflix app. Honeycomb and Tegra 2 will have the DRM to run it.
The only question is when.

WFrom Read/Write/Web on Feb17: I'm a "good news first" kinda guy, so here it goes: The good news is, manufacturers were showing off Netflix on Android devices this past week at the Mobile World Congress and it looks as good as you would expect. What's the bad news, then?
If you already own an Android device, Netflix likely won't work on your device. As a matter of fact, it will only work on new devices and possibly not all of those. We're placing a bet right now that "Netflix included!" is the tagline of the next successful generation of Android phones.

Google needs to put the ****ing source out already. If they want to prevent crappy devices with honeycomb, this is the wrong way to do it.
Sent from my Captivate
What's the right way to do it? Because I can't imagine the flak Google will take once the crappy manufacturers get hold of the source code and devices with 128mb of RAM and 400mhz processor are running Honeycomb at glacier speed.
Suddenly people will be saying, "but I thought it was designed for tablets? Honeycomb sucks!"

I don't get that argument at all... Companies want their device to sell not flop. The galaxy tab ran 2.2 simply because honeycomb didn't exist back then. Honestly tho... Who the hell is going to buy a honeycomb phone... ?

I get your point but I'm not talking about quality manufacturers like Sammy. I'm talking about all the Chinese knock offs like the apad and those pos resistive things like the Disgo and the Next tab that are available in the UK and I'm sure elsewhere.
These things can't even run Froyo properly, what chance do they have of running Honeycomb?

This means that we can play games like Quake 3 and Open arena on our devices!
It's called Zeus Arena, it doesn't show up on the launcher atm but you can find it on the android market!

is it possible to play Quake 2 on this ?
If so, where are the instructions? I've got quake 3 to work on my x10 before but didn't control at all, will give Q3 a go again.
The app description says it will only work on Xperia Play and it only works with ioquake engine compatible games, I don't think there is a version of quake 2 that works on that engine
Zeus Arena on quake 3
Small demo of app used in quake 3 is on youtube, search for Quake 3 played on Xperia Play
Should we change the video mode to 856x480 wide screen? Or does it not make a difference?? Also a good tip! If you change step left and step right to something else beside the touch pad. The controls on the touchpad are so much better
i just bought this app, i havent got around to testing it yet, can i just use the quake 3 .pak file off my legit quake 3 on my pc?
It should work just fine with the pk3 files off your cd

A version of fpse with touchpad support is built but its only compatible with 2.3 and he doesn't want to release 2 versions.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
What about the dev releases an in-app purchase with that FPSE build? If you're in touch with the dev, you can suggest him that. It would be only targeted for XPlay owners, so that other devices don't get the wrong build, and it would allow the dev not to have to release 2 versions of his app.

Yes. But if he adds in the support to fpse, that makes the app only compatible with Android 2.3. He does not want this (obviously) and he doesn't want to have 2 versions released on the market!

in app purchase wouldn't work here, the api version changes, meaning the main activity must be recompiled and would require most of the apk to be replaced, not possible in an in app purchase. FPSE isn't only for xperia play, so as was stated, a second build would be needed, or an alternate licensing scheme. Sadly, there's no easy solution, but its likely we'll see 2 versions on the market.

anyone with experience with webOS? to me it seems like the poor man's android...what app options are there? flash support?
theyd be great with webOS
samsung is still throwing BADA devices out....so imagine webOS
The Os, at least the version that shipped on my pre, is the best mobile is i've used. Nothing else can give you true multitasking. But the lack of hardware support, which led to a lack of app support, made for a very frustrating experience. I missed it for a few months after i got the epic. Now I can't imagine not having the app support.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I would love android to have a more webOS feel to it. While it always lacked the proper hardware and dev support. The os is solid.
From cellblock D
The only reason they are buying web os is the same reason google bought motorola mobile. They are just trying to gain patent ground against apple and all the lawsuits.
I don't think you will see any samsung phones with web os because of this purchase.
WebOS had a nice feel, but was not as stable as android in my exp. The lack of decent apps was a problem also. My pre was a horrible phone and I haven't really missed it or webos since getting my epic.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
webOs is honestly the best mobile OS I've ever used. It's so fun to just flick the apps away and has by far the best multitasking you'll ever see. They just needed better hardware and more apps. Otherwise, the funnest OS I've ever used.
Hell I even read somewhere that HP tried putting webOS on the iPad, and that it ran way faster than it ever did on the touchpad or any other HP/Palm device.
I read that Fire will have a stripped/modified version of android. Would the devs eventually be able to load the full version of android on to fire? Right now I'm paranoid by the possibility of having limited usage due to the modified version of android.
Its got the Amazon interface, but it will be running over 2.3
Plus, amazon has said they will not stand in the way of rooting the device, so its very likely that within a month or so some ROMS will be out for it.
Speculators say that the specs have potential for Android 3.0
512MB of RAM = kinda sucks.
Same as in ipad 2

Completely different OS with a significantly different style of memory management. Apples and oranges.
Yeah but 512MB certainly isn't lacking, especially considering it's a device that's under $200. It would've been hard to put in any more and keep it at that price point. Also ICS is supposed to be pretty memory efficient.
Once its able to be rooted and loaded with custom roms I'm buying three. One for me and one for each of my kids. IM getting an Htc Flyer for the wifey.

A little caution here might be in order. The android devs are a wickedly creative crew BUT...until the AF is rooted (consistently) I would NOT presume it can or even will be!
Note how the Transformers were rootable up to the later B70 models. Then after that....nada so far. It's all about the SDK, bootloader, etc.
Wait and see if the AF can be rooted is all I say.
EDIT: Disregard.

I bet this new Sony Tablet will have OEM Dual Shock 3 support out of the box just like the current Tablet S does. So you still have real controls with a familiar gamepad. I guess the choice is yours if they implement that.
